Unfamiliar to the Persona universe? Worry not, for all will be explained!
Important terms to remember:
- A persona is the manifestation of malignant thoughts hidden within a person that is tamed and controlled. Every persona typically represents one of the arcana in a tarot deck (Death, The Hanged Man, Strength, The Magician, etc.).
- A shadow is the manifestation of malignant thoughts hidden within a person that runs rampant and is not tamed or controlled.
In the case of Mayonaka Arena, shadows and personas cannot exist in the real world, but must be summoned within the Midnight Channel. The Midnight Channel is a place within the television that those who can or will summon a persona can go to by traveling through the screen of a television. The Midnight Channel is truly a reflection of people's hearts, and if corrupted enough by an outside source, becomes a place filled with fog where shadows live.
However, that same fog can also form, mysteriously, upon certain days in the city of Inaba. Because of that, shadows can spawn within the fog and run rampant in the city of Inaba. Those who can summon a persona can also summon a Persona within the same fog shadows form from.
When in the real world, when shadows attack normal people, those people will either die or have their psyche eaten, causing them to be afflicted by the Apathy Syndrome. Those afflicted will not be able to feed, wash, cloth, talk, bathe, move, or take care of themselves. Those who have the Apathy Syndrome are normally called the Lost. In the case of Apathy Syndrome patients, if a final boss shadow is destroyed, some psyches will return to their original owners.
STORY OF PERSONA 3 (ABBREVIATED VERSION): This is a spoiler warning for those who have not played the Persona 3 video games!
Spoiler: click to toggle During a study of shadows, the Kirijo family ended up causing a large explosion, killing many and creating a hidden hour known as the Dark Hour and Tartarus. The Dark Hour starts at midnight, lasting for sixty minutes, where shadows roam the real world while those who do not have a persona transmogrify into coffins. Sometimes people don't transmogrify because they're targeted to be eaten by the shadows or have the ability to summon a persona.
Tartarus is a twisted tower created over the laboratory that housed the failed experiment. In the real world, and several years later, the place where the experiment occurred become Gekkoukan High School, where many of the main characters of the story attend.
Through out the story, the main characters who can summon personas travel through Tartarus to reach the top of the tower. Through out their travels, they've also had to face twelve larger shadows on nights with a full moon.
As time progresses, it turns out those twelve shadows truly carry a piece of "death" within them, an avatar to a greater God named Nyx. Those pieces came together to create Nyx's full avatar and he in turn begins to summon Nyx who is bent on destroying the world. The main character sacrifices himself to place a seal around Nyx, ending the game.
STORY OF PERSONA 4 (ABBREVIATED VERSION): This is a spoiler warning for those who have not played the Persona 4 video game!
Spoiler: click to toggle One year after the events of Persona 3, strange murders have occurred in the city of Inaba. Yu, the main character, shakes hands with a gas attendant and begins to watch a show called the Midnight Channel that shows every night, on a rainy night, at midnight. The show ends up showing who's meant to be murdered next.
Finding out he can travel through the television, Yu and several other characters (while fighting their personal shadows and having those shadows become their personas) explore the Midnight Channel to save those who have, apparently, been thrown into the other side of the television.
They find out that someone has been throwing them inside the television as an attempt to save them, but their personal shadows end up killing them instead. As they finally stop the true murderer and the person trying to "save" those intended to die, they confront a creature called Ameno-Sagiri, who believes by creating the fog that makes others turn into shadows, that he is giving everyone what humanity wants. Humanity wants to end suffering, so he intends on turning them into shadows where they can remain uncaring to the world around them.
The team stops it, and they figure that's the end. But it turns out, the gas attendant the main character shakes hands with truly set everything into motion. The attendant ends up being Izanami who truly created the Midnight Channel and is the reason behind everyone dying. They stop her, and the Midnight Channel turns into a beautiful place to represent what lies in everyone's heart.
STORY OF PERSONA 4 ARENA (ABBREVIATED VERSION): This is a spoiler warning for those who have not played the Persona 4 video game!
Spoiler: click to toggle A shadow fighting robot created by the Kirijo Group, called Labrys, is stolen from under Mitsuru's nose and trapped in the television world. The robot's shadow creates an arena in which all of the Persona 4 cast and a select few from Persona 3 (Aigis, Mitsuru, and Akihiko) compete. The persona users manage to defeat Labrys's shadow at the end of the arena, and everything seemingly returns to normal.
However, a dark presence possesses Labrys. Fuuka, from Persona 3, arrives and cuts off the connection. In surprise, a human with no persona partnered with an unknown being was behind the entire debacle. By having the persona users face their shadows in hopes of converting their personas into very powerful shadows, the presence wanted those shadows for a "Project." Mitsuru makes it clear her, Aigis, and Akihiko are going to continue to figure out what's going on (as the Shadow Operatives) while the Persona 4 group reforms the Investigation Team.
