May 27rd, 12:00 PM Sundays were definitely the best days of his life every week. Why? Because it meant no school, no idiot teachers, and no idiot students that were around to bug the crap out of him. He could sleep in as late as he want, stay in his room and sew, and not worry about the rest of the word for the most part. Some students use Sunday as a day to study extra for school or catchup on their homework. Kanji uses it as a day to just simply lounge around. There was a time when his Sundays were preoccupied with Shadow hunting and murder investigations but that time had passed and now he's free to do what he loved most: nothing. Absolutely nothing! Of course, all things that are good are eventually ruined when his mother started asking for help in the store. Not wanting to work on a day that he has free to himself, he quickly came up with some excuse about needing to go out and left the store. He wasn't the type that helped with costumers, not yet. He would avoid that as much as possible so long as his mother is around. He had a lot of maturing and growing up to do before he'd be caught dead behind a counter. Locked in a private room and sewing? Yes. Costumer service? Hell no. He had made no plans with his friends for today. So he walked around the district for a bit as he contemplated going over to the flood plains. It always had been his favorite spot to go; especially the hill top way out of the way. It was his place. At least in his mind it was his place. He could avoid the rest of the world there so long as no one else was up there. The cool breeze was always a nice charm as well. He set his mind to go to that place and started heading toward that direction. On route he caught sight of a familiar face entering the local pharmacy. His hand immediately went to the pocket of his pants. He had been carrying a doll around for two days now on the off chance that he ran into Rio. He had contemplated just going to her place but she mentioned that she was taking care of her mother so he never wanted to bother her. He could have just dropped the doll off too but he never thought to do that till just now. Didn't matter, the girl was around. Kanji made his way into the pharmacy and peeked around the store. When he found her, he approached her, "Rio-chan! How..." His question died at his lips as he got a good look at her, "Wow, you look like crap." |

"No, I just don't want your damn dumplings." He responded sourly since she wouldn't let it go. When she suggested that the waitress was likely sick, he eyed the waitress from his seat and decided not to worry about it. He really didn't care if she was or not because he had awesome food and he would not let awesome food go to waste. He just didn't want Rio's food. It wasn't awesome food like his awesome food. His awesome food was his and no one else's. Her food would be awesome to her and only to her because it's her's, he couldn't take that away from her; just as she shouldn't want to take it away from him. "What the hell is girl germs?" Was she referring to cooties? If he were afraid of cooties like a four year old, he wouldn't be living with his smothering mother. His mother liked to shower him with affection when she could get away with it. It was embarrassing, he would shout and get angry, but he knew it wasn't going to kill him. "Ain't 'fraid of your 'girl germ' neither. Jus' don't need your cold." When she threatened to touch his food he raised a brow at her, almost daring her to do so. "I'll eat it, but I can't guarantee the safety of whatever hand ya use to touch my food with." |

He was getting foul mouthed again for no reason. Rio just stared at him disapprovingly. His rather sassy talk didn’t scare her. He was full of unnecessary aggression the first time they meet. And he took her joke the wrong way. He wasn’t laughing or smiling but getting more aggressive. He was nearly shouting. Rio looked at him blankly. ”It was a joke Kanji kun,” she told him with her same blunt tone. Rio shrugged. She placed her spoon down and moved the bowl to the right of her. She moved the two steamed dumplings in front of him so he could eat them with no problem. She sat there with her eyes closed and her arms crossed for a long while. ”I’d normally accept challenges, but I have a feeling you might try to bit my fingers. I’m not sure how I feel about my fingers in your mouth,” she explained. Rio shook her head. He was such an unusual boy. ”Gosh, I was just trying to be friendly and share food with you. I wasn’t trying to steal your meal from you.” She stared at him disappointedly. She supposed it was partly her fault for upsetting him with her joke. Though she wasn’t too sure how joke went to threatening to bit her. ”U-unless you’re joking too?” she questioned. She really didn’t know. Kanji was just always so weird. Maybe that aggressive face was his joke face. |

No, he wouldn't bite her fingers. He wouldn't put anyone's fingers in his mouth. He didn't trust anyone's hands and where they had been. Hands were such dirty parts of the human body. They touched everything. So, so dirty. No, he'd like break a person's fingers before he bit their fingers. Actually, if the person wasn't a friend and a complete asshole the odds of him breaking their fingers is fairly high seeing how he tends to deal with all his problems with brute force. "S'not that." He placed a finger on the edge of the bowl she pushed toward him and pushed it back toward her, "I jus' don't like dumplings." He didn't trust dumplings because he could never tell what was filled inside them. It was a mystery. He wouldn't know until he bit into it. He didn't want to end up biting into a dumpling only to find out that there was something extremely grotesque inside of it. He was content with his own food. If he wanted to try someone else's he had no problem asking to have a bite or share of it. "So you eat it. I ain't having no part of it." He went back to his fried rice ball. He pointed at her with his chopsticks as a question suddenly popped into his mind. "If we're going back to your place after this, shouldn't ya get your ma something? Prolly be hungry, you were." |

Her fingers were pretty important to her. Without them she couldn’t hold her racket. But there was no sudden connection of her fingers and his mouth. Instead, he claimed he didn’t like dumplings and it was to be left at that. He pushed to plate back towards her and she shrugged. She had attempted something friendly and failed. Failing with Kanji wasn’t too shocking. She really never understood what he was thinking. He brought up her mother and Rio nodded. It was a good idea to buy her mother something to eat while they were here. Rio moaned for a second as she thought what her mother might like. She waved over the waitress smiled happily at her. ”One yakisoba to go please.” The waitress nodded and went off to place the order. Rio seemed rather content for the moment and went ahead back to her soup. ”Oh yes,” she remembered. The girl sat up and looked over at the boy. ”Out of curiosity, can you cook?” She had a conversation with a delightful male earlier in the week where she told him that males didn’t cook. But Kanji was a bit weirder than most Japanese boys. He might have been better at domestic things like cooking, cleaning, and sewing than someone like her. If that was true, she might need to stop at the store before going home. |

Looks like Rio hadn't thought to get her mother anything. It was good that he mentioned it then. He felt oddly pleased with himself that he actually came up with an idea before anyone else did. Usually he was the one devoid of ideas. He wasn't a thinker, he was a follower; he let others stress and sweat over details. He was around to just beat the crap out of things with whatever weapon he can get his hands on. Usually something odd, solid, and large was his favorite. Rio ordered something for the waitress while Kanji polished off the rest of his meal. He pushed his dishes to the edge of the table to signify that he was finished with it. That's when Rio asked him an odd question. Can he cook? It was out of the blue really. Did she expect that he knows how to cook just because he knows how to sew? If he does one thing that isn't masculine, does that imply he does all things that isn't masculine? He almost felt insulted that she would even ask him such a question, would even think there was a possibility that he knew how. Only almost though, because the fact of the matter is..."Yeah... guess so. I can follow a cook book." That was more then he could say about Chie, Yukiko, and Naoto. Those three... should never be in the kitchen. Too many bad memories have led him to the belief that they will never be able to pull off the miracle of making anything edible aside from that one cake. "Why? Can't you?" She should be able to know how to cook. She takes care of her mom after all. Or claims to do so. Plus... she's a girl so she automatically should know how to cook, right? |

He could cook? Well, she supposed that proved her wrong. Maybe it was boys in the city that didn’t know how to cook. Or maybe Kanji was more ambitious than she presumed her was. He didn’t seem that way. He seemed rather relaxed and a bit hot-headed. But he was also really sincere considering the gift in her pocket. He was too complex to categorize. ”Can I? Well, yes. I’m an efficient cook, but not necessarily a great one,” she explained with a befuddled look. How did this turn into a talk about her? Rio could cook. She was fine at making things for herself so she could eat the next day. And she could even cook well enough so her mother wouldn’t starve. But she wasn’t going to win any cooking contests. Baking seemed a little easier than cooking since she could put stuff in the oven and walk away. Timers could be set so nothing would burn. Cooking on the stove meant things could be burnt if she wasn’t constantly stirring or something. ”I can make edible food that sometimes turns out really well. I’ve, uh, had a lot of practice runs so I don’t burn things or make total disasters. But uh, I’m not good enough to offer to make lunches for friends,” she continued to explain. She didn’t mind sharing food with Yuko during high school, but she wasn’t one to volunteer herself to show her skills. More than likely it would have been more of a disappointment than anything else. Her food was far from award winning. ”So I guess that means you’re the type of guy that makes lunches for girls than the other way around,” Rio said with a laugh. She remembered how girls always made extra to share their lunch with a boy they had interests in but were too shy to say anything. It seemed like a trick, but she supposed it was helpful for the boy if he really had no food. Still, confessions would have been easier. ”…you ever confess your love to some girl?” |

Rio could apparently cook too. Albeit, even if she doubted her skills, they were probably a lot better then Kanji's. Kanji didn't cook often and all he ever did was follow a cookbook. There was no guarantee that a cookbook recipe was good to begin with. It might sound good but it might actually taste like shit for the most part. At least, that's the experience he's had. He never made food for friends because he knew better then to try showing off. Apparently Rio was the same way in that department. Not to mention the few times his friends have made food for them. Whether it be the infamous Mystery Food X from Chie, Yukiko, Rise, and Naoto, or from Yu-Senpai experimenting with boxed lunches. He's had two experiences with Yu-Senpai bringing him a boxed lunch for school. He tried both times, and both times he was more then a little blunt on what he thought about the lunch he prepared. When she pointed out that he was the type that made lunches for girls he decided to pipe up and correct that little belief. He might make dolls for people, but he sure as hell didn't make people lunches. "Hell no. I know better then to try and make people stuff." The next question that came his way made him sink back in his seat as he suddenly felt like being swallowed by the world would be a good idea. "Wh-what the hell kind of question is that?" He looked around quickly, as if he were afraid one of the people who knew him were actually around. When no one he recognized in his close circle of friends was around he continued, "N-no. Not that. I never.. I mean, I never even liked a girl." Wait, that was a lie and it sounded bad, "That's not to say I don't l-like girls or anything. I just never gathered the nerve to, I mean.. wait.. This question is stupid. I mean, have you?" Yeah, that's right Kanji. Shoot the same question back at her. He's so smart. What better way to get off the spotlight then to shoot the question back at her face. |

She supposed she agreed with that outlook. She knew better than to go offering food to others since that would lead them to have high expectations. She wasn’t a chef. She was a decent baker. But she wasn’t someone to make dinner for friends and it be the best meal ever. Yuko knew that. She complimented her when the dish was good and encouraged her when it was just edible. But they were good friends and good friends were supposed to honest yet encouraging. But as far as love confessions went, he wasn’t so straight forward. Either he wasn’t a big fan of the questioning or it caught him so off-guard Kanji started to stutter. At first it started off like he was upset that she had to say girl since he didn’t even like girls. Of course, he had to mean like like girls since he liked her well enough to be friends. But he was quick to correct the previous statement in a rather confusing manner. ”You don’t have the nerve?” she questioned. She just sat there staring blankly before shrugging. She supposed that was the normal teenage reaction. She didn’t understand, but being afraid of admitting things seemed to happen too often. She supposed maybe that meant Kanji wasn’t weird but it was just her. ”No. I have no one to confess to,” she told him openly. Rio shook her head a bit disgusted. ”In high school, girls fell in love way too often with guys they didn’t know. I could never understand that. Someone looking or acting cool just never interested me.” She groaned to herself before eating her soup. Girls at her school did such weird things. They had such weird hang-ups too. If there was ever a guy she was interested in, she supposed it’d just be easy to walk up to him and admit those feelings. But since she was never interested in anyone, she didn’t know how hard or easy it was. She could just guess. But her gut was telling her all those things those girls did were so stupid. ”So you’re nervous around a certain girl?” she questioned as she looked at him with one eye. She continued to eat her soup slowly. ”I can only assume you’re nervous out of fear of rejection. But isn’t it better to know rather than spend time wandering in fear? That’s always been my thing of why these things make no sense.” |

The nerve? Hell no he didn't have the nerve! What's the best thing that could happen for him doing anything? A quiet dismissal of his feelings. He sure as hell didn't expect anything to ever come from him admitting anything. The worst thing that could happen? Well... he assumed it would be getting shot. He didn't want to get shot either. He had enough problems to deal with without a blown kneecap. So if there is anything he didn't have a nerve for, it would be voicing his feelings, of any kind, to anyone. Of course Rio never confessed to anyone either. By the sounds of it, she never even found an interest in anyone. That just meant she doesn't know what the hell she's talking about on the subject. If she never had to go through such a thing then she obviously wasn't the best person to seek advice from. She was clearly just ignorant to the matter and just thinking of how things would go based on nothing! When she went back to the topic of him and if he were just nervous around a certain girl as opposed to all, he hid his face in his hands and groaned. She seemed to understand that he was afraid of rejection but she didn't and probably never would understand just how afraid he was of rejection. It was borderline phobia of his if he had any. "I'mma stay wanderin' in fear. Better then being shot down." Of course, that last part could be taken in a literal sense. Not that-- shit! "Wait! I mean, if I ever did like someone I'd just stay quiet 'bout it. And-- aw fuck it. Y'know. S'not like takin' advice from you on this department would be the wisest, you got no experience in the field from what you said. You just guessin' how things woulda worked for you." |

He wanted to stay in fear of being shot down. She supposed that was his right. It was the stupidest thing in her opinion, but it was his life and all she could ever do was offer help. There was no rule stating he had to accept it. Was rejection that bad? She didn't find it the most important thing to fear. It was just another option, like losing. It was best to always win, but inevitably there would always a lose somewhere. But she was no expert. She had absolutely no experience. Her solution was her predication at how she would approach the situation. Rio shrugged as he pointed all these things out. "Have you sought out advice from someone who does have experience and taken it?" she asked plainly. Rio shook her head. She believed he just had feelings for someone or several girls that he was ignoring because they made him scared. It seemed silly to her, but hiding those feelings and watching from afar seemed to be the norm. "You know what, let's talk about something else. Romantic relationships isn't my strong point and it never will be." It was best to stay away from that than trying to persuade him any further. Her words weren't going to inspire him so she was just wasting her breath. And he seemed happy to live in denial. There was no reason to take that from him. "Anyways I..." The waitress appeared with the food to go as well as the bill for everything. Rio pulled out the money to pay for everything and thanked her for a great meal. She looked at the bag and nodded. Hopefully her mother was hungry. "Are you finished?" she asked. She had only ate about half of her food, but she felt finished. Being sick always put a hindrance on her appetite. It was part of the reason why getting a proper workout done was nearly impossible. "We can get any time you're ready." |
