May 27rd, 12:00 PM Sundays were definitely the best days of his life every week. Why? Because it meant no school, no idiot teachers, and no idiot students that were around to bug the crap out of him. He could sleep in as late as he want, stay in his room and sew, and not worry about the rest of the word for the most part. Some students use Sunday as a day to study extra for school or catchup on their homework. Kanji uses it as a day to just simply lounge around. There was a time when his Sundays were preoccupied with Shadow hunting and murder investigations but that time had passed and now he's free to do what he loved most: nothing. Absolutely nothing! Of course, all things that are good are eventually ruined when his mother started asking for help in the store. Not wanting to work on a day that he has free to himself, he quickly came up with some excuse about needing to go out and left the store. He wasn't the type that helped with costumers, not yet. He would avoid that as much as possible so long as his mother is around. He had a lot of maturing and growing up to do before he'd be caught dead behind a counter. Locked in a private room and sewing? Yes. Costumer service? Hell no. He had made no plans with his friends for today. So he walked around the district for a bit as he contemplated going over to the flood plains. It always had been his favorite spot to go; especially the hill top way out of the way. It was his place. At least in his mind it was his place. He could avoid the rest of the world there so long as no one else was up there. The cool breeze was always a nice charm as well. He set his mind to go to that place and started heading toward that direction. On route he caught sight of a familiar face entering the local pharmacy. His hand immediately went to the pocket of his pants. He had been carrying a doll around for two days now on the off chance that he ran into Rio. He had contemplated just going to her place but she mentioned that she was taking care of her mother so he never wanted to bother her. He could have just dropped the doll off too but he never thought to do that till just now. Didn't matter, the girl was around. Kanji made his way into the pharmacy and peeked around the store. When he found her, he approached her, "Rio-chan! How..." His question died at his lips as he got a good look at her, "Wow, you look like crap." |

”Uh… yeah. I knew that. S’cool.” He actually didn’t know that fact and it sounded like complete bullshit to his ears. Why would only one percent of the planet’s water be drinkable? There’s a lot of water around so in his mind, the math didn’t come out right. Couldn’t they just filter the water in the ocean or something? That way it wasn’t so salty tasting? Ha! Maybe the world didn’t think to try that yet. Maybe he was actually smarter then a lot of people on this planet. Oh yeah, one point for Kanji. He merely inclined his head to the side slightly when she mentioned the fastest severed ball. He didn’t know what the Davis Cup was so he couldn’t really know what she was talking about. He knew she was talking about a sport of sorts but don’t all sports involve balls and the handling of them? For all he knew, it could be a bowling ball. Actually that sounded about right. The Davis Cup sounded like a bowling competition. Throwing a cannon ball sized ball down a lane was serving the ball, right? In order to knock down the white pin things at the end of the lane you had to serve the ball. Kanji never played bowling before so he couldn’t be too sure on the exact terminology or mechanics of the sport. He just knew that bowling seemed like an incredibly boring sport. Then she asked him why he liked sewing and Kanji didn’t really have an answer for her. In all honesty, for the longest time he didn’t like sewing. No… that’s wrong. He didn’t like that he liked sewing. It made him uncomfortable to like something so feminine when he’s supposed to be masculine. He knew the way students worked at school; if they ever found out, they would just trash talk him for the longest time until he beat the crap out of them, or moved away. Sewing is the one thing he’s actually good at; aside from taking a hit or beating a shadow to death. He supposed liked sewing because he was good at it? No… he didn’t like liking sewing before and he was good at it then too. It was only recently that he accepted the fact that sewing was part of him and that he was sort of alright with the idea of him liking sewing. He knew what changed his mind too. He liked hearing ‘thank you’ for the dolls that he makes. He hadn’t been given a thanks before for anything. And to actually get a thanks for doing something he enjoyed but felt insecure about was a weird feeling. That and it was great to know that he was able to make some little brat’s day. ”Uh… have to be because it makes kids happy.” He answered awkwardly. ”Ain’t never been given a thanks or shown ‘preciation for makin’ this kind of stuff until I started makin’m for the brats ‘round town.” |

He answered her question with the most unexpected answer in the world. He sewed things because it made children happy. She was pretty sure she missed the connection of him sewing and children happy. It was like some steps were missing. It was like saying balls made her happy. It was so indirect and inaccurate that it could be misinterpreted in so many different ways. The truth was, it made her happy when she scored points with tennis balls. She was pretty sure some action that required sewing lead to some type of item for children. She pulled out the small doll from her pocket and looked at it with a smile. So these things were made for children? That was nice. She could see how someone really young could be extremely grateful for such a gift. Then again, she was an adult and still extremely grateful and appreciative of it. "So now you make them for adult women and they say thank you, but it's not at heartwarming as a small child..." she mused. She had no clue if it were true or not, but it sounded pretty touching it if was. Rio smiled at Kanji. "So you have a cute and innocent side to you." She opened the gate to her house and allowed him to come in before closing it. She dug in her jacket for the keys then opened the door. She called out she was home the moment she walked in and took of her shoes and waited for him to do the same. Rio walked down the hall to her mother's room. She was sitting in bed watching television, not really paying attention her daughter or the show on the screen. "Hey Mom. I don't know if you ate or not, but I brought you some food from town." Her mother didn't really react as she placed the food besides her futon. She kissed her on the forehead and walked out the door and shut it behind her. She looked at Kanji with a smile. "Well then, my room's this way." She lead him up the stairs to her room. It was a fairly plain room with a few rackets hung on the wall as well as her tennis uniform. But the largest structure in the room was the bed. "You can have a seat," she explained as she took of her jacket and immediately hung it up. |

Adult women? As far as he knew, he hadn’t really made anything for adult women, unless Rio was counting herself. He lifted a brow at her and gave her a look over once more. Exactly how much older was Rio? He gathered she wasn’t in high school anymore considering he never seen her on school grounds. Well, except that one time. But her comment made him think that she’s implying that she’s an old crane now. “Uh… s’pose.” He responded lamely. He was half tempted to ask her how old she was exactly but even he wasn’t that stupid. He knew that it was rude to ask a lady how old she was. It was one of those unwritten rules that everyone understood in the male population. Even someone as clueless as he. Of course, she had to add the whole ‘cute and innocent’ bit to the last bit of her observation. ”Y’oulda be the only one to think sumthin’ like that”. Innocent was definitely not a word people ever used to around Inaba when it came to describing Kanji. With all the trouble he had gotten in the past, he pretty much scrapped the whole ‘cute and innocent’ appeal. He followed her into her house and kicked his shoes off at the front door. He didn’t want to track any dirt or mud along the place, and it was just common courtesy to do so. He trailed a few steps behind Rio as she made her way down the hallway. He remained outside and out of sight when she entered her mother’s room as he awkwardly waited. When Rio came back out and directed him toward her room, he started getting nervous again. This would be the first time he had ever been in a girl’s room. It was uncanny just to think about the prospect of going into a girl’s room. He heard enough crap floating around school about what to expect when you’re invited to a girl’s room but he kept reminding himself that it was totally not like that in this case. It didn’t help him feel any less uncomfortable regarding the situation though. When they got to her room, he stayed at her door and just peered in awkwardly. For all the buildup and concern he was having, her room was pretty ordinary. Hell, his room had more character to it then hers seemed to have. It was a sad room in his mind. Lacked a voice. There were a few rackets hung on the wall but that seemed to be the only bit of personality the room had to offer. He took a few steps in and continued to peer around the room as if searching for something out of the ordinary that he might have missed. Tried as he might, he couldn’t find anything that held much interest and he suddenly didn’t understand what the big deal about getting into a girl’s room was. Uh… kay.” He responded when she offered him to take a seat. He just plopped right on the floor where he stood and sat cross-legged. ”You completely moved in…?” He wondered as he continued to glance around. Maybe she hadn’t had the time to unpack everything she owned and that’s why her room looked so plain. ”Or do y’like havin’ a lotta nothin’?” |

She turned and looked at him. What kind of question was that? Rio stared at the blonde male for a moment as she shrugged. "I suppose so... All my clothes and books are unpacked. There's more equipment downstairs but that stuff won't fit in my room." She didn't see the point in keeping equipment needed for outside to be stored in her room. The things that were most important were her bed, her clothes, and her books to be in her room. Nothing else seemed necessary. Then he asked if she had a lot of nothing. She sat down next to him and stared at him. "Lots of nothing?" She didn't even understand what he meant by that. Even so, it sounded rather rude. The woman folded her arms and stared him down. "I suppose your room is full of things?" She suppose it had tons of books about sewing and probably sewing machines. It might have even had those dolls used to mimic bodies. What were they called? Mannequins? And there was probably fabric all over the walls. Lots of fabric. But she didn't need so many things. Technically, all she needed was her racket and balls. "You don't like my room? Were you expecting something more pink?" |

Hmm… It just seemed odd to Kanji that there would be so little stuff in her room. It was too… neat. That’s what the problem was. His room had a whole lot of stuff in his room because he did a lot of sewing where he had the most privacy. “Yeah… I got lotta stuff in my room.” He admitted casually. He felt the urge to scoot over just a little bit when she sat next to him. It was a bit too close for his comfort; especially since the two of them were in her room and her mom was right downstairs. She could very easily walk in or hear them or something. He wasn’t really sure what color walls he assumed she had. Pink didn’t really fit her since he couldn’t recall ever seeing anything on her that was even pink to begin with. She never wore pink the times that he’s seen her so it wasn’t like it was her favorite color, or rather, a color he would assume is her favorite. ”Uh… guess I woulda thought sumthin more….” He dragged the last word out as he glanced around the room a bit before settling on her gaze once more, ”Violet.” It wasn’t like she had anything that would hint at purple being her color. He just had a feeling that if he had to guess a color she would use, it would be in the purple family. Not the girly light purple either, it would be the deep dark violet color since she was not the ‘girly-girl’ type. Then again, she was also an adult… technically. ”I dunno though. Never been in a girl’s room before. Hell, never been invited to one’s house either…” He supposed that could be considered a lie. He did go to the Amagi Inn, but that’s an inn. It’s not a house. It doesn’t count, does it? He didn’t think it did. Maybe he should ask one of his friends if it’s the same thing. Would it be a strange question to ask out of the blue though? Maybe he’ll just leave it alone. |

He expected her room to be violet? She blinked a few times as she looked at him. Why violet? She had nothing against the color, but that was a pretty random answer. “Violet…huh…” she repeated looking around at the white walls. Somehow being trapped in a purple room didn’t seem all that appealing. “So you like purple…” she assumed then shrugged. She supposed if she brought him materials than it would be a purple color then since he liked it so much he thought her room should be that odd color. Or Kanji could have just been weird and insane because it wasn’t like he had ever been in a female’s room let alone house. Perhaps he really did think girls had some girly colored room with frilly things and teddy bears and things like that everywhere. “A little disappointing?” she asked curiously. She supposed this should have been more special for him. If that was the case, she could have gotten snacks and they could have sat around and… Well, when Kenji used to come over, they really just ate in her room as she looked at magazines and he talked about older women he thought were beautiful. “Hey Kanji? Are you into older women? If you are, then I know how to make you a bit more comfortable,” she said plainly. He wouldn’t be that hungry, but her mother did have bridal maganizes downstairs. Kenji always like looking at the older women models in those things. |

”Violet like… the color of an eggplant.” He confirmed, ”Prolly’ a dark grey stripe goin’ ‘round the room too.” Actually, now that he thought about it, that didn’t sound so bad. Maybe he should do that with his room sometime. Then again, he wouldn’t know how to paint a straight line for his life. It would require too much patience and he’d likely get paint all over his floor. Not to mention the fact that he would have to empty his room of his stuff so the stuff wouldn’t get ruined. Yeah… too much work in this case. ”Not my favorite but it’s a’right.” He shrugged when she assumed it was his favorite color. When she asked if his first time experience in a girl’s room was a little disappointing, Kanji shrugged, ”Got nothin’ to base it off of. So… I dunno.” Is he disappointed? Should he be disappointed? It’s not like he really had a similar experience to compare it to. He supposed he could compare it to his experience at the Amagi Inn, which had been absolutely HORRENDOUS. Not only did he fail to get any sleep that night, but he got pails thrown at his head. It really hurt. Then Rio’s next question, which was seemingly out of the blue, completely took him by surprise, ”W-hat?” He sputtered, ”What?” He repeated before flailing his hands out in front of him, ”Why y’askin’ sumthin stupid like that? I mean… Hell, I dunno. I mean... does it matter? I mean…” He didn’t even know how to answer such a question, ”Does age even matter to people? We’re like… attracted to who we uh… are attracted to… right?” Sort of like his thing with Naoto back then. He didn’t care if she was a boy or a girl or whatever, he still had a raging crush on her for some odd reason. ”I mean… do y’like younger guys?” Why the HELL did he just ask something as idiotic as that? |

He seemed surprised. She wasn't too sure why, but she supposed it was a personal question. They were still in the beginning stages of friendship. Yuko wasn't comfortable enough to start talking about all the boys she liked until much later. Rio waved her hand in a poor attempt to settling him down as he flailed about like a madman. It was pretty funny how that seemed to send him into a frenzy. She was sure that Kenji would have said yes to even a stranger. Different boys acted differently she assumed. He eventually settled down and answered. Well, it wasn't so much of an answer but a series of questionable responses that seemed like an answer. "You know, I never thought to ask something like that," she replied as she moaned looking up. She rubbed her bottom lip with her index finger. Why did Kenji like older women? Did age really matter? It shouldn't have matter. Maybe it was him thinking he was more mature than he really was. Or maybe older women were more attractive to him. It wasn't like she would ever figure something like that out now. They didn't even talk anymore. He asked if she liked younger guys and she nodded. "Depends on the individual." Young guys were nice. Even guys her own age were nice. She liked nice people. They made rather good friends. She especially liked people who were nice with patience. It helped make friendship with them easier since sometimes she was a bit of a difficult person. "You're younger and I like you. But it doesn't mean I'd automatically like someone your age," she told him before giving him a friendly smile. He was a bit rough around the edges and hard to deal with at times, but he was a good kid at heart. |

’You’re younger and I like you.’ His mind sort of did this thing where it had this spark or zap and then blanked out to be a complete empty void. In the instance he honed in on that statement and only that statement which meant forgetting the rest of the conversation and missing the last bit of it. Yeah, he usually took things a bit too much to heart. It was sort of similar to that one time when Dude Naoto (since at the time he thought Naoto was a dude) had stated ’I’m interested in you’ and it threw his entire life into a spiral of self-consciousness, uncertainty, and a whole world of confusion about what his sexuality was. In other words, he tended to take things a bit too seriously, even if things were not exactly supposed to mean what he thinks they mean. So one couldn’t blame him if he sat there on the floor and stared at Rio for what seemed like the longest twenty seconds of his life while he gaped at her like some idiotic fish. His mind was so over-zapped at that statement that the blood was confused as to where it should be rushing toward; his face wasn’t beat red like it should be because his entire body just shut down. Finally, after staring at her stupidly for another ten seconds, his eyes fluttered shut a couple of times as he seemed to come back into the world of reality. ”Oh um…hnn…” What does one say in response to that anyway? Hell, was strange for him since most of their interactions consisted of him yelling at her, and her trying to rip his ear off. How the hell did they get onto this topic anyway? ”D-do y’like guys often?” Wait! No that was not what he wanted to say. He didn’t even want to know that. ”Wait.. I mean… uh… y’bring dudes up here often?” He felt like wincing at that question because it sounded worse then the first. ”Uh… what do y’do when y’have’em up here?” Brain.Not.Cooperating.
