May 24th
3:30 p.m.

A cool rain continued to fall in the Tatsuhime Shrine, the droplets tapping lightly the ground all around, creating a gentle chorus that echoed in the sacred ground. Besides the rain, the shrine was relatively quiet and empty. Yet. . .

A pair of figures sat beneath a tree in the corner of the shrine. One of them, was Ren, a girl with silvery hair, green eyes, the right eye being covered by a lock of hair, wearing a white hoodie with a black hood which was clearly a size too large for one as thin as herself, also wearing a pair of black baggy shorts and a pair of worn shoes with a black&white color scheme.

The other figure, which was curled up beside her, was her faithful canine compainion, a gray furred, green eyed dog named Kiba.

Ren sat with her back against the tree, her hood covering her head against the rain. She rested an arm upon a bent knee, while her other arm sat upon the wet grass beside her.

She had previously dozed off while listening to the rain falling around her, while Kiba remained awake to look out for any sort of trouble. Ren eyes eventually fluttered back open, and looked up at the rainy skies.

She felt. . .lonely. But it was strange. It was always only herself and Kiba, and yet she never felt this way before. She wondered why.

Ren sat there, pondering this, zoning out as she did so.

The Flood Plains. Suki nodded. It was called the Flood Plains because...it didn't flood there whenever it rained, right? It would be disastrous if it did. Mummy kitty and her kittens would drown for sure. It was a great open place as well..and if it was this windy over there, who knew how many miles mummy kitty would be blown!

"I..I wanna come too," Suki whined childishly although he saw no way to tag along. Thinking about it some more, he realized there was simply no way to get to the Flood Plains save in a bus. As there were no buses running on this harrowing day, he relented and gave in. He would have to find somewhere dry and safe for the cats. They were probably drenched.

"Well..mummy kitty's black, and her tail's long, and her ears are red at the tips," Suki frowned. "Someone painted her ears..there's still a little left at the top..the rest've fallen off. I think she'll be wet too. Oh, oh, there's a biiiig bush in the north-western area. If you follow the stone path, you'll walk by it! Mummy kitty usually sleeps in there. It's very easy to see since it's the biggest bush over there.."

"Be careful," Suki advised, recalling those evil things that attacked him the first night here.

Ren nodded in affirmation as Suki described the mother cat and where to find her. "Alright. We'll be right back, Suki. Kiba!"

Upon his masters call, Kiba leapt to his feet, barking in response. Ren then turned away from Suki and ran out the shrines exit, into the storm, Kiba tailing right behind her. The route to the flood plain was quite wet, and water barraged down upon her rather heavily, lightning flashing jagged fangs from above.

Once in the Flood Plain, Ren began to search for the bush that Suki had described, which became difficult, as a thick mist began to build up around the plain. A moment later, as Ren squinted through the mist, she located the bush, which was being buffeted by the rain and wind. "Over there!" Ren cried over the sound of thunder, proceeding to approach the bush.

Almost at once, Kiba began to growl, causing Ren to halt in her tracks. Looking past the bush, Ren made out another figure. It looked like a dog, slightly bigger than Kiba...but there was something off about it. A mask-like object clung to the side of its face, a sort of black ooze coating the rest of the animal. It's eyes were that of a feral beast driven to insanity. It snarled ominously at the bush.

Following its gaze, Ren could make out the red tip of a pair of ears. Is that...?

Ren had little time to complete this thought, as the feral dog lumbered towards the bush. I've come so far...I won't...let Suki down! "KIBA!!

Her wolfish companion didn't need to hear another word. With a snarl of his own, he lunged forward at the feral hound, bashing into it in order force it away from the bush. In response, the feral dog reared its head at Kiba, snarling menacingly. Kiba however, did not waver, and howled as it leapt toward the beast, claws and teeth lashing forth.

Meanwhile, Ren ran up to the bush, and found that the mother cat was curled up underneath it, shielding its kittens from the beast that almost attacked them. It looked up at Ren and initially spat a threatening hiss. As Ren calmly reached out with her right hand, the mother lashed out with a paw of sharp claws. However, Ren purposely allowed the claws to strike, the cuts they made drawing out blood. She halted hand, allowing the mother to see she meant no harm. It sat there, uttering a cat like growl for a few moments.

While she continued coaxing out the mother and her kittens, Kiba continued to fight with the feral hound, exchanging blow after blow with it tooth and nail. Eventually, as the feral dog lunged forward with its bloody jaws, Kiba scurried to the side, effectively sidestepping the attack, and grabbed the feral hounds throat with his own crushing jaws, heaving it down to the ground as he bit down.

At last, the mother submitted to Ren, and allowed her kittens to be placed in the pockets of her hoodie, the mother cat sitting the girls head underneath the hood of her hoodie with her red tipped ears poking out. If one didn't know better, one would possibly believe those ears stuck out of Ren's head.

Ren noticed as she stood, that the scuffling of the brawl nearby had come to a silence. Turning towards the direction of where it took place, she realized the mist was slowly fading away, with Kiba limping out from the middle of it, his front left paw bloodied.

"Kiba...?" Ren inquired the dog. The wolfish dog gave her a sort of nod, his previously blood chilling glare docile once again. The fight was over, for better or worse.

---------------------------------------------------

Ren and Kiba finally made their way back to the shrine, a pair of cat ears sticking out of Ren's hood, and a few more from her pockets, and Kiba limping beside her, ignoring his wound with great effort. "Suki? We have them." Ren called, keeping a worried gaze down at Kiba.

Suki waved as Ren and Kina disappeared into the torrential downpour. It left a terrible taste in his mouth..wait, that was just the raindrops. Suki struggled quite a bit with against the wind, but he finally got to the tiny store behind the shrine where all the stuff like joss sticks and papers and beads were kept. The cats could stay there for a while. A terrible feeling filled his stomach, and he glanced around. The rain was slightly thinning for some reason. The wind wasn't as strong anymore either.

He managed to stepped outside the shrine and gasped. Immediately the area became foggy and misty, and he was reminded of the night when he was attacked. With a gasp, he jumped backwards, back into the shrine. His vision cleared at once - curiously, the fog didn't seem to be able to pierce through the shrine. It was as though some huge invisible barrier prevented it from doing so. As though something was protecting this holy place. He went out and was overcome by a sensation of dread and incoming danger. A guttural roar and a sloshy sound of something rushing very quickly towards him made him turn back and shoot back into the shrine. When he turned around, he caught sight of something on all fours dashing past the entrance of the shrine.

This was rather scary. Like a horror movie.

Although he could see the fog outside the shrine, nothing happened anymore. Soon, Ren and Kiba arrived, the former seemingly having turned into a cat and the latter bleeding.

"Ah!"

Forgetting about the creature that tried to attack him earlier on, he rushed out of the shrine. He bent and took Kiba's paw, frowning. Did he get into a brawl with mummy kitty? Gee, she was fierce. Something serene overcame him and he somehow felt that he could help somehow. But how?

He brought them to the storage, looking at Ren's hood curiously. Suddenly, mummy kitty burst out and settled on the floor comfortably, blinking up at Suki and then staring pointedly at Ren's pockets.

Soon after she called, Suki ran up to Ren and Kiba. The wolfish dog winced a bit as the shrine boy took his paw in his hand, frowning with apparent concern. After this Suki led them to the shrine's storage, looking up at Ren's hood curiously. After a beat, Ren realized why, as she didn't quite notice earlier how the mother cats ears were protruding out from her hood.

"Suki found a safe place for you. You can come out now." She said to the pair of ears. At that moment, the cat leapt from its seat between the top of Ren's head and the cover of the hood, settling onto the storage room's floor, looking up to stare at the pockets of the silver haired girls hoodie.

"It's alright, I didn't drop any" Ren said to the mother.

Kneeling down onto the floor, Ren reached into the pockets and carefully fished out the kittens, setting them all down beside their mother. Once they were all set down, Ren pulled down her drenched hood before turning towards Kiba, her face still tight with worry. Kiba on the other hand, averted her gaze, feigning indifference toward the wound, as if it hadn't troubled him at all.

Frowning at how wet everyone was, Suki looked around and found nothing that could help them. He took in his stuff - his clothes and everything packed in a small bag - but he only had one towel and that wouldn't be enough for him, Ren, Kiba and the cats! The kittens yawned and went to sleep right there on the floor while mummy kitty curled around them, still watching Suki and Ren.

He took out a small first aid kit from his bag, wondering if it worked on animals. Mummy told him to use it whenever he was hurt, or if other people were hurt. It probably worked on other people too! He took out a small pack of tampons. Mummy said these were for nosebleeds, but it worked nicely when you wanted to wrap up a wound. He heard they were used to save lives in a war! And these things looked so small, too. Unrolling it, he pulled out a small bottle of water and cleaned Kiba's wound, pressing the tampon to it after that to halt the bleeding. Finally he spread some cream on it and wrapped it up, taping it with medical tape to finish.

"All done! I don't know if it works on animals," Suki shrugged. "But mummy said this is good for people!"

Turning her worried gaze from Kiba, Ren looked over and watched Suki pull out a box with the universal first aid cross, and took out...Ren didn't know what, it looked like some sort of cloth that Suki rolled out and used with water to clean Kiba's wound.

Kiba didn't fuss at Suki while he cleaned the wound, but grimaced in sharp pain as he touched it and looked the other way, partly in embarrassment. He didn't like to display his own pain in front of Ren, who of course would always worry over him. When Suki was finally finished bandaging the wound, Kiba looked back toward him with a hesitant dog-like expression of gratitude.

Ren sighed with relief. "Thank you Suki...if anything happened to Kiba, I don't know what I would do...he's always been there for me...and I can't ever do anything to help him when he gets hurt trying to protect me..."

Kiba walked over to Ren, laying his head upon Ren's lap, trying to assure that she was wrong. She stroked his ears gently as she spoke again, struggling to find the right words, as she was not one who could easily carry a conversation. "...I just wish...I could stop running away and be strong enough to protect Kiba instead...maybe...even protect other people who...accept me..."
