Naoto had been walking through the busy hallways of Yasogami High. She rushed through the highly populated building, trying to get her shoes so she could leave and meet her Grandfather back at home. The female detective could see that some of the students were about to reach out and talk to her, but she made sure to evade them as if they were made of fire. The girl had no time for childish activities done by people she didn't know. Why had they been so interested in her? Sure, she had dressed as a male and been a detective, exceptional for her age, but that didn't mean she wanted a bunch of fame. Why couldn't they just leave her alone?

"I can't be late for the rendezvous. That would make the Shirogane reputation deteriorate,' Thought Naoto as she quickly grabbed her shoes and put them on, rushing out of the doorway. It was then that it began to rang, her cellphone. Not wasting time, the girl quickly flipped it open.

"Hello?" She asked.

"Naoto-chan is that you?" Asked a familar voice, her grandfather.

"Oh Grandfather! I apologize, I lost time from copying down my no-"

"Don't worry. It turns out that the woman figured out her own family problems. You can do anything you want now Naoto-chan," He said in a soft voice.

"Oh uh...thank you Grandpa," Said Naoto before they said goodbye and hung up. The girl was now holding her suitcase, standing around a little. What should she do for her free day off?

School had been such a drag today. It didn’t help matters that he was still sore from getting into a street fight late last night with some jerkoff who liked to think he was better then everyone. At least, that had been the impression Kanji got from him. He was suffering from a few bruises that were easily hidden with clothing, but the fresh road rash on his face was not so easily concealable. He had gotten called into the office and later forced to the nurse’s office to be examined. Apparently someone thought something had happened on school grounds but he managed to weasel his way out with almost no arguments. It’s not like they could prove he had gotten into a fight at the school. At least this time he really hadn’t.

The day had dragged and he was more then happy (well actually he was still in a foul mood) when the final bell rang. He slipped his sunglasses on as he stepped outside and raised one hand up to his face and rubbed at it with one hand. He scowled when it still stung to the touch. He’d have to put some ointment or something on it when he got home and hopefully avoid his ma at the same time. If she did spot it, maybe he’d just be able to convince her that he had simply tripped and fell. Too bad he was such a horrible liar.

He was so preoccupied with his thoughts that he hadn’t noticed Naoto on the phone up ahead until he came upon her. By the time he came upon her, the phone call ended and Naoto appeared to just be standing around, and dare he say it, looking a bit lost for the most part. He stopped alongside her and arched a lone eyebrow at the pint-sized detective. ”Uh… s-sup, Naoto?” His feet shifted a bit as he quickly grew awkward, like always, when concerned with Naoto, ”Sumthin happen?”

Naoto Shirogane had been standing around until a familar face had stood by her side. It was none other than Kanji Tatsumi. He seemed to feel a little awkward about the situation, and Naoto felt a bit weird as well. The boy had been a bit of a strange one, but she did not mean that in a bad way. He didn't think any different about her even though she was a girl. Kanji didn't rank Naoto on a lower scale even if he did seem to be a bit protective at times during they're investigations. Although she didn't know it herself, she enjoyed it a little.

"Oh Kanji-kun. I was going to go to my grampa for a case, but the client else already embarked an assay on the situation and found what she lost," Naoto said as she took an examination of the road rash on Kanji's face. Feeling a bit concerned, she reached up and gave a light touch to it, which may or may not have made the sewer flinch a bit.

"That doesn't look to good," Naoto said as she lifted up her cap a bit.

"Was it another fight?" She asked, already knowing the answer for the most part. "You need have more control over yourself, Kanji-kun. What if the next time you commence a conflict you're overpowered by a group of thugs with knives?" She said with a little hint of anger in her voice. While it may have seemed that she was just trying to piss of the boy, she was in her own way, concerned about him. While these fights may not happen every night, there was always a chance of the boy getting killed despite having a persona. Naoto's eyes gazed in another direction for a few seconds before returning to Kanji's.

"I'm sorry for the outburst...just try to be careful alright?" She asked before releasing a sigh.

"Did you want me to go help get you some ointment or are you okay for now?"

Typical Naoto working on a case; although he couldn’t remember a time that Naoto actually got a case to finish itself before she had to do something with it. He supposed that was good luck sort of. Or maybe it was bad luck since it meant she didn’t have a case to focus on. Kanji got the impression she enjoyed working on a case more then doing anything a typical teenager would do. ”Oh uh…” He would have commented on the case a bit more if it weren’t for Naoto suddenly reaching out and touching his face.

He flinched back, not because it stung, but more because Naoto actually touched him willingly. His mind quickly worked out trying to recall a single other memory of them knowing one another where Naoto had actually touched him for one reason or the other. There were plenty of instances where he touched her, whether it was to carry her after the attack from her shadow or helping her up for some reason. He had always waited for the moments where he could loan a hand even if it was because it meant he could touch her.

But there wasn’t a single instance where she had actually initiated a touch. It was odd, awkward feeling, and seemingly out of the ordinary for her. Unless you counted him getting wailed by a pale back in the Amagi Inn that one time but he couldn’t recall whether or not she had hit him in the head or if it was one of the other girls that had successfully given him a splitting headache.

Fact of the matter was, she hardly ever displayed for concern. Well… that wasn’t true. It was just she never displayed concern to the extent that she’d actually touch him. Maybe there was a time when she would say that someone should see Teddie or Yukiko, someone who could heal injuries, but never herself trying to play the doctor.

”Uh…s’fine’” He quickly stated when she seemed to take a closer examination of it. Why was she fussing over it? He had gotten worse from Shadows. It was hardly anything to worry about in his opinion. He felt his chest give a familiar clench at her fussing and he was half tempted to turn away to hide the building rush of heat in his face.

Then came the anger and lecture that he was not surprised to hear come from her mouth. He didn’t bother to mention that he had already faced thugs in the past that had wielded knives, or the fact that up until a few months ago, their after school activities consisted of fighting things that transformed into tanks. He didn’t mention any of this because he knew it wouldn’t help his case any. So he just continued to stand there awkwardly and allow her to lecture him.

When she was finished she apologized for her outburst. Honestly, Kanji didn’t know what to do or say. He gave a nonchalant shrug, ”It’s cool.” He said for lack of anything better to say to defend himself or to try and get her in better spirits. It was always the same, when it came to Naoto, his brain would freeze up and he wouldn’t be able to say anything much for fear of appearing or seeming stupid because of something he said.

She was offering her aid to obtain ointment. He shuffled in his steps and had an awkward moment pass while his imagination carried him to a scene where he’d be sitting in a seat with Naoto hunched in front of him while she used her hands to apply ointment to his face. With his bad luck, he’d break out in a nosebleed if that ever happened and gross or freak Naoto out. Or she’d think maybe his nose was also cracked in the fight and offer to look over his ‘damaged’ nose as well. Damn…

”S’nothin’. Ain’t like I gotten worst in the past. Can take care of it myself when I get home.” He offered up to keep her from worrying about it. Wasn’t he the one usually fussing over her? Damn he was confused. Girls were weird to begin with. Naoto was even worse. ”Uh.. what about you?” He asked stupidly considering the question didn’t have any sense to follow the conversation. Obviously Naoto was in no need for ointment but Kanji was never the brightest. It’s why he often tried to just keep his mouth shut. He felt that he appeared smarter around her if he spoke less.

Thankfully, Kanji seemed to forgive Naoto's sudden outburst. The boy seemed to be thinking for a small amount of time before he told the female detective that he'd be able to do it at home. Well at least he had a plan, maybe the wound would heal soon enough. Even Naoto felt a little awkward about the boy at the moment, the small ways he seemed to react for when she talked. He always did act like this, but Naoto never knew why. That unfortunately was a mystery that even she couldn't solve.

He had then asked her if she needed any ointment, something that confused her a bit.

"Uhh....I don't have any scars," She said, wondering why he brought that up. Was he nervous about something? Him being nervous gave her a bit of an uneasy feeling.

'What is he thinking about...?' Shirogane asked herself mentally, not daring to let the words slip out of her mouth. While her mind thought, her stomach let out a loud grumble, making her blush a little bit since it came out of nowhere.

"Oh uhh...." She said, then remembering that she has not told her companion about the invitation she acquired a day or so ago.

"Since Aiya's not too far away, did you want to have a meal with me? There's something I want to discuss with you there as well," Said the female persona user. Naoto thought of this as a casual invitation to a meal, to discuss a somewhat important matter. Kanji on the other, would he take this invitation as a date? If so, things may get a little awkward between the two if that matter had been brought up. Both of them had usually brought out the weirdness in the other. And it would only continue to get more so...

True story she didn’t have any injuries. He didn’t even really know why the heck he had even asked to the begin with. ’And for coming off as an idiot, point to Kanji Tatsumi.’ He thought to himself grumpily. Maybe one of these days he would end up saying something that was intelligent rather then completely asinine. Hell, it wasn’t even with Naoto that he had trouble communicating. It was with everyone! Sempai, Rise, and even Rio! He had no skills in socializing whatsoever.

He was about to excuse himself and head home when Naoto came out and invited him to a meal. He stared at her for a long time while he tried to work his brain into registering with what the heck was going on. While at first the question made his mind go into a sheer blind panic because it almost…. almost sounded like some sort of date, the explanation to the invite quickly wiped that idea away. She wanted to discuss something with him and for the life of him he couldn’t even fathom what it possibly could be.

With her sudden outburst of him being in another fight, it was possible that she wanted to discuss and further lecture him on the matter. Something Sempai had done in the past. He would bring Kanji to Aiya for a bite to eat (it was Kanji’s favorite place after all) and would seem like a friendly outing until Sempai would use the opportunity to grill him about his behavior or lack of school attendance. It felt like one of those moments to him suddenly; except instead of sempai, it was Naoto. Unlike Sempai, where Kanji would shut up and listen to every word because he respected him, Kanji always hung onto every word that came out of Naoto’s mouth. It was difficult really….

Even if she was going to grill him about the fact., it was still going to be just the two of them, eating… alone. He wasn’t sure if he had the stomach or the nor to handle being in such an uncomfortable setting; despite how gleeful he felt about the prospect. Seriously, how much had he strived to just have some quality time alone with Naoto in the past? It didn’t help matters that nowadays, after the case was solved, he sort of closed himself off into his room everyday and pretty much separated himself from the team unless one of them contacted him personally. He was having personal issues again, things left un-dealt with, or things that he thought he put behind him.

Still, even if he wanted to decline the offer, there was no reason for him to do so. Aiya was practically right outside his own front door. He turned his back to Naoto to hide the fact that he couldn’t stare at her any longer without breaking out into a blush or a nosebleed, ”S-sure. Uh… sounds great.” He shoved his hands into his pockets, ”Well, l-lets go then.” He commented before taking the lead and moving forward.

Luckily, Kanji had agreed to accompany her on the meal and discussion. However, there hadn't been much noise from either of the adolescents, maybe an occasional cough or two. At times, Naoto even began to think that the boy had been staring at her? Staring...? That did nothing but made her feel a little bit uneasy during their traveling, wondering why he was looking at her. In the past, their friends had made 'jokes' about the two of them, but was the sewer really interested in her? No, she must have just looked awkward at times, yes that's it.

Now at the samegawa flood plain...

The duo were walking on the quiet road, both of them having pockets in hand. The sound of running water was the only thing heard over their footsteps, making the detective feel a bit more composed about the situation. However, that would not seem to last very long. Up ahead, that was the cause of this upcoming conflict. A boy had been riding a shiny blue bicycle, the sun rays reflecting off of the new metal.

"WATCH OUT!" Yelled the rider, Naoto just noticing him a bit before Kanji did. Trying to make sure they didn't get hurt, Naoto used as much strength as possible to push bleach haired boy out of the way, but she had been hit a bit by the bike. This caused both of the duo to fall onto the ground, the female detective's head resting on Kanji's neck.

"Sorry!" The driver yelled as he quickly picked up his bike and drove off.

Awkward.

That was what this situation was. The girl slowly lifted up her head, and instantly blushed from her position. She had been too flustered to know what to do. This was something that Naoto could never act good in, any events that related or even seemed 'sexual'. Right now, her face was as red as a tomato, still so close to the boy.

Kanji did and thought of anything that would keep his mind from going into panic mood over the fact that he was walking alone with Naoto again. It felt like that time she had met up with him after school and they had walked together that first time. Of course, she was interested in interrogating him and Kanji thought Naoto was a boy and didn’t know what the heck was going on at the time. This time there was no interrogation (that he was aware of at least) but it was still unnerving.

So he started thinking about the one thing that always seemed to help him keep his mind off of things he didn’t want to stress over: food. He mentally went through the menu at Aiya and considered what it was that he could eat when he got there. His favorite dish was the special they had on rainy days. It was such a huge dish that even he couldn’t finish. Sadly it wasn’t raining though so he would have to consider something else.

’Wonder if I should pick up some animal crackers on the way home’ He thought to himself. He was still on the hunt for the elusive penguin cracker. One day that sneaky little bastard would fall into his hands.

He was so distracted with distracting himself that he didn’t even hear the biker shout at him. He simply kept on walking without a care in the world and would have continued to do so if it weren’t for the fact that someone had effectively jumped him.

A incoherent noise shot out from his mouth as he was ‘attacked’ and might have enjoyed the fact that Naoto ended up on top of him in such a compromising position if it weren’t for the fact that a rather large rock had decided to make itself act as a nice pillow for the back of his head to land on. At first he felt his head daze as stars appeared before his eyes. He looked rather bewildered as he came to with a ‘what the hell just happened?’ type of look. The only problem was that he was starring right up into Naoto’s face which was entirely far too close for him to handle with ease.

If it were any other guy aside from Kanji, he likely would have reacted differently, taken advantage of a crush practically sprawled out in front of him. No Kanji. No no, he didn’t know a good opportunity when it knocked him alongside the head, literally. He literally spazzed out and shot out from under Naoto via reverse crab walk until he was a good three feet or so away from her.

And of course, the whole situation he immediately assumed he was guilty of it happening in the first place even if he didn’t know what he heck happened. This was Naoto after all, she never did anything wrong in his book. ”Sh-, crap sorry, uh… dunno what the heck happ’n, think I tripped or sumthin’” He mouthed off rapidly once he was at his feet. It was a lame excuse but he couldn’t even fathom how he had ended up on the ground to begin with. He vaguely recalled someone shouting one moment.

”Wanna jus’ forget ‘bout Aiya? Prolly. Ma prolly needs help or sumthin anyway so I could jus’ do that instead.”

Kanji Mental Note: Shut up.

Mental Note Progressing…. Complete.

The girl managed to get herself off of the boy as he awkwardly got out from under her. Why did awkward things have to happen whenever they were along with one another? Every single time...out of the few.

”Sh-, crap sorry, uh… dunno what the heck happ’n, think I tripped or sumthin’” He said. This made the female detective frown a bit, along with a tint blush.

"N-No need to say sorry, it was my fault. Some person was about to hit you with their bike and I didn't want you to get hurt. I'm umm....sorry," She said, giving a small bow and trying not to blush any further. This had been the closest she ever was with a boy, it felt so foreign. Sturdy. Strong. Safe. That would have to be how she described it. The girl didn't realize it, but Naoto didn't hate it. In fact, it felt nice to be in such a position, even by accident.

”Wanna jus’ forget ‘bout Aiya? Prolly. Ma prolly needs help or sumthin anyway so I could jus’ do that instead.” Kanji said, the blue haired female looking up to him.

"A-Actually I would like to...join you if you didn't mind...," Said Naoto with another blush. Wait. She could just tell the boy the news about the tournament here, so why was she trying to follow him? His presence was kind of...nice. Their relationship always seemed to strange. At times it may be close, and at other times it would be far. Right now...it just felt like the typical 'oh it's time to sweep that girl off her feet' moment.

"I could go occupy myself with something else if you wanted to be alone," The girl said in case he didn't want her with him, not realizing his crush on her.

She wanted to join him? Now it really did seem like she wanted something or needed to interrogate him for some odd reason. He tried to think of anything he might have done that warranted suspicion but he came up empty-handed. His suspicion is justified; however, he couldn’t exactly recall a single time Naoto actually went out of her way to ‘hang out’ with someone without any ulterior motives up her sleeve.

It just seemed odd to begin with that she wanted to join him to Tatsumi Textiles after he stated that his ma needed some help most likely. He would be stuck working (in theory considering he likely would have just gone straight to his room and buried his face in his pillow from shame) so she’d just be stuck standing around watching him.

He held up his hands and waved them in front of him when she mentioned she could go occupy herself, ”No!” That came out a little too loudly and enthusiastically. He almost cringed before he dropped his arms from in front of him and to his sides.

”Uh… it’s fine. Y’know… whatever ya want to do is fine with me.” Although he hadn’t actually planned on actually helping his mom with any work if she needed it; but if Naoto planned on going with him then that means he’d likely have to ask if his ma needed help just out of principle (as in he didn’t want to look bad in front of Naoto).
