Meleke

You step down to look around the pink grass checking for signs of the thief's departure, and you happen upon indents along the ground: the pink grass crushed underfoot, only beginning to rise back up, leading off in the direction of, if you were to consider the direction the portal is facing 'north', due east of your current position. You do not find any items that may have belonged to the thief, but the trail appears strong.

As you inspect the surroundings, though, you feel the trees and grass and get a different sensation than that you'd expect of the material. The tree's bark feels as strong and hard as solid steel, and the blades of grass feel like thin gold sheets as you touch them. The smell of hot metal burns in your nostrils the closer you look at them.

James

"I'm afraid I may not have heard, I only recently returned to Rogrest myself. But nonetheless, very impressive James. Your services will be most appreciated in this endeavor... though if you're anticipating a cut, I'm not sure if I'll be able to oblige. In honesty, I was not expecting to pay any of you for the deed of retrieving the gems," he ruffles his red hair, "But, there's a point in doing so seeing as how you are going above and beyond in helping us. If you," he turns to the rest of the party, "Or any of you, feel a need for compensation, please inform me. I'll see what the Temple of the Planes or the nobleship of Torn can do to accommodate."

Looking around, you do not find the trail that Meleke steps upon, but you notice the same sensation about the trees and grass. They feel as though they're entirely made of metal.

Herschel

Reginald looks at you for a bit, and then digs underneath his plate armor to pull at a necklace underneath. Pulling it out, you see it a small metal tag adorned with an emblem: that of the Winged Company of Torn.

"I mentioned I was raised by a small mercenary band in Torn. Your sister, as I'm sure you know, was Sergeant Pierce. She was my instructor in sword-play," he brandishes his sheathed sabers, "She was a very good friend, too: truth be told, I considered the Winged Company my family from a young age. When she disappeared during Mrzfdpnk's invasion, I did not take the news well... as I imagine you didn't."

"I left the company not long after to work with the pioneers of the portal, so I could enter it as quickly as I could and find Sergeant Pierce. My chance finally arrived a year ago, but," he leans up against a tree, sighing, "I've entered dozens of different planes. Even found a few leads, I think, but those ended up going nowhere in the end. I've yet to find her." He looks at you, and smiles, "I can't suppose you're planning anything less of the same thing, being here. She mentioned a little brother. Told me he wasn't so handy in a melee, though. I of course mean the best, but I can hardly imagine any one sharing her blood is anything short of remarkable with a blade."

---

You pick up a few leaves from the branch, their texture feeling smooth and unyielding as you rub your fingers along its metal texture, the fragrance of hot iron strong in your nose as you hold it close, and you save it for later. You prepare your spell book and cast a field of magical detection over the nearby area. The portal itself contains a strong aura around it, but there doesn't appear to be a trail of magical essence in the air to follow. However, you do notice one shimmering glow along the ground, one almost missed as it hides under a strong patch of pink, metallic grass: a cyan colored stone, identical to Reginald's lies in the grass, the only glow it gives off being that of your spell's aura.

Kioko

The landing is hardly graceful, but not embarrassing either: you roll to a stop upon hitting the ground, landing on your side before picking yourself back up. Looking around, you see deep into the forest of trees, but cannot see anything else for several hundred yards in any direction before a tree blocks the path. It is a very thick wood, but as you observe the immediate area around, your eyes spot a trail of imprints along the grass left behind by a previous visitor, none too old, as well as the slight glint of a cyan-colored gem among the patches of grass. The gem begins to glow as Herschel casts his spell, making it more clear as its magical properties are visualized.

You climb the iron trees and brush against he metal leaves as you take Reginald's suggestion and begin climbing up to the top of the nearest tree. It ascends about 30 feet up, the branches providing ample material for stepping though its smooth and metallic surface provides a slickness that is hard to grasp on too. You make your way through the tree line, and look above as your head pokes above the top.

Looking around, you find this pink forest extends for quite some distance, surrounding on one side by a mountain, similarly covered in the trees up to its peak, and a purple lake on the opposite side (if the portal's opening were to be considered North, it would be East). The view extends for quite some distance... eventually so much so that it begins to incline. Looking around the sky as you observe the land begin to curve upwards towards the sun, you find the entirety of the sky is, infact, more pink forests, purple oceans, and brown landscapes that extend all the way to white lands of tundra at opposite ends of the massive bowl this geography finds itself it. Above is the sun, shining brightly, at the core of this land, surrounding in all directions by a Dyson Sphere stretching for countless miles.

There are no signs of any towns through the thicket of the trees, but there is a small stack of smoke coming from the direction of the lake through a few trees.

ALL

As you all discuss the situation of keeping a guard around the portal to see if the thief returns to try and take it back, Reginald voices his piece to Kioko, Herschel, and James.

"It's very possible she does know something of how they work: while it may have been an accident, she did successfully use a box of Planar Gems to pass through the portal. She may have an inkling of how they work, and therefore, may be aware of the time limit to return."

"But," he scratches his head, "It's also possible that she didn't. And even if she did, we don't have that sort of time. If we don't make find them in time, the portal to Torn will be out of range until this dimension happens upon it again. Though the possibility she may know that," he taps his chin, "What if we split ourselves? Some stay with the portal and set up a watch for her return, the rest split into the forest trying to find her and the gems? We could use this portal as a base and check back in at regular intervals, set up patrols, take shifts, and so on. It is only one thief, we may not need all of us at once to apprehend her."

At the mention of winged company Maleke pipes up. "You are Ragged Reggie? HAR HAR HAR! Tabitha mocked your style and tempo constantly when you were training. Good to see you made something of your self." Then he continues to search.

When his eyes spot the bent grass he follows it a little ways just to make sure he has a clear picture of the path. Then he calls up to Kioko. "Oy, what be down this [direction indicated as east]?"

As I climb I point out the gem I see in the grass. "This tree seems to be made of metal not wood" I say one I get a good hold.

"This place is crazy, the sun is enclosed by the ground!" I call down in awe. "The is a lake to the [east] with smoke from that direction and a mountain to the [west] I don't see anything that indicates there are towns or anything" I call back to Meleke.

I climb down a bit to better talk with the others.

Ted frowns. "I'm not much of a survivalist, myself. We'll need at least one person who has some ability to track go with each party. And each squad can't be short on firepower, either. I don't mind standing first watch, or going into the forest if one who knows the ways of the thief can get us on her path. "
