Mega-City One is entering an election year to determine the Mayor of Mega-City One. However, the real political power in Mega-City One is not held by the mayor but by the unelected judges, headed by the Chief Judge. That said, the citizens are allowed some very limited degree of self-government in the form of a democratically elected council headed by a mayor, with powers over relatively minor matters and the authority to make representations to Justice Department. The Incumbent Mayor: Glenn Neal (NPC). A man of the people to some and to others nothing more than the usual corrupt politician handing out favours to his cronies. He has been accused of having ties with gangs, primarily those involved in drug trafficking. Although these accusations could be written off as an attack instigated by his political rivals the Hall of Justice has begun opening a file on him just to be sure. Or, merely to provide the Chief Judge with leverage over him. His campaign slogan is "Progress You Know" referencing the fact that his time in office has largely been seen as a success despite rampant crime and the suggestions that he has a hand in at least some of it. Santos Day(NPC) is Mayor Neal's Deputy Mayor and also his brother in law through marriage to Victoria Neal, the Mayor's older sister. The two men are old friends and came up together in the political world. The Other Candidates: Although the title of Mayor is largely without power over 200 parties still select candidates to represent them and run for the office. With a population of 800 million and counting 200 parties doesn't sound all that much. One prominent candidate who has entered the race early is Stella Haden (V.V.), daughter of business mogul Thomas Haden, president and CEO of Hexia Robotics Corp. It is largely believed she is a puppet of her father and is only running to increase Thomas' power and influence in the city. Her campaign slogan is "Secure the Future". A reference to the recent Apocalypse War which saw forces of East-Meg One (Russia) brutally attacking Mega-City One. As MC-1 recovers and rebuilds Stella is playing on patriotic sympathies of the citizens and capitalizing on the heavy anti-Sov sentiments prevalent in the city. It should be noted too that Hexia Corp is a large conglomerate whose robotics division is largely blamed for the rampant unemployment in Mega-City One, thus her father and the Hexia Corp are not popular among voters in the lower sectors of the city. Stella's campaign manager is Edith Holt, a relative unknown on the MC-1 political scene much like Stella. Edith is Stella's mentor and was once an employee of Hexia Corp, working in the Marketing and PR division. For now the race is wide open and anyone with enough backing may enter the campaign. To enter players must pledge 25 Credits. |
