Board Play Introducing Stella Haden, the first candidate to throw her hat into the election ring to challenge the incumbent Mayor, Glenn Neal. More information regarding the Election can be found [ Here ]. The Speaker's Square was supposedly a place where all citizens of Mega-City One could come to publicly vent their frustrations and speak their mind with impunity from the long arm of the law. Here in the square nothing was sacred, no topic too controversial or off limits. Not even talk of Democratic reform which directly challenged the full and supreme authority of the Chief Judge who ruled over Mega-City One with little in way of checks and balances. Today, a young spirited man stood in the center of the square speaking his impassioned words through a mega phone which sent his voice soaring over the immediate area as he called for reforms that would see power restored to the people through duly elected officials representing the masses, not the rigid concepts of law and order, but the spirit of all humanity. However, when the tinny whine of that lone voice projected through the crackling megaphone began likening the Chief Judge to a robot, the tinted glass window of a parked vehicle lowered to let in the dull roar of that singular voice now turning its wrath on the cold, hard fact that technology, like that observed in the army of robotic life now performing various functions in every day life, was to blame for the ills of the people... "It was technology that stole our jobs and put us out on the street in the first place. It was technology that allowed the Sov's to destroy our city and butcher our people with terrifying ease...and it will be technology, no doubt stamped with the Hexia Corp logo, that will usher us with cold, unfeeling efficiency to our extinction." "The Judges, the Council of Five, even the Mayor with their H-Wagons and robotic servitors are nothing more than drones for the big corporations, shepherding us toward the cliff..." As the minutes were filled with the continued rantings of the young revolutionary the door to the white armoured vehicle opened and from it the elegant and statuesque figure of Stella Haden appeared dressed in a charcoal grey blazer and pencil skirt. Her wealth was worn with simple grace, nothing outlandish or garish in display, and as she smartly smoothed the lines of her blazer and skirt in preparation to confront the Democrat in the square a voice called from the back seat of the vehicle, "Don't do it..." With barely a glance paid over her shoulder Stella Haden ignored her campaign manager's advice and calmly entered the fray to arrive in the square where spectators were heard cheering and applauding with enthusiasm instead of pelting the speaker with fruit or rocks as was commonly the case in the Speaker's Square. Even the paid hecklers were unusually absent and silent as the young soldier continued to rally those he was seeking recruit to his cause of Democracy. However, with the arrival of such a high profile figure like the Stella Haden the crowd of onlookers parted and some observed her arrival with notable disbelief as the tall, statuesque Stella casually breezed past wearing a serene smile upon her features. Sensing he had momentarily lost the crowd the young man with the megaphone turned around and was equally stunned to find the candidate for office of Mayor standing right behind him. Pleased with his reaction and that of the crowd Stella paid him a smug look before turning to address the people of Mega-City One without use of the annoying megaphone. "I think this citizen forgets that technology also helps keeps us safe. The men and women of the Hall of Justice are the bravest of the brave who daily put their lives on the line to hunt down the criminal and those who would seek to destroy our city from within. Should they not have the benefit of doing their jobs with the best and latest innovations meant to keep them safe while in harm's way? Not to mention it was through their hard work and sacrifice that they eventually paved the way to victory against the Sovs..." "Victory!? More like genocide. An entire city was wiped out! Millions of people dead!" The young man roared before Stella fired back, "Justice was served! When your enemy shows himself to be brutal and without remorse, you do not make peace with him and simply hope for the best. You make sure 'NEVER AGAIN!' And it will be a cold day in hell before the Sovs ever dare to remotely thinking of attacking Mega-City One again!" Playing upon the patriotic vibe still heavily felt within the city a year and a half after the end of the Apocalypse War, the deep scars of which were evident all across the city, Stella tapped into the hatred of the East-Meg One, now completely destroyed, to galvanize the crowd and win them over to her side, "I am my father's daughter it is true, I do not deny I lived a comfortable existence, but that does not mean I do not walk with you or share your concerns, I have eyes, we all see what is happening to our once great beacon of hope that is Mega-City One, but let us not forget that in order to forge a new destiny allies are required. Alienating the Chief Judge, and the Hall of Justice, will not accomplish reform it will only cause them to dig in and resist change or new ideas. That said we need leaders willing to speak their minds while also representing the facts accurately and who speak from a place of reality. The reality is innovation, not revolution, will help us into the future. A future we must secure for ourselves, together." Turning to the forgotten idealist and his megaphone Stella brought it all home by boldly proclaiming, "That's why a vote for Stella Haden is a vote for a secure future. Secure the Future! Thank you for listening and good evening." And turning to make her way back through the crowd which offered a lukewarm reaction consisting of small rounds of applause and the buzzing of voices in conversation and debate, Stella made her way into the crowd and proceeded to greet people, shaking hands and pausing for selfies ever popular in this day in age. Even if the people were not eagerly falling to her side it was an important introduction occurring outside the glare of media cameras and talk shows. A real grass roots approach. Folksy. That's still a term used in the cold concrete future of Mega-City One. -Hours Later at the Haden Campaign Headquarters- "What the hell was that today!? He swore to me he'd leave Hexia out of it. He assured me he and his people would have my back. Instead, I got to roll on up in there and clean up the shit pile his people are spreading all over the place. What I ought to have done is shove that megaphone up that little twerp's skinny white ass!" Stella roared while pouring herself a stiff drink from the bar while her campaign manager, Edith, poured over her datapad managing the day to day campaign business which included a constant stream of polling data. Even this early on in the election the data was important but looking up from the compact screen Edith would frown while cautioning, "Stop talking like that. The minute you start talking like that, the chance of slipping up in public increases. Besides, that's why you have him." Making a face after downing her Scotch, Stella looked around the headquarters before slowly sinking into a large, leather chair behind her desk and toying with the crystal glass in her hand she pondered if she truly desired to call on 'him' or let the matter slide. Edith, noting the far off thoughtful look in her candidate would let her chew on that notion in quiet contemplation before turning back to her datapad and the stats streaming across its screen in quick sequence. Indeed, today Stella had distinguished herself according to the numbers but it was a modest blip yet momentum to build upon all the same. |
