Not a great meeting. While campaigning in a Displaced Persons Camp, Stella inadvertently incites a riot and nearly gets herself tossed into the Iso-Cubes! Props to Judge Keates for playing it straight and true---he does not mess around. . Stella | Haden . Candidate for Mayor Room Admin | MC-1 | PoD - -Is street level somewhere in Mega-City One.- says to ALL: -It was another rather warm and sunny day in the city but where the armoured limousine carrying the 2105 mayoral candidate Stella Haden eventually stopped it was always dark and bleak. After the devastating Apocalypse War perpetrated by East-Meg One a year and half earlier, Mega-City One had not only suffered an enormous amount of casualties but also loss of vital infrastructure. Several Mega-Blocks had been destroyed and other street level buildings levelled leaving millions homeless and forced into camps where they waited for relocation. Some might find their way into vacancies in the Blocks but many others were not so fortunate.- -After a few last words with her campaign manager the limo’s large door would eventually be opened by the driver who was now flanked by a number of other campaign employees and a security detail. The men were dressed in combat fatigues and armed with Hexia Corp weaponry but Stella intended they do not take the lead but rather remain in the peripheral. It would not look good on her if she were to arrive simply to intimidate and disrupt the daily lives of those who existed here. As always appearances mattered.- -Dressed down today in loose fitting cargo pants and a white blouse Stella stood at the entrance to the gate which was guarded by members of the Hall of Justice, many of whom were street level Judges. They were respectful but otherwise indifferent to the entourage as the senior Judge in command gave his briefing, warning Stella and the other civilians about to enter that the mood and morale of the people within was quite low. This was an extreme understatement to Stella who smiled appreciatively to the Judge simply doing his job although secretly in her thoughts she already dismissed him as a mere functionary, colourless, without personality. A simple face of the Law. Order, security that was all they were concerned with, not compassion or the betterment of these people and their existences. With wearing that serene and slightly condescending smile Stella turned to her employees and security detail afterward to offer.- “We are aware of the mood within the camp. We will remain respectful and mindful of the atmosphere, and the media will only talk to those who consent to speak on camera.” -Her dark gaze focusing briefly on the gaggle of news reporters invited to join in on the tour of the camp and with their assurances that all would go as she declared Stella would turn and begin making her way into the “Displaced Persons Camp” basically a refugee camp where the homeless and the destitute were maintained until the rebuilding was complete.- . Stella | Haden . Candidate for Mayor Room Admin | MC-1 | PoD - -Vast areas of waste ground set aside as temporary housing for millions of homeless citizens on the Housing List. An average DP Camp is built from pre-fabricated materials surrounded by electromesh fences. Riots among the inhabitants regularly break out here.- says to ALL: -Upon breaching the gates of the camp which was surrounded by electromesh fencing the stench of human waste came in one overpowering wave to greet the group of outsiders. Startled by the magnitude of the awful stench Stella pressed on with her campaign manager looking on at her carefully from where she followed close to her left. Making their way down the broad avenue bordered on either side by dwellings made of prefabricated materials scrounged from rubble and other parts of the city the group got a first hand glance at the effects of war and poverty. The occupants of the camp lingered in the doorways of these dwellings while others milled about in groups hovering around barrels filled with burning fires kept going not for warmth but to burn the trash and other waste that combined with the lingering stench hanging over the camp. For a brief moment Stella felt her resolve wavering and her pace slowing with hesitation until a voice within told her not to give in and crumble under the weight of such overwhelming suffering. Coming here was not a hardship, it was a duty. HER duty. Thus, with her chin high and shoulders raised Stella continued into the camp where she and the small group were about to be swallowed up in one gigantic wave of human misery. The security detail, the Judges at their posts or even patrolling the camp were useless and Stella soon told herself they could not be relied upon while they walked into the belly of this beast. This was either going to result in an incredibly high pay off or a disaster of equally incredible measure, only time and the reception of the inhabitants would tell…- . Stella | Haden . An average DP Camp is built from pre-fabricated materials surrounded by electromesh fences. Riots among the inhabitants regularly break out here.- says to ALL: -Eventually as they ventured deeper into the camp word began circulating of the visitors which resulted in larger crowds appearing along the avenue Stella and her entourage walked. Her eyes scanned the faces many of which held hostile expressions while others looked vacant with a distant look of one lost or simply numb. As time went on and each side simply took to observing the other Stella found her resolve once more and forced herself past uncertainty to begin interacting with the crowds of people. With a hand stretching out she’d engage men and women, families and even children, introducing herself as though she was new to the neighbourhood which Stella certainly was but in no way was she looking to remain here. Rather, she hoped to make an impact such that her image, her presence would have a lasting place among the camp and its unfortunate inhabitants well after she was gone. After all everyone here of age was a potential vote which come Election Day might spell her eventual rise to power. Most were reluctant to shake her hand but as more warmed to her out of simmering curiousity more than anything Stella went on to explain her reasoning for being here.- “I understand that you have faced innumerable hardships over the past months, more than most anyone could ever hope to endure, but I wanted to assure you all here that despite how it may appear not everyone in Mega-City One has forgotten you. I had to see this place and to let you know we see you, we have not forgotten you.”-But words of comfort were not what these people needed although Stella was only getting started, testing the crowd as it were, and inviting them in to her world to listen and hopefully get a sense of her vision. She was also aware that her employees were on edge now, fearful that they had under estimated the size of the camp and the people within it but as her security detail warned the people to remain back Stella waved them down. The Judges were already maintaining a harsh brand of order here, she would not mirror their conventional approach even knowing the risks of daring to be so cavalier and trusting of the people’s moods.- . Stella | Haden .Candid: He was in the camp today, bedecked in his Judge's uniform. Beyond what most people thought of Judge's he wasn't the typical one. He was knelt down by a younger child, offering up a small packet to the child, one of his 'contacts' within the camp that he paid very well for their information.... food for the entire family. He nodded as the little, grungy boy told him the big news of the day and then stood up, eyeing the growing crowd and blinking a little bit as he tipped his head and lifted the little boy up onto his shoulders, letting him see over the crowd, only to hear him declare, "There's a pretty lady in the middle! She's all clean!" Well, that was news to the Judge. Sitting the boy down, he sent him off to his small hovel he shared with six others before heading toward the crowd, moving people aside for him with a light touch of his hand as the crowd started to heckle the woman who treated them to only words and no actions. An average DP Camp is built from pre-fabricated materials surrounded by electromesh fences. Riots among the inhabitants regularly break out here.- says to ALL: -Indeed after speaking the growing number of people became irritable and began to voice their discontent while sharing their stories of struggle with Stella who listened with what looked to be genuine concern but also an underlying feeling of despair…even anger that people were being forced to live this way. All she felt was meaningless to the camp’s inhabitants and soon the anger began to be conveyed in accusations that Stella and others like her were nothing more than opportunists, rich fucks who lived safe and well, they didn’t really care about the people of Mega-City One. They were wrong and soon Stella was fielding the expected demands of just what she would do as Mayor, what could she possibly do that others already in power couldn’t, or wouldn’t. It was precisely the question she had been waiting for and she rose to the occasion while demanding calm and the ears of those who now surrounded her.- “I will tell you what I would do. First, I'd encourage the Chief Judge to adopt a nationalist agenda which would clear out the streets and Blocks of every last Sov (Russian) and deport them out of Mega-City One to make room for true Meggers like yourselves! Anyone with the wrong name, the wrong accent, would be gone. True Meggers for Mega-City One!"-It was a catchphrase that had polled well with certain demographics and Stella could already sense how pleased and excited her campaign manager was as she kept her nose down, glued to that datapad where real time stats and polling data streamed. Meanwhile, the media pressed closer, training their cameras and microphones on Stella as she went on to work the crowd which was initially shocked and yet observed nodding with approval. Others however, those first and second generation immigrants with Sov roots though were not so approving and no doubt were beginning to worry at what they were witnessing.-"After all it was the Sov's who attacked us and with such ease that it is now clear they had inside help. And I tell you what citizens, after we find them and root them out of the Blocks, we're going to put them in camps just like this! Why should you suffer and wallow in misery while Sov spies live the good life in the Blocks!? YOUR Blocks!?"-It was then her hand was raised to point to the skyline in the distance and the towering monolithic giants looming in the smog filled haze which constant hung over the city.-"It is time we took back our city and I vow here and now I, Stella Haden, will fight along side of you with all that I am!"-Her voice soon swallowed up in a sudden wave of applause and cheers which equated to the first sign of real hope these people had seen and felt in a long time. It almost brought a tear to Stella's eye but her gaze was squarely set on the prize while imagining just how triumphant she must have looked on the vid-screens across the city.- 1/15/16 11:31) . Pulvis et Umbra Sumu: “And you know what else, citizens? This here camp is some sorry ass bullshit, we know we can do better than this which is why tomorrow Hexia Corp will begin construction on improvements to this and other camps in the city. This may only be a temporary solution but this is Mega-City One. The world looks to us as a shining example of all that is possible in our world so let’s show them just how tall we can stand even when confronting the horror and aftermath of a war. A war we didn’t start…but which we sure as hell finished!”-A candidate cussing!? Now this brought her campaign manager out of the world of live streaming polling data as Stella went a little off script just then but somehow in that moment she reverted to some stereotypical black sass in a bid to make her seem more relatable. After all her policy was rather controversial so why not go off track into full on maverick territory and be the candidate known with the straight shooting talk? In a race that sometimes fielded up to 200 candidates it was important to stand out anyway you could and so Stella would do so now as the polished woman with a privileged background but who wasn’t afraid to tell it like it is. As applause and cheers broke out her manager seemed to calm somewhat while the reporters attempted to edge in and question Stella about her proposal but as the crush of bodies began to crowd her she was swept up in a tide of adulation and frantic bids to shake her hand and thank her for speaking what was on so many minds. Without concern for her safety against attack or even disease Stella gladly shook hands with the camp’s inhabitants and smiled for the cameras of course while in the background the roar of hover engines slowly gained everyone’s attention until several craft boasting the Hexia Corp logo with banners trailing after them broadcasting the Haden Campaign’s slogan, “Secure the Future” soared overhead. As gazes turned to the skies at the well coordinated aerial display they’d further observe as the hatch doors of the craft opened up to begin depositing aid packages which were parachuted into the camp. It wasn’t long until cheers of adulation began to give way to a frantic rush and soon the harsh reality of what desperation does to those in need…- A player in the room is currently... [ In Storyteller Mode ] says to ALL: At first there was an awe filled silence that was observed after the Hexia Corp hover crafts did their majestic fly over but as the parachutes opened to slow the descent of the aid packages drifting toward the ground the silence gave way to a murmur of excitement and even appreciation, until suddenly as everyone pressed in the direction of the packages frantic screams were heard as people soon fought and clamoured for the packages all at once. Women and children were thrust aside for their safety but also to ensure they did not get to the front while men scrapped and fought for the packages despite the warning of those Judges in the fray now mobilized to take control of the near rioting powder keg that was the camp. .x. Stella | Haden .Candid: Brig got close enough to hear her shouting out what she would do and he shook his head some, frowning a bit and resting his hands on his hips. He didn't like the sounds of this, pitting people against others, blaming them for the misery and destution that had plagued this part of the city. "Fucking politicans," he muttered under his breath as he snorted some and turned his back on the woman, seeking a way out of the crowd once again. He'd heard enough, it wasn't plesant, and it left a rather bad taste in his mouth. Consider him a Judge with a concious, but just because you have the wrong accent, didn't make you a spy, and it didn't make you deserve getting thrown in a shit hole like this. He moved around a few of those Sov 'spies' that she was busy yelling about and talking about... right before one of 'true meggers' decided it would be a good idea to start the end of the Sov controlled populace right then and there. It happened almost too quickly for words, a knife flashed out, going after the father, but Keates stepped in, blocking the attack, twisting the arm, forcing the assialant to drop the knife as he jerked the other forward and into his arms, pinning him down against the larger judge. "Stop struggling, you have been seen trying to assult your fellow citizen. How do you plead?" He wanted to know as the man cried out that he wasn't guilty. "Your plea has been heard, you have been found guilty and have been charged with 6 months in an Iso-cube," he declared, pulling the man away from the crowd, cuffing him and attaching him to a holding post while he called for a wagon to pick up the new prisoner. His eyes were cold beneath the helmet he wore. He looked back at the large crowd, surging around and cheering, his jaw set hard. He plunged into the crowd once more, pushing and shoving his way through toward the canidate who had caused this issue. He pushed into the center and moved toward her, reaching out and gripping her elbow, not hard, not some sort of brute tactic to make her feel pain, but enough to get her attention as he leaned in. "If you are not careful, I will have enough to try you for crimes against the City," he pointed out to her, "Exciting the populace, starting riots, acts against Sov's..." he pointed out, trying to be 'nice' so to speak, even if he wasn't feeling very nice with the way she was yelling and shouting. And then all hell broke loose with those aid packets, he was battered and buffeted about by people yelling and screaming, shouting as they scrambled for those boxes. "Jesus... what the fuck?!" He grunted, hitting his communicator and calling for backup as fights broke loose everywhere, and the man on the post... dead, with no idea who had done it. His eyes turned back to the woman with the mouth and he frowned heavily at her. "Inciting a riot!" He called over the roar of the crowd, "1 to 15 years in an iso-cube!" Did she understand what she was doing? Did she know he sure as hell wasn't going to look the other way because of who she was? Shit, a man's job was never done was it? -.- . Stella | Haden . Pulvis et Umbra Sumu: -Stella became aware of the turn in the camp’s mood and atmosphere in what was now a powder keg set to explode but as the Judge rushed her, seizing hold of her to issue the warning her security team was ready to react regardless of the figure of authority now pressing the weight of the Law against their employer. For her part Stella was ready to answer the warning with a response that would have conveyed her willingness to comply. However, by then the situation became quite critical as the crowds of people screamed and surged in a crush of bodies which pushed Stella off balance until she’d find herself thrown to the ground while the camp’s inhabitants took to attacking the Judge himself! Several strong hands would seek hold of you as her newly recruited supporters called for you to stand down, to leave their chosen candidate alone while the reporters, handlers and security detail all vied for some kind of handle or control of the situation. Meanwhile, as Stella was jostled and at one point kicked by the crowd of bodies, she’d feel a hand reach down to take hold of her and help her up before the distinct blast of a firearm erupted over the commotion of the riot now breaking out. Behind her a member of her security detail was brought down by the bullet which sent some scrambling while others in her entourage moved to surround and protect her…from the unknown shooter but also from you!- .x. Stella | Haden .Candid: Of course she would need protection from him... obviously. Fuck. He really was going to put her ass in an iso-cube if he could get back to her. He felt the arms hit him, the hands grab at him, and he knew that he was on his own, the other judges handling the rest of the jostling, screaming, rioting crowd. He planted his feet hard as the people tried to drag him away, he was a big boy, and the starving, dying few couldn't control him if he didn't want to be controled. He looked damn determined as he reached for the first assilant his arm dragging along his body because of the other hands on him until he broke free of it. He was well trained in martial arts and quickly with a few elbows and fists, took the three men down, "Assault... 3 months in an iso-cube," He warned them, though this wasn't a typical situation, this wasn't something that they would be able to control or handle, not a block where they could lock down the whole place and force people to remain indoors. Better to evacuate the place and let the people in the camps sort it all out, don't you think? "You are a fucking idiot," He growled as he advanced on the woman again, fighting off anyone who might try to get at him. "Get out of here!" He yelled at her and her special people crowd, "Unless you want to wind up dead too?!" He was actually trying to help her now, she was a high profile target, and she'd just made enemies of several hundred people within the camp by calling for their deportation. 11/15/16 12:21) . Pulvis et Umbra Sumu: -In the ensuing chaos Stella had not technically heard the sentence brought down by the Judge and if anyone in her entourage was questioned they’d likewise claim to have heard nothing from the Judge beyond the warning which corroborating witnesses would state on record Stella had complied with. However, as she was helped up and away she’d brush herself off and order some of the men in her detail to help re-establish order since perhaps she realized the magnitude of what had happened here although more importantly she was sending them to fetch the reporters. It was then she’d briefly make eye contact with the Judge fresh off contending with the attack on him ordering her to get out of the camp. Lifting her chin in what appeared to be an expression of momentary defiance Stella was in fact taking in his features, what little she could see beneath that helmet, before glancing to the badge emblazoned with his name, committing it to memory. Before she could form any kind of answer which might have been useless anyways given the commotion around them Stella would feel a hand on her shoulder and then waist, pulling and then tugging and soon pushing her forcibly out of the way as another shot rang out. Behind them a tide of people threatening to crush you and the other Judges left to contend with the chaos which Stella of course deeply regretted. In fact, she was also frightened now of what the fall out would mean for her but it was only a brief flash of fear that immediately faded soon after it registered. She was a woman out for herself and she’d make sure in future to guard herself much better. It wasn’t long after being herded forward and away that she and her entourage would disappear, replaced by starving masses clamouring for a parcel that had landed only a few feet from you. Stella | Haden .Candid: Brig would have no issue remembering the woman as he growled at the crazed masses attacking each other and the judges that were trying to keep order. "We're not finished Miss Haden," he muttered under his breath as his attention turned from the woman and back to the people. He lifted the box of 'aid' upwards when he saw it and threw it toward another judge. "Get it out of here!" He cried out to them, though, of course, that shifted the main focus of the crowd onto that judge and so on and so forth, you get the idea, if the package moved, the mob seemed to move as well. He really was going to wring that woman's scrawny neck. Maybe 1 year wasn't long enough for her to learn her lesson, he was going to have to consider her sentence much more before actually going to arrest her. Then again, she had so many different charges he could use against her... who needed a mayor? What they needed was order and peace! A mayor couldn't give that sort of thing to them... but the Judges could! He snarled and used his daystick on a man rushing him, knocking the guy back and off his feet, though with that, several more people rose to take their place. He drew his weapon then, his Lawgiver, and called out to it, "Rubber Ricochet!" He pointed the weapon at one of his advancing enemies and fired, the rubber round knocking the man off his feet but doing no permanent damage before he swung around and fired once more on someone trying to come up behind him. She had wanted to tap into the people’s discontent not add to it, though Stella could not help but feel the impact of wielding that kind of power and influence with recognizing she had done this. She had incited people to the point some of them rose up against the Judges themselves which had wide sweeping ramifications but for the moment she could not revel in this new found power. Her campaign advisors and managers were quick to usher her into the limousine and soon after the door was closed behind her it lurched forward to accelerate from the scene of the crime. Only as they put distance between themselves and the camp did Stella become aware that she was bleeding from her temple where a wayward kick from one of the camp’s riled inhabitants had struck her. Cringing as she touched the tender spot of her fresh injury she glanced out the tinted windows to the camp fading into the distance which showed plumes of dark smoke rising up out of it aware of how it looked, and how it might reflect back on the campaign and even herself personally.- “I don’t think that’s the last I’ve seen of that Judge.”-She said more to herself than anything but hearing her in that moment Stella’s manager, Edith Holt, would promptly assure Stella that they had ways of spinning this. She had already been in contact with Stella’s father and arrangements were being made as they speak to pin this all on a fall guy. Sure, times have changed, the world has evolved but campaign strategies and political fall out had not it seemed.- (11/15/16 01:27) A player in the room is currently... [ In Storyteller Mode ] says to .x. Pulvis et Umbra Sumu: The efforts of the Judges would eventually calm the masses that retreated and took cover from the spray of rubber bullets but also the hovercraft deployed from the Hall of Justice upon reports of the riot. As back up arrived and people remembered their senses the area would clear leaving only those apprehended by those Judges able to act in the chaos ready for transport to the Iso-Cubes. The dead laid out in the area including the security guard from the campaign detail would require a meat wagon but what of the lone gun man? And the family you kept as your informants? |
