The World As It Is

Let's make a deal.
They say that in every myth and legend, there is a grain of truth. Some fact that really came to pass or be, that gave birth to the wild imaginations of the past. But what if it were more than just some simple fact?

Magic was once a concept so entwined with our world, that it's whims shaped our very existence--But somewhere along the way, technology, belief, we factored out what made the world magical, and in doing so shut away what was once part of our world. As the age of myth and legend gave way to the age of man and machine, magic faded as belief in it faded, until nothing was left but the world we know today. Our normal, mundane existence.

That was, until October of 2013, when all of that changed.

It wasn't some big spectacle, it wasn't some fireworks show in the sky and a tickertape parade. No, the return of magic started with something quiet. A sighting, captured on blurry photograph and debated by tabloid and blogger alike, of a dragon in flight over Wales. Surely, it was a hoax, a trick, a photoshop user trying to pull one over on the world at large again. Until the next week, it landed right on Big Ben, and let out a roar that could nearly be heard on the other side of the English Channel.

There was no denying it now. Things that had tried to remain hidden, and under the radar since the return of magic were coming out of the woodwork, as people realized that they weren't costumes. Elves really did exist again, and faeries, and all other sorts of creatures. They did amazing things with spells and power, terrifying things. Humanity never could greet fondly that which it couldn't understand, and tensions, military actions, and all other manner of chaos began to ensue as lines were drawn in the sand.

Mankind began to develop a very us vs. them mentality, until the next thing they realized came to pass. That this wasn't entirely outside looking in--These beings came from another world, parallel to our own, where magic never died, sure. Where everything magical had faded to, Avalon, but not everything among them had indeed originated from there. There were common people, humans, Tim from down the street that suddenly became an elf. An orc. A dragon. Long dormant bloodlines that had been sealed away by magic's absence resurged, and with it, our own bodies altered to accept it even if our minds did not.

Suddenly we had our own families of mages, that had hidden their secret from the world for millenia. And we also had something new entirely--Magic's forceful re-entry into a world it no longer belonged to began to twist and shape our very bodies, until what were thought redundant lines of genetics brought themselves to the surface. People, not just children, but those of all ages found themselves with extraordinary and supernatural abilities--Things they shouldn't possibly have possessed. But things they did, and as panic from that began to spread too, it felt like humanity was besieged on all sides.

Politicians bickered on what should be done. Activists formed their picket lines, for, against, other. Brother argued against brother in heated debate until the world at large was at a loss about how to feel, exactly. Societies went in both directions, welcoming in some places, fearing, warring in others. Martial law was right alongside citizenship programs.

That was, until someone did something no one expected. They offered asylum. Nikolas Lamont, CEO of LaMerle Holdings LLC, bought a small island that used to be nothing more than a bird observatory from the Manx Government, just off of the Isle of Man. The purchase, though excessive in price and spontaneity within the business world, went largely under the global radar early on in the whole magic debacle. Over the time since, he constructed a home for the new world, in the form of twin companies, side by side.

First, was Mercurial International, a business firm who's sole discretion would be to match people with new and unique talents to work best suited for them, like a temporary worker agency for people who could move thousands of pounds of metal with nothing but their minds. The goal was integration of these new people into society, and helping them find gainful employment in a world that was quickly turning against them.

The second, was Mercurial Academy, a ground of learning and growth for new people. Both to help acquaint those long since gone from this world with the new day and age, as well as to help foster the next generation in a safer environment, where concerns of alienated rights and bigotry for what they now were, would be a thing kept at much of a distance. A school for the newly gifted.

The government of the Isle of Man, where the facilities were now located just offshore of, was divided the same as everyone else over the concept of having these...things...on their doorstep. However, it doesn't take long for politicians to catch the scent of money, and with the tourism from visitors to the Academy, as well as the significant investments Lamont was making in the area--Well, while the citizens may still have had their doubts, the politicians laid theirs to rest.

And so, one year later, the Academy began to open it's doors and accepting applicants. Some, were those interested...some were specifically offered with a timely letter as their personal lives began to get out of hand, but the concept of being able to find work, while gaining a grasp of what new things one could do in a controlled environment? Well, it certainly had it's appeal. And lack of people with torches and pitchforks.

Welcome to the new world of Mercurial Academy. Please, enjoy your stay.
