Let's make a deal.
|
The library was honestly pretty impressive. There were the two floors, a loft set up that allowed the upper floor to not only hang over the lower, but to see down and up so that you could spot the section you wanted. Then there was the extensive collection, a large mass of books on topics A to Z and everything inbetween, some not even published anywhere, like collected old journals or books with strange, illegible languages. To top it all off, the staff was not only helpful, but friendly. They...they didn't seem to dislike the presence of the white haired male, as he wandered the aisle-ways of the second floor, looking for...Well, he wasn't quite sure what he was looking for. Everything was so new to him. You could maybe pick out the slightest exuberant smile on the boy's sharp features...Handsome to some, clearly come into his own, but still not out of his teens. Still, the white t-shirt that made up half of his clothing clung to his form, showing that he certainly had been physically fit before coming to the academy, though the tone of his muscle made it pretty clear it wasn't likely a sport that kept him active. And it wasn't just curiosity that shined behind those green eyes as they looked along the listings of each ornate mahogany bookcase, taking note of each book in turn. What he wouldn't give for the time to read them all... Sighing with a soft smile, he reached the end of one of the pathways on the upper floors, and paused to lean against the railing on the edge. Library membership was free, with admission to the academy, which meant...Well, as long as he balanced his schoolwork and extracirricular activities, he could spend as much time in here as he wanted. Irvine couldn't help but grin a bit at the thought, stretching his arms up over his head almost exhaustedly. It was barely even midday and it felt like he'd been here for hours on end already, just looking aroun---Clink. One of the bolts of the railing hadn't quite been fastened in all the way it should, and with a slip of the rail, there went the white haired boy, tumbling backwards over it and down to the floor below. "C-Craaaap!" As if to balance his poor luck with better, reflex helped him turn in the air to land on his back, flatly with a loud groan and a thud, but little in the way of clear damage, though he seemed to have the wind knocked out of him, head laying to the side. Nng...that stung like a bastard, and the metal giving way, if the whole, y'know, yell of surprise and loud crashing hadn't drawn someone's attention, he'd probably be there for a good bit just trying to collect himself. Eyes opened hazily, his vision a little blurred but...Well, he was conscious at least. |

She had been there for... What was it? A month? Perhaps. Aystrid had a little trouble recalling time in the academy. It was peaceful and felt more like a home to her than the other homes she had. Four in all by the time she was twelve, another two before the academy, and she was only seventeen by then. A freak of nature, to most. To the people that didn't like the academy and its ilk. All because she could force others to feel what they didn't want to. A curse, she sometimes let herself believe. A blessing, on other days. She traipsed the aisles of the library in search of a specific set of books. See, she wanted to open a club in the future, once she had the money to finance it. It had always been a sort of dream of hers to own an establishment in which people could have fun and relax. To not worry about the world for a while. Of course, it would require a few things to really make it pop! Buuut, Aystrid could wait. She smiled, as she reached for a book. Business. That's what she was after. What better way to learn about business than to read on the topic? Perfect. The brunette made her way to a small coffee table and chair not too far from where she got the book and sat in the tight black jeans she wore, the dark green t-shirt hugged her form nicely as she crossed her legs and opened the cover. It was going to be a good book. Or at least... It was going to be. There was the unmistakable sound of clanking metal, and then the yell of a fellow who went sailing to the ground not too far in front of her. She blinked her hetero chromatic eyes in a sort of shock. The book was left on the table and Aystrid moved next to the white haired klutz and shook his shoulder lightly. "Hey. Hey are you okay?" |

"Uuunh...someone get the number a' that...angel...think the bird pushed me..." He muttered to himself as he was shaken. Clearly, the fog upstairs hadn't quite cleared yet, but by the time as he rolled his head back over to look at her? Well, he blinked a few times, and coughed as he tried to sit up with a groan, before falling back for a bit, cradling his head. Yup. He'd need a few minutes. "Sure...Sure, just...whew. When they said they rushed construction on the place...they weren't joking, were they?" He tried to give a soft smile, squinting a little at the burning sensation as he sat back up again, pulling his legs up to rest on his knees. "Sorry about that, guess I should have been more careful, huh?" He mused a little, trying to get a look at who exactly came to his aid. Seems he'd escaped the notice of the library staff, sure, but if he'd really been in trouble? Well, no doubt someone would have noticed. Lucky for him that someone was a fairly cute girl, which made him blink a little more at realizing, glancing away. "Didn't mean to worry anybody. No bleeding, maybe a bruise and a concussion, should be fine if I don't go to sleep anytime soon." He gave a bit of a weary smile at that idea, but it did mean trying to read was probably going out the window today. Well, for the time being anyway...the headache coming on would definitely see to that...and he rubbed the back of his head a bit absently as he glanced back over at her. "Er...uh, thank you, though." |

"Well, actually. There's been studies recently that say you should sleep if you've suffered a blow to the head. I think it's so that if there's any sort of swelling it can go down easily without having to worry about a tired body, too." She smiled slightly, and adjusted herself to sit with her legs crossed as she watched him. She couldn't help but chuckle a little. "I think the bird is busy today. Gryphon, I think its name is." True enough the griffin often could be found in the library, that day she was needed elsewhere. As was the drow woman. She was a bit of a weirdo according to Aystrid. Too calm. Too... quiet. Blank. Almost like Aystrid in a sense. After a moment she stood, and wrestled a bit to get the man back onto his feet so that she could get him a seat where she was. "Just sit for a moment. Do you want a drink? I can go get you a glass of water. Um. I'm Aystrid, too. Suppose it would help if you knew the name of the person that was helping you recover from an almost broken back." |

"Maybe...but there's still that whole, pesky, coma thing to worry about. I know it's not the most common thing to happen, but...Well." He tilted his head a little at her next comment...but, well, griffins aside, he rose to his feet when she helped him. Couldn't exactly keep a lady waiting, now could he? That wouldn't be proper, no matter the situation...And groaning a little he shook out some of the kinks in his arms, trying to take a deep breath. Oh, hey, the lungs were cooperating now. "Irvine. Irvine Cer--...Er, just Irvine. Water might be nice, but really, you don't have to..." Cracking his neck, he winced from the soreness of the pain as he made his way over to the table, leaning on it. Well, starting to, as soon as he found himself doing it he immediately stopped, taking his hand off as if concerned it might collapse too...But that was just silly, so, eventually he settled into the chair and leaned his head back. "I have the worst luck sometimes...but hey, small price to pay for higher learning." He muttered almost sarcastically as he leaned forward, spotting her book with a curious quirk of his eyebrow, reading the title off to himself out loud, "...here for business classes? I didn't know they offered those." |

She disappeared for a moment around a bookcase. She was gone for perhaps two minutes while she fetched a glass of water for Irvine. When she returned, quietly, she rested the glass on the coffee table and gave a brief nod. "The Academy doesn't offer business classes, though the library has every book you could imagine. It won't be very hard to self teach the fundamentals of running a business. Most of it is just trial and error, I hear." Another brief smile before she sat in the opposite, empty chair. Her hands held themselves and she watched him contemplatively. "Are you in pain?" |

"Could be worse. Definitely been worse." He murmured in response, leaning back in the chair as he rubbed his head absently. Maybe he hadn't even noticed he'd been holding it the whole time, but, well, didn't look like there was much in the way of visible bruising. And aside from unfocused initially, those sharp green eyes of didn't seem glossed over at all. Not really in the slightest as they hazarded a glance at her own dual colored ones. That was...curious. Rare genetics, sure, he'd read about it happening, but... "Er...right. Thank you for the water." He nodded, solemnly, that hint of a british accent on his voice as he took the water and downed a bit, mostly out of recognition of her bringing it to him. It was polite. But all in all, he really didn't feel all...there at the moment. Distracted, might have been a good word. Just fallen from a higher story was too much of a mouthful of a phrase. Carefully, he sat the glass back down, giving her a warm little smile. All that aside? He seemed like a generally pleasant guy. Good mood, if nothing else. "I suppose it would be, but with some pretty high stakes for the error part, I wager. Not the easiest thing by far...Not to...dissuade you from making a career of it. Have you always wanted to?" Curious, he finally pried into Aystrid a little bit, watching her carefully over his glass to make sure he wasn't going too far as he took another sip of water. |

She tilted her head momentarily. The smile seemed a little less genuine that time. It was difficult to project something unfelt. But he seemed to be of good spirits. That was good. "That's the only way to do it, I think. High risk, high turnaround." She paused for a moment. "It was something to consider when I arrived. I've always wanted to own a business. Little, big, it doesn't matter." Another awkwardly vacant smile. It was too calm in this area. Maybe that was what Aystrid liked about it. Books and no one to rub off negatively on her. "What brings you Mercurial?" Prod for prod. |

Well, maybe not entirely lacking in negativity. She asked her question, and it didn't necessarily take an empath to notice he seemed to shift away, glancing to the side as the smile left his features. What brought him to the school? A lot of things. A lot of things that really weren't worth...sharing with just every passer by, no offense meant to the kindly if detatched brunette. There was a long moment of silence as his eyes seemed to study the table...or maybe he was just looking for the right words to use. Finally, he glanced back with a bit of a disingenuous smile of his own, sighing softly, "Had to get away from the family. Study in a new location...The tuition option worked pretty well for me. Full ride, if you turn around and work at their whole Job Corp deal? So...education, and a job with free room and board the whole way. Couldn't really turn that down, you know?" Irvine had a bit of a knack for little white lies that weren't exactly lies...Just...creatively cutting things out, or leaving them aside. "Right back at you, though. I mean...I think we all know the Academy isn't just for general admission..." He cast another glance aside for a moment, before those green eyes flickered back to hers with a bit of a trusting warmth behind them. "I come from a family of mages." |

Another little smile. "Mages, mm? That's not too terrible a thing to be." Calm, she was. Too calm. Too blank. Maybe she needed to borrow a feeling once or twice, but she was trying to get good at pretending they were hers. Better a mage than someone that didn't know how to feel happiness without some help. "You'll find a lot of useful books here for that, I think. You could ask Miss Arabana, or maybe Gryphon." Helpful at least, she was. She rubbed her knees lightly and stood up, crossing her arms and watched Irvine again for a moment. "It may be best if you go see the nurse, I think." |

"Nah, I'll be fine...Just a little tussle. Nothing broken, nothing gained." She was pretty persistent...but then again, in her position, Irvine couldn't say he wouldn't be just as worried. It was a little...strange, to have that kind of concern shown for him, but he really, really didn't like the idea of being a bother. If she wanted rid of him? That was one thing. But just a little headache? C'mon, it's not like he was bleedin--...The male sighed as he looked at his hand, after rubbing the back of his head again. Sure, it was faint and smeared, but... "You win." He muttered, climbing to his feet with a bit of a stumble as he caught himself on the table. Downsides of standing up too fast, maybe? The world was a little...spinny...for a moment, and he took a deep breath to try and steady himself before trying to give her a bit of a sarcastic smile, "Sorry to drop in on your reading like that, unannounced and all sorts. Er...d'you...remember which way it is to medical? I try to patch myself up for the most part..." Of course, there was the option of doing so again now, but you know what? She probably wasn't going to go for that. So if she just pointed him in the right direction, the apparently klutz of a boy would have headed off to his dorm anyway to fix himself up proper. Maybe. Depended on what luck had to say in the matter, but balance was being such a fickle thing at the moment. He kinda...didn't seem able to take his hand off the table, just yet. |

She didn't buy into it. Not at all. A look like she was unimpressed, or bewildered, and her hand landed on his arm to help him keep steady as he stood after a little persistence. She felt it then. Not overwhelming pain, but discomfort. That wasn't pleasant at all. That wouldn't do, would it. "With your permission..." She didn't give him much time to object before the sensation of pain and disorientation left him. He wouldn't feel that any more, and instead, he would feel the calmness of the room. The way it simply waited for adventure, or action. For something. Patient. She smiled then, more genuinely, and started walking with him. "The nurse's station is in the next building, I think. I'm still a bit new here; it can be a little overwhelming." |

"With my permiss--...ion...?" That was sort of the thing, his questioning stare. After all, he kinda asked what she was, and...well, after the blood, her response? His...body felt strange. The pain seemed to ebb away like he'd just taken some really nice painkillers, and his fogged head...well, he couldn't tell if it felt more or less clear. He did know something didn't seem right, but he just...watched her carefully for a moment, mind trying to process what just happened. Spell? He didn't feel like there'd been one, really...what about a power, like those metahumans? That was a possibility, or she could have been of another race entirely, something he couldn't comprehend the style of just yet. "Yeah...a little overwhelming but it's...er, it's doable when you get used to it. We're in...right, the rec complex, which means..." He seemed a bit distracted, but glanced over to the side like he was looking through the walls themselves, reaffirming which direction was north. A little quirk some people did, and Irvine wasn't much different in that regard. When he got his bearings? He looked off in the direction he thought it was in...and pushed off the table onto his feet. "Right...I think it's this way, you don't have to come with me." He smiled a bit, taking a deep breath as he tried to keep his balance, heading for the door. At least it wasn't that bad of a day outside, though the sun was going to feel... ...interesting, with the wound as it was. |

Aystrid gave a gentle nod, and walked next to the man. She didn't feel right about just letting him go on his own like that, even if the nurse wasn't that far. It was probably good to know where the nurse was, anyway, wasn't it? "I hope you don't mind the.. Well." She paused in her speech for a moment. How would she explain it? She hummed. "The relief, I mean. You seemed uncomfortable, so I fixed it." That would do... Right? That was a pretty simple way to say it, she figured. |

"Not to sound unappreciative..." He trailed off, biting his lip a little as they fell into stride. The midday sun almost felt good, if it wasn't a little odd on the warm blood. The wound wasn't...bad, no, probably just a light break of the skin, but he still felt a little lightheaded, as was probably expected. Of course, all she could see was him seem to search for the right words, before he finally continued a handful of steps later. "...but...what did you...do exactly?" He spoke, casting a glance over at her as he seemed to stumble a little, keeping his balance. Maybe a slower pace would be better...and the mage slowed his gait a little, hoping she'd not mind. It was a short walk from one building to the next...by the time they finished that conversation they'd probably already be inside the arches, but... "It's just...I don't think I've ever seen a spell like that...Not that I've seen many spells just yet, but...the theory, you know?" He seemed a little lost, trying to make sense of it. |

Her pace slowed to meet his. It was different when she was the healthy one. Or at least, not the most broken of the lot. She smiled, unsure what else to do in the circumstance. "All I did was take away your discomfort and pain." She nodded. The nurse wasn't too far, no, but the sun was hotter than she realized and that probably wasn't good for Irvine's injuries. Now that she thought about it, she wasn't sure what would be -good- for them, apart from maybe some ice... She wasn't the nursey type. "I have an ability to manipulate certain things. Emotions, and the receptors that dictate pleasure or pain. Kind of like Empathy, I guess, but in the reverse. I can make others feel just as I can feel what others feel." Though it was probably sad, she couldn't feel for herself. Should that be a sad thing? People seem so conflicted all the time because they felt, maybe it was better that she couldn't? |

The male seemed quiet for a moment, as if trying to process exactly what he was hearing, before trying to give her another smile. Well, it wasn't really a try, it was genuine, even if mostly because of how relaxed she'd made him feel. It was hard to be anything but, honestly, not that he entirely minded avoiding that...bit of...Panic, at having one's emotions hijacked. That was...peculiar, to say the least, but something that could be adjusted to, right? Not like he'd hold it against her. "I see...that's definitely an interesting ability. And that makes you a metahuman, which there's nothing wrong with that...just...I was curious." Way to just shove that foot in your mouth, Irv. Bet you could taste the leather sole, and the dirt. The white haired male shook his head, as if pushing the thoughts away as they finally came upon the building. He paused for a moment, fumbling with the door, before holding it open for her, motioning for her to go ahead of him with a small wave. "Just...promise me something..." He seemed to wait again, choosing his words up until the door finally closed behind them. The building wasn't busy, not at this hour, but there were a few idle students checking up on this or that. Training accidents, physicals. A mixed bag of emotion, certainly, which he was curious if would bother her...but...sidetracking. "...in the future, could you wait for my permission, Aystrid? It's...a little bit unnerving, what someone can do without you knowing. I don't mind you, but...I'd just like that peace of mind." He spoke, softly, following along behind her, until he took the lead again. Just a few hallways... |

Aystrid paused for a moment once they were inside. She needed to adjust. The mishmash of emotional states was somewhat bothersome, particularly when she was opening herself up to feel somewhat normal. Now she just felt exhausted. She sighed quietly, and gave a nod. "Next time, I will. I just didn't like the idea of someone being in pain. Though, I think that seems a bit counterproductive since... Well. We're here." Maybe that time the embarrassed chuckle was genuine. Maybe this place could help her. The pair walked, down the halls and turned until they were met with a white room with cream coloured accents. A sign just next to the door in multiple languages, but the universal sign, a red cross, was present to indicate that this room was the Nurse's Station. Aystrid gave a gentle knock, and it wasn't long at all before a rather bubbly red haired girl answered the door with a genuine smile. She wore a nurse's dress, the familiar white and red uniform most people could recognize with the universal cross across her chest. She tilted her head a little this way and that, and chuckled. "I'm Nurse Aly! Did someone bump their head?" Aystrid was confused. "How did you...?" This Academy is monitored twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, three-hundred and sixty-five days of the year by an Autonomous Resource Key - A.R.K. The voice seemed female, here at least. There was no telling what it was, until a little blue and black imp type creature appeared with a buzz, a flicker, and a correction of coloration to indicate it was a hologram. "Yes, yes. This is our Artificial Intelligence program. It's named Ark, though the acronym is fairly evident now that's it's been explained! Long story short, I can tell when there's been an injury and where, and the degree of its severity. I would have rushed over super fast if Irvine didn't get back up! She giggled. |

"It's fine, Aystrid...I just wanted to set a boundary." The male smiled a bit, at her embaressment...Honestly? It was good to see her...well, acting with some feeling. It took away some of the worry that she couldn't, since she seemed, well...Pleasant at best. And pretty much just. When they finally arrived at the room, though? He breathed out a bit of a sigh of relief. It was a nurse. Not...y'know...At any rate, he felt he could trust anyone the school happened to hire, right? They had to vet them, right? Right. So he let out whatever breath he'd been holding in, anxiously, and caught eyes with the redhead. Briefly, very briefly, followed by glancing to the side a little. She was...well, kinda cute, and that uniform was certainly dated, wasn't it...The other boys probably didn't complain. He wasn't going to say anything, but he coughed a bit as he responded, "Um...yes, just a little injury. It's...well, bleeding a bit so it can't hurt to get checked out." Now who was the awkward one? The swordsman shifted his weight a little, rubbing the back of his head absently, until the pain of doing so caught up with him and he stopped with a start. Guess habits were hard to break, huh? Wincing a little he tried to feign a smile as they waited in the hallway. The AI? Actually didn't plus him, glancing to Aystrid with a brief if light chuckle, "They built this place fast, but...didn't really spare any expense. Makes you kinda wonder why Mr. Lamont was willing to throw around that much money...Not...that I'm complaining." He added...more or less not about to force his way in to the nurse's office, sure, but he wasn't wanting to hang around in the hallway getting blood in his white hair all day either. It showed terribly well. |

"This place is pretty fancy, isn't it. I mean. I haven't really seen half of what I've seen outside of it. I wonder if it's maybe some kind of magick." She shuffled a little uncomfortably in her seat. Honestly she was more worried about the fact that they were being monitored all the time. She supposed that was a safety measure. Couldn't have psychos running around blowing stuff up, right? Right... Aly came out with a smile. "You can come in now, students. I'll have you patched up in two shakes of a lamb's tail! Ark, would you kindly go inform President Lamont that there's construction needed in the library?" The little blue and black imp gave a quiet little nod and jumped into the air, poofing in a digital haze. "Sit here, Ivrine. And please show me where your injury is, and I can have it fixed. Oh. Should probably take your shirt off too so we can get that sent to get cleaned~" |
