Hey! So, I've been thinking about this a lot and I decided to ask the mods (and other people) what your thoughts are on this: There are A LOT of inactive fics here, most author's who've written them haven't been seen here for a long time. I've read quite a few that I'd like to see finished, but can't because they haven't been updated in ages. My suggestion would be to allow some members to adopt some fics (after trying to contact its original author of course) and continue them respecting what's been written so far and even the former author's writing style. If, for any reason, the author returns and decides he/she wants their story back, they have every right to. This is not stealing someone else's work... it's just that I feel that there are so many fics with so much potential that are just standing there (some haven't even made to two or three chapters).... Again, it's just a suggestion, and I understand that the mods may feel reluctant to agree to this, but as I've stated before, if anyone should adopt one story they have to at least contact its author to ask for permission.... if the author doesn't reply in, let's say, a week, that story gets to be adopted. Thanks in advance! |

I would say ONLY if the original author actually responds and gives permission. I have a fic on here I haven't looked at in years, and quite frankly often don't realize when I have a PM on here. But its a fic I'd like to finish, when other ideas are done. I have a clear vision of how I want the story to go and I'd be pretty pissed if someone took it over without my exact permission. |

I love this idea. I agree on explicit permission from an author has to be obtained. Try PM first. If an author doesn't respond, then don't adopt the fic. I also suggest if there's fics authors wouldn't mind having others finish, then either the author makes a note before their fic saying "if there's no updates for over [insert length of time here], please feel free to adopt this fic and finish it for me," or the note can be made after the fic has all ready been posted and had a few updates here and there, but doesn't feel like continuing. |

Yes, you have a point! In your case, people would eventually find a way to reach out and ask for permission. The problem begins when some authors haven't been online for years :/ Thanks, Isis! Yes, I now see that it's best to wait for permission, and if the author doesn't answer the story doesn't get adopted. It's better to leave it be than to rush things and adopt it without the owner's consent! I liked your suggestion! It would be a nice thing to have! Edited by treadlightly, October 30, 2015, 2:15 pm.

Agree with all, try to get in touch the author, send her a PM, an email if there is one, and, more important, post that request on her fic, and if she agrees public to it (so we, the staff, know) feel free to go on. ;) Good luck! |

Sounds good to me. However, I wouldn't be so strict as to say that you couldn't adopt a story if the author doesn't respond. What I would suggest is that you'd make a new thread, for example, "My take on how False Truth (or whatever) would continue". If the author did come back, the adopted fic could then be taken down. Certainly, there can be issues with this (original characters, their copyright, people just not wanting others to continue their stories etc.) |

Perhaps adopted fics could have their own subsection? |

That's definitely a way to go! Anyway, maybe it'd be faster if we could contact the author via their personal e-mail, but since only mods can access that, people that are interested in adopting a story should ask a mod to contact the author and ask if it's okay that that person talks to them through email. Just a suggestion. I think it'd be easier than to send a PM here because some authors haven't logged in in ages.... @HellHathNoFury that's a good option! |

I am so wildly against this whole idea, unless you specifically get permission from the author. And it isn't the job of the author to "check in" or anything - people move on, or forget passwords or logins, or just don't feel inspired to finish. That doesn't mean they want to hand over their original (or semi-original - there is plenty of overlap since the main subject is Metallica!) ideas. Obviously the mods will do whatever they see as appropriate, but I don't think anyone's story should be "adopted" without their express permission. |

And currently most of the people that have responded share your view. If anything were to happen with this now, I'd say that's how it would go - you'd need public permission from the author before you could adopt a story. I can set up a subforum when I get online on my computer.

Personally, I would not adopt ANY story without the author's consent. As I've stated before, it was an idea that came to my mind to give some stories we love the chance to be finished. I never meant to 'steal' or imply that was what I wanted people to think/do :/ And I know people don't have to obligatory finish a story. Life happens... authors may leave stories unfinished for various reasons, I understand that and agree with you, Metalicious. However, if someone really wishes to see a certain plot in a certain story be developed 'till the end and if the original author consents, then it's no problem. It's never a guarantee that even people who adopt a certain story will finish it. It's more like giving them a second chance

You may have noticed already - I opened a subforum for the adoptions. |
