Don't Tread On Me

For some years, I've been writing my own music. The process of composing is always very hard for me. I think that is because I'm perfectionistic and have my thoughts of "it has to be right at first try". However I am aware of this and try to ignore such thoughts. Because of all this, I'm only producing 2 songs a year on average (I've composed 2 songs in 2009 and 2 in 2010). I usually am able to come up with some cool riffs and I'll be like "yeah, this is cool for a main riff or a verse riff". Eventually I come up with some other riff and it fits with another and that's when I can come up with pretty much the first half of a song. But that's always where I get stuck: Somewhere before where a mid section is supposed to start. Any ideas how to approach this problem of composing music? |

The thing is, composing on your own is a very difficult thing, because you miss ideas and different views from other people. It's really hard, but I'd suggest you find a band. I know that's not easy, because I've been trying to find one for 3 years or something myself, but I never find people who want to play the same music. Advise for composing on your own...well...I don't compose music, but I do compose stories. So, when I get stuck writing, I guess I just quit for a while and clear my head. I sometimes go out into the street for inspiration or I watch a movie or a series that can inspire me. If you think too hard about what to do next with your song (in my case, story) it'll never come together. I guess you need to let go and try again. If that doesn't help, I don't know any other advise.... Good luck. |

Thanks Anne for your post. Yeah I've heard the 'taking some time off' before. But the thing is, I'm really not so active when it comes to composing. So the taking some time off, is actually not the problem I think. I go weeks or sometimes months without attempts to compose anything. So you'd say there would be plenty of time away from it. And yeah I've thought about the band thing. But I'm very protective of what I do. I don't want others to come in and try to change my stuff to something I don't want it to be. But it would be cool if I'd meet someone who has the same vision and that we'd be a 'James and Lars' type of thing. Especially someone who would be very talented in composing would be awesome. |
