Oh, no, it's okay. Hakuna matata. I totally understand the school thing, because I haven't really been able to write because of dumb college. |

Here you are. Sorry to keep you waiting. - - - James' POV "James, let's go! We go on in like, ten minutes!" Jason called, poking his head into the dressing room we all shared. I waved him off and brought the phone in my hand to my ear. As it rang, I paced around the couch. I wasn't even wearing pants. I was in no shape to play tonight. I hadn't slept the night before because Ashlynn wasn't answering the house phone. Maybe it was just me being paranoid or maybe something was really wrong. The baby was a week late and Ashlynn, she said, showed no signs of giving birth any time soon. God, what if she was in labor right now? I would never forgive myself. "Hello?" Someone said from the other line. I straightened up and let out a deep breath. It was Ashlynn. "Where have you been?" I pulled my hand through my hair and Ashlynn laughed through the phone. "Fuck, you scared me!" "James, please stop worrying. I said I would call you if something happened. Nothing's happened!" She let out an exasperated sigh. "But...but I was worried." "Did I not just tell you to stop worrying?" I huffed and plopped onto the couch. "I can't help it. I'm across the fucking country and whenever I'm not talking to you, I think something's wrong. Sorry if I'm concerned." Just then, Lars walked into the room. At the sight of me lounging on the couch, on the phone, and in my underwear, his eyes widened. "What the fock? Get up! Get up! We have a focking show to play in ten minutes!" "Is that Lars? Why's he yelling?" Ashlynn inquired. There was a smile in her voice. I cupped my hand over my mouth and the phone to block out Lars' yelling. "We go on in like, ten minutes and I'm sitting here in my underwear, on the phone with you." Lars continued to yell in the background as Ashlynn spoke. "James! Get off the phone!" She was reprimanding me, but she was also laughing. I smiled. "Call me if anything happens. Please." "I will, I swear. Tell Lars that Laura says hi." I laughed. "I will." When I hung up the phone, Lars hurled a pair of jeans at me. He was still yelling incoherently and I laughed again as I pulled them on. - - - Ashlynn's POV When I hung up with James, I waddled over to the couch, where Laura was sitting. "Let's go for a walk." "A walk?" Laura straightened up and blinked. "Why?" "You're a doctor now, Laura. You should know this. I want to walk the baby out." Laura was finishing up her residency at UCSF and she was offered a spot in their neurology department, but despite all of this, she was so clueless most of the time. I guess it was a blonde thing. "Oh, yeah. Um, let's go then." She smiled and rose from the couch, then we left the house on what I imagined would be a long trek. - - - Two hours later and we hadn't gone very far. My obnoxiously swollen feet, large from my pregnancy, kept me at bay. I needed to stop and rest every few minutes. When Laura suggested we stop and get something to eat, I felt like kissing her. "Pizza, yeah!" I ambled forward, knowing that we were just blocks from my favorite pizza parlor. Laura, however, was less enthused. "Again?" "Don't argue with the pregnant woman. I'm hungry and I want pizza." It wasn't my fault I turned into a guy when I was pregnant. I craved only the unhealthiest of foods: pizza, donuts, chips, hoagies, different kinds of meat, chocolate, ice cream, etc. I had my fiance's appetite. "Alright, fine. Pizza it is." Laura heaved a sigh, defeated, and followed behind me. I shuffled up the street with a grin of victory on my face. I was getting pizza. It was a good night. - - - "Half pep, half plain! Two Cokes!" "That's us," Laura said. "I got it." As she left the booth, I did the same. "Sit back down," she told me with a scowl on her face. "Just because I'm huge doesn't mean I'm immobile. I can help." Before she could argue any further, I approached the counter and retrieved our drinks. She slipped the tray of pizza of of the counter, thanking the man. "See?" I put the sodas on the table. "I'm fine." "I know you are. Stop being cocky." I stuck my tongue out at her and just as I was about to slip back into the booth, something trickled down my leg. Fuck. I looked down. "That's fun." Laura looked up from the pizza. "What?" "My water just broke." I shrugged and started for the door and Laura rushed to the cashier, urging him to call a cab. "You know - " Laura joined me on the sidewalk. " - you're very nonchalant about going into labor." I shrugged again. "Better to stay calm than run around like a fucking chicken without a head, right? I'm fine." As the cab the pizza place called rolled to a stop in front of us, Laura snorted, "Yeah, you're fine." - - - Once we arrived at the hospital, I located a phone. My first call went to Kris, asking her to stay with Adrian for the night and bring him to the hospital tomorrow afternoon. I then called Rick, Lars' assistant. I would've called James' assistant, had he had one, but I was technically his assistant. He took care of himself on tour, though. I spoke to about four different people before the phone was handed off to Rick. "Rick, hey, it's Ashlynn. Do me a quick favor and tell James I'm in labor, would you?" "You're what?" "I'm having my baby, Rick." I laughed softly. "But don't tell James until after the show." "But that's not for another hour..." "Rick, please." "Okay, Ashlynn, but I'm pretty sure he's going to kill the messenger..." He sighed. "Good luck and congratulations!" - - - James' POV During Jason's bass solo, I stepped off stage to change my shirt and grab another beer. One of the wardrobe girls, Leslie or Lisa or something, handed me another shirt and slipped the sweaty one from my hands. As I pushed by her, her hand tickled my bare waist. "Hey, Leslie, just because we hooked up last year doesn't mean it'll happen again. Stop touching me." "My name's Lola, asshole, and keep saying that. You didn't complain on the last tour." She gave me a smile and sauntered off. I rolled my eyes and pulled my shirt over my head. I was so done with that shit, cheating and all. I needed to grow up and grow some balls and finally commit to Ashlynn. We had a kid together with another on the way and we lived together, so what was stopping me from marrying her? Fuck if I knew. Maybe I was just being stupid. As I hurried off to grab a beer, I concluded that I would marry Ashlynn when Summer Shit ended. She deserved it and I was tired of seeing that engagement ring alone on her left hand. It needed a wedding band to join in and I needed one to join the myriad of rings on my hands. Yeah, I would marry Ashlynn when I got home. That sounded good. "James!" Rick, Lars' assistant, skidded to a halt in front of me. "Uh, what's up?" "She told me not to tell you until the show was over, but I have to get back to the hotel. Ashlynn went into labor ten minutes ago." He was breathless, clutching his knees as he bent over. "What?! I have to leave! I have to leave now!" I was slipping my guitar strap over my head when Rick stopped me. "No. She said finish the show. She'll kill me if I let you leave. Everyone will kill me." "And I'm going to kill you if you don't let me leave!" I thrashed around in his grip, but he was stronger than I thought. Prick. "Go back out! A car is going to be waiting out back for you and it'll take you to the airport. You'll get on a jet and you'll be there in less than three hours. I booked the fastest one I could find." He whirled me around and pushed me back on stage. "Go!" For the next forty minutes, I played and sang just like I was supposed to, but my mind was elsewhere. I wanted to get home. We surged through "So What?", the last song of the night, and then I stepped to the microphone. The crowd was cheering for another song. "Sorry, guys, but I have to get going. It's been a great fucking show and I'd love to stay, but my fiance just went into labor, so I gotta go. Thanks, fuckers!" I grinned widely at no one in particular and saluted the crowd, then rushed off stage. As I handed my guitar off to someone and changed my shirt again, the guys came up behind me. "You're going home?" Kirk questioned, patting himself down with a white towel. I nodded. "Yeah. I'll be back on the seventh." Another nod. "I just gotta go." "We'll celebrate when you get back," said Jason, clapping me on the back. Lars hugged me quickly and then pushed me toward the exit. "Congratulations, dude!" - - - I slept on the plane back to San Francisco. When I woke up, we had landed on the tarmac and the pilot woke me up, grinning. "We're here, Mr. Hetfield." "Is there a car out there? I need to get to the hospital." I jumped up from my seat and hurried to the front of the jet. The pilot laughed at my anxiety. "Mr. Ulrich's assistant made sure there was. It's right outside." "Thanks so much, man." I hurried down the steps and ambled into the black town car that awaited me. The driver turned to face me and smiled. Why was everyone so fucking smiley today? I just wanted to see Ashlynn. "To UCSF, I assume?" I nodded and sat back, watching the private airstrip leave my sight. - - - "Ashlynn. I'm looking for Ashlynn Murray." I gripped the receptionist's desk, panting loudly. "Are you of relation?" She tilted her head to the side, blinking. "I'm her fiance, yeah. Where is she?" The woman took her time looking through papers and typing some shit into her computer. I groaned loudly after a few minutes, "Could you please hurry up? She's in labor. Please." "Sir, I'm working as fast as I possibly can," she said monotonously, sighing. She slowly poked the keyboard a few more times. I was about to start yelling when someone called my name. I wheeled around and saw Laura approaching me, a coffee in one hand and a bottle of fruit juice in the other. "Laura! Thank God." I waved the woman at the desk off and followed behind Laura as she led me to Ashlynn. "How is she? How long has it been?" "About five hours. She's fine, totally calm. It's like she's a professional pregnant woman. She's taking this so well. I'd be fucking dying." Laura laughed as we approached Ashlynn's room. She handed me the fruit juice to give to Ashlynn and said that she would be back later. For the first time ever, I hugged Laura and thanked her. She backpedaled, dumbfounded that I'd hugged her. Normally, we hated each other, but I guess this moment called for a few hugs. She then waved dumbly and went on her way. When I opened Ashlynn's door, she didn't look away from the television. "You took long enough. I'm thirsty," she said before turning to face me. She thought I was Laura. Her eyes widened at the sight of me. "James! What're you doing here?" Ashlynn sat up in the bed and her hair fell over her shoulder. She was glowing. She looked gorgeous. "I flew in. Just until the seventh." I walked over to the bed and leaned down, kissing her softly. When I pulled away, she was smiling. "I'm here." "Yeah, you are." She was going to kiss me again when she let out a soft cry. I jumped back. "What? What's wrong?" I hurried back to her side and took her hand in mine. She squeezed my hand until it was numb, then let go after a few seconds. "What happened?!" "Contractions, that's all. They're getting closer together." She smiled up at me reassuringly. "Which means?" "She's going to be born soon." |

Second to last part. - - - James' POV I spent the next three hours alone with Ashlynn. Three hours of little conversation. Three hours of the television blaring. Three hours of Ashlynn squeezing the fuck out of my hand. Three hours of me helplessly trying to help her through her contractions. Three hours until the doctor came to check on her. "Hello there," the doctor greeted, tucking Ashlynn's chart under her arm and extending her hand to me. I rose from the chair and took her hand, shaking it slowly. "I assume you're James?" "Mhm, I am. And you're Dr. Alvarez. Nice to meet you." I nodded and sat back down. Ashlynn smiled over at me. I returned her smile before turning to the doctor again. "So, what's up?" "Well, I'm here to see if Ashlynn is ready to start pushing. It's been almost nine hours and I like to check on my patients every three hours or so, so here I am." She smiled politely and began speaking to Ashlynn. "Now, Ashlynn, how are you feeling? Are you comfortable?" "More than, but my contractions are getting pretty close together and they're lasting for a while." "How close are they?" "Less than five minutes." Ashlynn's smiled faltered and her hand flew to mine. Then came the squeezing. I gulped back a gasp of pain as her nails dug into my hand. I could only speculate that my pain was nothing compared to hers, so I didn't say anything. "We'll see how dilated you are, but I'm sure it’s time for this baby to be born." The doctor snapped on some rubber gloves and waited for Ashlynn's contraction to subside, then gingerly guided Ashlynn's feet onto the stirrups at the end of the bed. I turned my head to the side as the doctor stuck her own head beneath the sheet covering Ashlynn. It was only polite. "Alright, you're more than ready." Dr. Alvarez turned her attention to me and blinked seriously. "If you want to be in the room during the birth, you're going to have to suit up." My eyes widened. "Suit up?" "Surgical gown, mask, etcetera. Just to be safe. I would go get Ashlynn's friend if you want her to be in here, too." We both looked to Ashlynn and she shook her head. "Just you." She turned to Dr. Alvarez and nodded to me. "Just James." I leaned into my fiance and kissed her forehead. "Are you sure?" "Laura was able to be in the room during Adrian's C-section, you weren't. I want you here for this." She took my hand and placed it on her stomach. "For her." "Thank you, Ashlynn." I kissed her softly and she laughed. "Go get dressed. I'm sick of these fucking contractions." I left the room with a stupid grin on my face. - - - By the time I returned to Ashlynn's room in my hospital garb, she was howling in pain. She passed up the epidural and opted for a natural birth. An unwise decision, in my opinion. "Alright, great. James, get over here. She won't start without you." The doctor waved me over. I found my place at Ashlynn's side and swiped a piece of hair from her already sweaty forehead. "You're so stubborn," I muttered, taking her hand in mine. "But you love me." Her shoulders shook with quiet laughter, but her laughter was broken off by another shout of pain. Her grip on my hand tightened to a death grip and I just ran my hand through her hair, letting her squeeze the life out of my other hand. "Push, Ashlynn. Push and count to ten." Dr. Alvarez was in a wheelie chair at the end of Ashlynn's bed, poised like a quarterback ready to receive the football during a play. "Ashlynn," she said. "Push now." Her calmness irked me. Ashlynn looked up at me and I nodded reassuringly. She breathed deeply and did as instructed. I counted down in her ear. When she finished, there were tears in her eyes. "Maybe this was a bad idea," she said to me, sniffling. "It's too late now, babe. You're okay, though. You're gonna do great." "If you say so." Ashlynn tilted her head back and groaned in pain before pushing again. A new sheen of sweat broke out o her forehead and someone shoved a cold rag into my hand. I pressed the rag to Ashlynn's head, softly and slowly mopping up the sweat on her face. "Push again, Ashlynn," the doctor urged. Ashlynn cried out as she pushed again. Why didn't she take the epidural? I felt so helpless, just letting her numb my hand and wiping her face and talking to her. I felt like I wasn't doing anything for her and it really fucking sucked. "Just a little bit longer and we'll have our little girl," I whispered to her as I rubbed the back of her neck. "A gorgeous little girl." Tears leaked out of her eyes and I continuously wiped them away. I could do nothing else. She looked so young now, with tears in her eyes. She didn't deserve this pain. "Just keep going, Ashlynn. Please." - - - An eternity, thirty minutes, passed before one of the nurses exclaimed that she could see a head. Ashlynn gasped in what I assumed was relief. She was so worn out. "Big push, Ashlynn. This is the last one." Ashlynn held her breath and squeezed the shit out of my hand and pushed until she was red in the face. There was a loud wail just as Ashlynn let out a sob. I literally yelped in surprise as I saw one of the nurses place a tiny body on a table. She cleaned the baby quickly and swaddled her like an expert before pushing her into Ashlynn's arms. "Oh, God," I said, breathing deeply. I bent over Ashlynn to get a better look at the baby. She was no longer wailing, having found warmth against her mother's chest. After a few seconds, though, the baby turned and opened her eyes. Her large orbs were a light blue, almost clear. Ashlynn laughed through her tears. "Your eyes." I looked up at Ashlynn and blinked. She was sweaty and red and blotchy, but she looked beautiful. God, I loved her so much. I smiled. "She has your eyes," she said, smiling. "She's yours." I ran my hand through my hair and gave a dumb nod. "She is." I took my hand and brushed the baby's small tuft of brown hair to the side. "She's gorgeous." "She needs a name." Ashlynn bounced the baby in her arms and looked up at me. "Any ideas?" "Lux." "My mom's nickname." She blinked. "How'd you know that?" "You told me once. When we first met. You probably wouldn't remember though." I smirked. "You were drunk." Ashlynn shook her head. "What about Lux Cynthia?" I stiffened and my face fell at the sound of my mother's name. I hadn't heard it in ages. It sounded so alien. "Shit." Ashlynn blinked and then started to apologize. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to say that." I shook my head. "No, I like it." My hand lowered to the baby's face and I brushed a knuckled over her cheek. She moved in the direction of my finger, but her eyes were closed. I smiled up at Ashlynn. "It fits." Ashlynn returned my smile, then we both turned our attention to Lux. Our little girl. |

A very small part before I post the end. - - - Ashlynn's POV There was a small hand squishing my nose against my face. I swatted it away and a disembodied giggle filled my ears. "Mommy, wake up!" Adrian. "Mommy." He poked my cheek. "Get up. Dad said." I brought my hand to my face and rubbed my eyes open. My blue-eyed son peered down at me through his unruly blonde curls. He was about to push his hand into my cheek again when I grabbed his hand and blew a raspberry into it. He shrieked with laughter. "Hi, sweetheart," I greeted, kissing his forehead. "Where is the baby?" "Sleeping with all of the other babies." I sat up in bed and looked to my left, where James was dozing in a chair. His feet were propped up on my bed. I leaned forward with Adrian in my arms and said, "Tell daddy to wake up like you did to me, okay?" Adrian nodded eagerly and crawled into his father's lap. "Daaaddy," he sang, poking James in the forehead. "Get uuuuppp!" As Adrian went to work on waking up the sleeping monster that was my fiance, I pressed the nurse call button. The nurse arrived a few minutes later and I requested that she get Lux. She scurried off and returned a few minutes later with the wiggling bundle in her arms. Adrian and James didn't bat an eyelash as they spoke, Adrian giggling as James poked at his belly. "Adrian, come here." My voice was soft as I held his sister in my arms. She gazed about the room, her blue eyes scanning over me, then over Adrian as he crawled back onto the bed. He looked up at me, then down at the baby, and back up to me again. "Her name's Lux. Say hi." As Adrian skimmed his small hand down his sister's cheek, James rose from the chair and stood next to the bed, looming over us. There was a small smile on his face and he smiled a bit wider when he caught me staring up at him. "So," he said, leaning into me. "So?" James kissed my forehead. "So, how do you feel about planning a wedding? I want us to get married after the tour." "Seriously?" "Seriously. I want us to be a real family." He settled on the edge of the bed, looping one arm around my shoulder while his other protectively wrapped around Adrian and Lux. I rested my head against James' chest and Adrian leaned back against mine, as Lux had fallen asleep in my arms. I let out a happy sigh and smiled at the sight of them. A family. My family. |

The epilogue! I just want to thank you all for sticking with this fic for so long. I never meant for it to last so long, but I hope you enjoyed it! - - - Ten Years Later Had you been at the wedding, you would've thought it was a catastrophe. James still had his mullet and Adrian insisted upon wearing a bright green tuxedo with a yellow clip on tie. The guests were a ragtag group of long-haired musicians and their guests and what little close friends and family James and I had. James' siblings came along and my father pulled his head out of his ass long enough to show his face, but I walked myself down the aisle. Looking at the wedding album still put me in a fit of hysterics. The wedding was literally a disaster with the lopsided cake and the catering company that failed to show up, making us resort to ordering Chinese food for the reception. But I loved every second of it. Life with James was no different afterward; there was always some sort of complication, but we got through it. We always did. "Mom, can you tell Lux to stay out of my room?!" Adrian, now fourteen, stomped into the kitchen. I looked up from my datebook, where I was going over my schedule, and lifted my eyebrows at him. He was tall and lanky now, towering above me at 5'11" or so and he looked exactly like James. It was frightening. "I think I'm old enough for a lock now! She messed up my game!" The ten year old Lux, with her bright blue eyes and wavy brown hair skidded into the kitchen and pumped into Adrian. He gave her a shove towards the table and she caught it, grinning widely. Her eyes found mine and she broke into a pout. "I didn't do anything! He wouldn't let me have a turn!" Just as I was about to reprimand them both, James strolled into the kitchen. He took off his glasses and cleaned the lenses with his whitw shirt. We all turned to face him and he blinked. He eyed me, then the kids, then me again. His eyebrows furrowed. "What's going on?" Lux and Adrian turned to their dad and began yelling over one another. "She made me die!" "He wouldn't share!" "But dad you said -" "-he said to share!" James closed his eyes and shook his head. "Lux made you die?" "On the game, dad! God!" "Don't say that." He put his glasses back on. "You guys confuse me. Go play the game and share!" He waved them off and laughed as they skidded out of the kitchen, chasing one another. "Tell me again when we're getting rid of them," James said, sliding into the chair next to mine. "Never. That's the whole point of being a parent." He leaned over, laughing, and pressed his lips to mine. "What's the plan for today?" I smiled, my lips skimming his. "Nothing." "Or we can sit around for a little while and then take those monsters out for dinner." James pushed away from the table and got up. I watched as he walked behind me. His hands rested on my shoulder and he pressed his thumbs into my back before he started massaging me. Imagine a very cliché married couple, like from a movie, and you had us. "Or you can rub my shoulders all day." He leaned forward, his soft laugh filling my ears. "Nope." He hooked his chin over my left shoulder and eyed me innocently. "You're lucky I love you." A small smile snaked across his face. "I know, Ash." He hugged his arms around the back of the chair, resting his hands against my stomach and nuzzled his nose against my neck. "I know I'm lucky." Fuck it. I was luckier. I had two wonderful, though rowdy, children and an amazing husband. Yes, I was luckier. |
