Another Multi-entry fic spilling out of me :rolleyes: This was originally written for English class, but I would LOVE to see what you girls think :D

Chapter 1

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Shouts fill the stadium in Portland, Oregon at the late hour of midnight on February 26th, 2010. The Big 4, Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeth, and Metallica, have just finished their 5th concert of their year-long tour together. The Big 4 is a term used to describe the four heavy metal bands that are still alive and touring after almost 30 years together. A voice bellowing through the speakers breaks through the wall of shouts the crowd has created. “Thank you Portland! We will see you very fucking soon! The Big 4 loves you,” shouts the little Danish drummer, Lars Ulrich.
Time for all four bands to come out for a group photo. Dave Mustaine comes out smiling, giving James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, and Rob Trujillo a hearty hug. He smiles at Lars. Lars shoots him an evil look, wiping the grin right off of Dave’s face. Dave tries to at least get a hand shake from the little Dane, but Lars goes right passed him, purposely bumping into his shoulder on the way by.
“What’s up with you and Dave?” asks James. Lars pauses and poses as if he is yelling at the photographer for the group photo, and then answers James.
“You of all people here should know exactly what my problem is with him,” barks Lars. With those words, he storms off, leaving James behind looking at him with utter confusion. Lars goes off stage and catches Dave before he gets on the Megadeth bus.
“What in the world is going through your head, Dave? What makes you think...”
“Lars, just the person I wanted to see...” Dave chirpped.
“No, you need to be quiet,” ordered Lars. Though he is short, Lars is very intimidating when he’s angry. Dave is immediately quiet. “What makes you think that you should have played ‘The Mechanix’ tonight, eh? That is technically not a Megadeth song. Maybe you can get away with it on tours without us, but when you are on tour with us, that song is not even an option! We don’t play ‘The Four Horseman’ on this tour, do we?” Dave began to answer, but Lars finished the sentence for him. “No! We don’t! So what right do you have to play ‘Mechanix’?”
“I’m sorry, Lars, but it was a fan’s request. You know how you are about fans. This guy had never been to a concert in his life and has been trying to for 15 years. He just now by some great stroke of luck got to be here tonight thanks to a generous coworker. Wouldn’t you have done the same thing?”
“Maybe on a tour that is strictly Metallica, but not when you guys are on the road with us. It isn’t right, and at least we understand that. Honestly, where is your head at?” Dave wasn’t sure how to answer that without making the situation worse, so he turned around, hurt, and got onto his bus, leaving Lars behind.
Just to get it all started... what do you think so far?? :)
Chapter 2
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

That night on the Megadeth tour bus, Dave addresses the band about Lars’ rantings. He feels bad that he has to bring somewhat bad news to his band mates whom, right now, look so pumped after a great show. But he also wants to try and get Lars on his good side, so he knows this has to be done. “Ok, guys, listen up. I was confronted today by Lars, and he wasn’t very happy with a certain song we played today,” Dave begins.

“Oh, what a surprise. He is always such a sunshine-y happy person,” bass guitarist Dave Ellefson jokes, “What song could have possibly disrupted his perfectly happy mood?” Everyone on the bus laughs, except Mustaine. Once the band notices Dave’s expression, the bus gets eerily silent. “Sorry, man, finish what you had to say.”

“As you all know, I wrote the song ‘The Mechanix’ when I was with Metallica way back when, correct?” everyone on the bus nods, “Well, since I was with them when I wrote it, they felt rather cheated when I used it for my own in this band. And we played it tonight at a concert we share with them. Yeah, not a good idea. They don’t play their version, ‘The Four Horsemen’, at these concerts because it is the same melody line and guitar riffs as my original write, but slower speed and different lyrics. Apparently there was some silent agreement that I didn’t know about that said we can’t play those on this tour. I just got my ear gnawed off for doing so...”

“But, we have it scheduled to be played in 3 days in Phoenix! What are we going to replace it with?” Ellefson asks. Mustaine has to think for a few seconds before answering.

“Just stick ‘Sweating Bullets’ in its place. We’ll play that instead.”

“But we haven’t played that song for years! I’m not even sure I remember it all that much.”

“Well, we will have to whip out ‘Countdown to Extinction’ and listen to track 5 very intently.” snapped Dave. He didn’t mean to get snippy, but tonight had been rough on him. He explains to the group that he is tired and is heading to bed early. With that, he turns to the back of the bus and enters the sleeping quarters to recharge from a long day.

Meanwhile, on the Metallica tour bus, James pulls Lars to the side and talks to him about what happened earlier today after the concert. Normally, Lars isn’t harsh with James unless something is really bugging him. “Why did you snap at me earlier? Did I say something wrong?”

“No, I’m just upset with Dave. Heh, what else is new?” Lars replies.

“Well, what’s going on with Dave? I know it’s kind of weird playing with him again, but I thought you of all people would be thrilled to see him again. You guys were great friends back in the early days of Metallica... you know... back when you had hair and all.” jokes James. But Lars isn’t at all in the mood for joking around.

“He played ‘Mechanix’. That isn’t even technically a Megadeth song! He wrote that with us! We don’t play ‘Horseman’ during this tour because it just isn’t right, so why would he even begin to think it was even remotely ok for him to play ‘Mechanix’?”

“I don’t know. Did he give you a reason?”

“He said some fan that has been trying to score tickets for 15 years requested it.”

“Well then there it is. You would have done the same thing, right?”

“Gah! Now you are sounding just like him! He said the same thing!”

“Well, he has a point. You love trying to make the fans happy. You would have played ‘Horseman’ if a crazy fan who has been ticket hunting for 15 years asked, wouldn’t you?”

“It’s like I told him earlier, maybe on a Metallica only tour, but not when we are on tour with him.”

“Maybe you could at least apologize for yelling at him. He is only trying to be civil about things...”

“I will not apologize for something I didn’t do! If you think I will ever say ‘I’m Sorry’ to him for not letting him play a song that isn’t rightfully his, then you are nuts!” retorts the drummer. Before getting up to stomp off to bed angrily, he shoots James a hateful glare that pierces through James’ skull. He whips around and storms off into the back room and slams the door shut behind him. James closes his eyes and sighs deeply.

“What’s gotten into him?” asks Kirk.

“It’s a long story...” James starts. Kirk yawns and checks the time.

“Ugh, 3am? I have to get some sleep. I’m worn out. Maybe you can give me a brief summary in the morning. Goodnight.”

“Goodnight, Kirk.”

After that night, Dave and Lars really didn’t talk much. There was never a reason for them to speak to each other. Lars kept his distance, and Dave didn’t put “The Mechanix” in any of the set lists. Most would think that the feud had been settled, or Lars had at least apologized for being cranky. But things were so tense between him and Dave anymore that Lars could strike fear into Dave by just looking at him a certain way.

Chapter 3

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Two months pass before James brings up anything about Dave to Lars again. When he does, it goes about the same way things went the first time. But something interesting popped up in this conversation that Lars hadn’t let slip the first time. After asking Lars about how he felt when he kicked Dave out, James noticed Lars’ pupils get slightly wider and his body tense up ever so slightly. Bingo. Now, James finds out what the real problem is that eats away at Lars’ brain.
“For almost 30 years now I am haunted by what I may have brought upon him. What if people don’t know I kicked him out for drug abuse? If they think it’s because his guitar playing was horrid, then he may get constant crap from our fans, which is the last thing that I could ever wish upon an old friend,” explains Lars. James can read emotions from Lars’ barely noticeable facial expressions as if they were written on there in size 64 Arial font. Lars was apprehensive about saying those emotional words right from the start, and now it looked as if he may even be feeling a bit of remorse for telling James the truth.
“I bet if you told him the same thing you just told me, the feud would be over, and you wouldn’t have to keep this all bottled up for another 30 years,” James suggests.
“Bah, what do you know? You don’t know what it’s like to kick your own friend out of a band... out of a family,” after finishing this sentence however, Lars instantly knows he has touched a bad nerve in his friend. James’ face becomes heavy with his past as he remembers his experiences with losing people close to him. “Oh man, I’m sorry James. I didn’t...”
“No, you don’t get it do you? I know better than anyone on this damn bus what it’s like to lose someone close to me. My father left our family when I was 13 for reasons that are still unknown to me. Just shortly after that, when I was 16, my mother died from cancer, Lars...”
“I know, Jamie, and I...”
“Don’t call me Jamie. That’s what my brother calls me. I had to live with him because my father didn’t want me.”
“But, you didn’t seem to mind me calling you Jamie earl--”
“Well, earlier I considered you to be like my brother. But if you can’t do something so simple as sit down and just talk to Dave about this stuff, then I don’t even know why I am sitting here talking to you now,” James snaps in a hurt tone. Lars looks briefly into James’ eyes and feels about 3 inches tall after seeing the obvious pain Lars caused him staring back. He looks down at the ground, his shoes are suddenly much more interesting than the sheer silence between the two friends. James looks at Lars one last time, hoping that he will say something. When Lars continues to be silent, he turns around and heads for the tuning and attitude room to begin preparing for the show here in Dallas tonight, leaving a broken Lars to his thoughts.
Chapter 4
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A month later, May 17th, 2010, the tour has reached Springfield, Missouri. Anthrax and Slayer have performed already and Megadeth is finishing up with their final song titled “A Tout Le Monde”. Dave’s vocals ring through the stadium, “A tout le monde, a tout mes amis, je vous aime, je dois partir. These are the last words, I’ll ever speak, and they’ll set me free...” as Mustaine sings these last lyrics, Ellefson finishes out the song with the final guitar part. The stadium is silent for a few seconds and then erupts in cheers. Tonight was the best performance Megadeth has done all tour, and “A Tout Le Monde” was played perfectly.

Megadeth walks off, feeling good about getting such great reactions from the crowd. In the stands, fans wait eagerly for Metallica to take the stage. A steady stream of yells and screams fill the air, gradually getting louder as it comes closer and closer to Metallica’s scheduled time to play. Some fans even start chanting, “‘Tallica! ‘Tallica! ‘Tallica!” over and over again. Only the chime of the single bell that starts the song “The Ecstasy of Gold” that plays right before Metallica gets ready to take the stage stops the chants and replaces it with a huge roar from every Metallica fan in the house. After the final note is played, Lars comes running out from backstage and stands up on his stool, his right leg propped up on his snare drum. He yells at the crowd and throws his plastic cup, still containing some water, into the air. Once it hits the ground, he counts off the song “Creeping Death” with 4 strikes to the high-hat. Once the song starts, James, Kirk, and Rob come running out onto the stage playing the fast riffs that make up “Creeping Death”.

Towards the end of the song, Lars gets lost in his thoughts and misses a cut off, stopping about two beats too late. James chuckles into the microphone, stopping the song momentarily, and says, “Lars, you all there today? Where is your head at?” jokes James. That last sentence echoes around Lars’ head. Where is your head at... He had said the same thing to Dave just 3 months ago back in February. James’ voice snaps him back to reality, “ONE TWO THREE FOUR!” yells the singer. Lars almost comes in late again, but finishes the song with no problem, although still distracted for the rest of the show.

“Who wants to bring back the rest of the Big 4 for a little celebration?” James asks the audience at the end of the Metallica portion of the show. The crowd erupts in thunderous cheers, screams, and applause. Each and every person in the house puts their horns to the sky simultaneously. “Well alright then. Guys, get out here! I think we need to give these fans a special treat just from us.”

The other bands come back out onto the stage geared up and ready to rock. First, Anthrax members come out. Scott Ian, the guitarist from Anthrax, hugs Kirk and shakes hands with James before taking his spot on the stage. Next, Slayer members take the stage. Dave Lombardo, the drummer from Slayer, gives Scott a hearty hug and shakes Lars’ hand, adding a strong pat on the shoulder, before taking his place behind a snare drum to the left side of Lars’ drum set. Finally, Megadeth members make their way to the stage. Dave Mustaine gives James and Kirk a hug, and says a few nice words about their performance. Dave spots Lars and gets an idea. He walks calmly over to Lars and catches his eye. He out stretches his arm, waiting for Lars to shake it. Lars looks at the guitarist’s hand, then into his eyes. Dave gives a slight smile as Lars looks at him. Lars looks to his right quickly and then does a double take. James is giving him a look as if to say “Shake his hand, Lars. Now...” Hesitantly, Lars shakes Dave’s hand firmly once and turns to his drum set, waiting to start the song. Dave smile grows ever so slightly. He feels that maybe, just maybe, Lars could be lightening up a bit.

“Alright, now that we have the whole gang out here, how about we play a really difficult song?” jokes James. The crowd erupts in cheers once again. “I’m sure all of you know a tune titled ‘Am I Evil?’ by Diamond Head, right?” teases James. If anyone thought that crowd couldn’t get any louder than it already had, they were wrong. The stadium rumbled with roaring cheers from the crowd. “Alright, alright! Okaaayy! Haha you guys ready?” James asks, motioning to the ginormous group of rock stars behind him. They yell back at him, and James turns back to the mic. “Alright... ONE TWO THREE FOUR!” bellows James’ voice, kicking off the song. All throughout the playing of “Am I Evil?”, Dave has a smile on his face, even when he is singing. This could be the start of something good. At the end of the concert, however, Lars proves him wrong.

Chapter 5

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dave goes up to Lars backstage and tries to spark a conversation. “What’s going on Lars? Is there something you want to talk about? I thought you were just upset about the song we played. There must be someth--”
“I really don’t want to talk at all right now.”
“But, Lars, I...”
“Are you having trouble hearing me? Get out of my way! I do not want to talk to you!” yells the irate little Dane. Lars storms off, trying to hold back his emotions. James sees Lars walking quickly to the bus. James runs up and catches him before he locks himself on the bus.
“Lars!” James shouts, “Lars! Wait up!” Lars slows down slightly, but does not stop. Eventually, James catches up. “What happened back there? Why do you look so upset?” James asks. Lars stays quiet and tries to get past his friend. James holds him back by his shoulders and looks him straight in the eyes. Lars avoids eye contact.
“James, come on, move. I need to get on the bus...”
“Why? We aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.”
“I just want to get on the bus.”
“I just want to talk to you. If you let me talk to you, then we can get on the bus.” Lars stares at James with annoyance. “Please? I just want to talk...” Lars looks up and slouches a bit, about ready to give in after James said ‘Please’. “Come on, Lars...” Lars groans.
“Fine! But let’s talk on the bus.”
“That’s fine with me,” says James, accepting the compromise. They make their way to the bus in silence, walking side by side. Once they reach the bus, they go inside and lock the door to prevent disruptions. “So, what’s going on?” Lars sighs and hesitates to answer the simple question. He can feel the burn of tears building up already, but chokes them back.
“Dave and I used to be friends. But after the whole incident in ‘83, we had this unspoken pact to never like each other again. He confirmed my fear of long time rivalry by starting up Megadeth to shove my ‘mistake’ in my face. To see him doing so well with his own band is great. It’s just... you know how I am. You are the only one I open up to like this because you are like a brother to me. I really don’t like appearing weak to people even if they are my friends,” Lars explains. James sighs deeply, taking in everything Lars just said.
“Well what is it exactly that you fear?”
“Did I not make myself clear? Blubbering like a 16 year old girl who got dumped on Prom night isn’t exactly smiled upon from a heavy metal drummer. Looking back on my decision to kick him out, I feel as though I may have made the wrong decision. I probably caused Dave a whole bunch of stress with one quick, hasty decision! How would that make you feel talking about that kind of situation to that person’s face, eh?”
“...And the truth tumbles out.”
“Shut up...”
“No, this is good. Lars! You do realize that all you have to do is talk to him, right? You can solve this! Do you really think he is going to care if you shed a tear or two? For all you know, he may cry bringing up his past too! No matter who you are or what you do for a living, you don’t have to worry about being looked down on for showing your emotions. Every human being does it. What makes you any different?” asks James. Anyone that knows Lars can tell he wants to fire back at James and give him a reason why he can’t face his feelings, but he can’t come up with a logical reason. After Lars’ few seconds of silence, James smiles. “Ah, so now you see what I was talking about.”
“Yeah, I guess being stubborn and full of yourself can come back and bite you in the ass.” Lars says with a chuckle. James laughs along with him. “Well,” Lars begins after he and James stop laughing, “I won’t see Dave until we are at our next gig in Iowa City 3 days from now. That will give me time to think about what I’m going to say.”
“Good idea,” says James. He pauses for a second, then smiles and sighs.
“What?” Lars asks.
“I am just thrilled that you and Dave are finally going to be civil with each other again. That will make the rest of this tour so much easier on everyone.”
“Yeah, thanks for talking some sense into me. I needed that.”
“Anytime brother,” James says with a smile. Lars replies with a smile of his own.
Meanwhile, as James and Lars are conversing on the Metallica bus, Dave is left, sitting on one of the smaller speakers backstage, dumbfounded, wondering what he could have possibly done to make Lars blow up like that. Was it something I said? Dave begins to think about everything he has done that could have set Lars off. Did I do something wrong? Was it the handshake? Does he still hate me for the choices I made almost 30 years ago? What is going on is his head? He becomes overwhelmed with his own thoughts.
“Hey, Dave,” hollers Ellefson, “Where have you been? We have to get going. Got to be in Iowa City a bit early if we are to get stage practice in.”
“Ok, I’ll be on the bus in a minute. I have to, uh, use the restroom.” Lie.
“Oh, alright. See you in a few.”
“Yeah,” Mustaine replies as Ellefson turns to go to the bus. So many thoughts are fluttering around in his head. Should I confront him and see if he will talk? Would that just make him mad? Surely it would, he isn’t one for talking. What do I do? He decides to try and clear his mind of the situation until he can actually get a hold of Lars. It makes no sense to dwell on it now. I won’t see him for a couple days. He thinks to himself. He stands up and begins to make his way for the bus. Maybe a little sleep will help clear my head...
