Chapter 6

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Two days later, Megadeth arrives in Iowa City, Iowa to prepare for the performance of the 18th show on the tour. They are the first band to arrive so they can have the time for stage practice.This way they can practice on the actual stage they will use in concert, and they can practice with the light show, pyrotechnics, and all other extras for the concert.
“Can we run ‘Sweating Bullets’ with the lights?” Ellefson asks the tech team.
“Yeah, that shouldn’t be a big deal,” chirps one of the tech guys.
“Ok, thanks! Shawn, start us off!” Ellefson yells to the drummer, Shawn Drover. Starting with 4 stick clicks to give the tempo, Shawn goes into the short, one measure drum solo that starts off the song. The rest of the band follows in after him. However, lost in his thoughts, Dave misses his vocal entrance. The only thing that snaps Mustaine back to reality is Ellefson’s singing of the main lyrics.
“Hello me, meet the real me...” Mustaine then realizes what he has done and takes over his part.
“And my misfits way of life. A dark black past is my most valued possession...” oops.
Meanwhile, on the Metallica bus, Lars is sitting on the couch, deep in thought. What did I do all those years ago? Could I have truly hurt one of my good friends? What if he’s just pulling my leg and is really still mad at me for kicking him out? I will look like a fool to him if that’s the truth... His thoughts are interrupted by Kirk nearly tripping over Lars’ outstretched leg.
“Woah, man, I’m sorry,” says Kirk.
“Oh, no, you’re fine Kirk,” Lars says, not once breaking concentration on the window opposite him. He is too busy thinking to look at Kirk right now.
“Dude, are you ok? You seem to be in pretty deep thought there.”
“I’m fine, I’m just... tired. That’s all. I need to get out and stretch my legs, then get right back on so we can get to the hotel and I can get some sleep. We can rehearse tomorrow morning if we get to the tuning room early.”
“Oh, alright. I’ll let everyone else know.”
“Thanks.”
“No problem, man,” says Kirk as he exits the bus. Lars stops his thoughts and gets off the bus to stretch and go find something other than water or Diet Coke to drink before the bus leaves for the hotel the bands will be staying at for the night.
The next morning, after all the bands are awake, they get ready to board the buses to go back to the stadium. Before Dave gets on the Megadeth bus, Lars catches him and pulls him aside.
“Hey Dave, I need to talk to you. Can we go back to the rooms for a minute?”
“Yeah, no problem,” says Dave, “Anything you need. I am just surprised you actually want to talk with me.” For the first time in a long time, Lars smiled at what Dave said. Dave noticed the smile and got a little hope that maybe this conversation will turn out to be good after all.
Once they get back to the rooms, they enter one of them and sit down opposite each other. For a few moments, the room is silent. Neither one of them knows what to say. Lars finally takes the stand and says something.
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry for kicking you out of the band without warning. I’m sorry I didn’t give you the chance to get help with your drinking problems. I’m sorry that what I did caused you to get crap from some of our fans for the last 30 years...” Dave stops him.
“You have no need to apologize. You did what you thought was right. I was childish for trying to prove myself superior by starting a rival band.”
“Childish? You guys have come up with some really cool stuff! Like that song you guys put in instead of ‘Mechanix’? That one is really awesome!”
“Thanks. But you guys are the real monsters of this group. I mean, every album you guys have released has at least one hit on it if not more! Talk about awesome!”
“Haha, thanks. But you know, the reason I am always so up tight is because I felt like I had made a wrong choice kicking you out. It was always haunting me that I may have hurt my friend with such a hasty decision.”
“Well, it’s true. I mean, I get idiots that think it’s cool to see our bus and yell ‘METALLICA!’ just to mock me. I see things about me all the time on the internet about how I could never measure up to Kirk’s skills because he was the one that replaced me. I still get all kinds of crap to this day about it even though we are on tour together. Amazing what something so small, like getting kicked out of a band, can do.”
“Yeah. It was just too hard on us having you in the band. If you ever had too much to drink, which was quite often back then, you became insanely mean in an instant. It was like it wasn’t even you anymore. I was tired of fearing my own friend.”
“I know, I understand, and I’m sorry for that. I should have gotten help, but I didn’t, and look what it did to me.”
Lars lets out a short laugh, shakes his head, and smiles.
“What?” Dave asks.
“Oh, nothing. I just can’t believe how childish I was being. For 30 years I let myself believe I hated you just because I was afraid of showing my true emotions.”
“Ah, don’t beat yourself up about it. No one is blaming you for not wanting to get all emotional. You are supposed to be a heavy metal star. Being open about your feelings for some reason isn’t in the recipe for the stereotypical metal band member,” Dave jokes. He and Lars laugh. Together. It’s almost as if they are back in 1983 again. Laughing, joking, messing around. Acting like teenagers.
“Come on,” says Lars, “Let’s go catch up with the others.”
“Alright. Oh and, uh, Lars?”
“Yeah, man?”
“Have a good show tonight, for old times sake? Just have fun!”
“You know it, man. Same to you,” Lars replies. Both of them walk to the buses with a smile on their faces.
The bus rides back to the stadium are full of jokes and laughter. Every member of every band is in a good mood and pumped for the show tonight. James congratulates Lars on having the courage to finally talk to Dave.
“That was a good thing you did back there. I’m glad you guys are being civil with each other again,” James says to a smiling Lars as they get off the bus and walk towards the tuning room.
“Yeah, well it was easier than I thought. We even joked around about the whole thing. It’s you that needs some credit for talking to me in the first place. Had you not talked me into it, Dave and I would still be fighting today.”
“So, Iowa City... do you have any songs in mind that you want to play?”
Lars thinks it over. What song have we not played in this tour? ‘Dyers Eve’ hasn’t been played in awhile. A few lyrics come to his mind... “Dear Mother, Dear Father. What is this hell you have put me through?”... No, that would bring up too much from James’ past. It needs to be a song that would make everyone happy...
“I’ve got it! Let’s play ‘Horsemen’! I’ll let Dave know what we’re doing, and he can play ‘Mechanix’ with Megadeth,” Lars explains with a smile. James smiles from ear to ear.
“That’s a great idea, Lars,” says James. Both of them look at each other and smile for a second. As they near the Metallica tuning room, Lars branches off and heads for the Megadeth tuning room to tell Dave the news.
“Hey Dave,” Lars hollers, “come here for a second!”
“Yeah, Lars, what’s up?” asks Dave as he gets closer to Lars.
“I think you should make a change to your set list again.”
Oh no, not this again... Dave thinks with worry. “Um, which song were you thinking of replacing?” Dave finishes his question, and Lars immediately smiles. Dave sees the drummer smiling and starts to smile as well.
“Sweating Bullets. I think the song is getting a little old. You should put in ‘The Mechanix’ instead.”
“Really? That won’t bother you?” Dave asks surprised.
“If it bothered me, would I ask you to play it?”
“Well, I just thought tha--”
“We want to play ‘The Four Horsemen’ tonight. I think it would be a neat way to show the fans that everything is cool between us,” Lars explains. A big smile crosses Dave’s face. Lars outstretches a hand, waiting for Dave to shake back. Dave looks at the hand, then at Lars. He starts to walk away, but comes back laughing and shakes his hand, just as it should have been done 3 days ago.
“Alright, see you out there!”
“Later, Dave, have fun,” says Lars as he turns around to go back to the Metallica tuning room.
When Lars gets back to the tuning room, Kirk, Rob, and James have already started relearning ‘The Four Horsemen’ on their own. Lars smiles as he takes his spot and begins taping up his fingers, preparing for the show. James counts, “ONE TWO THREE FOUR” to start the song, and rehearsal begins with a good start. By the end of rehearsal, everyone is smiling, pumped up for what is going to be the best concert of the tour.
Dave and his band get ready to take the stage as Anthrax finishes up their time slot. Show time...
“Alright boys, lets do this,” Dave says to pump up the band. They all high five each other and wish them a good show. Their clock has started, and Megadeth takes the stage. They play through their first few songs, “Holy Wars”, “Hangar 18”, “Wake Up Dead”, “Skin O’ My Teeth”, and “Trust”. All of the songs get a LOT of praise from the crowd. As the band prepares to play “The Mechanix”, Dave makes a quick announcement.
“I’d like to let this next one go out to a good friend of mine. We may have had our troubles in the past, and have been butting heads for nearly 30 years, but recently, we have realized that trying to out do each other for so long was getting rather tiring. So, this next song goes out to Mr. Lars Ulrich! I think you guys will recognize it...”
Shawn gives his four drumstick clicks setting the tempo for “The Mechanix”, and the rest of the band follows him in with the intro. No matter how hard he tried, Dave couldn’t wipe the smile off his face for the remainder of the song. This was by far the best performance of “The Mechanix” that Megadeth has ever done.
Megadeth finishes up their part of the show with “Symphony of Destruction” and “Peace Sells”. Next up, Slayer takes the stage and blows the crowd away with a set list including songs like “Raining Blood”, “War Ensemble”, “Angel of Death”, and “Seasons in the Abyss”. Then, last, but not least, Metallica takes the stage for their portion of the show. They play their normal set list starting with “Creeping Death”, eventually hitting “All Nightmare Long” and “One” in the middle of the show, and wrapping it up with the new addition, “The Four Horsemen” as their final piece. Lars decides to return the favor to Dave and give him a shout out as well.
“So, Megadeth had a pretty wicked performance of ‘Mechanix’, no?” he asks the audience. They reply with a roar of cheers and several horns to the sky. “Wow, is that all you’ve got? Surely it was a better performance than that,” he teases. This time the stadium rumbles with a deafening roar of cheers and all horns to the sky. “That’s what I thought. Well, tonight, we kind of had the same idea. They played ‘Mechanix’, so how would you guys like to hear us play ‘The Four Horsemen’?” even more cheers break through to the stage where Lars stands after he announces the song. “Alright then! Let’s get this sucker fired up! James! Where are you man? Get back out here! We need you to sing every pitch perfectly for us,” the crowd laughs, “Oh, I mean scream all the pitches perfectly, my mistake,” even more laughter comes from the crowd, “You back there James?” as he asks, James comes striding out onto the stage, acting like royalty.
“Excuse me if the Mighty James Hetfield was tuning his guitar so it will sound halfway decent when I play for you peons,” James jokes. The sound of laughter from every single person in the 60,000 seats that fill the stadium fills the air. Lars laughs as he takes the mic away.
“Alright, let’s get this thing started,” yells Lars before he runs back to his drum set to count off the song. A strong beginning sets up the incredible performance to follow. Guitar rhythms and solos were precise, drumbeats were spot on, vocals sounded incredible. It was an all around fantastic performance of a song that hadn’t been played on tour since 1987.
“Thank you Iowa City, Metallica loves you!” James yells at the end of the song. Lars throws his drumsticks into the crowd. Kirk, James, and Rob toss handful upon handful of guitar picks into the crowd. Lars even grabs one of his spare pair of drumsticks and tosses them out as well. Once all of that has been done, Lars, Kirk and Rob go backstage. James acts as if he is going to follow them back, but comes back, puts his guitar on and screams into the mic. The audience screams back... they want more.
James takes off his guitar and starts handing it to one of the stage crew. The audience hisses in disapproval. James turns back around, laughing, and puts his guitar on again, strumming a few notes. He takes the guitar off again, still wanting to mess with the crowd. “You want more?” James hollers. The crowd erupts in cheers and James puts his guitar back on. “Sorry, no more for this show. Thank you, goodnight,” he says as he takes off his guitar once again, the audience immediately responding with stronger disapproval. James simple turns around to the mic and says, “Thank you, goodnight,” at which the crowd hisses at again. He turns around one final time and says, “Alright, alright. Enough fooling around. Let’s get down to business. I would like to welcome the rest of the Big 4 back out here to jam with us, what do ya say?” The cheers from the crowd are intense, “Alright, jeez, all you had to do was say yes. No need to yell or anything. Come on out, guys!”
The Big 4 take the stage once again to play the finale song “Am I Evil?” as a big group. By the first chorus of the song, everyone was singing along, “Am I evil? Yes, I am. Am I evil? I am man, yes I am”. Every band member could feel the insane amount of energy the crowd was giving off during this performance. Each band member was giving off every ounce of energy they had to their audience, and they were receiving twice as much energy back from them. The feeling was incredible. Everyone in the stadium was at least a little upset when the song was over, knowing that it was the end to a one in a million show. Even some of the band members wished that the song would’ve lasted forever.
“Iowa City! Did you have fun?” James hollers into the mic. The audience roars and whistles, showing their approval of tonight’s performance. “Good, because we all had fun too. You are an amazing crowd and we hope to see you very soon! Thank you, goodnight!”
The time has come for the group photo. Members from every band bunch together into one massive group, Slayer members mixed in with Megadeth members, Metallica mixed with Anthrax, Anthrax mixed with Slayer... just a huge jumble of random metal heads.
“Lars!” James calls for Lars over the crowd. He motions for Lars to join in his usual spot for pictures. Lars, however, looks to his right to see Dave standing up in front of the group. James notices who Lars is looking for, and accepts Scott Ian into Lars’ usual spot. Lars makes his way to the front.
“Hey, man, what’s up?”
“Hey, Lars! Not much really. Just waiting to get my picture taken with a rowdy crowd of nut jobs behind me... oh and the audience too,” Dave says with a chuckle. Lars laughs hysterically. Realizing the photographer is about to take the shot, Lars swings his right arm around Dave’s shoulders and throws his left hand in the air, holding yet another pair of drumsticks to the sky. The rivalry between Dave and Lars is finally over.
