Some Kind Of Monster

I'm starting to think that maybe James should just be alone. Hannah will have Ray and Fran can get herself a nice young (or older ) man to be her companion. James doesn't deserve either. He's just pissing me off now The way he is playing with these women is just cruel. And the sad thing is, Fran knows it. I mean she knows he's engaged to Hannah and wants to be with her and what not and yet, she still plays his game. But Hannah doesn't really know the extent of James' friendliness towards Fran. I'm sure if she did, she would kick his ass I don't know how this will all play out. But if he wants either of these women (assuming at least one of them is willing to forgive him or look past his indiscretions) he's going to have a lot of apologizing to do! |

In James' mind, he's just having Fran and the kids to stay while Hannah's away. He's not thinking about sex with her as meaning anything--they're divorced! Francesca, on the other hand, thinks she's halfway back into his life by being in his bed. She'll feel silly once she realises this was just a holiday for James. Hannah already suspects--thanks to her Dad planting the seed in her mind--that James is still being a little too friendly with Francesca. Although, obviously she doesn't know that they've slept together this trip. Don't worry--James will get his ass kicked by certain women very soon!

This time, in a cruel moment of déjà vu, James farewelled his children as they boarded the private jet at the same airfield where they had been with the paparazzi a month ago. Today, instead of their angry shouts at Hannah were the usual soft whirrs and clicks of cameras in the distance. It was nothing more than ambient noise in James’ life. Francesca turned to him on the tarmac. The children had already climbed inside the jet into their usual seats. James held Francesca back by the hand. ‘It was great to see you!’ he smiled as he kissed her softly, but had expected a little more of his parting kiss. She sighed, staring at the waiting paparazzi in the distance. ‘Is that all James?’ she asked, her voice was a little exasperated, but his face didn't understand. ‘Hannah’s back tomorrow’ he said, the tone of his voice had taken in his guilt. ‘Alright, well, I suppose we’ll see you in another month or so…’ she said simply, she had already turned and walked up the steps of the plane. She had hoped for some kind of commitment in his parting affection. She didn’t turn back or offer James a second glance. He sighed, he knew he deserved it. ‘Bye kids!’ he called out as the plane door shut behind him. He made faces at Marcella through the aeroplane window as it taxied away. Watching his family leave once more had to be the hardest feeling he had ever experienced. In London, I had taken Anthony to visit Ray for the last time this trip. Ray held onto Anthony until the final minute where he transferred him into his pram seat. ‘At least California won’t be as cold as it is here’ Ray said vaguely as he kissed me goodbye. The taxi door was open and waiting for me. I nodded simply, we were both hesitating to a heartfelt goodbye. ‘I hope you enjoyed your trip home’ Ray began with a smile. ‘I loved seeing you’ he confessed hopefully. ‘I followed you around the world once too!’ he winked. I laughed happily as Ray drew me into a long, kind kiss. ‘Don’t stay away too long’ he begged. Ray’s eyes surveyed his son in the back seat of the cab. ‘You can come and see him anytime Ray’. I stepped into the cab and Ray shut the door behind me. ‘Just, call first!’ I grinned. He waved me a gentle goodbye, and I watched him disappear into the distance in the rear view mirror with a sad lurch. While my instinct said to turn the cab around, I couldn’t yet. I thought of James and Anthony and of the life we were building in San Francisco. Ray wasn’t there yet, and I wasn’t sure he was ready to be a father again. We still hadn’t broached the topic of his drinking, his mental breakdown or the delusion he had in rehab about Francesca. I still had not known what had happened, but I wanted to know that their friendship was repaired: I suspected it was the cause of his drinking. He couldn’t take being away from the Hetfield’s as thought he could. He had quit for me, but they had been the best friends and the family he had never had. He had spent an equivalent length of time working for them, as James and Francesca had been married to each other. 15 years was a significant relationship, and I wasn’t sure that Ray would ever let go of the friendships he had procured. But I held out hope for him and for us as I smiled at the face of our young son. ‘Home?’ Anthony asked me innocently. ‘Yes’ I nodded. 'We're going home to see Daddy' I told him. James picked us up from SFO the next morning. Ray was right, California, while still cold in January, had breathed a significantly warmer cloud. The hum of the plane still rattled my ears as I arrived. Anthony had slept like and angel in my arms in our first class cabin. James had made it undetected by the airport paparazzi through to the arrival hall to greet us. There were seldom opportunities to do so without the press on his tail, but today, he was solitary and nostalgic. I saw his face and eyes warm up to us the second we emerged. Anthony waved back at James in excitement. ‘Dadda daaaada!’ he sung to James. He lifted Anthony into his arms. ‘He’s heavier’ he joked, lifting Anthony under the arms like a weight. ‘What have you been feeding him?!’ James laughed and kissed me in welcome. ‘Hi Hannah’ his voice settled to normal from his teasing tone. I enjoyed his soft kiss with a pause, I had missed him immensely too. We turned and headed back to the car with Peter and Big Mike following along, unnoticed as James’ security. ‘How was Ray?’ James asked kindly. I thought from his voice that he had been thinking about his friend. ‘He’s a lot better’ I said optimistically, ‘but he’s still a long way from dealing with the alcoholism, we didn’t even get to talk about it’ I admitted. James nodded, he seemed to understand acutely. ‘Has anything exciting happened since I’ve been gone?’ I asked inquisitively. James drove us home carefully, flicking his eyes to the rear view mirror to watch Anthony celebrating in his car seat, kicking his legs in joy to be home. James smiled knowingly. ‘Yeah, a few things!’ he grinned. His right hand left the steering wheel and smoothed my thigh. ‘I’ve missed you’ he said emotionally, his warm eyes leaving the road for a moment to smile. I took his hand in mine, he was warm and comforting, strong and stable. For now, it was what both Anthony and I needed in our lives. |

A photo of Billie Piper (the actress who plays Hannah) with her son Winston. So think of them as Hannah and Anthony!
