Well, she realised she did wrong too--but James was true to his nature, he cheated. Again. The irony is this time, it was his ex-wife!

I feel bad for sending Hannah home, but it's for the best. You'll see! :wink

okay, I was reading this again, I can't find reasons why James is acting like this, other than he is an total asshole/sexoholic. :ugh:

Not the James I love :(

What are the reasons behind his actions?
James first hired 'Belle' (or rather, he got Ray to hire her for him) because she resembled Francesca. She was young, blonde and willing to do anything, including impersonate his wife as well as do all the things that she wouldn't do for him in bed. James saw her as an extension of his wife, and even convinced himself to begin with that he wasn't cheating, that he was just seeking solice and company in a substitute Francesca while he was on tour. As Belle allowed James to get to know Hannah and her alias fell away, he began to fall for her for all the wrong reasons. The first summer they spent together (Call Me Francesca), he still saw her as someone who could stand in for Francesca while he was on tour. He was acting out a fantasy that she was some younger version of his wife before they had started a family. It took him back to all the things he had originally loved about Francesca in her youth.

In A French Connection, James now fully knew he was cheating and that it was Hannah, not Belle that he now wanted to spend time with. Francesca knew it too--she had now learnt who Hannah was, James was now completely hiding the affair that his wife knew he was having. Francesca never bought James' story that Hannah was a version of her that he had once loved. When he realised that Francesca's threats to leave were not idle threats anymore, he had tried to end his affair with Hannah. Little did he know that Ray had fallen for her.

James had completely overlooked through the entire series that the problems with his marriage weren't entirely sexual--they were suffering an enormous breakdown in communication because he thought that's what they were lacking. But it was of course much bigger than that: it was his drinking, his continued infidelities, his role as a father, his absence on tour, the lying, the sneaking around etc...She was mad enough to take the kids and leave, and she didn't even know half the stuff he had done with Hannah behind her back!

When James knowingly visited Hannah and Ray in London this time round, he wasn't just visiting to catch up with his old friends and meet Anthony, he was there with a purpose: to get Hannah back. Here's the crucial part: His actions, he thought, were different this time. He was alone now, he was not cheating on his soon to be ex-wife by pursuing a relationship with Hannah. He had complete and total disregard for Ray by taking what he thought was his. Now that Hannah had Anthony, James saw her as an opportunity to mend his own broken family by starting a new one. He still didn't truly see that what he was doing was simply 'acting out' the relationship he wished he could still have with Francesca. His relationship with Hannah was never a relationship in it's own right, it was always (but not purposely), James playing house with Hannah hoping that it might soon feel as real as his life had once with Francesca. He even hoped that if they had a family of their own, things might change.

When Ray turned up for Anthony's birthday before christmas and he found out that she had not asked Ray for a divorce, he realised Hannah was not going to let go of Ray so easily. He began to see that she really was still his and that Ray was prepared to fight for her. When Hannah left for London for christmas, all James wanted was some family time with Francesca and the kids. So without even needing to admit to her that his relationship with Hannah was failing, she let him back in to her life.

So the answer to your question, why is James behaving this way? He had never been honest with himself about what exactly Hannah was to him: she only ever stood in for his life with Francesca, and when it came down to it, beyond sex, she couldn't make him as happy as he had been with his own family. She saw it in his eyes when his children visited, that was what made him truly happy.

He finally came to realise that he had tried to replace Francesca with Hannah. He convinced himself that his relationship with Hannah was real in it's own right, but really, it wasn't. :(

Hope that explains it all! :wavey

More up soon! :biggrin

No problem! :biggrin

It wasn't just that she looked similar, because actually, she doesn't. His instructions to Ray to pick a girl from the website was 'nice tits and long blonde hair' which could really be anyone. It was the idea that he could have someone like Francesca if he wanted.

And yes, it is absolutely a mid-life crisis! Did you like Francesca yelling at him a few chapters ago: 'You've had your mid-life crisis James! Your punk haircut of 2012, the call girl and the motorbikes! Get over it!'

James saw no reason to delay his trip to Buenos Aires to see his children. He had been planning on visiting them next at the end of February, but now that he had been living alone, rattling in his large house without Hannah and Anthony for nearly two weeks, he packed his bags and chartered Lars’ jet south once more. This time, he had not told his family he was coming: his arrival would be a complete surprise. As always, he refused to read the tabloids—he didn’t care what they were saying about him and his relationships. He hadn’t even found the courage yet to tell Lars that Hannah had left him. He knew eventually that he wouldn’t need to.

He was glad for the lack of electronic communication on the plane. He had space to think while he planned what he would say to Francesca. He jiggled his legs like a nervous teen as he started passively out the window at the clouds in fear. She had to know by now that he wanted her back, he had thought he had made it obvious to her at Christmas. They had reconnected on a superficial level perhaps but he had been pleased for the progress he had made with her. She had allowed him to lead her by the hand as they took a cold walk on Christmas day through the forest in their property. He had kissed her desperately to warm her, and in the seclusion of the tress, without the children around, she had let him over and over again. James had poured them a hot bath when they returned and lit the scented candles Hannah had noticed around the edges of the bath. They had been one of his many Christmas presents to her. He had romanced his ex-wife as best he could with a massage and sex afterwards. He had even brushed her long wet hair in front of the mirror as he loved.
But it had been difficult to commit himself to his feelings for Francesca with Hannah’s things around them still. He still held out hope that they would marry in the New Year. He must have believed it, he thought to himself. He had even admitted it to Francesca.

In stark contrast to the cold, lonely house he had left behind in California, Buenos Aires was swelteringly hot in January. The heat waves sizzled in a diagonal haze off the beach and he sweated profusely during the taxi ride to the house, although, it may have been his nerves as much as the heat. He stood on the pavement absorbing the painfully hot midday sun with a wave of nausea. He wanted to enter the front door of what had once been his own holiday home, but today he was oddly apprehensive. He looked down at his larger than normal suitcase that gave him away. He was dressed ridiculously in his heavy blue jeans and a black cotton shirt. Even if he’d wanted to, he couldn’t loiter on the street in the heat anymore. He let himself in the coded gate and made to the front door. Before he could find his keys, the door opened: Francesca’s face was pale with surprise.

‘James!’ she seemed hesitant to open the door for a minute. She barred his view of the house he knew inside.

‘We have a visitor, someone you should meet’ she explained opening the door. She let James and his large suitcase pass. Her eyes settled on it worryingly as he led the suitcase down the hall and up the stairs to her bedroom. He returned down the stairs changed into his shorts and a clean shirt, but his forehead was beaded with sweat. Francesca took a serious look at his face.

‘Cali’s boyfriend Antonio is here. Please be cool, alright?’ she said. She had no real idea how James might react.

‘I’m cool!’ he joked. Francesca smiled humourously.

‘He speaks quite good English, so you can talk to him, don’t give him any lectures, alright James. He’s a nice guy, okay?’ James gulped, he nodded trusting her judgement. She led James through the house to the lounge where Cali was lying lazily on the couch with Antonio. They were enjoying a private moment together in the sun: his hands were sliding underneath her top as he kissed her eagerly. James’ eyes flared dangerously wide at the sight. James cleared his throat loudly.

‘Dad!’ Cali sat up in an enormous rush. They had clearly not been lying horizontally together when Francesca had left them a moment ago. Cali recovered from shock with her hand to her chest.

‘I didn’t know you were coming!’ she exclaimed in surprise. Her mother’s face told her the same. Antonio looked horribly embarrassed of being caught with her by both her parents. But the brave man stood to shake James’ hand in welcome.

‘Mr Hetfield’ he began in a shaky Spanish accent. ‘I am Antonio, it is very nice to meet you’ he said awkwardly. His eyes took in James’ tattoos and James saw instantly that the penny had dropped—it was apparent Antonio was a Metallica fan. He looked at Cali in amazement, it was clear she had not shared the secret of her father’s identity with him. They stared at each other for a moment longer; Antonio’s mouth was dropped awkwardly open, while James’ piercing gaze terrified the young man that had dared to take his daughter’s virginity. Francesca intercepted their staring match.

‘James, come and see Marcella, she’s upstairs. Castor’s gone to the beach with some friends’ she explained leading him away. Francesca had dragged him by the arm into the hallway.

‘You let him just….’ James was completely lost for words.

‘He’s lovely!’ Francesca insisted. ‘He’s been teaching her Spanish, she’s almost as fluent as Marcella is now!’ she hissed in a whisper.

‘Is she on the pill?’ James growled urgently.

‘Yes, of course!’ Francesca smacked James’ arm for his insolence. ‘Just give him a chance!’ she scorned. She led him up the stairs to Marcella’s room.

‘Marcella?’ Francesca called out. She wanted to surprise her youngest daughter with her father’s spontaneous visit.

‘Yeah?’ she called out. James heard her music coming from behind the door.

‘Someone here to see you!’ James replied, spoiling the secret. Marcella jumped to open the door and leapt into her father’s arms.

‘Dad!’ she squealed happily, and Francesca smiled warmly leaving the two of them alone for a reunion.

James took Marcella for a walk to the shop for a cold drink.

‘Mom’s been expecting you’ she said cleverly. James wondered how, he had only decided himself to visit less than 14 hours ago.

‘It’s all through the papers and online Dad. Everyone knows that Hannah left you’ Marcella pointed out wisely.

‘Do you still read that stuff?’ James asked. They walked down the hot street each sipping a cold can of coke.

‘Yeah, sometimes’ Marcella shrugged her shoulders, but she was modifying her story for her father. Her google alerts on news stories about her father were now daily.

‘I’m sorry you found out that way’ he admitted.

‘I asked Mom if she’d have you back’ Marcella began. James wondered where her clever train of thought hoped to lead him.

‘She said, maybe’ Marcella tested. James paused for thought and they stopped on the pavement and faced each other.

‘Did she?’ James asked with interest.

‘Yep’ Marcella grinned.
