Obama actually doesn't necessarily support SOPA.

Quoted from the Huffington Post
"The White House released a statement on the anti-piracy bills on Jan. 14 that, while calling for some kind of legislation to be passed, echoed critics of the bills supported by Dodd and the movie industry. That hasn't sat well with Hollywood lobbyists like Dodd, who seemed stunned by the reversal in fortune for their prized legislation in the past week."

Obama doesn't support SOPA per say. And I don't know if he vetoed it, but if he did, it means he vetoed it passing, meaning that he would have struck the bill down. The US political system doesn't allow the President to unilaterally pass bills, but it does all the President to veto bills that have been passed through the Senate and House of Reps. (Edit: As far as I can remember...)

Regardless, I hope it doesn't pass. Even if I don't live in the states, I know it would affect me :(

But they have already proven today by shutting down Megaupload that they don't need the bill to pass to take action against filesharing sites.

If it makes you feel any better Anonymous, the "hacktivist" group hacked and shut down The Department of Justice, UMG, BMI and RIAA websites in retaliation for the closing of Megauploads and criminally charging I think at least two of the employees.

No, Obama can't stop SOPA per say, but he HAS come out and said that he will NOT support the bill. This has forced the supporters of the bill to stop dead in their tracks and decide to reconvene next month. Honestly, I think this will be stalled permanently, it has been several times already. Obama taught Constitutional Law years ago, so if anyone would know that someone's rights would be violated, it's him. If in the snowball's chance that it DID get passed, I'm quite certain that he'd veto it so fast that Hollywood's silicone heads would spin. Thanks to the net-wide protest the other day, quite a few senators have withdrawn their support (many had their phone lines and websites near blown up from the people calling in and e-mailing in protest). Personally, I think Obama has the Senate right where we want 'em: Running Scared.

In my own opinion, I think SOPA (and it's sister bill PIPA) are MASSIVE violations of Constitutional rights for Americans, and is the result of nothing more than Hollywood bitching and moaning about the fact that we got wise and figured out how to get around their brick walls when it came to accessing media. Yeah, Megaupload is down; but it's a foreign-run website that WAS marketing pirated media on a massive scale, so no real surprise here.

If anyone wants to read this for themselves, just Google "Obama stops SOPA" or something similar.

NOTE: The big blackout already occured, with an overwhelming response ^_~

Update: Sen. Harry Reid stopped the vote on the PIPA act, so it's stalled for now.

I think its fuckin retarded and in stead of bringing a butter knife to the table they bought a machete to the table

if this passes which i don't think it will..... piracy has been around for along time and i think they should focus on illegal downloading if they want to do something like that and there is so many people doing this without realizing (piracy).

If this passes the president is a retard and alot of people will be fined and refused to pay will be convicted.
