Chapter 26 The mood inside Consol Energy Center was electric as the Penguins prepared to face division leaders the New York Rangers, being in second place with only two points separating them as a win would leave them in a tie for first place. Spotlights moved over the ice as the players skated in shadows and light, the loudspeakersplaying Panama by Van Halen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-NshzYK9y0 "This is an important game, the Rangers are the best team in the conference", said Vero as Henri sucked on his pacifier and watched the ice curiously. He was dressed in a black and gold Penguins onesie with 29 and Fleury on the back, a black and gold knit cap on his dark brown fuzzy hair as he looked around with curious brown eyes. "He is looking just like his da, the wee lad. Do you think he is going to be a goalie too?", teased Ellen. "Perhaps, he likes to watch the games on TV. But it's too early to tell", said Vero. Marie smiled down at the baby boy as he sat contentedly on his mother's lap, sucking happily on his pacifier. Henri glanced in her direction and went back to looking at the ice, not seeming to find her interesting. The lights of the arena went back on as the music stopped, both teams preparing to face off. The referee dropped the puck as Sidney and Rangers center and captain Ryan Callahan prepared to get possession, Callahan winning the draw as the crowd booed. Callahan passed the puck to Marian Gaborik as the speedy Slovakian raced towards the goal. Marc got into position to defend his crease as he saw Gaborik unleash a wrist shot that he was able to block, the referee blowing his whistle as the teams prepared to face off again. The score was 1-1 in the third period with less than three minutes to go, the Penguins on a power play as Rangers winger Artem Ansimov was in the penalty box for hooking. Evgeni took a pass from James as he raced towards the goal, pursued by the Rangers defense as the crowd got to its feet. He fired a wrist shot that went past Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist as the sirens went off and the crowed roared with delight, the clock stopping temporarily as he was embraced by his teammates and he skated back to the bench to be replaced by Jordan. "I'll stop them, Geno", he vowed. There was now less than two minutes left as the teams prepared for another faceoff. Jordan was opposite Callahan as he prepared to get the puck, getting possession as he knew the defense would be guarding Marc. He saw that Lundqvist had been pulled for an extra attacker as he raced towards the empty goal, James and Max on the wing as they were pursued by the defense. He passed over to Max as he scored the empty-net goal, the sirens wailing as the crowd grew even louder. Marc held off the Rangers for the last minute as the buzzer rang throughout the arena to announce the end of the game, the team embracing each other as the Rangers dejectedly skated off the ice. The TV crew immediately came over onto the ice as the fans stayed to see who the stars of the game were going to be. "The number 3 star, Max Talbot!", said the announcer as the crowd cheered. "The number 2 star, Jordan Staal!", he said as the crowd got a bit louder. "And our number 1 star, Evgeni Malkin with two goals!", said the voice over the PA as the cheers grew so loud it almost raised the roof off the arena. Evgeni tried to catch his breath as Dan Potash of Pens TV came over with his microphone, the little bald man in his buttoned-down blue shirt and khaki pants looking insignificant next to the big Russian. "Geno, you scored two goals tonight and were the first star of the game, how does that feel?", he asked. "That feel very good, I score because I don't want overtime. But Jordan and Max have good game too, it's good to be tied in first place. We go to celebrate at Diesel", he replied as the crowd had a good laugh. "I'm too old for that, that and my wife will kill me. Congratulations on the game, Geno", said Dan as he went to interview Jordan and Max. "We are definitely going to celebrate", said James, taking a large swallow of orange Gatorade from the bottle. "Da, we in tie for first place. I got to shower, Ellen no like it if I stink", he joked as he stripped off his uniform and headed to the showers. Kris emerged from the showers and dried off as he changed into gray slacks and a black buttoned-down shirt, applying some gel to his hair and combing it. "Tanger, are you auditioning for GQ?", teased James as he buttoned his own shirt. "Non, they haven't called me yet, mon ami Anglais. And you're vain about your hair too", he joked. James just laughed as he applied gel and combed his thick, wavy dark hair. "I can't help it if I have sick hair, dude. But if ever get as bald as Dan, I'm not wearing a toupee, I'll just shave it off", he joked. "Maybe you will get lucky at Diesel, with Max and Jordan as your wingmen that will help", said Kris as he adjusted his tie. "Yeah, those two are awesome wingmen. The French dude and the big blond farmboy, great combination", he laughed. Kris finished dressing and texted Marie as he left the locker room, walking over to the family section. He smiled as she came over and gave him a hug, much to everyone's amusement. "Is Zhenya coming out soon, the little bald bloke is still talking with him?", asked Ellen. "Dan's interviewing Max now, we're all headed to Diesel to celebrate", he replied. "That sounds wonderful, but do not party so hard", teased Marie. Kris just laughed as he kissed the top of her head, pulling her close. "I will not, ma fille pays. We got the game with the Flyers in two days, if we lose that we are in big trouble", he joked as she pretended to pout. Evgeni saw Ellen as she gave him a hug and a quick peck on the lips. "How are you feeling, Number 1 star of the game?", she teased. "I am feeling very good, Ellen. We have fun at Diesel with everyone, we celebrate", he said as he took her by the hand and led her towards the players' lot. Evgeni opened the door of the silver BMW and helped her inside as he started the engine. He glanced over at her and smiled how beautiful she was, even in a simple outfit of jeans and a t-shirt in dark green Sutherland tartan, her long honey-blond hair falling around her shoulders and only pink lipstick as her makeup. "Do you have a crick in your neck, Zhenya?", she teased, her green eyes dancing with mischief. Evgeni blushed as he fiddled with the radio buttons. "Nyet, but you are so beautiful", he murmured. "You naughty boyo, flattery will nae get you anywhere", she giggled. "But it is truth, I not good at saying pretty things in English", he said shyly. Ellen leaned over and kissed his cheek.. "I didna mean to hurt your feelings, Zhenya. I was just having a wee bit of fun", she replied, turning up the volume on the radio and singing along to Dixieland Delight by Alabama: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9DqUXcYYyI Rollin' down a backwoods Tennessee by way One arm on the wheel Holdin' my lover with the other A sweet, soft, Southern thrill Worked hard all week, got a little jingle On a Tennessee Saturday night Couldn't feel better, I'm together With my Dixieland Delight Spend my dollar Parked in a holler 'Neath the mountain moonlight Hold her up tight Make a little lovin' A little turtle dovin' On a Mason-Dixon night Fits my life, oh so right My Dixieland Delight White tail buck deer munchin' on clover Red tail hawk sittin' on a limb A chubby old groundhog, croakin' bullfrog Free as the feelin' in the wind Home grown country girl gonna give me a whirl On a Tennessee Saturday night Lucky as a seven livin' in heaven With my Dixieland Delight Spend my dollar Parked in a holler 'Neath the mountain moonlight Hold her up tight Make a little lovin' A little turtle dovin' On a Mason-Dixon night Fits my life, oh so right My Dixieland Delight Spend my dollar Parked in a holler 'Neath the mountain moonlight Hold her up tight Make a little lovin' A little turtle dovin' On a Mason-Dixon night Fits my life, oh so right My Dixieland Delight Rollin' down a backwoods Tennessee by way One arm on the wheel Holdin' my lover with the other A sweet, soft, Southern thrill Worked hard all week, got a little jingle On a Tennessee Saturday night Couldn't feel better, I'm together With my Dixieland Delight Evgeni followed his teammates out of the lot towards the club in downtown Pittsburgh. It was a quick trip as there was little traffic at this hour, the valet taking their cars as they were ushered into the VIP lounge. The club was jumping as the sound system blared loud rap and techno music, the dance floor full of people grinding and dancing while the bar remained busy. The VIP area was located in a far corner of the club upstairs and guarded by bouncers, a waitress immediately coming over for their drinks. Max sat at the table and quickly turned to face the dance floor, checking out the girls as Jordan did the same. "We just got here and you're already looking to score?", teased Sidney. "Time waits for no man, mon capitan. And I think we deserve it", he laughed. Evgeni chuckled at his teammate as the waitress came over with their drinks. He took a sip of his vodka and watched as Ellen drank her Rob Roy, his mouth going dry as her lips touched the rim of the glass. He shook his head and finished his vodka, seeing her finish her own drink as he led her downstairs onto the dance floor. Kris and Marie were dancing nearby as the sound system played a slightly slower R&B number, smiling to himself when he saw Max and a blond in a red spandex dress grinding against each other. Ellen was feeling pretty good now, the alcohol just starting to take effect. She leaned against him and wrapped her arms around his thick neck, her body swaying against his. Evgeni felt a sudden rush of arousal as she gave him a coy little smile, her green eyes dancing with mischief. "You are bad girl, Ellen", he growled. Ellen just laughed as she moved against him, smiling triumphantly when she felt his erection pressing against her. "And you like it, Zhenya', she giggled. "Not here and it is too early, Ellen. We wait", he said huskily as she pretended to pout, but her lips turned up in a knowing smile as they continued to dance. |

Almost but not quite, ladies ![]() Chapter 27 "This is the last road trip before the playoffs and we have some traveling companions", laughed Max as Kris and Evgeni arrived at the airport along with Marie and Ellen. "Max, I'm surprised you didn't invite a lady along with us", teased Kris, putting an arm around Marie's shoulders as she leaned against him. Max sighed theatrically, an amused look in his blue eyes. ""f I had a lady with me, I would only break her heart as I cannot stop my roving eye. It is for the best", he said as everyone just laughed. "Superstar, we got to do good because if we win both games, we'll be the second seed in the conference, and if we lose we'll be the fourth seed, it's so tight in the standings. Don't you think second place is better?", teased Sidney. "Oui, mon capitan", said Max as he gave his captain a mocking salute. "But what are the odds of winning all three games, are they good teams?", asked Marie. "Both Calgary and Winnipeg are crap, that would be easy. But Vancouver are the best team in the Western Conference, that's going to be hard. Calgary is a lot of fun, there are cowboy bars and Cowboys is the big one, it very huge. You are going to like it", said Evgeni, smiling at the delighted look on Ellen's face. "Oui, mon ami Russe. Another good place is the Rose and Crown, it has so many beers and it is huge. Calgary is fun, period. Vancouver is a beautiful city right on the Pacific, I remember when we played there me and Luc would go out for drinks and he would show me around the city. Alexandre knew him well, he was Luc's best friend on the Canucks", said Kris, frowning. "Who is Alexandre?", asked Marie. "That's Alexandre Burrows, he plays for the Canucks. He was Luc's best friend on the team and he's a good friend of mine, I like to take the piss out of him because his Dad is an Englishman from London and his mama is French, there's not many French dudes named Burrows", laughed Kris. "Cool. Cowboys has some hot chicks. Shit, all we saw at Billy Bob's in Texas was fat chicks", said Jordan in disgust. James just shook his head and clapped the blond giant on the back. "Dude, I tried to tell you, Billy Bob's full of tourists, you go somewhere else and the girls are hotter. Native Texan women aren't the least bit ugly", he teased. "Guys, you better not party too hard at Cowboys", teased Sidney. "We know, Sid. And the coaches no want to see that, we can't be crazy", retorted Evgeni, gesturing towards the coaching staff on the other side of the waiting room. "Jordan, ta mere ne vous a jamais appris a parler avec une dame", chided Marie as Kris and Max tried not to laugh. "Huh? No parle French", he replied, his heavily Canadian-accented French making everyone burst into laughter. "Let's stop picking on Jordy and get on the place before it leaves without us", said Sidney as he calmed himself down and put on his best "captain's voice". "Flying on a charter is much nicer than going on a regular plane, ma fille pays. We have an XBox hooked up so we can all play Call of Duty, plus free booze", said Kris as they boarded the plane. "It cannot possibly have more alcohol than my father's bar. And don't be loud with the XBox, avoir un soin pour nous mesdames", she teased. "Guys, save it for when we get to Winnipeg. You can't join the Mile High Club because the coaches are going to make us skate suicides", laughed Jordan as James playfully punched his shoulder. "Sorry about that, ladies, but Jordy here needs to learn how to act around women. That's what happens when you grow up on a farm with no girls", he joked. "Merci, monsieur Neal", she replied graciously. The team boarded their charter flight and soon they were airborne in the skies above Pittsburgh and leaving the city behind. The OK was given as Sidney turned on the XBox and connected it to the TV screens around the cabin as it played Call of Duty, everyone getting out their controllers as they went around the business of killing bad guys. Marie saw that Ellen wore earplugs and a mask as she went to sleep while Evgeni played the game, taking out her Ipod and a copy of Orlando Furioso translated into French as she turned on the device and began to read, Kris joining his teammates in the game. She had the jazz playlist on shuffle as she began to read the classic medieval story of Charlemagne's knight and his obsessive love for the beautiful Cathay princess Angelica, the graceful Italian prose translating well into her native French. The plane landed at Winnipeg International Airport five hours later, the sun just starting to set as it was five o'clock over here. "We're staying at the Fort Garry Hotel, I heard it's supposed to be good. We never played here before, so looks like we're going to do some exploring", said Kris. "How come?", asked Marie. "The Winnipeg Jets used to be the Atlanta Thrashers but they were so bad they were sold to a group who moved them here. They are still crap, but at least they will have fans here, hardly anyone came to the games in Atlanta", said Kris. "Atlanta sucked, Max got mugged there after he left a bar across the street from the hotel. And the weather was awful, all humid and too warm. Atlanta sucks, period", said Jordan, making a face. "What is Winnipeg like?", asked Ellen. "Hell if I know, there's gotta be a decent bar around here", said Jordan with a shrug. "That means we can save the partying for Calgary then", said Sidney dryly. Everyone got their bags and boarded the bus to the hotel. The area immediately surrounding the airport was very flat wheatfields and grasslands that was monotonous as though they were in the middle of an ocean, the sky above turning from a brilliant blue to shades of orange and pink tinged with purple as the sun began its descent. Winnipeg appeared out of nowhere on the flat prairies, a city of modern glass buildings and modest skyscrapers made even taller on the prairie. It looked almost like a mirage, not unlike the Emerald City in Oz in the Wizard of Oz. The bus stopped and parked in the lot of the Fort Garry Hotel, the ornate multi-storied structure looking not unlike a Victorian train depot or a chateau plopped down in the large prairie city. "Wow, this place looks real fancy", said Jordan in awe. "You sound like a yokel, Jordan", teased James as he flipped him off. The interior matched the exterior, the lobby with a massive brown, burnt orange and dark purple Paisley rug and pale peach walls along with small copies of classical statuary and a bronze fountain shaped like a dolphin in the center. "This place is really nice, we usually stay at Hyatts and Sheratons but it's good to try something new", Kris chuckled as he opened the door to their room. Marie just nodded as she turned on the hallway light, opening her bag and taking out a few clothes. "Aren't you tired, that was a long flight", she asked. Kris just laughed and pulled her into his arms as they lay on the bed. "Non, I have been on longer flights, trust me. We have flown from Pittsburgh to the West Coast, places like Vancouver and California. And last year, we played an exhibition game in Stockholm, Sweden before the start of the season against a team of Swedish All-Stars, that was far", he chuckled. "Oui, merci beaucomp, Kris. What was that like?", she asked. Kris took her closer into his arms and kissed the top of her head as she leaned closer to him. "I liked it a lot, the people there are very nice and the city is beautiful. It's built on a lot of islands like Venice and there's little boats that go to the islands, but it's cold. We were there for a week and we did a lot of sightseeing, we saw the royal palace of the Swedish Royal Family and some of the museums and the zoo, some of the guys brought along their kids and they liked it. The only thing I didn't like was the food, though, Swedish food sucks. It's all fish and potatoes and they don't season it either, we ended up eating a lot of Italian food", he laughed. "That does sound assez mauvais, Kris", said Marie. She sighed as he kissed her forehead and he eyes widened a bit when she felt him reach inside the unbuttoned top of her blouse to touch her breast as he just smiled at her. "I think our friends can wait", he chuckled. Marie said nothing as she loosened his tie and unbuttoned his shirt, kissing him as her small hands explored his muscular chest. Kris growled low in his throat as he returned the kiss, his tongue probing between her lips as he pulled her atop him. He broke off the kiss and removed his blouse as he tossed it aside, followed by her skirt as he reached for her bra. "So beautiful", he murmured huskily, his lips fastening onto a pouting nipple as she moaned his name. Kris chuckled triumphantly against her breast as he reached down to remove her panties, seeing her part her legs as he gently stroked her. Marie gasped softly at the sensation as he toyed with her, feeling his erection straining against his pants. Kris reluctantly let go of her as he quickly removed his pants and then his boxers, smiling at the hungry look in he blue eyes. He cursed in French when Marie stroked him before taking him into her mouth, her black hair falling onto his thighs. "Merde, qui se sent bien", he growled as she continued to suck him. "I think that's enough, ma fille belle pays", he growled, lifting her face from his erection. Kris lay on his back and smiled as Marie straddled his body and guided him inside her, seeing her close her eyes and sigh in pleasure as he filled her. His big hands were on her hips as she began to move on him, his big tanned hands a striking contrast to her pale smooth skin. "Ride me, ma belle fille", he groaned. Marie followed his orders as a soft moan escaped her lips, feeling him press against her sensitive spot as he gripped her hips. She felt the pleasure rise and continued riding him, each passing moment stoking the flames even hotter as he urged her on. Kris was oblivious to everything except Marie riding him, feeling his own climax fast approaching. He could hear her soft whimpers as she neared her peak, the little hitch in her throat giving it away. She closed her eyes and sobbed his name as the climax overcame her, her body stiffening as he thrust one last time into her body and released into her warmth. Kris pulled her close and kissed the top of her head as she snuggled against him, her body feeling boneless and satiated from her climax. "Are you tired now, Kristoffer Letang?", she teased. "I love it when you use my name like that, ma fille pays. We will get out of this bed, once I no longer feel as though I have just completed a workout", he teased as she just giggled. |

Chapter 28 "You're looking pretty good there, Tanger. You guys get busy?", teased Jordan, giving them a mocking salute with his beer bottle. "You and Max have one-track minds, I swear. This is why you need a girlfriend", laughed Kris as he took a sip of his Macallan. They were at the Crown and Scepter in downtown in Winnipeg near the hotel, drinking. It was a British pub that was on the lower level of a club, a regular drinking beer downstairs and an upstairs lounge with big-screen TV's showing American channels like ESPN as well as the local sports channel which showed a Manitoba Moose Junior hockey game. The walls were plain but were otherwise adorned with vintage Winnipeg Jets memorabilia from the original incarnation of the team and various British flags and coats of arms, a jukebox in the corner playing Ladies Love Outlaws by Waylon Jennings: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YqCMLfTrhQ Bessie was a lovely child from West Tennessee Leroy was an outlaw wild as a mink One day she saw him starin' and it chilled her to the bone And she knew she had to see that look on a child of her own 'Cause ladies love outlaws like babies love stray dogs Ladies touch babies like a banker touches gold And outlaws touch the ladies Somewhere deep down in their soul Linda was a lady blond and built to last Benny was a no good guitar picker runnin' from his past She heard all of his songs tellin' nothin' but bad news But she made her mind up to try to get him, win or lose Ladies love outlaws like babies love stray dogs Ladies touch babies like a banker touches gold And outlaws touch the ladies Somewhere deep down in their soul Jessi like the Cadillacs and diamonds on her hands Waymore had a reputation as a lady's man Late one night a light of love finally gave a sign Jessi parked her Cadillac and took her place in line 'Cause ladies love outlaws like babies love stray dogs Ladies touch babies like a banker touches gold And outlaws touch the ladies Somewhere deep down in their soul Ladies love outlaws like babies love stray dogs Ladies touch babies like a banker touches gold And outlaws touch the ladies Somewhere deep down in their soul "I bet the girls are having a good time, reckon girls don't like these kinds of places", said Jordan as he drained his beer. Evgeni came over from the bathroom and found his seat at the table. "I got text from James, he on the way. Should we call girls, there a lot creepy guys in clubs", he said as the waitress set down a beer. "Geno, relax. The girls are probably having a good time without us, sitting at a bar drinking is not fun for a lot of girls", said Kris. "Yeah Geno, chill. They're big girls and and can take care of themselves", said Jordan. "Hey guys, my mom decided to call just as I was about to leave", said James as he got into the booth besides Kris. "No problem, bro. I know what you mean, my mom's the same", said Jordan as James ordered a beer from the waitress. "It's good to know, mon ami Anglais", said Kris. He frowned when the jukebox played You're Still the One by Shania Twain as the others made faces at the overwrought country ballad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNZH-emehxA&ob=av2e "Kris, change this shit", said James. Kris finished his drink and walked over the jukebox as he flipped through the selections, placing several dollars in the machine as it played Whiskey in the Jar by Metallica. "Sweet, Tanger", said James approvingly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLsMvGCFtOU As I was going over the Cork and Kerry Mountains I saw Captain Farrell and his money he was countin' I first produced my pistol and then produced my rapier I said "Stand and deliver or the devil he may take ya" I took all of his money and it was a pretty penny I took all of his money yeah and I brought it home to Molly She swore that she loved me no never would she leave me But the devil take that woman, yeah, for you know she tricked me easy Musha rain dum-a-doo dum-a-da Whack for my daddy-o Whack for my daddy-o There's whiskey in the jar-o Being drunk and weary I went to Molly's chamber Takin' my Molly with me, but I never knew the danger For about six or maybe seven in walked Captain Farrell I jumped up, fired my pistols, and I shot him with both barrels Musha rain dum-a-doo dum-a-da, ha, ya Whack for my daddy-o Whack for my daddy-o There's whiskey in the jar-o Yeah, whiskey, yo, whiskey... Oh-oh, ya Now some men like a fishin', but some men like the fowlin' Some men like to hear, to hear the cannonball a-roarin' But me, I like sleepin', `specially in my Molly's chamber But here I am in prison, here I am with a ball and chain, yeah Musha rain dum-a-doo dum-a-da, ha, ya Whack for my daddy-o Whack for my daddy-o There's whiskey in the jar-o Whiskey in the jar-o Musha rain dum-a-doo dum-a-da Musha rain dum-a-doo dum-a-da, hey Musha rain dum-a-doo dum-a-da Musha rain dum-a-doo dum-a-da, ya "Merci, mon ami Anglais. I don't mind country music, but I can't stand Shania Twain, even if she is hot. My mom likes her, but she sucks", said Kris. "If she sucks, Ellen probably don't like it.", said Evgeni as he took a sip of his beer. "She doesn't, Ellen doesn't like crap like Faith Hill and those blond chicks like Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert, they are hot but they suck. Metallica are far more awesome", said Kris as everyone nodded. "You know that if we get the second seed, we'll be playing the Panthers and if we get the third we play Carolina. Which do you prefer?", asked James as he drank his second beer. "Second seed, dude. I don't want to face Eric in the first round. Hell, I don't want to face my brothers in the playoffs, period. It's gonna be tough for my parents on whom to cheer for", said Jordan. "That's a big problem, dude. Lucky my brothers don't play. Anyways, I'd rather go to Miami, it's gorgeous down there", said James. "We won't be partying during the playoffs, mes amis", said Kris as as everyone laughed. "Our blokes are having a good time without us, I reckon", said Ellen as she sipped her Rob Roy. "But they are just going to drink? I hope they don't drink that much", said Marie, raising an eyebrow. "Don't worry, they know better than that. And we are having a good time", laughed Ellen. The women were at Myst near the hotel, the club not as trendy as something in Montreal or New York but not bad. The dance floor was crowded with people dancing to loud R&B music spun by the DJ as lights overhead swirled around in vivid colors. Marie and Ellen were seated at a table away from the dance floor and chatting, having a girls' night out. "You really need to wear purple more often, Marie, it suits you. And while I understand why they play this bloody awful music, does not mean I like it", said Ellen with a smile. "Merci, Ellen. But I didn't see any jazz clubs around here, it was either that or stay at the hotel", said Marie as she sipped her Sidecar. She wore a simple dark purple mulberry dress and matching heels with her dark hair loose around her shoulders, the purple bringing out her fair skin and blue eyes. "This is silly, let's go dance", said Ellen as she finished her drink. "By ourselves?", asked Marie. "With each other, girls do this all the time", giggled Ellen as she led her onto the dance floor. The sound system now played Born That Way by Lady Gaga as they started dancing with each other, several other women doing the same. "This is fun, Marie. Just pretend I'm a bloke", laughed Ellen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Lps7_Nxj3Y It doesn't matter if you love him, or capital H-I-M Just put your paws up 'cause you were Born This Way, Baby My mama told me when I was young We are all born superstars She rolled my hair and put my lipstick on In the glass of her boudoir "There's nothing wrong with loving who you are" She said, "'Cause he made you perfect, babe" "So hold your head up girl and you'll go far, Listen to me when I say" I'm beautiful in my way 'Cause God makes no mistakes I'm on the right track, baby I was born this way Don't hide yourself in regret Just love yourself and you're set I'm on the right track, baby I was born this way Oh there ain't no other way Baby I was born this way Baby I was born this way Oh there ain't no other way Baby I was born- I'm on the right track, baby I was born this way Don't be a drag -Just be a queen [x3] Don't be! Give yourself prudence And love your friends Subway kid, rejoice your truth In the religion of the insecure I must be my self, respect my youth A different lover is not a sin Believe capital H-I-M (Hey hey hey) I love my life I love this record and Mi amore vole fe yah (Love needs faith) Don't be a drag, just be a queen Whether you're broke or evergreen You're black, white, beige, chola descent You're Lebanese, you're orient Whether life's disabilities Left you outcast, bullied, or teased Rejoice and love yourself today 'cause baby you were born this way No matter gay, straight, or bi, lesbian, transgendered life, I'm on the right track baby, I was born to survive. I'm on the right track baby I was born this way hey! I was born this way hey! I was born this way hey! I'm on the right track baby I was born this way hey! Marie blushed as she and Ellen danced, facing each other as they moved to the music. Ellen looked stunning in a pale lime-green spaghetti strap dress with a short clingy skirt and matching sandals, her honey-blond hair loose past her shoulders. She felt the brandy start to work as they danced, feeling a lot more comfortable now that they weren't the only other single women dancing there. The song ended as Ellen led them back to their table and ordered more drinks. "I think our men are going to be in for a treat tonight", Ellen giggled. Marie nodded in thanks as she took a sip of her Sidecar. "Ellen that is a rude thing to say, and then Geno will not be able to skate well for the game", she teased. "That is just an old wives' tale, Marie. It would be interesting to find out", she laughed. "What do you mean?", asked Marie. Ellen took a sip of her drink and became serious for a moment. "We haven't slept together yet, Marie, it's not good to rush into that. Besides, it's been a while", she replied, her cheeks turning pink. "How long exactly?", asked Marie. Ellen twirled the swizzle stick in her drink. "Five years and we were both drunk. I guess you could say I'm rusty", she said with a weak chuckle. "Are you going to seduce Geno or is he going to do it?", asked Marie. "I'll give him a little nudge, he's a big fellow and I don't want to make him feel uncomfortable. But I am looking forward to it", she laughed. Marie had a mischievous look in her blue eyes as she took a sip of her drink. "Why don't you text him and tell him he has a surprise?", she asked. "Aye, good idea. I'll do it before he gets whiskey dick", she giggled as she took out her phone. "Good night Geno, and enjoy your surprise", teased Jordan as the men got off the elevator at their floor. "Da, you jealous because you no have girlfriend", he retorted as he walked over to the room. Evgeni took the kecyard from his wallet and slid it into the slot as the green light flashed, opening the door and stepping inside. He glanced up and his mouth went dry at the sight that greeted him. "Like what you see, Zhenya?", she purred seductively. "Da", he replied, momentarily speechless. Ellen was reclining in the bed wearing a black lace corset held together with black ribbons and stockings with matching garters, the corset clinging to her slim body and emphasizing her cleavage with her long honey blond hair loose around her shoulders. Ellen gave him a seductive smile and crooked her finger as he made his way to the bed, an amused look in her green eyes as she hastily removed his t-shirt and tossed it aside. Evgeni mounted the bed and took her into his arms and captured her lips in a searing kiss as she clung to him and returned the kiss. He growled low in his throat and his tongue eagerly parted her lips, reaching for the tie at the shoulder of her corset and loosening the knot. He broke the kiss as his deft fingers untied the bows holding up the corset, pulling down the black lace as his eyes turned black with lust. Ellen was momentarily frightened by his intensity bu he leaned over and kissed her softly, his hand gently on the base of her of her neck as he kissed her. She sighed against his lips and felt him lower the corset further, his lips leaving hers and kissing down her throat, his lips on the swell of her breast causing her heart to skip a beat. Evgeni reached behind her back for the stays of the corset and unlaced them, lowering the black lace down her body and smiling when he saw she wore nothing but a black lace thong. "Bad girl, you plan this", he teased. "And I know you like it, Zhenya", she laughed. Evgeni chuckled and his breath came out in a hitch as she reached for the front of his jeans, unbuttoning the top and lowering the zipper as he got out of them and kicked the pants aside. His breath came out in a hiss and he cursed softly in Russian when Ellen began to stroke him through his boxers, a sly little smile on her lips when she saw his reaction. He gently took her hands off his erection and reached for the waistband of her thong, slipping it off and his eyes glowing with lust. Ellen leaned over and kissed him as she reached under his boxers to touch him, hearing him growl against her lips. Evgeni broke the kiss and slid her hands away as he removed the shorts and they fell to the floor, his hand resting on her hip as she leaned against his shoulder. He kissed her again as his hand reached up to cup her breast, smiling against her lips when he felt the nipple harden at his touch. His lips left hers and fastened onto her breast as she sighed, her fingers running through his thick dark hair. Each little flick of his tongue and touch of his lips made the desire pool in her belly as she kept his face to her breasts, soft moans escaping her lips. Ellen gasped in surprise when she felt him part her legs and stroke her aroused flesh. "Very nice", he murmured huskily. Ellen just leaned against him and sighed raggedly as his long fingers teased her aroused flesh, his lips pressed against her throat. Evgeni eased his fingers from her body and she made a little sound of protest, a knowing smile on his face as carefully eased her down on the bed. "You will like this", he said. Ellen looked up at her lover as he parted her legs and lowered his face between them, her breath stuck in her throat when she realized what he planned. Her body tensed with anticipation when she felt his lips on her, his tongue giving her little lick as she let out the breath she'd been holding, he eyes nearly popping open as he started licking her in earnest. Ellen moaned at the sensation as her fingers clutched onto the blanket, gasping when his tongue found her sensitive spot. The desire in her belly grew ever hotter with every little touch and each passing second, her breathing coming in harsh little gasps. Everything finally came to a head as Ellen stiffened and moaned his name, the pleasure crashing over her as she came. Ellen lay back on the bed and smiled weakly at him, his head resting against her stomach as she stroked his hair. "Unbelievable", she murmured. "That is nothing, Ellen", he chuckled. Ellen could only watch as he raised his body only to lay atop her, kissing her lips as she parted her legs. She sighed against his lips and wrapped her arms around his neck as he started to enter her body, her kiss growing deeper as he moved inside her body. She broke the kiss and her eyes went wide when she felt him bottom out inside her body, staying still for a moment before he began to thrust inside her body. "Oh Zhenya", she moaned as she tightened her grip on his shoulders. "Da, I know you like", he groaned. Evgeni relished the feel of her body and continued thrusting into her body as she clung tighter to him, feeling her legs wrap around his waist as she moaned his name. He felt her close to her peak as he felt close himself, thrusting harder and faster into her body as she gasped loudly. Ellen felt everything just burst as the pleasure overwhelmed her senses, barely aware that Evgeni had thrust one last time into her body and released into her as he took her into his arms. Ellen's senses finally came back to normal as her vision became focused, leaning into his embrace with a satisfied smile on her face. "Lucky I got text, that was a great surprise", he chuckled. "Aye, it was Marie's idea, she is a smart girl. I will have to buy her a drink", she giggled. "Hah, that is good idea, she is smart girl. Good night, Ellen", he said as he kissed her cheek. |

Chapter 29 The MTS Center in downtown Winnipeg was sold-out as the rabid fans came out to cheer the second incarnation of the beloved Winnipeg Jets, the stands a sea of blue, gray and purple only broken up by the occasional vintage Jets jersey from the 80's. The loudspeakers blared Rock Star by Nickelback as the players did the pregame skate under the dim lights: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmeUuoxyt_E&ob=av2n Kris skated in a small, tight circle near the Penguins' goal as he looked ahead and saw his forwards and the Jets players on the other end. The lights turned back on as the referee prepared to drop the puck at center ice, Sidney and Jets' center Nik Antropov. The puck was dropped as Sidney won the faceoff and and hurried towards the Jets' goal as boos from the Winnipeg faithful rained down on them. Jets goalie Ondrej Pavelec blocked his shot and trapped the puck with his pads as the referee blew the whistle to stop play, the next faceoff prepared as the Jets won this one and skated towards the Penguins' side of the rink. Kris had seen them win the faceoff and skate towards their end as he placed himself near the goal along with Mat Niskanen to make a screen in front of Marc, reaching out with his stick and grabbing the puck from Jets' winger Evander Kane and skating towards the blue line as he passed it to Sidney. He skated back towards the Penguins' end and smiled grimly as the Jets' fans booed, the boos growing ever louder as Sidney passed the puck to Max and then Frenchman got the puck past Pavelec for the goal as the fans booed so loud it almost made the rink quake with the sound. The score was still 1-0 Penguins as the horn blared throughout the arena signaling the end of the period. The fans slowly trickled out of their seats and headed towards the concession stands and the bathrooms while the players got off the ice and headed towards the dressing room. Kris followed his teammates into the tunnel leading to the visitors dressing room, feeling the blades of his skates against the concrete floor. He had a sensation he'd been doing this before as a tingling sensation formed in the back of his neck, the only sound his blades against the concrete. Kris had a fleeting glimpse of another tunnel like this, except it was considerably older and the players wore less padding and no helmets, all of them sporting white Canadiens jerseys. "You okay, Tanger?", asked Jordan, giving him a funny look. Kris blushed as he made his way towards the fridge and got two bottles of orange Gatorade, tossing one to him. "Ah, it was nothing. I just needed a drink", he replied, twisting off the top and taking a large gulp. "Okay dude", he replied with a shrug. Kris sighed in relief as he sat on the stool and in front of his locker and drank the Gatorade, not wanting to explain to the big blond center about his vision. He continued drinking Gatorade and made himself pay attention to the coaches as they diagrammed plays from the first period on a white board. Kris was relieved as the buzzer signaled the end of the game, the Penguins having won by a score of 2-1. "At least the flight into Calgary isn't going to take that long, maybe we can still hit Cowboys if it's still open", said Jordan as he stripped off his uniform and tossed it aside. "I don't think so, mon ami Nederlandais. Besides, we ought to rest when we get to the hotel", said Kris. "That's for you guys if your girlfriends don't wear you out, dude", he laughed as Kris playfully flipped him off. The team quickly showered and changed as the staff got their equipment ready for the flight to Calgary. "It's just as well that we're flying, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and some of Alberta is flat and boring as hell", said James as they waited to board the charter. "What's it like?", asked Marie. "Boring, flat and dull as heck, ma'am. I hated when we had to play teams out on the prairie in juniors, there's nothing out there except wheat and silos", he replied. Kris gave him a look and put an arm around Marie. "Whoa, dude. I don't poach, Mom taught me better than that", said James, putting his hands up in mock-distress. "Je sais, Nailer. It is a French thing", he chuckled. "I know, my cousin is dating a French dude from Ottawa and he's got a little jealous streak but he's a good dude, otherwise I'd kill him", he laughed. "Non, it is a male thing to be so protective and macho of the women", drawled Ellen as everyone laughed. Everyone calmed down a bit as the coaches began to lead everyone onto the plane. "We'll be in Calgary in two hours, it'll only be about midnight", said Jordan to no one in particular. The flight was quiet as most of the team and others had fallen asleep, the plane flying over the plains for southern Manitoba and Saskatchewan and Alberta. The farms and plains and wheat fields seemed totally free of humans except for the occasional little town seen only with a few lights coming from the houses, as though it was the blackest sky and tiniest stars on the ground. The tallest structures were the grain silos and water towers on the prairies, the lights from various aircraft shining down on the aluminum exteriors of the former as the flight continued westwards. They arrived at Calgary International Airport a little less than two hours later as everyone got off and headed to the bus carrying them to the hotel, the equipment guys getting all the stuff and their luggage onto the bus. Even in the darkness, the foothills of the Rockies could be seen in the distance, dark purple shapes against an ink-black sky. The city lights beckoned as the bus made its way down the highway towards Calgary, the bustling cowtown of south Alberta by the Bow River so very different from the flat plains they had flown ever just before. "Shit, it's too late to go to Cowboys. That place was awesome", said Jordan as he glanced down at his phone. "We just got a morning skate tomorrow, we'll go tomorrow night, dude. And everyone's tired", chided James. The parked in front of the Hyatt Regency as everyone got off and headed straight towards their rooms. "Everyone go right to bed, you'll be fined if you show up hungover tomorrow", said the coach once they had checked in. "Calgary is a bloody dull place during the day, I canna wait until our men come back from practice and we go out later", said Ellen as her and Marie walked inside Chinook Center, the only mall within Calgary city limits. "Oui, I thought Calgary had that big mall", said Marie. "No, that's Edmonton. I do want to see that bloody Cowboys place, it sounds sodding awesome. Anyplace place that big with country music is all right withe me", said Ellen with a laugh. Marie nodded as the two women entered and H&M at the mall. The ubiquitous clothes store was half-empty this morning as a sales clerk straightened a rack of clothes and the hidden speakers played soft ambient music. "This is why I prefer the little shops", said Ellen, eying the dull clothes. "Then why are we here?", asked Marie. "'Tis because there aren't any other decent clothes shops here, I was expecting more Western stuff here. If we are going to Cowboys, we ought to go in style", laughed Ellen. Marie had an idea as she took out her phone and and typed in something as some results came through. "There is a place that sells Western boots and another that sells hats on the 10th Ave SW, what do you think?", she asked. "That sounds bloody good, Marie. Let's get moving then", said Ellen as she led them out of the store. The Alberta Boot Company was a two-story building that contained a small shoe store upstairs and the factory downstairs. The various styles of cowboy boots ranged from those for everyday wear and to ones embroidered with beads and tassels made from exotic hides such as snakeskin, alligator and kangaroo. "I didn't know they made boots from snake", said Marie, sounding unsure if this was a good thing. "Yes ma'am, snakeskin boots are really good, fancy and durable. Are you French?", asked the bald middle-aged clerk in Wranglers and patterned snakeskin boots. "Oui monsieur. I have never heard of boots made from snakeskin before", she replied with a little chuckle. "Our boyfriends are taking us to Cowboys later and we ought to dress the part", said Ellen. "All right. We can do custom boots but reckon they won't be ready in time. Just let me know if you ladies need anything", said the clerk. "I suppose since we're going dancing, we ought to have comfortable boots", said Ellen. "I do hope they have boots in my size, I am a size 5", said Marie as she looked at a pair of brown suede boots. "Bloody hell, you have small feet. I'm a size 7 but I have an extra toe, lucky me", said Ellen as she took a pair of disposable socks from a box and put them on try on the boots. Marie looked at a few pairs as she tried to find one in her size. She sighed in relief when she saw an attractive pair in dark purple suede with silver beads that came in her size, her smile growing wider when she saw they fit perfectly. "I'll take those", she said as the clerk nodded and wrapped them in a box. "Bloody good choice, Marie", said Ellen as she placed a pair of black suede boots with high heels on the counter. "I swear this is going to be a fine place, there's plenty of sexy chicks here", said James reassuringly as they entered Cowboys. "Dude, I better believe it", laughed Jordan as a greeter led them to a booth in the corner. Jordan, James, Kris, Marie, Evgeni, Ellen and Max were at Cowboys, the legendary honky-tonk nightclub in downtown Calgary. It consisted of two levels with the lower level containing tables and boots surrounding a massive dance floor which was crowded with folks line-dancing and a bar taking up one whole side. An adjacent room had a few pool tables and a mechanical bull that was being ridden by a fat guy in a Flames jersey who whooped and hollered like he was in a rodeo. The upper level looked down onto the dance floor and had its own bar and it was more for people who wanted to drink in relative peace. "A round of Big Rock", Max told the waitress. "That's the best Alberta beer, but the beer in Vancouver is even better", said James. "Then you have not tried Maudite or Le Fin du Monde, monsieur Neal", teased Marie as Kris and Max tried not to laugh. "Oui, ma fille pays. I haven't drunk Molson or Labatt since juniors, that's just beer-flavored water", said Kris dismissively. "Dude, next time we play Toronto, I am taking you to Smokeless Joe or Mill Street Brewery. Smokeless Joe has over 250 beers on tap and the Brewery makes awesome wheat beer and fruit ales. The menu at Smokeless Joe is a book and they got great bands", said James as the waitress came by with their beers. "C'est magnifique, Nailer. But not too much, else you get a beer gut", laughed Max. "Then drink vodka, it not make you fat. When you retire, you drink a lot of beer and get a beer gut", said Evgeni, taking a large swallow of beer and nodding in approval. Marie took a small sip of her beer. "Not bad at all, but Maudite is still the best", she chuckled. "That's one thing I miss about Thunder Bay, there's this huge-ass sauna run by a Finnish dude and they sell Karhu. It's a strong Finnish beer and it means bear, good stuff. The sauna is kind of dumb, sitting in a room naked with a bunch of dudes and loads of steam, but the beer is awesome", said Jordan as he drained the beer in one gulp. "I'd like to try that. There's a beer from Orkney in Scotland called Skullsplitter that has got a lot of alcohol. And us Scots also make heather ale, that's bloody good", said Ellen. "Maybe they sell it on Amazon, I've never seen it before", said James as he finished his beer. After a few beers, everyone was feeling pretty good. "Let's go dance", said Kris. The DJ spun Rock my World Little Country Girl by Brooks and Dunn as the group joined the people already on the dance floor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHi8osKQzYA She's got a T-Top Camaro with a scoop on the hood And two big speakers blasting Johnny B. Goode Looking so sweet it oughta be a crime She plays with my heart and messes with my mind Acts like Madonna but she listens to Merle Rock my world little Country girl She wears snakeskin boots made by Calvin Klein And cheap sunglasses from the five and dime All the other girls in school they give her dirty looks She got an "A" in math and never cracked a book Sure looks good in her denim and pearls Rock my world little Country girl Rock my world Drag me out on the floor Dance with me till I can't dance anymore One-step, two-step, get in a line I gotta find a way to make you mine I tell her that I love her but it ain't enough She says I got to learn to loosen up Get a little wild on Saturday night But make sure she's home before the mornin' light Sunday she's all ribbons and curls Rock my world little Country girl Rock my world little Country girl "Just follow what everyone else is doing", said Kris. The men were in one line and the women in another copying the movements. While Kris and Marie and Ellen and Evgeni faced each other, Jordan, James and Max found themselves facing strangers as they danced to the 90's country hit. "Looks like the Superstar is is working his magic", laughed Kris. The song had ended while the DJ took a break, Max already putting the moves on a tall, thin brunette in tight jeans and a red halter top with whom he faced earlier while dancing. "Nice, let's hope they don't make too much noise", laughed James. Jordan nodded in agreement, his attention going towards a tall blond in a denim skirt and a tank top wearing cowboy boots. Everyone watched with amusement as he went over to the girl and she just poured her shot of tequila on his shirt, saying she didn't date enemy players. "Dude, this is Flames territory, chicks here don't go with enemy players", said James sympathetically. "Now you tell me, Nailer", he muttered, smelling the tequila and hoping it didn't stick to his shirt. |

Chapter 30 "Cheer up, everyone. We still got one game left to go and we're still in second place", said the coach as they prepared to board the flight to Vancouver. "Yeah, that sucked we lost but we gotta be positive and I hope another chick doesn't dump tequila on my head", said Jordan dryly. Kris nodded in agreement as he took out his phone and saw the text from Alexandre Burrows, replying as he sent it back. "We are staying with Alexandre and his wife Nancy at their condo in Yaletown, he just sent me a text and I texted him back. I got permission from the coaches, but that doesn't mean I'm going to be easy on him", he laughed. "What is Yaletown?", asked Marie. "It's a neighborhood in Vancouver near the harbor, it's great. There's a lot of shops and good restaurants and galleries, plus it's close to downtown. Alexandre and Nancy are great people, I've known him since Juniors and you will like them", he replied. The team boarded the plane and soon they had taken off above Calgary on their way towards British Columbia and Vancouver. The first part of the flight took them over the Rockies as the jagged peaks were barely visible below, the highest summits still covered in snow. The Rockies gradually leveled out as they flew over the fertile farmlands of eastern British Columbia, past huge apple orchards and wheat fields and pastures. The plane landed at Vancouver International Airport as everyone prepared to leave. Kris took Marie by the hand and led her out of the plane as he waved goodbye to his teammates, seeing his good friend Alexandre Burrows as the two men embraced. "Bonjour et Bienvenue, mon frere. And is this your lady?", he asked, lifting her hand to his lips and giving it a gentle kiss. "Alex, this is my girlfriend Marie-Lisette Gagnon. Marie, this is my friend Alexandre Burrows", he said. "Bonjour, mademoiselle. Nancy is back home, she insisted on cooking for you guys, my wife is a stubborn woman", he chuckled, his otherwise perfect French spoken with a slight British accent. Alexandre was a tall, handsome man with slightly long dark brown hair and brown eyes over a somewhat off-center nose that had been broken, wearing jeans and a Rust in Peace t-shirt under a blue hoodie. "Your accent is British, monsieur Burrows", said Marie. Alexandre laughed good-naturedly. "Oui, mademoiselle Gagnon. My father is an Englishman from London and my mama is French, he is from Hackney and he came to Canada when he was eighteen where he met my mother. He speaks French too but his accent is worse than mine", he laughed. Kris and Marie followed Alexandre towards the parking lot as he took a set of keys from his pocket and opened the doors of a black Toyota SUV that looked well-used. "We go to the mountains a lot and many of them have dirt roads, having an SUV is important around here if you don't want to destroy your car", he explained. The area surrounding the airport was nothing more than the dull suburban sprawl of identical concrete houses and condos, strip malls and parking lots found anywhere, but when Vancouver emerged it was quite a shock. The city on the edge of the Pacific gleamed like a queen's tiara with all the lights coming from the buildings downtown, some of the lights reflecting on the harbor. Many of the streets were still buzzing with clubgoers as the revelers went on pub crawls or to another nightclub, in spite of the late hour. Alexandre entered the subterranean parking garage of his building after the guard waved them through, parking the truck as he led them towards the elevator and up to the tenth floor. "Wait until you see the view", said Kris as Alexandre just laughed. He led them into the condo as his wife Nancy embraced him and Kris, shaking Marie's hand. "Bienvenue a Vancouver, Kris. And you must be the girl he keeps talking so much about", she said in her warm French accent. Nancy was tall and slim with long dark brown hair and kind brown eyes, wearing gray yoga pants and a plain white t-shirt as she smiled at them. "Oui, madame Burrows. I am Marie Gagnon", she replied. "Please call me Nancy, madame Burrows makes me sound like an old schoolteacher", she laughed as Alexandre poured them each a glass of Pernod, the pale green cloudy liqueur a milder form of its much stronger cousin absinthe. "I made tortellini alla bolognase and a salad, there is this wonderful Italian store nearby where they make their own pasta and this is my grandmother's recipe, she was from Rimini in the province of Romagna", said Nancy proudly as she checked on the food. "I married a hot French and Italian girl, the guys on the team love her cooking", laughed Alexandre as he poured them each another glass of Pernod. Marie nodded in thanks and took a sip of the Pernod. The cloudy green liqueur had a sweet, strong licorice taste and a concentrated amount of alcohol, not unpleasant but not familiar either. "I don't think my father sells this, a lot of people mistake this for absinthe and that's illegal", she said. "Absinthe is illegal, it's supposed to make you trip like LSD. I don't touch that stuff", said Alexandre. "Her dad owns a bar, she knows all that stuff", said Kris proudly as Marie giggled. "Tres bien, Tanger. And I hear Nancy saying the food is ready", said Alexandre as they went into the dining room and he rinsed out the cups. Everyone sat at the table as Alexandre opened a bottle of red Sangiouese and poured everyone a glass. "Too bad about the Calgary game, those guys love to play spoiler", he said as he passed the salad bowl. "Oui, Alex. And we lost in a shootout, that's the worst. But we are in second place in the conference, unless there is something freaky, we are going to the playoffs", laughed Kris. "We're in first place in our division and first in the conference, we might be the only team in our division going to the playoffs. But let us talk about other things, it is not fair to les dames", he chuckled. "Merci, Alexandre. So Marie, how is your first road trip going? I hope the men are acting like gentlemen", said Nancy with a little laugh. Marie chuckled as she took a sip of wine. "It is very interesting, I've barely been out of Pittsburgh except for the All-Star Game in Ottawa. I have been with Ellen mostly, she is Geno's girlfriend and a lot of fun. We went to a club together and danced, we also bought cowboy boots", she said, gesturing to the purple cowboy boots on her feet. "Yeah, Ellen is a real country girl. She's from Scotland and loves country music, Geno adores her. It's great to see two of my best friends dating", laughed Kris. When the dinner was over and the dishes in the dishwasher, Alexandre poured everyone a glass of Framboise as they sipped the raspberry brandy. "I am tired, Kris", said Marie as she finished the brandy. "Okay, bonne nuit", he said, giving her a quick kiss before she went towards the guestroom. "I am going to bed too, you guys keep it down here", said Nancy. "All right, bonne nuit", said Alexandre. Kris said nothing as he sipped his brandy. "So Tanger, did you tell her about Luc?", asked Alexandre. "Oui, Alex. It's not something you get over easily, and it was stupid. He was wearing the fucking helmet andhe wasn't speeding, merde", he growled. "Oui, Tanger. I don't want to sound like a hippie weirdo, but I had a strange feeling the night before the accident, I didn't tell Nancy because I didn't want to freak her out", he chuckled weakly. Kris poured himself another brandy and drained it in one gulp, feeling much bolder all of a sudden. "Alex, I've never told anyone this before, but I've been having weird freaky dreams lately", he said with a sardonic little laugh. "Whoa, what happened?", he asked as he sat down on the couch. Kris took a large swallow of his brandy. "You know how I joke sometimes about my ancestor Hugh Letang who was a wizard? I think I might have a touch of the sorcier myself", he chuckled. "I went for a drive after I dropped off Marie the night of the Burns' supper and went all the way to Ohio, then I drove back home. I had Blue Skies by Benny Goodman stuck in my head because I was listening to the 40's station on Sirius so I went to get myself a drink. I poured myself some Grand Marnie and went to leave the kitchen when I saw a ghost, it was a young guy in a gangster suit, I swear he looked like me except he had blue eyes, and then he disappeared", he said. "Wow, what else?", he asked. "I had a couple of others like that, the worst was when I was in Ottawa for the All-Star Game. I was dreaming I was in this weird old club that looked like a movie, I couldn't feel or move anything. The same guy was onstage doing a solo on the saxophone and then some guys came in with Tommy guns and shot everyone, I couldn't move and I saw the whole thing. The second time was in Carolina, it was just weird. I was floating above the ice at the old Montreal Forum during a game against the New York Americans, those guys went out of business in the 40's. What was real freaky was that the Americans' goal was scored by Jean Gagnon, that's Marie's dad's name and he looked exactly like him", said Kris. "Did you check out this Jean Gagnon guy on Google?", asked Alexandre. "Non, I'm afraid of what I'm going to find", he chuckled weakly. Alexandre put the cups away and closed the bottle of brandy as he reached for his Blackberry and pulled up Wikipedia. He typed something in the search box, frowning when he saw the handful of search results. "Ah, here it is", he said, handing him the phone. Kris looked down at the screen and read the article, the hairs on the back of his neck starting to rise. "Merde", he muttered. "What is it?", he asked. "That's Marie's dad, looks exactly like him. But how the hell he get here if he's from the 40's, time travel isn't real. And how come no one went looking for him, is she a time traveler too?", he asked aloud, the words before him on the screen sounding unbelievable: Jean-Pierre Gagnon (born December 8, 1915-disappeared 1942) was a French-Canadian left winger for the New York Americans from 1935-1942. He was a slightly built man of about 5'6 and 150lbs which made him one of the smaller players in the league, but due to his skating speed and quick hands able to score 141 goals in his seven-year career. Gagnon was born on December 8, 1915 in the Quebec village of La Chapelle notre Dame, the youngest of eight children born to Henri and Marguerite Gagnon. Gagnon played amateur hockey for his local parish and was signed by an Americans scout at eighteen, joining the team at the end of their training camp prior to the 1935-1936 season. Gagnon was one of the few consistent players on an Americans team that regularly landed under .500 throughout the 30's and early 40's. His career year was in 1939-1940 when he scored 25 goals and 27 assists for 52 points and made that year's All-Star team and the Americans made the playoffs, only to be bounced in the first round. Gagnon had a bit of a reputation as a ladies' man as his good looks and cheerful French charm were appealing to many women. By the standards of the time, he was married rather late at age 24 to Daisy Dean, the daughter of New York Giants pitcher Paul Dean and the brother of St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Dizzy Dean. The couple had met in Florida when Gagnon accompanied his friend and New York Giants second baseman Jerome Holtzmann, who worked as an equipment manager for the Americans in the off-season. However, Daisy died in March the following year after complications from eclampsia while giving birth to their daughter. Gagnon was told by team management to report back to the team and play, as the team was fighting for the last playoff spot. He played his first game back in Chicago against the Blackhawks, suffering a hit by Blackhawks defenseman Earl Seibert that shattered his kneecaps and made him leave the game and be admitted to a local hospital. Gagnon's career was over despite several operations on his knees and his daughter had been sent to live in a convent at Matane as he was recuperating from surgery. Gagnon disappeared in the summer of 1942 after telling friends he was going to get his daughter from the convent. The last known sighting of Gagnon and his daughter was on July 17, 1942 as they boarded a ferry from Halifax to Newfoundland. To this day, Jean Gagnon is officially listed as a missing person in Canada and the case is still open. "What the fuck was that? I know Wikipedia can be full of crap, but why would anyone make that up? If I tell Marie, I might be out of a girlfriend", said Kris, leaning back against the couch and with a dazed look on his face. "Je sais, Tanger. Why didn't you tell anyone?", he asked. "Jordan is a good guy but he's not very serious, he's just laugh and buy me a drink. And Geno would be really freaked out, he's a good dude but he wouldn't want to hear that. I don't know if I should tell anyone else", he chuckled weakly. "I won't tell anyone, Tanger. But maybe it can wait until after the playoffs, you need to concentrate", said Alexandre. "Good idea, Alex. I'm going to bed, bonne nuit", he said. Kris went into the bathroom and brushed his teeth, stripping down to his boxers as he went quietly into the bedroom and getting in besides Marie as he tried not to wake her up. The Wikipedia article was still on his mind as he lay on his back and stared at the ceiling. I hope this is just some fucked up dream, maybe it was the brandy. But that was a real article, does that mean she's a time traveler? And her dad really did play for the Americans, like in the dream. But maybe Alexandre is right and I ought to concentrate on the playoffs first, then get to the bottom of this, he mused as he shut his eyes and tried to sleep. |

Chapter 31 "Vancouver is a lovely city, I thought Ottawa was nice but it is so beautiful here", said Marie. Ellen just laughed as she took a picture with her phone of one of the totem poles in Stanley Park. "Aye, it is. The best city I have ever visited was Edinburgh, it has all the castles and museums and the best pubs. Glasgow is bloody awful, though, very dirty and full of neds. And there isn't much to see except a few museums, rubbish place. You really ought to visit Scotland someday", she said. "This summer, Alexandre is taking me and his family to England. The Burrows' are originally from Ripon in North Yorkshire and we're having a family reunion. Next year he wants to take me Rimini in Romagna where my family is from", said Nancy. "I heard Italy is lovely, Nancy. We just go to Scotland a lot, my cousin is the head of Clan Sutherland and we have a castle in the Sutherland district. Da doesn't seem to want to go anywhere else", said Ellen. The women were at Stanley Park near downtown Vancouver the following morning, t heir men still sleeping. The park was located near the harbor with a cool breeze coming from Vancouver Sound, requiring a hoodie but otherwise pleasant. The park was full of joggers and dog-walkers and nannies with their charges as they stuck to the paths near the water, the handcarved totem poles watching over them. The totem poles were massive and gazed impassively with their huge eyes, the fantastical carvings of birds, chiefs, ancient spirits and demons seeming to guard over everything. "Too bad, you're not here for more time, you really ought to see the mountains and lakes in Yolo and go to Okanagan, that's where they have the apples. British Columbia is gorgeous, period", said Nancy. "Next time, maybe we can turn this into a road trip. I really wanted to see Nashville, I'm a big country fan and that's the epicenter of it", said Ellen. "I don't like country music, I heard enough of it growing up in Rimouski. I much prefer LMFAO, but Alex is a huge metalhead", said Nancy with a little laugh. "LMFAO are very silly, the songs are stupid. But I would suppose many women are not into metal, I'm a jazz fan myself", said Marie. "LMFAO are fun and they are good for dancing, their new album is awesome. And they are very funny", said Nancy. "Oui, I mean no offense, Nancy. I just think they are very silly, I hear their music all the time in Pittsburgh", said Marie apologetically. "I understand, a lot of people don't like them", said Nancy. Ellen and Nancy took pictures and chatted happily as they took pictures but Marie hung back and seemed more thoughtful. She was sleeping but she heard snatches of their conversation last night, something about Wikipedia and time traveling. Maybe they were drunk, she mused. Hugo looked on grimly as he floated above the city, not knowing quite how to feel about Kris telling Alexandre. At least Burrows will keep his word and not tell anyone, but not everyone should know. If he becomes too nosy, we will have to do something, most people can't know about us. I know Marie has no idea, except for being at the convent with the nuns. I will have to do something, he mused. In spite of everything, Hugo had to admit Vancouver was a lovely city. It sat on the edge of its gorgeous harbor and the blue waters, forests, and gleaming skyscrapers combined to make a beautiful city. In all his travels through the years, it had to be one of the most beautiful places he had ever seen. And I have seen a lot of places, but this is one of the best, he mused. Hugo made himself go back to Pittsburgh as he arrived at Alisdair Sutherland's grand house in Castle Shannon. The middle-aged Scotsman answered the door in his green velvet monogrammed robe, smiling at the ancient Breton wizard. "Welcome, Hugo. What is the matter?", he asked. "I was in Vancouver, Kris and Marie were there with his team. Kris told his friend Alexandre Burrows, they saw a Wikipedia article about Jean Gagnon and now he is suspicious", said Hugo. "Bloody hell, the less people know about us and Sol Duga, the better. We canna have people messing with our business", said Alisdair. "Aye, I understand. But Kris still does not know about his heritage, and that is just going to freak him out. But I have a good feeling Burrows will not say anything, he is a good lad", said Hugo. Just then, there was a knock on the door. "Excuse-moi, but I was told to come here", said Jean Gagnon, looking about warily. "We were expecting you, monsieur Gagnon. Would you like a drink?", asked Hugo. "Oui, a kirsch brandy", replied Jean. Hugo poured him a generous measure of the potent cherry brandy and handed it to him. "Monsieur Gagnon, we know", he said simply. Jean swallowed the brandy whole and turned pale, crossing himself with an unsteady hand. "What do you want, if you hurt Marie I will kill you", he vowed. "Jean, we aren't here to hurt you. I am saying that we know who you are, you are Jean Gagnon of the New York Americans, non? All we are saying is that Marie and Kris are going to help us break this curse", said Hugo. "What do you mean? I don't want trouble", said Jean warily. "I am a wizard, Gagnon. I have seen everything and for many years, my vision is powerful. You are a time-traveler and so am I, Kris and your daughter will help me break the curse", said Hugo. "What curse?", asked Jean. "I am under a curse, Jean Gagnon. I will live forever but all my sons will die young, it is because I tried to do something right", said Hugo. "What did you do?", asked Jean. "I was a Druid in training back in Gaul around the time it was part of Rome. There was a temple of Vesta in the city and it was staffed by a few local girls who were Gauls. One of the priestesses was my younger cousin who was about to be raped by my head Druid. He put the curse on me and he was right, I have been on this earth for nearly two thousand years, in Gaul and France and Canada. All my wives and sons have died young, Kris is my last son, my last son before him was Paul who was to be the one who broke the curse as his wife Celestine had the Sol Duga heritage as well, but he was killed in a shootout and she miscarried their baby who would have been a powerful wizard. The curse would have been broken if Celestine had their child, their child was to have gone back in time and killed the head Druid and stopped the curse", said Hugo. Jean nodded slowly, his head bobbing up and down like a puppet on a string. "Ah, I need a smoke", he muttered. He reached into his pocket and took a cigarette from an open packet and lit it with his silver Zippo, immediately calming down after a few puffs as the nicotine started working. "But what about Marie?", he asked. "Marie is going along with Kris, so is Ellen and Evgeni Malkin. Since she is your daughter, she has the gift as well", said Hugo. "But why is Malkin going along?", asked Alisdair. "I highly doubt that Malkin would want his girlfriend going without him, Alisdair. And wouldn't you feel safer with him around, you do trust him?", asked Hugo, raising an eyebrow. "Aye, I trust the lad. But he doesn't have the Sol Duga heritage", said Alisdair. "I know, but there have been people who have gone back in time without actually having the heritage. He is in that category", said Hugo. Jean finished his cigarette and started puffing away on another one, the whole conversation sounding so bizarre as he tried to make sense of it. "How do I tell Marie this?", he asked, forcing himself to sound calm. "We will tell Kris after the playoffs, Jean. After all, the fans are going to be mighty suspicious if they were to disappear during the playoffs", Hugo chuckled. The Penguins won the game against the Canucks 1-0 with Evgeni scoring the only goal off of Roberto Luongo late in the third period. Since Vancouver had already clinched their division and were first overall in the Western Conference, the fans only booed a bit knowing there was no way they were going to lose position as the #1 seed. "Now, all we gotta do is see who we're playing in the first round", said James as he applied gel to his hair and combed it. "Yeah, it's either Florida or Carolina. Please let it be Florida, I don't want to face Eric", laughed Jordan. "We can watch the game on the TV in the plane, the Florida game against Carolina is on the NHL Network. If Florida wins, we face them and if Carolina wins we face them", said Sidney. "Then we root for Florida then, I don't want Eric kicking my ass", laughed Jordan. The equipment was loaded onto the bus as everyone finished getting dressed and boarded the bus going straight to the airport, getting on the charter back to Pittsburgh. The mood on board was a good one as they had just beaten the top team in the Western Conference and they themselves had clinched second place in the Eastern Conference, just a game behind the Rangers. Kris and Marie found their seats as he still had the game on his mind, his odd conversation with Alexandre still playing in his head. He had pushed it aside when he was playing, knowing that thinking about it would only distract from his game and lead to scoring chances against the team. And I don't want the coach yelling at me, he thought sardonically. The bus arrived at the airport and they quickly boarded the charter while the equipment was being loaded. The team waited impatiently for the plane to be airborne and the clear was given so they could watch the game on TV, going straight to the NHL Network as the pregame show was getting started. Everyone waited impatiently for the pregame to end so the game would start, already knowing the standings and not wanting to hear anymore blabber. The whole plane became silent as the game was about to start at the Bank Atlantic Center in Miami, the stands a sea of red, orange and blue as they came to see the long time doormat Panthers win and get a higher playoff spot. A sense of anticipation was heightened as Florida Marlins outfielder Logan Morrison was escorted onto the ice to drop the first puck, escorted by the referees as he dropped the puck between Panthers center Steven Weiss and Eric before being escorted back to his seat and Weiss gained possession, much to the delight of the fans. It was a tense game throughout as neither team gave an inch, the defense preventing shots on goal and goalies Jose Theodore and Cam Ward shutting the door. The game was 0-0 as it headed into sudden-death overtime as both the arena and the plane grew silent. With less than thirty seconds to go, Weiss scored the game-winner as he was mobbed by his teammates and the crowd roared and tossed hats and other debris onto the ice. "Miami, here we come!", yelled Jordan. |
