I prefer het, because it's easier for me to identify with the characters. However, some of the best writing I have read on this board to date was/is slash. Generally speaking, I don't care about het/slash distinction if it is good writing with strong characters. |

Yup. For a strange reason the numbers on that poll are not reflected on the forum.

Well, you already said before you loved slash, so you're not really too much of a lurker now. And I never really want lurkers to be forced out of their hiding places. Some people naturally lurk, or feel scared, or uninvited to participate, or whatever. I've been there. Just saying, if there's any guests or members who are lurking, don't be shy, I don't bite, my James muse does. ![]() Anyway, I think a lot of the people in the old pairing poll are now gone, that's why. *shrug* And... thanks, I think! lol. That does belong in another thread somewhere, though don't know what. Or maybe something in PM instead. |

@ Achernar: Awesome pic! lol @ Isis: That's true, we all begin as "lurkers". For me it was actually before I decided to sign in the forum. It does take a little time to admit you like slash, at least in my case. But now, you know I'm an avid fan, especially with your view of James/Lars fics! I love them all!

Yeah, honestly, it'd be an interesting discussion to have one day. What got you into slash? Why were you not that open to it in the first place? Things like that. I mean, in this medium of fandom we've got, we're writing RPF (Real Person Fiction) so already we're in the taboo side of the fanfiction world. Throw slash in there and it's like OHGODWHY.jpg. Right? |

why not open it this week? I thought fanfictions were already part of the taboo side of internet lawl. What I have always wondered is "Why slash?" the reasons why people likes slash fanfiction. and I'm pretty sure we can even find answers in the unconsious of the people. I have always wanted to do a full-research about it. When and How it started. Some of the ideas I've got is the appeal of the suposition of situations, the joy humans find in gossip, why "we think seeing two men together is hot" (opposite to why some males like to see a couple of girls), and most of all the fact we tend to enjoy more "written stuff". Curious fact Spoiler: click to toggle

I will freely admit to being extremely fussy! I do like slash (although not necessarily the most graphic slash - I'm more about the actual story behind it!) and much prefer reading it to het. When it's done well - it can be fantastic, with real depth and interest, and real emotion. There is a lot of room for character exploration within it as well. The only times I am not so into it is (unless it's obvious comedy!) Kirk and Lars are made into raging fairies for want of a better description and feminised beyond belief. It does happen often - undoubtedly I've been guilty of it! They are men, and men who have survived in a harsh business, so they aren't going to burst into tears over breaking a nail! ;) There are some amazing het authors out there - particularly Verity (used to be on this board, not sure if she is anymore) and it was just a hilarious rollicking good ride. Comedy/gen is more how I would describe that! My problem with het fiction is that there is generally an OFC - and it is so incredibly easy for them to become a 'mary jane' sort of character, you know, with hardly any flaws, and those flaws they have can be a positive, not a real character at all. In an exaggerated way, they are pretty, and feisty and 'different' from the other girls that the guys meet or there's just 'something' about them... you know that kind of thing. Generally unrealistic and I just don't find I can get into it. It's not really my bag! I do also love stories which are put in another world, mystical or futuristic setting - some of these stories are just absolutely fantastic, they really take the reader away into a whole other place, and bring out even more excellent opportunities for fun and games with characters!

My thoughts exactly here! When I'm looking for a fic, I want to new stuff in it or I'd like to see it written extremely well.
