Some Kind Of Monster

Hello gents! So, I had this idea for a het fic in my head for a while, and after many false starts, I managed to get it going! So, here's the first chapter; my OC should come in the next chapter. I hope you're gonna be interested! ;-) Chapter 1: They were doing it. They were really doing it! Six months before the fateful date and it was just sinking in. Metallica would play a gig with a full orchestra. It was inconceivable and totally crazy. The epitome of metal associated with the symbol of classical music. The boys may have expressed different opinions on the event in question, but deep down they were all excited and a bit scared about it. After all, it was bound to be, at the very least, original! Despite all the criticism they were sure to receive with this questionable choice, they just had to remind themselves that they were Metallica; they could do whatever they wanted! This ludicrous idea was the reason why a very peculiar sight could be seen in the parking lot of the Berkeley Community Theater. Indeed, it was not every day a Porsche and a Harley Davidson were present there. Of course, if outsiders found the sight strange, it was nothing compared to what the four men felt. Despite their “fuck it all” attitude they couldn’t help but be impressed and a tad overwhelmed, not that any of them would admit it openly, let alone to themselves. Today, they were given access to an entirely new world; one which was supposed to stay closed to them forever. Indeed, six months before the date, they were to meet with Michael Kamen, the conductor of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, who had first approached them with the idea. They had already worked with him before, noticeably for the recording of Nothing Else Matters, but this time Kamen would be the one in his element and they, the outsiders. Stepping into the building, the guys couldn’t help but feel a certain apprehension. You could scream all you wanted that you didn’t care about others’ opinions, but being judged was never an agreeable experience. Especially when the people knew what they were talking about. They were about to get to work with the elite of classical musicians; people who had so much more knowledge than they ever did, except maybe Cliff. Indeed, unbeknown to each of them, at least three members of Metallica were reminiscing, remembering their lost friend, the one who really knew music. It was one of the reasons they were motivated to make sure this insane project became a success eight years after the first mention of the idea; a special – yet crazy – way to honor their missing friend. Shaking themselves from their thoughts, they noticed a lot of people with various instruments coming their way. Apparently, they had just arrived in time for the end of the repetition. After observing these musicians’ faces, they couldn’t help but look at each other. Some of them were obviously ecstatic, almost in awe, while others looked mutinous. James let out a snort. Really, this was the elite of music? They were obviously dealing with the same things as they were; tempers, egos, sensibilities, etc… Catching the little smirk and quirked eye-brow on Lars, James deduced that they were thinking the same, as usual. “Shall we?” Lars asked the three others with a grin. They didn’t need to wander long, as after the extensive number of leaving musicians, came their future conductor, Michael Kamen. “Look who’s here! Metallica! Well, don’t stay in the middle of the hall boys, come with me. I can assure you, despite appearances, you will not die inside this building!” he exclaimed with an enormous grin on his face. Well, someone was in a good mood… “Hey Michael! You should be careful! You’ll end up stuck on the ceiling if you keep jumping around like that!” Lars exclaimed. Kirk snickered into his hands and Jason snorted while James raised an eye-brow. Was Lars really making fun of someone for being hyper? “Thanks for the recommendation, Lars! That means a lot coming from you!” answered Kamen still grinning. “Anyway, let’s go downstairs. If we stay here, we’ll be disturbed. Really, sometimes I think I’m the conductor of a bunch of kids!” On the way, Jason couldn’t contain his curiosity any longer and began asking questions about the orchestra, conducting, and the musicians. “You’re rehearsing for a specific program right now?” “We always work with a specific program. It’s a huge set-list made up a semester before each season. That way, both the public and we know in advance what will come next,” Kamen answered. “Really?” exclaimed Kirk looking confused. “So you never play just for fun or change programs, things like that?” “No. At least, never with the orchestra. Some of the musicians have side-projects on the side, but that’s it…,” he got as a response, with a nearly indulgent smile. It was a little unsettling for them to discover a new facet to music; one where music was first a means to pay bills, and passion next; the opposite from their vision. It was strange, really, they were the ones supposedly neck deep in show-business! Such a foreign concept, to live by music instead of living for music… “Doesn’t that get boring after a while?” Kirk asked perplexed. “Well, yes, it can become boring. Of course, it also depends on what the program is made up of, which is partly my work. So, I try to diversify the styles, composers, soloists and key players, to create a nice and attractive variety for both the orchestra and the public. Those who truly love music, the same way you do, have side projects going on, with people from the orchestra or not, it varies. Like my collaboration with you on Nothing Else Matters, which involved musicians from this orchestra. Anyway, we’re here. Please, make yourself comfortable boys.” Edited by Sekhmet49, April 25, 2012, 1:31 pm.

And here it is, the second chapter! Please comment! At least half way through their discussion, they were interrupted by an almost timid knock. “Come in!” Kamen called. A young woman entered, she was neither short nor tall, had black hair, pale skin and an hourglass figure. She wore simple black jeans, a red blouse with ¾ sleeves, and was perched on high heel pumps, all made of high quality materials. Her make-up was discrete yet masterfully made. All in all, she looked like a well raised young lady. Her appearance gave away nothing of her feelings. Apart from a passing straining of her features, they had no way of discovering the storm of feelings their presence evoked in her. Nonetheless, the boys’ opinions about her varied greatly. Lars, despite his ability to spot a potential useful contact and to negotiate almost anything with anyone, didn’t see more than a young woman who wore somewhat classy clothes but seemed of no importance to him. Kirk and Jason, once more, were unknowingly in agreement. For both of them, she gave the impression of a woman with a lot of class. One who certainly didn’t belong to their world, one who probably was from high society. They also were the only ones to see the surprise in her eyes when she entered, with even a hint of panic. In any case, her figure didn’t hurt the eyes! James’s opinion was the least favorable of them all. All he saw, with only a passing gaze, mind you, was a cold woman clearly from a rich family, with a superior attitude. It was this warped opinion that influenced his first words. “What do you want?” he asked quite rudely. To his surprise, she didn’t stammer or even show that she recognized them. All he got was a raised eye-brow, before she finally talked, albeit sarcastically and coldly. “As it is Michael’s office, you will be surprised to learn that I am here to talk with him. But, don’t worry, I am sure he is thankful you wonder about his schedule.” Gobsmacked would be a good summary of their state of mind, although for different reasons. Jason was definitely envious that she dared to talk back to the Mighty Hetfield, something he dearly wished to be able to do. Kirk was impressed and slightly fearful of her impending fate. Lars was getting more and more interested about her, as anyone who could reply in that way to James Hetfield was bound to be a unique character! James, well, he felt a mix of anger, embarrassment, shame and curiosity. Unfortunately, anger won out. However, before he could worsen his case further, Kamen intervened. He was the only one to know how much it cost her to talk like that to the singer. But he wouldn’t reveal that piece of information. For one, he valued his life, thank you very much, and he respected her far too much to betray her privacy in such a fashion. “Angie! My dear, what may I do to help you?” he asked with a definitely amused inflection. At this point, and to James’s jealousy – not that he’d admit it – her face changed almost completely. With a slight smile and softened features, she addressed Kamen while seemingly totally ignoring the other occupants of the room. “I was wondering if we could do our usual “debriefing” of the last repetition before I leave. My parents are expecting my presence tonight for one of their cocktails.” “Oh! No, Angie, I don’t have anything more to say. You know that I feel you need to let go a bit more for the Beethoven concerto, to go deeper, but otherwise, you know that I have trouble conducting when you play! I’d prefer just listening to you!” Kamen figured a little speech, to make sure these boys understood a bit more who they were dealing with, was necessary. He had hoped she would lose her cold composure, being complimented in front of THEM, but alas, she was far too controlled right now. Although, from her gaze, she knew exactly what he tried to do! On that note, she gave a hug to Kamen. And with a passing glance in their general direction, she said her goodbyes to the Met boys. Kamen was definitely entertained. Knowing the amount of contradicting feelings she left in her wake was amusing. James in particular seemed deep in thought. Indeed, said man could not help but be curious about this… lady. How could a simple, young unimportant thing like her have that much of an effect on him? |

Chapter 3 : “Who was that?” James asked with a disdainful tone. “She, as you say, was a woman of great talent. She’s the soloist for our next program. She’s an internationally renowned violinist,” Kamen answered reprovingly. “She’s famous?!” Kirk exclaimed incredulously, before immediately withering under Kamen’s glare. “I mean… she’s really young!” “How old is she anyway?” Lars interrupted, partly to relieve Kirk, partly to get more information about this… unique individual. “She’s 24 years old. She’ll be 25 for your first show with us actually,” Kamen answered. “24?!” Jason cried out. “Yes. Although, her situation is not that great you know. You may have noted when you arrived that the musicians in my orchestra are not all… welcoming to her.” “They’re jealous?” Lars asked with a knowing tone. “Some of them are, yes. She went too high, too fast. At 24, she’s at a place most of these people could never dream to attain. Even after decades of work,” Kamen explained. He knew how important Metallica was to her, and he wanted to give her a chance to get closer to one of her very rare joys. This young woman was so captivating and pleasant, once you got to know her. Despite, or more accurately, because of her fame in the classical world, she was really isolated. And her parents’ attitude certainly didn’t help! However, he knew they were coming close to dangerous waters and decided he had given them enough to think about. Hopefully, they would reflect upon it, and not set their opinions in stone. “Anyway, let’s get back to our strange affair!” Angie’s POV Metallica! She just met Metallica! Oh dear, she needed to calm down! No getting excited as long as she was not in private. There! She could let go. Holy…! She had hoped to, one day, finally escape and get the opportunity to go to a show, but then, she met them at her own work place! That’s just…! Oh, but she had been really cold toward them. Such an attitude! She had probably come out as a pretentious bitch. Although, they had been a bit rude. Staring and talking to her like that. Especially James. Not that she had been more focused on him. Nope. Absolutely not. It didn’t matter anyway. It was not like she could be seen with the likes of them. It’d be unbecoming of someone of her status. Dear god, her mother’s voice was invading her mind! The power of repetitive lectures! Tsk, anyone who thought that Mao was a master at brain washing never had never met her mother! Fortunately, she or her father had yet to know she liked Metallica. Decisions, decisions… She could either observe them from afar and keep her life as it was, or try to get in touch with them again, and suffer a permanent lecture-induced headache and the loss of anything related to Metallica that she owned. It was not like she had a choice anyway. What on earth would they do with someone like her? Why would they express any sort of interest in her? They were rock stars and she, just an insignificant girl. Besides, she wouldn’t know what to tell them. She has never been known for her social skills! Maybe she could find a way to listen to their rehearsals…? James’s POV They were out of the meeting with Kamen. All along the discussion, he couldn’t help but think about her; the woman who interrupted them. He didn’t know why he was so curious about her. She was quite young, cold toward them, a classical musician, and obviously from a different world. Why does he want to know more? What interests him so? |
