CHAPTER 31 It was Cliff’s 14th birthday. He came into our room at about 10am to wake us up. He was so excited. We all sat up on the bed while Cliff opened his presents. There was a rather large pile of them that had come in the mail. “Okay,” Kirk said grabbing the first gift, “this one is from my grandmother, your great grandmother, it’s come all the way from the Philippines.” Cliff unwrapped the gift to reveal a beautifully hand sewn shirt with a wonderful design on it. Cliff quickly changed into it, it was a lovely light white cotton, it looked great on him. “Now this one is from your mother and I,” he passed him another parcel. Cliff quickly unwrapped to reveal a number of items, some new cds, some new clothes, and other bits and pieces. Cliff lifted them out of the paper to reveal a framed photo underneath. It was a photo of the three of us backstage in Perth, Australia. “This is the best present ever…” Cliff said, tears in his eyes. “And this afternoon we’re going shopping and I’m buying you a surfboard, any one you want, so we can go surfing together.” “That’d be awesome dad!” Later in the afternoon people came to set up for the party, and I could sit back and relax. Kirk and Cliff had already been shopping and Cliff had picked out the surfboard that he wanted and it would be delivered to the house within a couple of days. Lars was the first to arrive; he had brought Myles and Layne with him, which was great because Cliff loved playing with the kids. Lars was carrying a rather large box. “Okay kids, how about you go with Uncle Kirk and you might be able to go and see the horses huh?” “Yay! Horses!” The boys skipped away after Kirk, so excited and so happy. “Cliff you have visitors!” I called out. “How are you Lars?” He sat down next to me and I gave him a kiss on the cheek. “I’m a lot better, I’m going to go on a holiday in a couple of weeks, just for about 2 weeks, I’m really looking forward to it,” he smiled, it was great to see him happy. “That’s great Lars, really, it is.” “Oh hey Lars!” Cliff said as he walked into the room. “Cliff, buddy, happy birthday!” Lars said, moving over on the couch to make room for him. Cliff sat down and Lars handed him the box. “Okay, now, before you open it, this is a gift from both your Uncle James and myself. We were going to give this **** to our kids when they are old enough, but we want you to have it. Go on kid, open the box…” Inside the box was old records, shirts, letters and lastly a big old cowboy hat, I knew instantly who these things belonged to. “This is Cliff’s stuff, isn’t it?” I asked, my Cliff was speechless, going through the records looking over each one individually. “Lars, are you sure you want me to have this? I mean he was your friend and…” “Cliff, it belongs to you now.” Lars and Cliff hugged, it was such a proud moment for me. Later on James and his wife, Francesca, and their three children arrived. “You like the present little dude?” James asked Cliff. “Like it? I love it!” “Glad to here it kid.” Rob and his family arrived, and soon after that Cliff’s friends from school were there as well. “I can’t believe we’re at a party with Metallica,” one of Cliff’s friends said as they walked by me. “Nah man, they can’t be Metallica,” another kid said. “Hey, Cliff wouldn’t lie to us!” Cliff was the life of the party, he just seemed so incredibly happy. Jason and a few of the guys in the band that he was starting with Cliff arrived a few hours after the party started. Instantly, I could see James get a little tense. He handed Castor to Fran and began to walk over to where Jason and I were standing. “Hello Newsted,” James said, he sounded a little uneasy. “I’ll leave you guys to it,” I said, trying to escape the awkward situation. “No no, stay…” Jason said lightly grabbing me by the arm. I gave in, there was no arguing with them. Kirk came over. “James, buddy!” He said giving him a hug. “Jason, bro!” He said turning to Jason to give him a hug. “And what am I, chopped liver?” I said jokingly. “Aww… Claire… come ‘ere!” He said, wrapping me up in a big hug. I smiled, he was such a great guy. “Okay well I’ll leave you guys to it,” Kirk said, “I have to go and talk to some more 14 year olds who keep saying ‘Dude you’re a god!’” Kirk laughed and started to walk over to where Cliff was standing by the banquet table. “So, how have you been?” James asked Jason. “Yeah, not too bad, yourself?” “Good, good.” “How are the kids?” Jason asked. “Great, they’re here today, they’ll probably come and talk to you later.” “Yeah, I don’t mind.” “How’s ummm…. Ummm….” “The Chophouse?” “Yeah, how’s that going?” “Really well, Cliff’s been coming down and jamming with us a bit.” “He really enjoys it,” I added. “Well that’s great,” James was sincere. Francesca was walking over towards us. “Sorry to interrupt,” she began. “Nah you’re fine,” “Oh, didn’t see you there, hello Jason. I’m going to need to steal James for a little while, Marcella wants her Daddy to help her with her dinner because Mommy always makes her eat the yucky stuff.” “Sorry guys, got work to do…” Fran and James walked away hand in hand, they were so cute together. I could picture him with anyone else. “Well that went well,” I said turning to Jason. “Better then the last time we spoke,” Jason said with a little smile. “At least there was no yelling and no violence…” “When he yells or when he’s violent I know how to handle him, he’s so… he’s so….” “Different?” “Not the James I knew.” “You’ll get use to him.” “With time, but do I want to?” |

CHAPTER 32 (Already? Man how much of this have I written!) Jason and I continued chatting for a while, but after what Kirk had told us about the things they had done to him, I simply could not look him in the eye. “Claire what is wrong with you? Why are you acting so strange?” Jason asked after a long uncomfortable pause. “I don’t know what you’re talking about Jase,” I replied, trying to keep my cool. “Oh come off it, you won’t look me in the eye, the conversation seems forced….” “Okay, okay!” I gave in, “Kirk told me about what they did to you after I left and…” “**** Claire, if you’re blaming yourself then you’re just being stupid!” “But…” “No, stop, think about what you’re saying….” I looked him in the eyes, he was the same person he’d always been, I’d just let my guilt cloud that. “Then why are you making an effort to be friends with them after all of that?” “Claire you of all people should know how much people can change if you just give them a chance. I remember almost 15 years ago you crying on my shoulder because Kirk was treating you so badly, now look at you and look at him.” I looked over to see Kirk chatting with some of Cliff’s friends, a large piece of birthday cake on a paper plate in one hand and a big smile on his face. He was obviously telling them one of his wild tales about his adventures on the road because he was animating what he was saying with his free hand, and I swear his was air-guitaring for a second. He looked over to me and smiled, giving me a little wave as well. “Think about it, he’s surfing and keeping fit, concentrating on being a good dad to Cliff, he’s even apologized for all the bad stuff that he did to me in the past. And the reason he sought you out was to apologize for what he did to you. And now look at yourself. You went and got a degree, and had a career while you raised your son. And what a fantastic job you did with Cliff. He’s smart, he’s funny, he’s mature, and he’s responsible. And **** is he talent. He’s a better musician then half the adults I know! You did it Claire, you grew up!” I looked up at Jason and smiled, he was right, totally right, and I had been incredibly stupid about the whole thing. “Can you ever forgive me for being such an idiot Jase?” “I don’t know… you might have to make me some of your hangover cure pancakes….” He said with a grin. “You remember those?” I said with a shocked look on my face. “How could I forget! Every morning after a big night on the town we’d stop in at the Hammett residence for some hangover cure pancakes, I don’t know what were in them but they worked every single time!” “Ahh… my secret recipe. Only two people in the history of the universe have ever liked my pancakes, you and James. Everyone else only ate them to rid themselves of a hangover.” “I have been missing those pancakes forever, in fact that was the one thing me and James ever agreed on, you should have left us the recipe. We should have gotten custody of the recipe!” We both started to giggle, reminiscing about old times. “So it wasn’t all bad between you and James then?” I asked after the laughter stopped. “Nah, in fact for the most part it was pretty good, we were like brothers and after like 3 years of being in Metallica everything was sweet. Then they got families and wives and I got bored and well, you watch MTV, you know the story…” There was sadness in his eyes, I guess a part of him would always miss those days, but we both knew there was no going back. “Hey you aren’t sweet talking my wife are you Newsted?” It was Kirk, he had such a grin on his face, it looked like he was having a great time. “Nah buddy, she’s all yours,” Jason said with a smile. “Oh man, that cake is delicious! You’d love it Jase,” Kirk said putting his arms around me. “Then I’d better go try some,” Jason replied, “it was great catching up with, again.” He smiled at me and began to walk towards the buffet table. “So you two seemed pretty chatty,” Kirk said. “Yeah, we were just catching up, talking about hangover cure pancakes….” “Oh what the **** were in those they made my stomach turn!” Kirk exclaimed. I started laughing, it was exactly like I remembered, Jason running for cake and Kirk insulting my cooking. “God they weren’t that bad…” I tried to defend myself. “Oh yeah, they were that bad.” We all stood around chatting for a while, I then helped Lars get the boys fed, and then I tried to keep the occupied while Lars had something to eat. Then a courier arrived with a rather large mail bag from the MetClub offices. “Oh thanks Brian, but I’m not replying to fan mail today…” Kirk said politely. “Oh these aren’t for you,” the courier replied, “is there a Cliff Hammett here?” I instantly say Cliff pop out from the crowd and run towards the courier. “Yeah, I’m Cliff,” he said, trying to contain his excitement. “Alright, I just need you to sign here….” Cliff took the mail bag straight to the living room, a large crowd began to follow. “Ummm… can everyone but Jase, Mom, Dad, James, Lars and Rob kind of give us some space for a minute, there’s something a bit weird about all this…” Cliff had put it in such a way that no one felt offended by being ushered out of the living room and away from the action. With the small party situated in the living room, Cliff emptied the contents of the bad straight onto the floor. There were letters, parcels, drawings, gifts, video cassettes, photos… Cliff had fan mail! At the beginning of almost every letter it said, “I saw that video of you playing with Metallica and I didn’t know where else to write to…” or “I heard that it was your birthday coming up and I wanted to wish you a happy birthday, you’re a wicked guitarist.” “Oh my god…” Cliff said after a long time, “I have… fans….” I looked around the room, all the guys looked incredibly proud of Cliff. And I was so proud of him as well, I knew that he was going to go far. |

CHAPTER 33 Cliff put the fan mail back in the mail bag and then went to take it to his room. “Dude, I’ll take it into your room for you, go and enjoy the party!” Lars said taking the bag off him. “Oh, thanks Uncle Lars!” Cliff said as he headed for the door. “Hey, just Lars, Uncle Lars creeps me out…” Lars yelled. “But the Hetfields and Trujillos call you Uncle Lars.” “They’re all under 10, they can get away with it.” I laughed, Lars had always been a bizarrely honest guy. Everyone made their way back out into the yard, (“Hey guys I have fans!”) and the party continued. The food was starting to run out and some parents were starting to arrive to pick up their children (“see Mom I told you his dad was in Metallica!”) and the younger kids were starting to get restless. Slowly everyone started to leave, and it was well established that the party was a huge success. “Hey Mom, Dad, can Jason stay over tonight? There’s some stuff I want to go over with him in the morning?” Cliff asked me and Kirk. I suddenly realised that Jason was the only one still there. “Yeah sure, no problem,” I said. “Jase knows where everything is so it’s pretty much home to him…” Kirk added. It was weird having Jason over as Cliff’s guest, but he was just as much his friend as he was ours. Jason and Cliff made up the spare room while Kirk and I watched TV in the living room. It wasn’t long before Jason joined us. “Where’s Cliff?” I asked. “Asleep, he was so tired he just sort of collapsed into bed,” Jason said with a chuckle. “Is anyone hungry?” Kirk asked. “Nah dude, I’m totally stuffed…” Jason said. “Yeah, same here…” “Well I’m going to grab a piece of cake and then I’m going to check on Cliff,” Kirk said heading for the kitchen, “And if anyone asks I had two pieces of cake, not three.” “You still throw a rockin’ party Claire!” Jason commented. “Thanks Jase, though it wasn’t as wild as the parties use to be…” “Hey the alcohol and the drugs and the random people passed out everywhere weren’t what made the parties fun. It was the people. There’d be James and Lars getting up to no good and making jokes, me trying to get girls but it never really working, and then there’d be you and Kirk, lost in your own little world. It was so cute.” I smiled at Jason, he was such a great guy, and such a great friend. “So the parties weren’t any good when I left?” “They were different, and I missed you.” “Yeah, I missed you too Jason.” “You know I considered you my best friend?” Jason said with a smile. “Really?” “Of course!” “And what do you think of me now?” “You’ll always be my best friend Claire, my very wonderful, very smart, very funny, very beautiful, totally platonic best friend…” I went to bed, Kirk was already in bed reading another H.P. Lovecraft novel. “Hey honey, put the book down…” I said slipping under the covers. “Yes Ma’am,” he placed the book on the night stand and looked into my eyes with a grin across his face. “What are you smiling at?” I questioned. “Well I was thinking…” “So that’s what I could hear….” I joked. “No seriously…” “Okay, I’m totally serious…” “Cliff told me what he really wanted for his birthday… and it’s exactly what I want too.” He sat up in the bed, a very serious look on his face. “What are you saying Kirky?” I asked. “Okay,” he took a deep breath, “will you marry me, again?” “But your divorce isn’t final and what if it doesn’t work out and…” “And I don’t mean right this very second, and what if it does work out?” “Oh Kirk…” “Come on, what’s the worse thing that could happen? We’d live happily ever after?” He had that look in his eyes that said he was serious, and it was that look that just made me want to melt. “Of course I’ll marry you Kirk…” “There’s one other thing…” Kirk said. “Oh and what’s that?” “Cliff wants a brother or sister so we should probably make that happen for him too…” Kirk said with a cheeky grin. “Well I’d hate to disappoint someone on their birthday….” Kirk woke up before I did and he had already told Cliff and Jason the news. When I woke up I was met with questions such as ‘when will the wedding be’ and ‘are you planning a big wedding or a small wedding.’ Kirk answered both questions. “The wedding will be whenever we can organise it for legally. And we’re having a big wedding, no a huge wedding. With all the trimmings. The wedding we couldn’t afford in the 80s.” I was so excited about getting married, it was such a great feeling. My life was finally getting back on track. Three weeks later, I found out I was pregnant. |

CHAPTER 34 One year later… Kirk was back in the studio and worked long hours. Cliff was also busy with the band that he had put together with Jason, although it was yet to be named. And I was very busy with our brand new baby, Tyra. Just like Kirk and myself, Tyra had black curls and big beautiful eyes. Kirk was a very proud father. He spent every moment he was home with her, and while he was in the studio he would call at least every second hour to check up on her. The guys would joke that when the recorded the Black Album, Kirk plastered the walls with naked chicks, now he plastered the walls with pictures of his kids. It was a cold winter morning and I was packing the diaper bag to go and visit Kirk in the studio for the very first time. Kirk said that he wanted music to be a part of Tyra’s life so he listened to records with her, put her in the room with him when he played, and now it was time for our baby to have her first live Metallica experience. “Hey Mom, taking Tyra to the studio?” Cliff said standing at the door as he was munching on an apple. “Yup, what are you up to today?” I said putting the bottles into the side pockets. “Oh you know, the usual. Jason’s coming to pick me up and we’re going to do some more recording for the EP.” “How’s that going?” I asked. They’d only just started recording, but I was confident that they’d be doing well. “Fantastic,” Cliff said, he came over to sit on the bed, “we got such a great vibe going and it’s great to finally get some of my riffs out and recorded.” “Well I’m glad you’re liking it so much honey, but you’ll need a name before you’re finished recording…” “Yeah, Lars suggested Thunder****…” I started laughing. “When is he going to let that go?” I chuckled. “It’s great that he’s so supportive of what we’re doing. James said he wants to guest star on the album, sing a track for us, if Jason will let him. I want Dad to come in and do a song with me, it would be so cool…” “You know what,” I said, “I think he’d love that.” “Really?” “Your dad is so incredibly proud of you,” I smiled. “Yeah, I know,” Cliff said softly, just like his dad he was very modest. “Now can you go and get Tyra out of her crib for me?” “Sure.” Cliff was my biggest helper with Tyra, he loved his baby sister. Kirk had taken us all down to the beach and I had taken a photo of Kirk and Cliff buried in the sand up to their necks in the sand with Tyra sitting in between them, (she could already sit up by herself) it was such an adorable picture. Kirk had gotten the picture blown up to the biggest size possible and put it in the entrance hall. He wanted everyone that came into the house to see his beautiful children. Cliff brought Tyra into the bedroom and sat with her on the bed. Cliff loved to play with Tyra, she would giggle at him no matter what and Cliff thought it was great. There was a knock on the door. “I’ll go and get it,” Cliff said. “Nah, you stay here with Ty and I’ll go get the door.” I walked out into the hall and into the entrance hall. There was another knock on the door. “Who is it!” I yelled out. “It’s the new kid!” I opened the door and there was Jase. “Come on in,” I said. “Hey is that Kirk and the kids?” Jason said pointing to the beach picture. “Oh yeah, Kirk loves that picture,” I said. “You have a great family.” “Yeah, I know.” Jason and Cliff left shortly after, Cliff was going to stay over at the Chophouse so that they could get as much done as possible. Soon after they left I got Tyra into the car and drove over to the studio. “It’s my baby and my baby!” Kirk said as we walked through the door. “Okay guys, break time!” James yelled out. Kirk put down his guitar and walked over to us. He gave Tyra a kiss on the forehead and then I got a kiss too. I handed Tyra over to Kirk. “Hey girl, how are you today?” He said to her. Lars walked over to me, wiping the sweat off his brow. “Hey Claire, glad you came in, I needed a break…” “No problem Larsy…” Lars had just came back from Denmark, he had came back a new man, and with a new girlfriend. Her name was Connie and they were great together. “Hey chick,” James said as he and Rob came over. Rob instantly joined Kirk in playing with the baby and James joined our conversation. I hung around the studio for a few hours and then James declared that the day was done and it was time to go home. Kirk and I took our baby home. After Tyra had fallen asleep, Kirk and I cuddled up on the couch to watch a movie. “What about we get married on Christmas Eve?” Kirk suggested. “Where would we get married?” “We could get married right here, we could get married in the garden and then have the reception here in the house.” “That doesn’t leave us much time to plan…” “Well, I’m free to marry you now and I want to do it as soon as possible.” “Okay… we get married on Christmas Eve.” We were practically asleep when the phone started ringing. I looked over at the clock, it was 4am. “Hello?” I croaked. “Claire…” It was Jason. “What is it Jase?” “You better come down to the hospital?” “What!” I was wide awake. “It’s Cliff… and you better come down quick…” |

CHAPTER 35 “Kirk wake up!” I shoved him, desperately trying to wake him. “Baby, it’s too early…” he mumbled. “Honey wake up! It’s Cliff!” Kirk jumped up, wide awake. “What, what’s wrong!” “We need to go to the hospital, that’s all I know.” Kirk grabbed the phone and started dialing. “Fran, it’s Kirk, sorry to wake you but we need to drop Tyra off at your place…. Cliff is in hospital… Oh, James… you’ll meet us there… you’ll call Rob and Lars… okay…” I jumped out of bed and quickly got Tyra out her crib and into the car. I threw on whatever clothes I could find, and then we drove to the hospital as quickly as we could. Jason met us at the front door, and he was nearly in hysterics. It reminded me of how he was when Kirk overdosed, though this time Jason was sober, and I knew it was serious. “Jason… tell me what’s going on!” Kirk demanded. At that very moment Fran and James arrived. “Here, I’ll take Tyra…” James said taking my baby from my arms. “I don’t know what happened… we were sitting there playing and then he just collapsed… I called the ambulance and… and…” Jason was practically in tears. We all walked into the hospital, Kirk and I walking as quickly as we could. Jason directed me to where Cliff was, and what I saw will stay with me forever. Cliff was lying in the hospital bed, drips from both arms, his skin pale and his eyes shut tight. There were several doctors in the room, and two other guys I assumed were his band mates. A doctor came over to Kirk and myself, asked us if we were his parents, and then took us into the hall. My heart was pounding, my palms were sweaty, and Kirk was gripping my hand so tightly. “Mr and Mrs Hammett?” I wasn’t Mrs Hammett, but this was no time to argue facts. I nodded and waited for him to continue. “Your son has had a seizure, we believe he may have epilepsy…” “But how can this be, this has never happened before…” I said, tears in my eyes. “But what if it’s not epilepsy?” Kirk said. “Well, Mr Hammett, there is a chance that he could have a brain tumour…” “Oh god…” I was finding it hard to breath. “We’re going to run some tests in the next couple of hours, and we’ll let you know as soon as possible, until then all we can do is wait.” I fell to the ground crying, how could this be happening to my baby? Kirk picked me up and took me to go and sit down. I could hear people talking but their voices sounded fuzzy and distant. “Here, I got you some coffee…” I looked up and it was Lars. I looked around, Kirk was gone and it was just me, Jason and Lars. “Where did…” “He’s in with Cliff…” “And James and Fran…” “They’re dropping the kids off at Rob’s place, Rob offered to take care of the kids for the night and then he’ll come in tomorrow with Tyra.” I sipped the coffee and wiped my eyes. “Thank you for being here guys…” Jason sat down and put his arm around me. “Oh Claire… he’ll be fine… won’t he Lars?” “Yeah chick, he’ll be fine…” “Please, stop it, just stop it. Let me talk about what I’m afraid of…” They both looked at me, and nodded, they were allowing me to speak. “Cliff might die, or he might be really sick… and that scares me so much…” The doctor came and got me. He took Kirk and I into a room with lots of bright lights and big machines. He opened a folder and put up cat scan pictures so he could show them to us. “Cliff has a brain tumor…” My heart stopped, my whole head got heavy, I felt sick. “It’s a malignant tomor, and we’re going to need to operate.” Kirk gripped my hand even tighter, he was just getting to know his son and he could be slipping away. “After the operation he will need extensive radiation and chemo therapy. Now it’s been detected early, and Cliff has a good chance…” The doctor continued talking but I couldn’t hear him, everything was so surreal. Next thing I knew they were taking Cliff into surgery, I kissed him on the forehead, and then the wheeled him into theatre. I just started crying, and I don’t remember when I stopped, everything was just so painful. Kirk was distant, not saying a word, he got up and walked out of the room and when he came back his eyes were red and his cheeks were stained with tears. Jason and Lars stayed with us, and I was glad they did. They’re friendly faces made it a little more bearable, but it was still the longest wait of my life. Finally after almost 8 hours, the doctor called upon me and Kirk, and we went back into the little room. |

CHAPTER 36 The doctor sat us down and I prepared myself for the worst. “Thank you both for your patience, I know this must be difficult for you both.” Understatement of the century. “The operation was successful, the tumor was removed completely and I am confident that Cliff will make a full recovery. He won’t be conscious for a couple of days, but that is completely normal. As soon as he is well enough you’ll be able to take him home.” It was such a relief to hear him say that. “His therapy will begin as soon as he’s ready, and if we get it early, like we have done, there’s very little chance that it will come back. We’ll be monitoring his progress and you can rest assured that he’ll be getting the best possible care.” I walked out of the room with Kirk by my side and I felt like a great weight had been lifted off my shoulders. We were told that we could see him straight away and we were taken to the intensive care ward. He looked so peaceful and serene, just like he was sleeping. “I know I’ve been distant Claire, and I’m sorry it’s just…” “Kirk, there’s no need to explain yourself to me, I totally understand, we all deal with things in our own way.” Rob walked into the room. “Is he going to be okay? Lars told me what was going on…” “He’ll be fine,” I said with a smile. I walked into the hall to be met with a sea of anxious faces. “He’s going to be fine,” I announced and I saw the same relief on their faces that had been on mine. Fran walked out from the cafeteria with Tyra in her arms. “I think someone wants her mommy,” she said handing her over to me. I smiled down at my baby, she looked so precious, and I knew there was someone else that would want to see her. Kirk was sitting by Cliff’s side, still looking forlorn and simply starring into his sons closed eyes. “Honey, someone wants her daddy…” I whispered. Kirk looked up and smiled, taking our little girl into his arms. He cradled her, kissing her gently on the cheek, and smiled up at me. “You’re amazing, you know that, if you weren’t here I don’t know what I’d do…” “Kirk…” “No, let me finish, every moment of my life that has been difficult, or challenging, or hard, you’ve been there, from my first tour to the death of my best friend, and right now, it’s always been you. When Cliff is well enough, let’s just do it, let’s make this official…” He paused for a moment, blinking the tears out of his eyes. “Can Cliff be my best man?” “Oh Kirky, of course he can.” We stayed in the hospital for days, James was so helpful and took Tyra during the nights so that she could get some sleep even if we didn’t. I couldn’t believe how mature James was now, but I guess everyone changes. Kirk made an official statement to the press saying that Cliff’s tumor had been removed and he was going to make a full recovery. It was a hard week, but we got through it, together. It was late Friday afternoon. Kirk was asleep curled up in an armchair in the corner, Jason was sitting next to Cliff chatting away (we were told that talking to Cliff while he was in the coma could help and Jason headed the talking operation) and I had just got some more coffee from the lobby for Jase and me. In an instant I saw it, Cliff eyes fluttered open, he was alive. “Jason… you talk too much…” Cliff croaked. My face instantly lit up, and Jason started half laughing, half crying. Cliff had a smile on his face. “Where’s dad… where’s Tyra?” Cliff still couldn’t move his head, but that would all come back in time. “Your dad asleep just to your right, and Tyra is at your Uncle James and Aunty Fran’s… Jason, Kirk and I have been with you for the last week.” “You don’t call me Uncle?” “Dude,” Cliff croaked, “I don’t call cry babies ‘uncle.’” Even when he was in so much pain, we could still count on him for a laugh. “What happened to me?” “You collapsed while we were recording, and they found out you had a tumor, they operated and removed it, and after a little chemo, you will be perfectly fine.” Cliff looked confused. “Honey, just relax, I’ll get the doctor.” The doctor explained everything to Cliff and once he was gone Cliff decided that it was time to wake Kirk up. Kirk reaction was priceless. “Hey dad! Hey DAD!” The doctor had given Cliff some water to drink, and his voice was practically perfect. “What, what!” Kirk jumped up, looked over and started jumping around, happy as can be. “Cliff! You’re alive!” He hugged Cliff as best as was allowed and then at Cliff’s request he got on the phone and got everyone back to the hospital. That day was fantastic. Cliff couldn’t sit up but he had the strength to laugh and talk to us. When James arrived, Tyra was placed on Cliff’s chest, and he cuddled her, stroking her hair and kissing her forehead. Cliff was very much happy to be alive, and I was happy to have him with us. |

CHAPTER 37 Cliff's energy was short lived and he quickly became very tired. Kirk took Tyra home for the night and afterwards the others left too. I spent the night by Cliff's side. His condition was upgraded to stable overnight but the doctors informed me that he still had a long way to go. The next day some of Cliff's school friends visited him. He still couldn't stay awake for long so it was a short visit. Jason also came around to see him that morning; in fact he was the one who drove his friends to the hospital. I was glad to have Jason there; I found his presence very comforting. The visit was only a short one, as Cliff’s treatment was a priority. We all wanted him to make a speedy recovery. Cliff was in hospital for a little over a month, and I can honestly say that it was the hardest month of my life. It was great to have him home again, and I think he was just happy to be in familiar surroundings again. Two weeks after he returned home, Cliff began his chemo. I was in the living room just watching some television. I had just put Tyra to bed and Kirk was in the bedroom reading. Cliff had just gotten out of the shower when I heard him yell out. “Dad! Dad!” I heard Kirk run up the hall and open the door to the bathroom. Then, there was nothing. I continued watching my show for another half an hour before realizing that neither had appeared from the bathroom yet. I decided to go investigate. The door to the bathroom was wide open and to my surprise I saw Kirk standing behind Cliff who had all his black curly hair lying at his feet. “What’s going on here?” I asked, hands on my hips. Kirk put the pair of scissors he had in his hand in the sink. “You seen the electric razor?” He asked. “Under the sink.” Kirk opened the cupboard doors and pulled out the electric razor kit. “Mom, my hair was falling out, so Dad suggested that we shave our heads…” “We?” I asked. “Yup,” Kirk said, “when I’m finished with his hair, he’s doing mine!” I just stood there watching, and sure enough, once Cliff was good and bald they traded places. I watched as each on of Kirk’s curls, the ones I loved so much, fell to the ground. And even though I had loved Kirk’s long hair, I loved what he was doing for our son even more. With every day that went by Cliff grew stronger and stronger. After about two months he went back into the studio and put down the final track on their demo. They were still thinking of a name for their band, and Cliff was beginning to get frustrated by it. But Kirk assured him he’d know which name was right for them. Cliff went back to school and his friends were all very happy to see him, though they were a little shocked by the new short hairstyle. The guys weren’t shocked by Kirk’s hair at all. They just sort of sighed and said ‘we were wondering when you’d do it again.’ Their new album was back on track and fans were sending their messages of support to Kirk during this difficult time. That meant a lot to him. Jason came around to see Cliff a lot and he was even starting to bring around his girlfriend. She was tall, blond and very pretty. Her name was Belinda. She seemed like the real beachy type. She was a nice girl, not incredibly loud, but not shy either. I adored her from the moment we met, we became instant friends. She was incredibly sweet and baby sat Tyra for us whenever we needed a sitter. “I’m thinking of getting serious with this one,” Jason told me one after. We were sitting on the porch drinking coffee while waiting for Cliff to come home from school. “How long have you been seeing her for?” I asked. “A few months, but I think she’s the one, I really do…” I was happy for Jason. He had been such a good friend for so long that he deserved to be with someone special. I smiled at him. “Honey, whoever makes you this happy is a keeper.” “Claire honey, can you come in here a minute!” Kirk yelled out to me from the bedroom. I walked in and he was lying on the bed looking up at me. “Any plans for the weekend baby?” “Nope, why’s that?” “Because we’re getting married…” |

CHAPTER 38 Kirk told me that we would not be getting married in the backyard, or anywhere local at that, so I should have my passport ready and take the Metallica Jet. All I had to do was sit back, relax and wait for my surprise. I went and brought a wedding dress; it was white with a long train and a beautiful veil. I had fallen in love with it the moment I saw it. I got Tyra ready and took her with me on the plane for some company as I didn’t know how long the trip was going to be. Cliff was going to stay with Kirk, apparently they had a lot to get organised and they’d meet us there. The plane trip was long and I had no idea where we were. Kirk had gone to a lot of trouble to keep this all a secret because as soon as Tyra and I arrived at wherever we were we were ushered into a car and taken to a hotel. It was night time so I really had no idea where we were. When we reached the hotel and went to our room. There was a note on the pillow. “Dear Claire, I hope you enjoy your suite, in the morning there will be many surprises waiting for you. You just sit back, relax, and enjoy yourself. Good night, I love you. Kirk” I put Tyra to bed and then I ordered some room service. I got some food and settled down in front of the television to watch some movies I had brought along with me. But it wasn’t long before I was sound asleep. I woke up in the morning to a knock at the door. I opened it and Francesca walked in. “I’ll go and get Tyra ready, all you have to do is get yourself ready. I’ll send in the hair and makeup people in around an hour, until then just relax.” I got Tyra out of the crib, gave her a kiss and handed her to Francesca. After Fran had left I had a nice long bath before the hair and make up people arrived. “We have only 2 hours to get you ready before you go off to get married, let’s make you irresistible, well even more irresistible.” When they had finished I look wonderful, so I slipped into my dress and sat down on the bed to put my shoes on. There was a knock at the door. “Come in!” I shouted. Cliff walked in. He was wearing his brand new tuxedo and he looked very handsome and all grown up. “Well I’m going to escort you to your wedding, Mom.” “Okay.” “But you have to wear this blindfold…” It was all very odd, but I agreed. “Oh, and you look amazing,” Cliff added. “Thank you, you look good too, very grown up.” I must have looked so silly, this woman in a wedding dress, blindfolded and being led to what seemed like the edge of the earth. We walked out the front door and across the road. Finally, Cliff took off my blindfold and there I was. It was such a beautiful place, flowers everywhere, everything in white, a bright blue sky and brilliant white clouds. I could see Kirk standing there in awe of me. He looked so incredibly handsome. Just like the first time we’d been married, in that exact same spot on that exact same beach. We were in Spain, to be married once more. But this time ALL our friends and family were there. Before I knew it we were up to our vows, we were telling everyone and each other how much we were in love, and that we always had been. Kirk had tears in his eyes, and so did I, it was a beautiful moment. At last we were married again, and we went back to the hotel for a fancy reception. Kirk had spared no expense making sure that this was the very best day of my life, and I loved him all the more for it, I loved him for making my day wonderful. We danced almost all night. Then Cliff offered to look after Tyra for the night so we could have some time to ourselves. We took him up on the offer only after he promised that he’d be very careful with her and that he’d call us if he had any problems and… I guess we were a little overprotective of our children at times. Kirk and I went up to the honeymoon suite, which was amazing. We talked for hours and it was such a beautiful night. We went on honeymoon in Spain, Cliff and Tyra went home to stay with Jason and his girlfriend Belinda. When we got home to San Francisco I had never been more in love with my husband. |

CHAPTER 39 “Kirk over here, after your sons brain tumour has he made a full recovery?” The press conference for their newest album had begun and the reporters seemed to be interested in everything but the album. “Kirk is it true that you have remarried your first wife?” “Kirk how do you feel about your sons close friendship with Jason Newsted?” Kirk was being bombarded by very personal questions. “Firstly, I would like to thank our fans for all their support during the past year. Yes, Cliff has made a full recovery and yes, I have married Claire. For all those who want to know if I’m angry about the friendship that has grown between my son and Jason, I’m not. I’m happy that my son has found someone that he can work with musically and also have a great friendship with. But we’re not here to discuss my personal life and the personal lives of my family. We’re here to discuss this new record, which I think is our best yet.” “Hands down our best yet, working with Rob was amazing,” James added. “So Rob had an active role in the making of this record?” A reporter asked. “We wanted it to be a real group project, like St. Anger was. This is an opportunity for us to work together and for us all to express ourselves. I mean if we had worked like this twenty years ago I would have been irate! I mean, no one commented on the lyrics but me, and no one talked about my rhythm guitar stuff but me. I guess we’ve really matured, and that’s obvious on the record.” “Lars, it’s rumoured that you’ve been dating a Danish actress is this true?” “I was expecting this,” Lars said with a laugh, “Connie and I have been seeing each other for a few months now. We have so much in common and it’s good to just sit there and babble away in our language and everyone else just have no idea what we’re saying! But seriously, yes, I have been dating a Danish actress.” “Rob, working with these guys, what’s it like?” “Well at first it was a little intimidating, I mean these guys are rock gods! But I’m use to it now, they’re more like family then work mates. We keep each in line, and the music we’ve come out with is great, in my opinion. Working with these guys is great, it’s a dream come true,” Rob said. “You going soft on us Rob?” James asked jokingly. “Nah man, perhaps it is you that is going soft…” The press conference continued with lots of laughs, lots of jokes, and lots of ground covered about the new album. The press seemed happy to hear that there would be a tour to support the new album. Kirk and I went home after the press conference, a couple of months had passed since we had officially become man and wife and we were enjoying being together. Cliff had looked after Tyra while Kirk and I were at the conference and he was waiting for us when we got home. “Tyra’s gone to sleep and Jason rang, the band’s getting together to pick a name tonight, can I go?” “Yeah sure thing,” Kirk replied, “jump in the car and I’ll give you a lift.” Kirk drove Cliff around to the Chophouse and I stayed home with my baby girl. I was going to let her sleep but she woke up shortly after the boys had left. I got her out of her crib and took her into the living room to watch some television with me. We watched Blue’s Clues and the Teletubbies before Kirk got home. Tyra didn’t speak yet, but I didn’t mind. I loved her company all the same. It was coming up to her first birthday, and we’d have a great party for her. After all, my little girl deserved to get the very best. |

Okay, here's a brand new chapter for y'all, I hope you enjoy it. CHAPTER 40 5 YEARS LATER "Mommy! Mommy! Mommy!" "What is it Tyra, Mommy's a little busy..." "Cliff's on the TV!" I turned around to take a quick look at the television, and sure enough there was my son on MTV news. "The next big thing in rock n' roll is this band right here, The Sadakos... featuring son of Kirk Hammett, Metallica's guitarist, The Sadakos will be taking their show to the people next month with their first national tour. We'll keep you posted on what's happening..." Five whole years had passed, Kirk and I were still happily married and our kids were both happy and healthy. Tyra had just started school and Kirk could not have been prouder. Cliff had got together with some friends from high school and started a band a few years ago and they were soon to hit the big time. They had taken their name from the Japanese version of the Ring, Cliff's favourite, and they were The Sadakos. Cliff was still great friends with Jason, in fact his band was signed to Newsted's record label, which was booming as well. Everything was looking up. Lars had married his sweetheart Connie and they'd had a baby girl, Hannah, who was now three. Tyra adored Hannah and they were inseperable. James was still sober, and having no problems. He was enjoying spending lots of time with his wife and kids. I had always known that he would make a great father one day. Rob and his wife had another baby boy, Danny, who was now two. He was so chubby and adorable. I loved giving him cuddles, and I think Kirk was a little worried for a while that he thought that I would never give him back, but I always did. Jason and Belinda got married, but Jason wasn't ready for children. Belinda didn't mind though, because she was happy just to have him. They were so cute together, it was adorable. As for Metallica, they'd released another album, gone on an international tour, released another live album, were inducted into the Rock n Roll hall of fame, and were planning to head back into the studio at the end of the year. There was no stopping them. The phone rang, Kirk wondered out from the living room and answered it. "Hey son... yeah we miss you too... the album is great... all the guys have a copy... it's constantly played at HQ... no I'm not lying... you're 21st... sure we'll be there... of course... and the tour... we'd love to see you play... again... okay... we love you son... alright... bye..." "Good morning Tyra, Cliff says hello..." "HELLO CLIFF!" "Good morning wife, your son says hello...." "HELLO SON!" Ever since Cliff had gone to the studio we hadn't gotten much time to talk to him, he had about 10 minutes free time to talk on the phone each day so, and this was Tyra's cute idea, one of us would talk on the phone and then afterwards the speaker would relay the messages and we'd all say hello to Cliff. "So what's happening with the boy?" I asked. "Well, as you know he won't be a boy much longer and so we have a 21st to plan, well we would have had a 21st to plan, but he already did, so we have a 21st to go to. Also his band is touring, so we'll have to catch up with him when he's in town... though I would love to go for the whole tour...." "Kirk, no, this is Cliff's tour, we see two shows tops and then let him have his freedom..." "But Claire..." "No buts honey, he's a man now, we gotta let him leave the nest..." "I don't want to leave the nest daddy..." Tyra added. Kirk grinned. "Good, cause you're not allowed!" He said hugging her. "Now how about we go and get some pancakes for breakfast!" |
