Is that your answer to everything? Kill of one of the characters? An update is on the way. This one's pretty long. CHAPTER 45 The next morning the phone calls started. "Your work is a huge success, can we get an interview?" There was only one interview that I was willing to do. "One of the biggest movies today is 'Escaoe - Metallica's Beginning.' It's the highest grossing movie of the year and critics are saying it's passionate story and candid revelations about the rockstars we think we know makes this movie the best in a very long time. Today on the show we have the movie's writer, she's funny, she's talented, and she's married to Kirk Hammett, who is also here. Cliff Hammett who plays Kirk, his father, in the movie was the stand out in the film, and he is here too. Plus the rest of Metallica, it's going to be a huge show!" We were on the Oprah show. Oprah, like Metallica, was now in her 50s, but still on the air, and still a hot show. My guilty secret was that I use to watch Oprah on the days that Tyra was at school and Kirk was working. I came out first, to the applause of the crowd. I sat on that famous couch where so many had sat before me. "So, Claire, what do you think about the movie?" Oprah asked me. "I never thought it would be this big, I thought a few people would see it and then it would be forgotten." "Well that certainly hasn't happened." "But seriously, it's a deep insight into my personnal life, and my early relationship with Kirk. It was my story to tell, and with my husbands blessing, I told it." "And how has your relationship with Kirk been over the years?" "Our relationship was, as you saw, unstable in the 80s, terrible in the early 90s, and then I left. I found out I was pregnant after I left, but by that stage it was too late, he was so into drugs and I was already living in Australia..." "And when did Kirk come back into your life?" "Early 2004, he looked me up when he was making ammends with those he'd well wronged back in the day, and I was one of those people. That was also the day he met his son, Cliff." "And how was that?" "Cliff and Kirk meeting? Well Cliff was such a HUGE fan of Kirk before hand, and he was like 'Kirk Hammett in my living room' and then slowly the pieces began to fall into place, and he knew. He was angry for a while, but I think he understood. Then we moved back to San Fransisco, moved in with Kirk, and you know how it goes." The interview went on asking about my regrets, the highs and lows of being one of the first-ladies of metal, and all about my children. After we were finished Kirk was brought out onto the stage. "Kirk it's great to have you on the show," Oprah said. "It's great to be here, surprising, but great." "Never thought you'd be here?" "We're a huge metal band and we're constantly being accused of selling out. Some Kind of Monster got that ball rolling in all honesty. And so when these kids see their metal 'gods' on the Oprah show they say we've sold out." "Have you sold out?" "This is for my wife, and for her work, sure it's our story but we wanted to do this for her, and that's why we're here." "You're a very private person aren't you Kirk?" Oprah asked him. "Yes, and there were a few issues for me with this film, especially about my drug use. But this was something my wife wanted, and so I put my bad feelings aside and she went with it, and it's a huge success." Kirk and Oprah continued to discuss the highlights of his career and what he loved about being a father, though Kirk refused to get into the details about his childrens private life stating that Tyra is just a normal little girl, and that you can ask Cliff yourself. And with that Cliff made his way onto the stage. "Cliff, wow, you were compelling in Escape, I couldn't take my eyes off you." "Thank you." "Let me show the audience a picture of your father Kirk at age 21 during the recording of Kill Em All, and here's Cliff in the movie." The audience was stunned, they looked so much alike. "So, how did you find it working on the movie?" "Well at first I had to get use to not looking over whenever someone said Cliff because they might be talking to me, they might just be saying their lines. I also had to come to terms with the fact that this was my parents lives, this wasn't just something my mum made up one day. And that was hard. I worked with some wonderful people, it was so much fun, it was so fantastic." "So movies or music?" Kirk asked. "Dad you know the answer, music forever, guitar is my passion." "And we hear you're marrying your long time girlfriend Angel, are the rumours true?" "I am engaged to Angel, yes." The interview continued with Oprah asking the three of us about Cliff's previous health condition, how we felt about him touring, and how do we all keep in touch. Then it was the Metallica interview. "They're the biggest selling rock artists with the most records sold worldwide, more then any other band. They have been working for over 30 years, with many different line up changes. Here for the first time ever we have an interview with Metallica and Jason Newsted. Please welcome James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Rob Trujillo, Jason Newsted and please welcome back to the show, Kirk Hammett." The applause was insane. "Okay, everyone comfortable, I shouldn't be putting people in certain places so there's no tension?" Oprah asked. She was looking at James and Jason, who were sitting right next to each other. "Nah, we're perfectly happy to sit next to each other," Jason replied. "We're buddies now," James added. "Do you think you're better friends now then you were when Jason was in Metallica?" Oprah asked. "I'll take this one," Lars took over, "I think we all get along better now because we're all a little more ahh... mature and we've learnt to deal with the lose of Cliff Burton in a more healthy way." "Yeah, we expected Jason to replace Cliff, and of course he never could, we expected way too much," Kirk added. "I definantly like these guys better now," Jason had to get his word in. "Rob, I saw Claire Hammett gave you a part in Escape, yet obviously there wasn't a Rob in Metallica at that time, why are you a part of the movie?" Oprah asked. "Well Claire said that Metallica isn't just the four of us who play right now. Metallica is and always will include those who stay with us through the journey. Rob is a part of any Metallica project because he's a part of ou family," James explained. "Is Jason a part of the family?" Oprah asked. "Of course, why even ask?" Lars found the question quite annoying. The interview was really fun and the guys enjoyed themselves. After the show we were sitting in a restaurant when someone came up with a letter and handed it to James. "Metallica," James read the letter aloud, "I was a big part of the beginnings of Metallica and you left me out of your movie. We need to talk. Dave Mustaine....." |

CHAPTER 46 James pulled out his cell phone and started dialling. "James what are you doing? You and Dave haven't spoken in years... and... Wait! How do you have his number?" Lars said angrily. "Hey, Dave. I see you've seen the movie now... Well, seeing as this isn't so much our story as it is Claire's... yes... that's right... we didn't write it because it was her story... of course... that sounds good." James hung up the phone. "How do you have his number?" Lars asked, James hadn't answered him yet. "After rehab, all those many years ago, Dave and I got in touch and had a conversation. We're not friends but we'll talk occassionally." "Who knew about this?" Lars said looking at Kirk and Jason angrily. "They didn't know Lars, no one but me and my lady new about it. It was important for us to talk." "So, what did he say?" Kirk asked. One arm around me, he was holding me close. Kirk was always so warm. "Well, he wants to meet. With all of us." "We're not doing it!" Lars demanded. "Yes Lars, we are." Jason said. "You never met the man, you don't know what he's like!" Lars was getting pretty angry by this stage. "Well," Jason sighed "That's not exactly true. After I left Metallica Dave got in contact with me. We hung out for a little while, and then we just sort of lost touch." "Okay then, well let's not argue about this. We probably should have sat down together as a group and talked with Dave a long time ago. When does he want to meetup with us?" Kirk asked, again being the peacemaker. "Tonight, not far from here actually." So, we went togther. James, Lars, Rob, Jason, Kirk, Cliff and me. We walked down to this tiny little diner. It was dimly lit and there was only one waitress working. Our interview had been one of those prime-time shows, so it was filmed at night. We walked in and there he was. Sitting at the back table with a cup of coffee in front of him and the paper spread out across the table. "Hey Dave," James said. He looked up and smiled. "It's been a while, we haven't seen each other in person since..." "The 1994 Grammy awards." "And you've brought the whole family..." Dave said, half sarcastically. "Dave, you know Lars, Kirk and Jason." James said. Dave nodded. "This is Rob..." "Hey." "Kirk's eldest son, Cliff..." "Nice to meet you." "And Kirk's wife Claire." "You left me out of the movie." "You don't waste any time do you?" I said. We all sat down. Cliff ordered a stack of pancakes but no one else had anything to eat. "The thing is Dave," I began, "This wasn't so much of a Metallica story, as it was the story of my life, and my Metallica." Kirk was holding my hand underneath the table. "I'm not saying you weren't a part of Metallica..." James gave me that look like he should probably take over, so I let him. "I think what Claire is trying to say, and she can correct me if I'm wrong, you're a part of the Metallica family, and she didn't mean to offend you, but this was the story of her life. You weren't deliberately left out." Dave looked at me with a sort of half smile. "I overreacted, I'm sorry." "It's okay. But I'm a little thrown by this, from what I've heard..." I begun, but Dave put his hand up indicating for me to stop. "It's not just these guys who have matured. Hey, Cliff." Cliff looked up from his pancakes, he seemed pretty hungry. "You were great in the movie, and you're an awesome guitar player." "Thanks man, I saw you guys in Australia when I was like 13. Megadeth was awesome!" Cliff replied. "Yeah, I was sad to see it go, but I had to move on." "I heard you write a column for Guitar World magazine now," Jason said. "Yeah, yeah, amongst some other projects I've got going." "Well you're doing well for yourself," Lars said. "You should come on by while we're recording the next album!" Rob suggested. "The Metallica and Friends album?" Kirk asked. "Yeah! I just had an amazing idea! We've got Cliff down for one track, and Claire is doing one as well. Why not get Dave and Jason in on it too?" Rob said, his voice was filled with excitment. "Mom, you can play?" Cliff looked at me with a rather confused expression on his face. "Yeah, we're doing like a slower sort of thing, your mother can play violin. She's really very good." "Okay, okay, it's settled. Dave and Jason will record with Metallica," Lars said. "Recording begins next month." |
