Sweet...I wonder what will be the "device" lars and kirk have been looking for so long.... [Ellefson is scared :0] Edited by Achernar, June 27, 2012, 12:26 am.

Ha I thought it'd take them a few chapters to get there. Wonder what's that other side... I keep imagining some sunny awesome beach to contrast with the dark side.

Hey guys - I'd just like to say - thank you so much for keeping reading. And I apologise for my lack up updating, real life has been hectic, comprising of: pub quiz, ballet, funeral, wedding shopping, house stuff. Busy busy busy. Oh and throw in work as well for good measure and there we are! The five of them staggered slightly, blinking, trying to shield their eyes against the sudden overwhelming brightness. Squinting, shielding their eyes from the sun they looked around, taking a few seconds to get used to the sunlight. Kirk stared around in shock. Blue sky stretched seemingly forever, almost entirely cloudless, the sun streaming down on them, warm, comfortable. Green fields stretched away into the distance, small lanes with high hedges dividing them up in a rolling patchwork. In the distance there was a small village, the spire of the church rising above the other buildings around it. It was a peaceful, rural scene, the type of scene that they had never seen before, one that they had only ever seen in pictures and films. Lars swallowed hard, looking around. “Where the fuck are we?” He asked, staring across at Kirk who just shook his head slowly, looking around, taking in the vista before them. “I have no idea I’m afraid. This is now new territory to me as well.” He replied, voice cool and calm. James turned around, looking behind them at where they had come through. There was nothing there save a hedge, leading on to more fields and another village a couple of miles down the road. “There’s no fucking way back.” He stated, voice suddenly harsh, blue eyes showing a slight flicker of fear, shoved down hard so that nobody else would know that it had been there. Almost instantly the others turned as well, looking behind them, feeling a sinking feeling of dread. The doorway was gone, there was nothing save the leafy green hedge behind them, old gnarled twigs knotted together, rising out of the thickly grassed verge at the side of the dusty roadway on which they stood. Jason felt a cold prickle of fear run down his back, where they were was beautiful, so different to the world that they knew, but it wasn’t home, wasn’t where they came from and he knew that really, he wanted to be able to return. Kirk frowned and shook his head. “There must be a way back. We’re just not currently seeing it. There will be something.” With that he started looking down at the verge, then to the hedgerow, sharp eyes taking everything in. Even as he did, he couldn’t help noticing the warm sun on his back, the heady fresh air, untainted by the stench of pollution, dry and dead, instead, this was like a rich wine, scented with hot grass, dust and flowers that grew in proliferation in the grass beneath his booted feet. Suddenly it clicked and he laughed, pointing down at a grey stone set into the verge. “That’s our way home?” “That?” Asked Rob, one eyebrow raised as he looked back at him. “Bit small.” “Ha, fucking ha.” Retorted Lars. Kirk shrugged. “It’s an old milestone. They used to use these as markers along roads. Usually said how far it was to the nearest town or village. This one, as you can see is slightly different. It has on the same numbers as were written on that panel in the mine. This will open the portal to take us back again.” “So where the fuck are we?” Asked James, accepting the explanation, but wanting to know more. “I think,” began Kirk slowly, “and this is just remembering what I had read, things that are beginning to make more sense now as we move through, that it’s not where, so much as when.” “You’re shitting me.” Said James flatly, eyes narrowed as he looked at Kirk. “No, no I’m not. I believe that we are in exactly the same place that we were, but many, many centuries in the past. We’re in what would be England back then, a separate country. Long, long before the countries unified into one planet when we began populating the further and further reaches of space. So, I believe I know where we are, as to when we are is another matter entirely.” “So where the fuck are we going to find the device then?” Asked James, frowning. “We’re in another time, we don’t have any links to the technology that we had...” “None at all. I do not even know if there are computers in this time.” Replied Kirk calmly. “But, I have memorised as much of the research that I did as I could, and made notes on a lot more of it. I have kept those notes in my pocket so we at least have that to refer to. We have a method for getting back. So we are not in a bad situation. We just need to start by figuring out when we are, so that at least we know what is happening in the world around us, what parameters we will need to work within.” Lars nodded, feeling again the vulnerability of not having information at a thought as he had before, not being able to find the back up in the cyber world that he had half lived in for so long. He felt almost naked, too exposed. “Let’s get on with it then. We’ll head down to that village.” He said, voice hard, staccato. Robert shrugged. “As good an idea as any. I think we should conceal our weapons though, at least until we know what’s happening.” Even as he spoke there was a droning rumble in the air, the sound of powerful engines overhead. High above them planes, flying in formation headed across the sky, flying low, streaking back to base. The five men below stared up at them. “What the hell are those?” Asked James, frowning as he watched them heading out into the distance. Jason stared after them, brow furrowed. “I think I have an idea. They’re planes alright, but they’re fighters. Spitfires.” “How do you know that?” Asked Lars, looking right at him, head slightly on one side. “I’ve always had a thing about historical planes. Kinda a hobby of mine I guess. Used to build loads of models when I was a kid, going back over the centuries all the way until the space craft and fighters we have.” “Remind me again why you joined the army side of the Force?” Asked Rob, a low chuckle spilling past his lips. “Like to keep my feet on the ground. Planes are beautiful though.” Replied Jason with a shrug. “When does that put us then?” Asked James suspiciously. “It puts us back in World War II.” Said Jason quietly. “You’re fucking kidding me?” Asked Lars, knowing what the answer would be, but still retaining some hope that there was another way, that Jason was wrong. Kirk shook his head. “I think that Jase is right. And that does make sense in a lot of ways. That was when this thing disappeared. So we’ve obviously come back to the right place to find it. If you think about it, it disappearing could be because we found it and took it.” “Not time travel paradox crap.” Said Rob, covering his face with one hand. “After the last couple of days, I don’t think that I can quite handle that sort of thing.” Kirk suddenly laughed, the easy, warm sound transforming him from his usual icy self into something else, something that he had been a long time before. “I have a horrible feeling that it might be the case though, so I’m rather afraid you’ll have to handle it.” James looked at the two of them. “My history is shit, especially when it comes to stuff that happened hundreds of years ago. Okay, I get there’s a fuck off big war on, and there are good sides and bad sides. Where does the device fit into all of this then? Who has it?” “Honestly, I can’t say for sure. But I’m pretty certain, as near as I can be that it is in the hands of the bad guys, let’s put it that way for now.” “What a surprise.” Muttered Lars, looking across at Kirk. “Look, the research I did narrowed down where it is being stored, or at least, who has it.” “And how the fuck are we going to get to it?” Retorted Lars, eyes narrowed. “It’s not like I can hack into shit and get through security for you any more is it?” Jason chuckled. “Don’t worry about that, computers haven’t even really been invented yet. Everything’s manual.” Lars sat down on the grass verge, feeling sick to the pit of his stomach. This was so far removed from everything that they had known that he couldn’t help the feelings of nausea that roiled through him at it all. He scrubbed his hands over his face, feeling Kirk crouch beside him, one hand lightly touching his back. “We’ll get home again, Uli, don’t worry about it.” “For now though we join up with whatever fuckin’ army they got going and blast our fuckin’ way to this device, and bring it back with us.” Stated James, certainty echoing in his voice. |

I'm glad that just a couple of people are reading it! I guess it's not really too many people's cup of tea - but that's all good, you like what you like, right?
