I've been playing since I was 13... so that's about 3 years now. :) And I didn't go to any classes or anything, I learn all by myself and I like it that way! :nanner:
I have 2 guitars for now. Classical one (my first guitar), parents bought me that one cuz they taught I'll never know how to play anything on guitar. but they were wrong. :biggrin
and I have black flying V! But it's not oryginal... :(
How 'bout u? :)

Ah cool! :D
I also learned how to play by myself. I didn't wanna get lessons because I figured the stuff you have to play there is boring, and I wanted to play Metallica right away. Of course it was not so easy, but after some time I managed to get some stuff right.
I've been playing for 5 and a half years now. I don't play acoustics. My first guitar was a white Flying V (also not original, but still great) and I have 3 Explorers now, one of them is a Gibson, and one of them is handmade by myself. :)

Post pics of your V! :D

Hmm, I think I had a cool teacher then. It really depends on the teacher.
I wasn't into metal back then, when I began playing (4 years ago). But the first 2 songs I learned were Anouk - Michel and Krezip - I Apologize. I'm still proud of that.
But then my teachers stopped, and I got another teacher. What a difference! I switched to bass, and he would find out the bass parts for songs I would choose, but he couldn't hear some of the cool bass licks.
One time, I was at a lesson, and I went: "I heard a bass lick there. It's supposed to be there." And he said (while I was trying to figure it out): "Oh, I didn;t hear it. I'll listen later." He couldn't finish his sentence, because I interrupted him: "Nevermind. I've already found it out myself."

How glad I am I've quit my lessons

Same here... I didn't want to learn how to play something that I don't like and what's boring to me...
Wow! :o
You made your own Explorer!! Cool! :nanner: So tell me, how much did it cost you? Is it difficult and complicated? I want Explorer or Gibson SG so bad... :horns2
Awh, it would be great if I could made one by myself... But, I don't think so that I would make it... :(

Hey that's a cool pic! :D
My own Explorer was 530 EU to make. And yeah, it was pretty difficult. I don't have a lot of tools and I pretty much had no proper work space at all. So it took 9 months to make it.
I'm now building a Les Paul. It's one of the hardest guitars to build, so it's a real challenge.

Well yeah I like my handbuilt Explorer, but it's not THE best. It has it's own sound, like all the other guitars have their own sound. Overall, the Gibson remains the best. The Explorer is made of Alder and the neck is Maple with Ebony board.
Well I guess it's time for pics... :P

The body is stained in walnut colour. The Alder is yellow on it's own, but I wanted it to be darker.

Thanks for the well wishes on my Les Paul. I hope it will be finished SOMEDAY. I'll show it here when it's finished.

Well the body came from ebay...but the body is actually pretty easy to make (I've made more guitars before this one). I got it from ebay because it had the exact same shape as James' guitars (it's different from the Gibson). I would have loved to make the body myself but I didn't had the dimensions for the James shape back then.
I had to build a neck for it myself. A neck may LOOK easy and simple, but you have to remember I had to make it from just a piece of raw wood. It was all curved and shit and it even had some old skin from the tree on it. :D Too bad I didn't take pics of how that looked like. It's actually pretty amazing that it became a guitar.

My friend's day built a guitar at home once. It was something like Explorer, but not as good as yours. And he screwed up the neck, and the frets weren't in right order, so it didn't sound well. (ofc)
I can imagine that it was hard to build the neck, I mean it's not just one straight wood...
well maybe you can picture the wood of Les Paul that you're making now. :)

The body wood (2 piece). It's mahogany

There is also a carved maple top going on top of that. But it's not ready to be glued yet.

And here is the 'paddle', the neck. Which is in the clamps because I just glued the angled piece to it here.
