Chapter 67

That evening, the rest of the band, along with their wives and children, gathered in the healer's chamber. Kilwich stood before them, clad in the silver and purple robes. He took out the Clach Na Bratach, setting it upon its stand.

"Master Burton, what did you hear the laird and his son say?", he asked.

"They were talking about Charles Stuart, the heir to the throne. Conor wants the clan to join the rebellion, but the laird said no. I got a bad feeling about this", he replied, frowning.

"I ken. The Stuart prince is but a boy, and he has spent too much time in France and in Rome, he is barely Scottish. I am afraid that the rebellion will be unsuccessful", replied Kilwich.

Daniel frowned. "Aye, 'tis true. I hear of rebellions in Ireland that go nowhere, because the Crown's soldiers put them down quickly. The same can happen here in Scotland. I have found peace, I do not want war", he said, his eyes sad.

"We know, dude. Wasn't there a big battle and the Crown won? It began with a C", said James.

"Culloden, it was the battle of Culloden in 1746. I saw a show on PBS about it", replied Cliff.

"So what do we do? Conor's out of his fucking mind", muttered Lars.

"Colorful way of saying it, but I ken. I will consult the Clach", said Kilwich, standing over the stone.

He murmured the incantation, as the mists parted. A vision appeared before them. A plain was surrounded by government troops, Highland soldiers caught in the crossfire.

Everyone gasped. The government troops slew them without mercy, as wounded men were cut down with bayonets and muskets. They could almost hear the screams of the dying, the roar of the cannon. Then the mists reappeared, the stone shrouded in darkness once more.

"What the fuck was that?!", exclaimed James.

"That was the battle Master Burton spoke of. Was that here? And what about the people themselves?", asked Kilwich.

Cliff closed his eyes, remembering what he knew from the show. "The government troops were all over mainland Scotland. They ravaged the countryside, killed a lot of people. Scotland was defeated", he murmured, as Morag cried out.

"Laddie, 'tis trouble. I shall speak to the laird, convince Conor not to go. If he cannot, we shall have to flee. And since there is no red sky nor blue moon for a long while, ye cannot go back to the stones. I am sorry, but we shall have to flee the country", replied Kilwich.

The group was silent, taking in the information. Are we gonna be stuck here forever?, thought Kirk. He felt depressed at the idea of never seeing his mother again. But no matter what, I'm not leaving behind Mary and Keith, he vowed.

"I must speak to the laird on the morrow. I have an idea, but all I can say now is to stay on your toes, it will require a lot of preparation", he said enigmatically.

Chapter 68

"Your Lordship, I must speak with you. 'Tis urgent", said Kilwich.

The laird nodded, leading them to his private chambers. He closed the door behind him, placing a single white rose on the table. "All we are to speak of is subrosa", he murmured.

Kilwich sat down, taking a deep breath. "Your Lordship, I consulted the Clach Na Bratach last night. Conor is wrong, you must stop him", he murmured.

"What do you mean? The Stuart is not going to win?", he asked.

"Worse. The government will send many troops to quell the rebellion. And there will be reprisals on our people. You must stop Conor, before it is too late", he said.

Just then, Conor burst into the room. He scowled when he saw Kilwich. "Father, must you listen to this doddering old man? The Stuart prince is coming to Mackenzie lands. We shall fight in his service, and overthrow the bleedin' German king", he said proudly.

"Young Mackenzie, believe me, do not join the Stuarts. We shall be defeated, and lose everything. The Clach Na Bratach revealed everything", said Kilwich.

"Father, you believe that? Only the ignorent and peasants trust in visions seen in a hunk of stone", he said, his eyes glowing with pride.

"Laddie, you forget I am the laird here. I say no, I dislike the king in London as well, but as they do not bother us, we shall not make war on them. Is that clear?", he asked, looking into his eyes.

"I shall go to the clan themselves. Let us see what they think", he said in a huff, walking away.

"I am sorry, Papa. Conor is just so hard headed", said Violet.

"I know. We are fucked. Why doesn't the laird just beat some sense into him? He's within his rights", muttered Lars.

"Yeah, someone should've smacked him upside the head. He's not a bad dude, but he wants to look like a big man. He's gonna get his ass handed him to him on a platter", grumbled James.

"Kilwich, what's your plan to get us out of here?", asked Cliff. He closed his eyes, remembering the scene from the night before.

"Be patient. You will flee, but you shall companions. You see, the laird's younger brother went into the shipping business. A branch of the Mackenzie family settled in Norway a hundred years ago, after one of our ancestors married a Norwegian woman. They own a shipping business, and he joined it, him being a younger son.

I will tell the laird that you wish passage aboard his brother's ship. Of course, you will have pay him, and you might have to tell him everything. And of course, you take your families with you", said Kilwich.

"If we leave for Norway, we won't be able to get back to the stones", said Kirk worriedly.

"I know, Master Hammett. I am truly sorry. But if you stay here, you will be caught in the fighting, as will your families", he whispered.

Kirk looked at his wife and son. The idea of them being hurt during the war angered him. No way. I'm going to Norway with them. I don't want get stuck here, but I don't want them to get hurt either. I'll do it, he vowed silently.

Damn poor Kirk. He might never see his mom again. I wish he could have taken them back with him away from the fighting.
I wonder what the others will do.

Chapter 69

James stared into the fire, his expression brooding. He was thinking about what Kilwich had said, the visions in the crystal ball.

Damn, we gotta get out of this place. We gotta tell the laird, and we may end up in Norway. We may never get back to the 20th century. This is all fucked, he thought.

"James, the children are worried. Come to bed", murmured Jeanie.

He sighed, his head in his hands. "Jeanie, I'm just concerned about all this. You saw what was in the ball, a lot of bad shit is gonna happen. And if we flee to Norway, we may never get back to the 20th century", he said.

"James, what are you worried about? You do not have family back in your time. And what about us? Would you abandon us?", she asked.

James turned to face her, hurt in his eyes. "What? Do you think I'm like my dad? I will never abandon you, you're my wife and I would never leave my kids behind. What kind of man do you think I am?", he growled.

Jeanie flushed guiltily. "I am sorry, James. But I am concerned, you seem so eager to go back", she replied.

He sighed. "I miss my friends, I miss being in a band. Before all this, Metallica was my life. I'm not sure if we can just step back into our old lives, after spending three years here. I don't know what to think", he muttered, his face in his hands.

"Maybe, this is all part of God's plan. Sometimes He has a plan for all of us. Perhaps you were sent back for a reason", she said thoughtfully.

"Yeah, maybe you're right", he replied.

"Papa, you not sleepy?", asked Parlan, clutching a stuffed dog.

James smiled at his son. "I'm fine, I'm just worried, son. I'm going to sleep now", he said, leading his son to the room.

Cliff was wide awake in bed, unable to sleep. He could feel Morag in the bed next to him, her soft breathing the only sound in the room.

What the hell are we going to do? If we stay, we'll get caught in a war. And if we flee, we may never go back. Now what?, he thought.

Morag stirred in her sleep, slowly opening her eyes. "Cliff, are ye all right?", she murmured sleepily.

Cliff blushed guiltily. "Sorry, Morag. I was just thinking about what Kilwich said", he murmured.

"I ken. If we must flee, I do not want the children to get hurt", she said, a hint of anger in her voice.

"Yeah, I know. If anything were to happen to you or Penny or Sebastian, I don't know what I'd do. I couldn't live with myself if something happened to you guys", he said, embracing her.

Just then, the baby started to cry. "Aye, Sebastian is hungry again", she chuckled.

They walked into the other bedroom, as Morag picked up their son. Sebastian stopped crying when she put him to her breast.

Cliff smiled at the scene. Morag sat in a chair, as she nursed their son. Sebastian had his parents' red hair and his hazel eyes. He drank greedily, making loud slurping noises.

Morag burped him and set him back in the crib, putting a blanket on him. "Good night, me handsome boyo", she whispered, kissing his cheek.

I'm glad that James wants to be there for his family. I like him in this.

I hope they can either flee or better yet take their new families back with them to the 20th century. Either way this is a very good read and I'm eager to see what's going to happen. :horns2

Chapter 70

The next morning, the entire group, along with their wives and children, accompanied Kilwich to the laird's chambers. "Your Lordship, we have something to say to you", he said, smiling reassuringly at the group.

James and Lars stepped forward, bowing before him. "Your Lordship, we are not really from the colonies, we are from the future. It is a long story", said James, explaining everything.

When he finished, the laird sat back in his chair, a thoughtful expression on his face. "That is a very interesting story, Master Hetfield and Master Ulrich. I had an inkling you were not quite from the colonies, and here is the proof. Since you have performed well in my service with great loyalty, I shall not hold that against you. And what is Master Kilwich said true? That the Stuart army will be defeated?", he asked.

"Yes, your Lordship. They will be defeated horribly, and many clansmen will be reduced to poverty. Many people will flee to the colonies, and others will be driven off their lands", said Cliff solemnly.

"Can we stop it?", he asked.

"I'm afraid not. You can't change these things, only little things. I mean, it would be cool if we could stop World War II, but it ain't gonna happen", said James.

The laird looked thoughtful. "If the war is inevitable, there must be a way to save at least some members of the clan. My brother runs a shipping company in Norway. His ship has landed in Inverness, and sails within a fortnight.

I want to send the younger members of the clan with him, if their families approve. You and your families shall accompany them to Bergen. My brother shall watch over them, until either it is safe to return, or the Stuarts somehow win. At least they shall be out of harm's way", he said.

Violet sat in her chair, nursing Beatrice, her mind in turmoil. I am finally going to leave Mackenzie lands, but we are fleeing from a war. I am not sure if I shall ever see Scotland again, she mused.

"I know, Violet. But you'll finally get your wish. Too bad your dad doesn't want to go", he said, putting an arm around her.

"I understand, Lars. Did you feel the same way when you left Denmark?", she asked, putting Beatrice down in her crib.

"Yeah, I missed my friends, my family, my school even. But I was also excited. I had always wanted to see California, and then there I was", he chuckled.

"I am excited a wee bit. I shall finally get to see more of the world, but under less than favorable circumstances", she replied sardonically.

I liked how Lars can understand Violet's sadness over leaving her country because he had to leave Denmark at one point. It's cool how you take 2 characters from 2 different time periods and make them feel the same emotions. :dance

Can't wait for the next bit.

Chapter 71

Cliff was at home with Morag and the kids, when someone knocked on the door. He was surprised to see Daniel, as he stepped aside to let them in.

"Welcome, Master Connolly. Can I get you a glass of tea?", asked Morag.

"Aye, thank you, Mistress Burton", he replied graciously.

"So, why'd you come by, Mustaine?", asked Cliff.

Daniel sat down, a slight smile on his lips. "I shall like to meet this Mustaine fellow, it would be good to know if I have other kin".

His expression grew serious. "Master Burton, I want you to take Annaly with you to Norway. I want her safe", he said.

"What about Amy and Rory?", he asked.

"Amy does not want to be parted from Rory. I told her she would be safe, but she will not listen. At least one of my children shall be safe", he murmured.

Morag served them their tea and discreetly left. "Bummer, you gotta talk to your wife. And Annaly wouldn't want to be separated from you. You guys are really close", said Cliff, sipping his tea.

He sighed, staring into his cup. "Aye, I ken. But I want her safe. I consider msyelf to be a good Christian man, but I cannot ignore the visions in the stone. I will fight for my clan, but I want Annaly far from this. I have found peace, only to be plunged into another war", he murmred.

"That sucks. I wish you luck, Daniel. Hopefully you'll get out in one piece, and Annaly isn't gonna be too pissed at you", said Cliff.

Daniel drank the rest of his tea, shaking his hand. "Aye, I hope so too, Cliff. May God be with you", he said, walking out the door.

"Papa, we leaving?", asked Parlan.

James smiled at his son, hoisting him onto his shoulders. "Yes, son. We will have to leave. But it'll be like an adventure, and we'll be safe", he said.

"Papa James, I am staying here. I shall fight for the clan, I am not a bairn who will run", said Liam defiantly.

"Liam, that's your decision. But don't you want to go with your family? Don't you want to come?", he asked.

"I shall miss ye, ye are a father to me, Papa James. But I am not a spalpeen, I am a man. A man must go into battle and defend his people", he said proudly.

"Okay, and what about Sorcha?", asked James.

"Next year, we shall wed. I will be old enough, and I shall have coin, Papa James", he said.

"I shall miss ye, Liam", said Jeanie, embracing him.

"Me too", he whispered, a tear forming in his eye.
