Chapter 139 "Too bad Saul didn't want to come with us", said Lars. "Today, he is visiting Miriam's family. It was nice of him to let us go anyway", said Sean. "Ja, I understand. I wish I could court a woman", said Leif sadly. "Hey, you got laid twice on this trip, that's more than the rest of us", joked Dave. Saul had given them direction and said to enjoy themselves. Sean, Lars, Dave, and Leif were in Gamla Stan, walking down the crowded streets and people watching. "Oh look, there are some musicians setting up", said Leif in delight. "Cool", chuckled Lars, as they walked over. A crowd had gathered around a makeshift stage. A group of musicians dressed in gaudy peasant clothes checked on their instruments: a single drum, a lute, a flute, a recorder and a type of bagpipe. They played a lively song, as the singer began to sing. Sean, Lars and Leif all burst into laughter, their cheeks flushed with amusement. "What's so funny? I can't understand a damn thing", grumbled Dave. "It's about a guy who's got a crush on this hot chick, so he sneaks into her room, and they get it on. One night, he goes to her place starts getting it on. It's not her, it's her brother in drag. The brother chases him out of the house and wakes up everyone. They chase him into the woods, where he gets eaten by a bear", translated Lars, a grin on his face. "That's fucked. I can see why it's funny, though", he chuckled. While they watched the performance, Dave noticed something that caught his eye. A little boy dressed in expensive-looking clothes was being dragged by the hand by a shifty-eyed man in dirty clothes. The boy's eyes darted around nervously, a fearful look on his face. He excused himself and ran after them. "Hey asshole, let the kid go", he growled, grabbing the guy's arm. The man turned around abruptly, his eyes wide with fright. He took in Dave's height, red hair and angry look, slowly backing away. "Get lost, asshole, before I call the cops", he muttered. He smiled down at the boy, bending to his level. "Hey kid, where's your parents?", he asked. The boy looked at him blankely. "Crap, I forgot you don't speak English. I gotta talk to Lars", he muttered, taking the boy by the hand. "Hey Lars, someone tried to kidnap this kid. Can you speak to him?", he asked. "Hven stan det til?", asked Lars. "Min narn er Ragnor Lindh", he said quietly. "Hvor er heter Herr og Fru?", he asked. Ragnor's eyes filled with tears. "Shit, you lost your parents", he muttered. "From his clothes, I think his parents might be wealthy. We can leave him alone, we shall have to find them", said Sean. "We're gonna try to find your parents, kid", said Dave, as Lars translated. "Ja, tasen god", he said shyly. |

That chapter was most entertaining. I could just imagine the peasant musicians with their instruments. That song sounded most amusing. I hope Lars and Dave can escort that poor kid home if he's lost. He's sure going to learn a lot hanging around with them. Fabulous chapter!!!

Chapter 140 Dave took Ragnor by the hand, as they walked around Gamla Stan. Ragnor had visibly relaxed, starting to feel at ease. "So Ragnor, what happened with your parents?", asked Lars. "I was out with my nurse Sophie, when that man snatched me. I lost her", he whispered, tears filling his eyes. "Don't worry, kid. We'll find your nurse", said Dave reassuringlu. "Ja, we will find her", said Leif. "Who are you?", he asked. "I'm Lars Ulrich, and this is Sean Mackenzie, Dave Mustaine, and Leif Holmgren", he said. "Glad to meet you all", he said solemnly. "What are your parents like?", asked Leif, speaking slowly and carefully. "Mama and Papa are the Duke and Duchess of Jamtland, we are here because we have a house here", he said. "Wait a minute, your dad is a duke?", asked Dave in disbelief. "Are you English, Herr Mustaine? You are not Swedish", said Ragnor, puzzled. "I'm from America, kid", he said, as Lars translated. "That is so far. My uncle is in trade, he has an office in New York City", he said, his eyes wide. "Cool. We gotta get you back to your parents", said Lars. "Yeah, before they chop off our heads", joked Dave, as the others laughed weakly. An hour later, they still hadn't found a trace of his nurse. They were getting more and more frustrated, worried that they would get in trouble. "Sophie!", yelled Ragnor, as he ran over to a plump middle-aged woman. She was dressed in a simple gray dress, her graying hair tied back in a bun and concealed under a bonnet. "Ragnor, little lamb. Are you all right?", she asked, clasping him to her bosom. "Ja, Sophie. These men found me after an ugly man took me, they helped me find you", he said. "Sirs, I am so glad you have found him. I thought he was hurt by some pervert", she sighed. "It's nothing ma'am. We found him and we couldn't let him go like that", said Lars graciously. "The duke and duchess will be very pleased to meet you. Come with me", she said. |

Holy shit. They get to meet the duke. I wonder if they will get some sort of reward or token. I hope that Dave behaves himself though. For a minute I thought they were going to get on with the nurse Sophie, or at least that Leif was. Brilliant as always. |

This is where Ragnor's family lives: Kungsholmen Chapter 141 Sophie led them towards the district of Kungsholmen, where the wealthy lived. The group couldn't help but stare, especially Dave and Leif. The broad streets were lined with stately trees, the shop windows displaying luxury goods. Elegantly dressed ladies and gentlemen promenaded on the sidewalk, displaying their finery. "Wow, his parents must be loaded", murmured Dave. "Yeah, so behave yourselves", admonished Lars. They stopped in front of an elegant brick townhouse. It was three storeys high, made of warm red brick, the wooden shutters over the windows painted white. Over the door was the family coat of arms, a wolf with a sword in it's mouth. Sophie led them inside, as the butler stared at them. He quickly regained his composure, clearing his throat. "Hej, god middag", he said solemnly. "Henry, I need to speak to the mistress, and I would like for them to see her as well", she said. Henry gave a small bow, as he walked away. "Come inside, please take off your shoes, the floor was polished today", she said. They would have taken their shoes off anyway. The floor was made of gleaming white marble, streaked with pale pink stripes. The foyer itself was plain, but it led into a sumptuous parlor. The walls were painted cream, with several sofas covered in pale peach silk, topped with maroon velvet cushions. Thick maroon rugs covered the floor, maroon velvet drapes pulled back to reveal the sun coming through the windows. On a polished mahogany table sat a hand-blown crystal vase filled with tiny pink pearls. The chandelier was made of delicate crystal, white candles in its holders. "This is very beautiful", murmured Leif. "I know", whispered Sean. Henry reappeared with several pairs of fuzzy cream slippers. They quickly took off their shoes and put them on, as he led them further upstairs. They climbed the stairs to the second floor. Henry stopped before a closed door, discreetly knocking. They heard someone unlock it, as a middle-aged woman stepped out. She was tiny and delicate, wearing a silk gown the color of the palest silver. Her enormous powdered wig stood atop her head like snow about to fall downhill. Her face was heavily made up, the white facial powder contrasting with her red lips and black beauty mark. "Ragnor, who are these people?", she asked. "Mama, an ugly man took me from Sophie, and they found me and scared him off. Sophie insisted they come, that they deserved something", he said. "Gentlemen, I am very glad you have found my son. Would you like to take tea? We are already expecting guests", she said. "It would be an honor, madam", said Sean graciously. |

YES!!! More tea! Dave's going to drink more tea. You know that I like the thought of him drinking tea. You did FABULOUS with the description of the house. Wow. Especially this bit: several sofas covered in pale peach silk, topped with maroon velvet cushions. I could picture it all perfectly in my mind. It sounds like one of my students houses actually, and that vase with the pink pearls sounded gorgeous. Awesome writing!!! Most have more. |

Chapter 142 They all went downstairs to the parlor. "So what are your names, gentlemen?", she asked. "I am Sean Mackenzie, and these are my traveling companions Lars Ulrich, Dave Mustaine, and Leif Holmgren", he said politely. "I am not sure if Ragnor has mentioned it, but I am Marja Lindh, the Duchess of Jamtland. My husband Gustav is the Duke. My father is a count", she said. "Wow, I never met nobility before", chuckled Dave. "Where are you from, Herr Mustaine?", she asked. "I'm from America, my family originally came from Ireland", he explained. The duchess smiled at him. "My brother in law is a merchant in New York City. And where are the others from?", she asked. "Herr Holmgren and I are from the Bergen area. My father owns half of the Mackenzie-Bergstrom trading company, he was born in Scotland. Herr Ulrich is from Denmark. We are going to Finland on business", he replied. "I see. My family has property on the Aland Island. I have been to Turku, it is a very backwater place, barely fit to be called a capital. No culture whatsoever, and I cannot understand a word those Finns speak. I wish you luck gentlemen", she said. A maid placed a pot of tea and a plate of biscuits, cookies and sandwiches on the table, before discreetly leaving. Just then, the parlor door opened and two men stepped in. One of them was of average height, with short blond hair and a neatly trimmed goatee. He was dressed tight black breeches and an embroidered waistcoat, giving him an almost foppish appearance. The other man was dressed in a similar fashion, except he was a shade older, his blond hair turning gray. The duchess bowed deeply, as they followed suit, not wanting to look foolish. "Gustav, these men rescued Ragnor and brought him home. Gentlemen, this is my husband Gustav and our sovereign, King Frederik", she said. Damn, he's the king?, wondered Dave, a flush creeping up his neck. "I would like to thank you, gentlemen. Ragnor is my only son and heir", said Gustav solemnly. "We couldn't just let the pervert carry him off like that. There's a lot of sick people out there", said Lars. "Good for you, young man. Are you a father as well?", asked Frederik. "Yes, your majesty. My wife and I have a baby daughter, Beatrice. If anything were to happen to her, I'd kick their asses", he growled. "I understand the sentiment. And you have an accent, Herr Ulrich. Where are you from?", he asked curiously. "I was born in Copenhagen, but am currently living outside Bergen", he replied. "Herr Holmgren and I are also from around Bergen. My father owns half of the Mackenzie-Bergstrom trading company. We are on our way to Turku for both business and to visit my sister, your majesty", said Sean. "Good, you do not look like soldiers. I am very glad to make your acquaintance. Why are you visiting your sister? That is very far", he said. "Your majesty, this may not be suitable for women or children", whispered Sean. The king nodded, dismissing Ragnor and his mother. "What is the reason, Herr Mackenzie?", he asked. "My sister married the son of my father's partner, Thor Bergstrom. However, he is a sodomite. We told our pastor, and he declared the marriage null and void. We are going to present him the document and bring her back", replied Sean. "Good God. I wish you luck, gentlemen. If you must, contact the governor, Herr Gustaphus. And if possible, bring him to Turku. The authorities will punish him accordingly", said the king. "Thank you, your majesty", said Leif. "I will give you a document to present to Herr Gustaphus. I am very sorry for your sister, Herr Mackenzie", he murmured. |

It sounds like they are closer to finding Bridget and that is sooooo badass that they got to meet the king. I liked it that Gustav and Marja seem to have no idea that Dave and Lars are from modern America, and use words like "ass" It cracks me up everytime, but that is what's so great about this fiction: the balance between past and modern. It rocks!

Chapter 143 The morning of their departure dawned sunny and bright. The group was standing on the dock, waiting to board the ship. Around them sailors loaded cargo onto the ships, the cries of gulls overhead. The sun rose above the horizon, staining the sky and pink and orange. The ship bobbed up and down on the water, the tangy scent of the ocean hanging in the air. "From here we sail to Turku. They live near the village of Rantajarvi, about ten to fifteen miles inland. The house is called Mustasydan", said Sean. Tarja blanched at the mention of the name. "Mustasydan? That means Black Heart. I do not like the sound of that", she shuddered. "Wow. Yeah, that doesn't sound too good", said Lars. "Turku itself is not much of a town, but it is the capital of Finland. Turku is a city compared to the other towns in the province", chuckled Saul. "How many time you been to Finland?", asked Dave. "Many times. I have been as far as Viipuri, that is not much of a town either. Filand is quite backwards compared to Sweden or Denmark, no offense, Lady Tarja", he said. "No offense taken, Herra Rosenberg. Turku is quite small and dull, compared to Stockholm. I wonder if my family is still there", she mused aloud. "Time to board", a sailor told them. Sean nodded, as they led the horses below deck, then emerging onto the surface of the ship. Around them, they could see the city around them. The orange and yellow brick of Gamla Stan were bathed in the golden light, which reflected on the still waters of Lake Malaren. "Hopefully, Simon will relenquish my sister with no fuss. We will have to get in contact with Herr Gustaphus, and speak to the local reverand. We have the law and the church on our side", said Sean. "I know. Can he really go to jail for being gay? In American, nobody cares unless they molest kids or annoy someone", said Dave. "Yes, it is against the law. In America, they do nothing? That is disgusting", said Leif, making a face. The sailors finished loading the ship. It raised anchor, as it slowly sailed away from the dock. It leisurely made it's way past the city, out of the lake, until they reached the Baltic Sea. "We shall arrive in Turku by tomorrow morning. It is very scenic the journey, the Aland Islands are to the west. Lovely, but we do not have time to stop. Just enjoy the trip", said Saul. |

Like Tarja I don't like the sound of Black Heart. I hope that nothing terrible awaits them on their journey. I hope they find that Bridget is alive and well or else Dave will be so crushed. This is the place where they land: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turku Chapter 144 As Saul predicted, they arrived at Turku by the next morning. The scattered islands of the Turku archipelago were like emeralds dropped into a blue sea. The town became clearer as they approached. Saul and Tarja were right; it was nowhere as large as Copenhagen or Stockholm. The tallest buildings were the cathedral and a castle on the back of the river. Otherwise, the rest of the buildings consisted of small wooden houses, none taller than three stories. "You're right, this isn't much of a town", said Lars. "I know, but Turku is the capital of Finland. We must speak to Herr Gustaphus and then go to Rantajarvi", replied Saul. The ship docked, as they retrieved their horses. "Excuse me, where is the governer's house?", asked Sean. "It is the red house near the castle", replied a sailor. They followed his directions. Unlike Stockholm, Turku has the air of a provincial backwater, instead of a capital. The roads were muddy and unpaved, the houses small and clustered together. Most of the people wore simple plain clothes, many of them barefoot. "Man, if this is the capital, I don't wanna know what the rest of the country is like", muttered Dave. "I understand. Helsinki is not much either, nor is Viipuri. Finns are not exactly sophisticated", said Saul. They found the governer's house easily; it was painted red and three stories high. It was easily the largest house in the city. Sean got off his horse and knocked on the door. A middle aged woman in a black dress and apron answered it. "Good morning, madam. We need to speak to the governer. We have a document from the king", he said, as Tarja translated. "Mina pyystaa Herra Gustaphus", she said. The governer was in the back of the house, carefully trimming his hedges. He leaned over, examining them to see if they were even. "Herra Gustaphus, there is a group here to see you. Their leader claims he has a document from the king", said the maid. "Kiitos, Rouva Ylonen", he said, putting down the clippers. He entered the house, wiping his hands on a towel, before opening the front door. "Paivaa, lady and gentlemen. Please come inside", he said graciously. The group followed him into the parlor. "Where are you from?", he asked, as they sat down. Sean faced him, smiling politely. "I am Sean Mackenzie, and these are my companions Lars Ulrich, Leif Holmgren, Dave Mustaine, Tarja Vesala and Saul Rosenberg. I and Herr Holmgren are from Norway, Herr Ulrich and Herr Rosenberg are from Denmark, Herr Mustaine is from American, and Fru Vesala is from here in Finland", he replied. "Very glad to make your acquaintance, lady and gentlemen. What is your business here?", he asked, as Mrs. Ylonen set out a pot of tea and a tray of biscuits. Sean said nothing, but reached into his pocket and took out a sheet of parchment and handed it to him. The governer unfurled the parchement and read it. His eyes widened in surprise, noticing the king's seal at the bottom. "Gentlemen, this is serious business. Herra Bergstrom and his bodyguard must be arrested. And I pray for your sister, Herra Mackenzie", he murmured. "Yeah, if he's hurt her, I will kick his ass", growled Dave. "A bit crude, but I understand the sentiment. Were you two lovers?", he asked. "Yeah", he said simply. "I understand. Well, tomorrow I will send a constable with you to Rantajarvi. You will stay here tonight, the inns here are dirty. You will also have to speak to the village reverand to decide what is to be done with him", he said. |
