Folks never call when you want them to, and always call when you don't. Just the way of the world, and I'm glad he didn't magically call. More chapters i'm such a happy girl. :nanner:

Love the flashback with Pep, it was hilarious.

I hope Jamie and Charlie get to have some goodtimes together soon. This story rocks!

Hehe, I've always found Pep's shopping spree quite hilarious. :D

I'm glad that everything okay (more or less at least) with Charlie. For a moment I thought that she might have seen someone unpleasant somewhere.

I wish James was feeling better already and he'd be back. :(

Update soon again.

Let's see whether James will call or Charlie will do earlier.

I tried James the next morning and his phone went straight to voicemail. I left a brief message, telling him about the prior evening's events and trying to convey that I was over my freakout but I'd still like to talk to him when he was free.

Kirk was flipping pancakes when I wandered into the house at nine, and he greeted me with a hug, pointing me in the direction of the coffee. "Matt and Maggie are still sleeping," he informed me. "As is Lani. I'm making hangover cures. Want one?"

I glanced at the blender where a pale green concoction whirred around, and tilted my head, my curiousity piqued. "What's it taste like?"

He smirked a little. "It tastes...healthy." Pressing the stop button, he poured the thick mixture into a small glass and set it in front of me. "Try it."

Scrunching up my nose, I took a sip, shuddered, and swallowed. "Tastes like grass," I put the glass down, licking my lips. "Not entirely unpleasant, though. Is there honey in it? And protein? And maybe a little carrot juice?"

He nodded, and I kept listing ingredients, trying to guess what else he'd thrown in. Lani walked into the kitchen, bleary eyed and bedheaded, to find me rattling off various items, trying to figure out what was giving the shake its kick.

Laughing, he kept shaking his head and kissed Lani, handing her a flat spatula. I giggled when she took it from him, eyeing his butt like she might swat him.

Matt joined us a few minutes later, rubbing sleep from his eyes. "Morning, guys. Sorry to sleep so late. Maggie's trying to track down her shirt and then we'll be outta your hair."

Kirk shook his head. "No need. Pancakes are all ready. Grab a plate." He poured a glass of the green shake for Matt, who looked mildly grossed out for a minute and then downed it in one gulp.

"Interesting."

"Isn't it? What do you think is in it?" I leaned over the counter, trying to get him in on the game.

"Um...I don't know what's making it green - nor do I want to know," he assured Kirk. "Carrots, maybe some OJ, a little ginger-"

"Ginger!" I threw up my hands. "Thank you, that was driving me crazy."

We took the food outside, and ended up staying out there for most of the morning, only going inside to retrieve more coffee. Matt and Maggie took off just before lunch, and Kirk went for a swim while Lani and I lounged by the pool a little longer.

I took a nap after lunch, after my already lazy day, and Kirk woke me at 2, rousing me from my slumber on the couch. He looked concerned.

"Everything okay?" I sat up, tucking my feet under me.

"Yeah, no, everything's cool. I just, um, I talked to Lars." He took a breath, smiled, and continued. "We're gonna release the album in two weeks."

"Oh my God. Kirk, that's wonderful!" I was so excited for the album to drop, I couldn't wait for everyone to hear it.

"Yeah, it is. We figure James should be back by then, and we can start doing more promo stuff." He sat beside me on the couch, dropping an arm over my shoulders. "It's not the way we normally do it - we're leaking a track tomorrow - but it's pretty exciting."

I started to let what he was saying actually sink in, and my head started spinning. "So, with the album release, assuming James is back, and once you go back to the city..."

"We'll start touring soon," he finished for me, squeezing my arm gently.

I didn't know what to say. I knew they'd held off releasing the album so long because of me, and while I was thrilled that it would finally be out, I was anxious about James taking off on tour so soon. We hadn't really had a chance to discuss anything, and he'd be fresh out of rehab when the tour started, which hardly seemed ideal, and then there was the matter of Caitlin's funeral. "Wow," I exhaled slowly. "Has Lars talked to James?"

Kirk nodded. "He's all for it. Clearly, we wouldn't go on tour if he wasn't. Kinda need him for the singing part and all that rhythm guitar stuff," he grinned. "And Lars mentioned something about coming here. Like, in the next few days."

I raised an eyebrow. Lars? In Hawaii? "Great. The more the merrier, right?"

I followed him into the main house for tea, and we wound up having a matinee of Dracula movies. Lani and I cowered under blankets on either side of Kirk, who wrapped an arm around both of us, sighing heavily every time we shrieked.

The rest of the week went by in a bit of a blur. Each morning found me either at yoga or surfing with Kirk, followed by breakfast with either Matt or Maggie or both of them, meeting up with Lani and Kirk at lunch to plan out the afternoon's adventures. Occasionally that meant a movie in the air conditioned living room, or a road trip somewhere on the island to explore a new surf spot or hiking trail.

I spoke to James infrequently, and never for very long, just enough time to exchange tales about our respective days. I noticed that we both avoided the subject of touring. I was in no hurry to bring it up, and James seemed content to ignore it for now as well.

Trish called late Saturday afternoon. I was stretched out in the window seat in the kitchen, keeping an eye on a batch of madeleines, and Kirk was playing guitar in courtyard, Lani sunbathing beside him, her big straw hat covering her whole face.

"I feel like we haven't talked in years," I told her as I took the cookies out of the oven. "How's everything?"

She was silent for a moment. "Perfect, actually. Work's going really well. I'm getting some cool assignments. Pep's been working like a madman on the house, and it looks amazing. I can't wait for you to see the colour we picked for the bedroom." She burst out laughing. "I have no idea when I got all Martha Stewart, but I'm totally excited about this stuff."

I smiled, flopping back down on the window seat. "I can't wait to see it!"

"I had a house guest last night," she told me. "Miss Cali, the one and only. Man, that kid is fun. She really misses you, p.s.," she added. "She called a few days ago to ask if we could go by the house to pick up some stuff she'd left there. Pep suggested she might wanna hang out after, so she came back here for a movie and pizza and fell asleep on Pep's lap. Fran was cool about it when I called though, so we just put her in one of the guest rooms."

"Awww, I can't believe she fell asleep on his lap. That's adorable," I sighed. "Don't tell her I said that."

She laughed. "I won't. It was just about the cutest thing I've ever seen, though. I think Keenan was pretty pleased, too. He carried her upstairs and tucked her in and then kept going back up to check on her."

"He's great with kids. You should have a few, keep him busy."

"Someday," she chuckled. "Right now it's just fun to borrow other people's kids and then give 'em back. I dropped her off a couple hours ago and had to promise that Cella and Cas could come over another time. I'm extremely popular," she informed me, and then cracked up.

We talked for a while longer, and when the conversation seemed like it was veering towards the subject of the boys going on tour, I said I had to check on the cookies.

"Mmhmm. Not ready to talk about that?" she chided gently.

"Not yet."

Hanging up after we'd said goodbye, I took the last batch of cookies out of the oven and transferred them to a rack to cool. I called a hello over my shoulder when I heard the door open, and when there was no response, I turned around.

James stood in the doorway.

Whoohoo! The return of the man!

I hear drama about to hit the fan, I hope he asks Charlie to go with them for at least a couple cities. And I hope their strong enough to keep their relationship together.

Love it, thanks for not letting this fic slip by the wayside.

Ah, I'm so glad that James came...

But. I'm sensing a... well, a but (or an and...). Like "James stood in the doorway but he didn't look happy to see me" or "James stood in the doorway and he looked like hell"...

But I'm so glad James's there. He's supposed to be there with Charlie

James is there. That sounds good. And then again, it doesn't, as Minna pointed out so well.
I sense something and I don't like it.

More soon? *puppy eyes*
