Ryan continues: The party was dedicated to the 1980’s. I had always loved Guns N’ Roses, and of course that was something that I couldn't talk to my dad about. Ever since Dad got burned on stage in 1992, and Axl Rose refused to keep the show going after they left the stage, Dad held a grudge against Axl for that. I thought it was stupid. Couldn’t he let the past go? We had argued about it many a time, and to rebel, I had continued listening to Guns N’ Roses behind his back. But, as I learned at that party, there was a whole new world to be discovered in 80’s rock – and I loved it! I didn’t get to talk to the Kirk lookalike at all. I ended up drinking too much, and passed out. I woke up in my apartment and William was there. He immediately started reprimanding me about getting too influenced by – then he stopped. I could tell he was talking about the Kirk lookalike, but was not going to mention his name yet! Why? “Ryan, I think you ought to meet somebody important. Somebody from the Truyvex world, but, well, is still particular to your history.” What on earth was he talking about? I was lost. But he told me he wanted me to meet somebody, and called that person, and next thing I knew, I was being taken back to Longacres Way! The Kirk lookalike opened the door. “Man. You must be Ryan Hetfield,” he said. “I can’t believe this.” His voice was deeper and smoother than Kirk’s, but he looked so much like him! “Ryan, I’d like you to meet none other than Kirk Lee Hammett Jr.,” William declared. “WHAT?” I screamed. “Why don’t you come in?” Kirk Hammett Jr. asked me. “I’ll leave you two alone,” William said, and took off. I loved this house. It was a folly, which is a house with an abstract shape. This house looked kind of like a castle, with a flat roof, and people played live music up on that roof, as I’d learned at the party. I followed him in. There was a living room with leather couches and a kitchen next to it. The place was clean. “Take a seat,” Kirk Jr. motioned towards the couch. I sat down, and he asked whether I wanted anything to eat or drink. I said no. My stomach was in knots! The suspense was killing me. “Why on earth are you here?” I exclaimed. “Uncle Kirk would have been the coolest dad ever! Not like mine. Mine’s a domineering control freak.” There was sadness in Kirk’s dark brown eyes as he leaned across the kitchen countertop, drinking something that look like a chocolate milkshake. Finally, he answered, “That’s what everybody else thought, too. But really, he was never there.” “When were you born?” I asked. “November 20, 1986. Two days after his birthday. Dad says the way I came into the world was crazy. Basically, she didn’t even know she was pregnant. Had her periods and everything, I guess. So I was born out of nowhere – on an airplane – right in the middle of the Puppets tour.” “Wow! That is crazy. And Cliff never died, right?” “Nope. Bothers the hell out of me that he did in the other two worlds. Anyway, Dad got over my sudden crazy birth, I guess, but she didn’t. She took off when I was two. So I went on tour with Dad all the time and he taught me to play guitar when I was five. I was acting and modeling too. When I was seven, he bought the big house in Pacific Heights. By then I was already more famous than Dad was, basically.” “Man. I have a lot of homework to do,” I groaned. “Are you saying that if I’d known anything at all about the Truyvex world, I would have known about you right away?” “Oh yeah. Not trying to brag or anything, but I was a household name. I even had my picture on a billboard advertising Mountain Dew. It was a picture of me leaning against a Mountain Dew can and the slogan said ‘Kirk Hammett Jr.’s choice’. Dad didn’t like it too much that I was starting to let the fame get to my head. I had a huge ego back then. I had more money than Dad did, and I did whatever I wanted to. He was never there, you see. He never supervised me.” “I can’t believe that,” I cried. “I mean, he was always there for me and I wasn’t even his son!” For a moment, Kirk nearly looked jealous. But then he continued. “He was always drunk, or high, or messing around with the next girlfriend. But then the worst girlfriend came into his life. At first I didn’t take it seriously. I mean, he never got serious before. But he did with this one. She ruined my life, man. All she cared about was his money – our money, you know? And I knew that, even as a little kid. I could see through her and Dad couldn’t. Let’s see, Dad had $73 million? And over all the movies I’d starred in and albums I’d put out, I had about $100 million to my name? So, basically, I was standing in the way of her and $200 million. And she wanted me dead.” I was shocked. How could people in two different worlds be so different? I knew Kirk would never be that kind of dad in the Salinas world, surely? “She tried to kill me several times. Every time I tried to talk to Dad about her behavior, he wouldn’t listen. The worst came to worst on my tenth birthday, when he was talking about marrying her! So I knew I had to get out of there. We went off on tour in 1997, and that was when I split. I went to the Philippines first, then I came here.” “Who was this dreadful woman?” I cried. “I certainly hope she doesn’t exist in your world. Short bitch with a pointy chin and straight hair. Her name was Lani.” |

Kirk and I became best friends instantly. It was as though we'd known each other all our lives. I still couldn't believe that Lani, and his dad in many ways, had been so evil in his world. But we'd both had tough lives, and were here because we weren't going to put up with it anymore, and we bonded over that. It wasn't long before Kirk asked me to move into his house. He had bought it, of course, himself since he had so much money. It turned out that he could cook, and I mean really cook! He told me that at his father's house, he had had his own floor, and always ended up cooking for friends. His dad was a vegetarian - that was the same as in my world - and Kirk Jr. said that he could never be a vegetarian. So he cooked his own meals. His cooking was great! I'd always thought his dad was a good cook too, though. He became the big brother when I moved in, helping me with my homework, teaching me how to swim, and how to shoot! Yes, Kirk loved his guns, it turned out. We were both huge Guns N' Roses fans, and Kirk introduced me to a lot of 80's metal that we had been getting into. Would you believe that he was only THIRTEEN? He already had a motorcycle and new Ford Mustang! "The cops around here are crooked," he explained. "I know so much about them that I could tell on them, and they would have their license revoked. I could go to the California Department of Law Enforcement right now. So instead of that, I ask them to allow me to drive. It's an even deal." Geez! He looked older than thirteen, with his thick mustache, and sounded like a grown man. But he was short, only about 5'5. "I don't think I'm going to grow any taller," he said. "I got my growth spurt last year. But I don't care. I kind of like being short. Though I'm average height for a Filipino guy. My biological mother was full-blood Filipino, which means I'm more Filipino than Dad is." No wonder he looked more Asian, and was darker. Funny enough, Kirk ended up getting a job at the corrupt police department, as a dispatcher! I decided to concentrate on school, cos I was too young to really work anyway. I loved the times we spent cruising in his Mustang, listening to Winger or Dokken or Poison cranked up loud. We kept our eyes on Metallica in all three worlds. We were shocked to learn that, in 2001, Jason quit Metallica. Well, maybe not shocked. I suppose I kind of expected that. Then, in all three worlds, an interview came out. They interviewed with Playboy magazine, out of all mags, and confessed their craziest secrets! "This is ridiculous," Kirk said. "Why would they spill their deepest secrets and hurts to PLAYBOY magazine? Maybe Psychology Today or Counselor's Digest . . . but PLAYBOY? Come on." We were shocked to know that one of the secrets was that Kirk Sr. had been abused as a child. Kirk Jr. couldn't believe it. "Dear God. I mean, really. He did hit me a few times. He seemed screwed up about something . . . oh, man." And that was when I poured out my entire story to Kirk about Francesca and Dad abusing me . . . |

I wondered whether I ought to write to Uncle Kirk and Aunt Lani to tell them that I was doing great. Certainly I couldn’t tell them much else! Especially about Kirk Jr. We had so much fun at Gunshot. I learned that the residents of the Nations area and the residents of the Village area (where Kirk and I lived) often competed against each other during Recreation Days. Sometimes it was over creativity rather than sports. Kirk was athletic, but I wasn’t, so I never participated in the sports. But on one of the creative days, Kirk had an idea. “You know what? Since we live in the Village, how about a bunch of us dress up as the Village People?” I burst out laughing. The Village People! The songs “Macho Man” and “YMCA” came to mind, and all of its members dressed up in different roles, and I remembered a few of them. I said to Kirk, since he was a dispatcher at the Gunshot Police Department, “So let me guess – you’re going to play the cop?” “Nope!” he grinned. “I’m going to be the Indian chief!” This was great. Our friend Alex Warner across the road ended up being the cop, his brother Kenny the military man, our friend Josh ended up being the construction worker, and I ended up being the cowboy! Finally we had another friend of ours, Kyle, play the leather man. We won the competition, of course. What a riot! I did write a brief letter to Kirk and Lani, and told them about the competition. I imagined them laughing over the letter, and if they were brave enough, maybe showing it to Jason. I thought about Cali. What was she like now? Was she a brat, or was she okay? I did some more research and discovered that Dad and Francesca ended up having two more kids. Their names were Castor and Marcella. Poor Castor, I thought. I didn’t care for that name at all! Surely the kid would get called “Castor Oil” at school? But I pushed the thoughts of all the “new kids” to the back of my mind. I probably would never end up meeting them, and they weren’t my concern, were they? |

RYAN - TWO AND A HALF YEARS LATER: I smiled as I blew out all twelve candles on my birthday cake. Mom, Walter, and all my new friends clapped and cheered. Then Mom and Walter each gave me a hug. I’d spent two years living with Kirk Jr. at Gunshot. After a wild ruckus in which Lani – well, the Lani in the Truyvex world – tried to kill him for the last time, he survived that, and ended up reuniting with his father. I was really happy for them that they’d sorted out their differences. Now it was time to trace my biological mother, the one that my father had driven away. I found her residing in Queensland, Australia. She’d gotten married, but didn’t have any more kids. I loved my stepdad, Walter. He was a kind, supportive man – the kind of father I’d always wished to have. I felt like I could tell him anything. In that regard he was like Uncle Kirk, but he didn’t look like him of course. He was a white man with blue eyes and a deep tan. He was already going gray, but he’d had a hard few years fighting testicular cancer. Unable to have children, he’d married my mom and hoped one day they would have me back in their lives. Walter had fought the cancer successfully. Now he worked at the tax collector’s office in Cairns, Australia. I lived there with them just outside of Cairns, on the other side of the world from Dad and Francesca, and I loved it. I still kept in touch with Uncle Kirk, Aunt Lani, Kirk Jr., and his dad too. Kirk Jr. and his dad visited me on my twelfth birthday, and we all went surfing together after the party. I wished my aunt and uncle from the Salinas world could be here, but with Kirk Jr. and his dad here, that would have been impossible! Plus, of course, sneaking around to see me wasn’t worth my father finding out. Or should I say, my biological father? That’s right – Walter adopted me, and now I called him Dad. It wasn’t long before I formed a band. Since I was from California, it was suggested that we call the band Plate Tectonics. Cool! We acquired a fair amount of fame. Perhaps you could compare us to Silverchair, an Australian band from the original world? Uncle Kirk and Aunt Lani were proud of my success, they said through their emails. I really missed them. As I rolled into my thirteenth year of life, I realized that I was already six foot two. My voice was hitting the deck and it wouldn’t be long before Walter would be teaching me how to shave. I was glad that I was getting famous for one reason: They could keep track of what I looked like. Otherwise they wouldn’t even recognize me, I thought sadly. I hoped one day I could see them again, and thank them for keeping me sane during the most miserable part of my childhood. |

And here goes Ryan again: Our band made huge success around the world. I had become very self-aware since joining Gunshot, and maybe I over-analyzed everything. But I just didn’t like the way my bandmates were so loose with their morals. I didn’t like it how they just had sex with anybody, even though that was accepted in the rock n’ roll world. Kirk Jr. and I had discussed this in detail back at Gunshot. He’d hated the way his dad just went from one girl to another, and suspected that they hadn’t used protection. He couldn’t stand the thought that just maybe, he had random kids from random groupies all over the world. I could not stand that, either. Who could live such a way? I didn’t want kids all over the place, and neither did Kirk Jr. After the screwed up way we were raised, we both had decided that we wanted proper families with legitimate children. But my bandmates didn’t seem to care, and I hated that. So even though I was going into my teenage, yet looked like a grown man already, I managed to decline sex with girls. I kissed them, I’ll admit that, but when they wanted sex I said no. I just told them I wasn’t ready. People judged me by that, of course, but I didn’t care. I decided that after what happened with my dad, and Kirk’s dad, and all, that it was up to me to make things right! That was a vow that Kirk Jr. and I had made. Like I said, I was still staying in contact with Kirk Jr. And I met somebody who had been his best friend in childhood. Her name was Stephanie Justice, and I went crazy about her immediately. She was super tall like I was, and had long blond hair too. We confided over the fact that we’d both been called dumb blonds! She and Kirk Jr. were close, and she’d been the bass player in his band as a child. We fell in love quickly, and it wasn’t long before we were serious about each other. Mom and Walter were thrilled. I wrote a letter to Uncle Kirk and Aunt Lani about it, and they replied that they were thrilled too! We started going out when I was fifteen. A few years went by, and she became the bass tech for the bass player of my band. We continued touring all over the world together. It wasn’t long before one of my band’s tours ended up connecting with Metallica’s. At this point, I was twenty years old. I knew that my band, Plate Tectonics, would be one of the bands opening for Metallica, but I didn’t care. I didn’t have to talk to Dad, but I would be thrilled to finally talk to Uncle Kirk and Aunt Lani again, and I looked forward to it. Of course, I had no idea what crazy events were to come, and what responsibility would rest on my shoulders . . . |
