This is the museum where they go: Imperial War Museum

Chapter 35

"I've never been to this one before, but there's a first time for everything", said Catriona.

"I know. I've always been interested in this shit, my grandfathers fought in the Winter War", said Alexi.

"I just finished reading about that one. Very interesting, I was rooting for the Finns, of course, I hate Communists", said Dave.

Dave, Alexi, Catriona and Andrew were all at the Imperial War Museum. The others all went their separate ways, deciding to go sightseeing at other places.

"I would've loved to have Amy here, but she's not into this shit. I guess it's a chick thing. I love guns and crap, my grandfather used to take me bear hunting as a kid", said Alexi.

"My father too. His family is originally from Karelia, he has a dacha there. I've shot bears, I shot my first one when I was fifteen", chuckled Andrew.

"Damn. Do you need a license for that?", asked Catriona.

"Nyet. There are so many bears in Karelia, and they eat people. But we don't just kill them, bears were sacred to our ancestors. And so are wolves, I don't shoot wolves", he replied, an odd gleam in his eyes.

The group entered the museum. Outside were several tour groups and student groups, the kids chattering on their mobiles or listening to their I pods.

"Four adult tickets please", said Dave.

The man at the ticket booth handed them the tickets, as they all chipped in with a donation. "Cool, they got a World War II exhibit. I wonder if they have anything about the Winter War or the Eastern Front?", asked Andrew.

"I hope so. Me being a Finn, I'm more interested in the Eastern Front than in the Western Front. I've been listening to a lot of Impaled Nazarene lately, they do a lot of stuff about the Winter War", said Alexi.

"Why don't we split up and meet again later? Is there a food court here?", asked Catriona.

"Yeah, there's a cafeteria in the basement. I'm not into the Eastern Front like you guys, I'm more interested in the American sphere. I've just finished reading Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, I want to know more. That sound good, Miss Kitty?", asked Dave.

"Sure", she replied.

"We'll meet in three hours in the cafeteria. Have a good time", said Alexi, as they walked off.

Chapter 36

Dave waved goodbye to them, taking her hand. "This is one of my favorite museums in London. I first came here back in the 80's, I was too stoned to see it properly, but I do try to see it whenever I'm in London", he said, leading her into the main hall.

The central hall of the museum had an exhibit on the Western Front of WWI. There was a replica of a trench that would have been found on the French-German border. A ditch several feet deep was topped by barbed wire, a machine gun nest at the lips of the trench. Wax dummies of soldiers huddled on the ground of the trenches, their glassy eyes wide with horror.

"It must've sucked being down in the trenches like that. I would've gone batshit", said Dave.

"Me too. Then again, I wouldn't have been in there in the first place. This is just like the One video", she replied thoughtfully.

"I know. Don't tell your uncles, but I really liked that video when it came out. It scared the crap out of me and Junior, then again we watched while stoned. The dude with the box over his face was scary as fuck, I hope he got put out of his misery", he mused aloud.

The other exhibits ranged from Britain's colonial past, to the World Wars, to the Blitz. Catriona was fascinated, reading the cards and asking him questions.

Dave was delighted by her curiosity, answering her questions as best as he could. She is definetly a Burton, she's a damn genius. I never knew a girl who liked this stuff, he thought.

"So Germany and the Hapsburgs were allies?", she asked.

"Yeah, they lost in the end. It wasn't just German, though. It was also Hungarians, Czechs and Yugoslavia. It's a lot more complicated than what they teach in school", he joked.

"You got that right, history was so boring in high school", she giggled.

"I know, Miss Kitty. Isn't Nightwish from Karelia? That's where Andrew's family is from", he said.

"Yeah, but Finnish Karelia. Do you like them, Dave?", she asked.

"Some of it, I don't like the ballads, though. I do have to say, though, Ghost Love Score is brilliant. I love the orchestral arrangement, it sounds like an overture but with lyrics. Andrew turned me onto their music. Eh, I'm still a Maiden, Priest, Diamond Head fan. That'll never get old. You like that, Kitty?", he asked.

"Yeah, Mom's a huge Maiden fan, she took me to see them as a kid, but Bruce left by then. I gotta see them with Bruce", she sighed.

"Awesome. My favorites are Killers and Number of the Beast. What's yours?", he asked.

"I love Beast, but my favorite is Piece of Mind. I adore The Trooper, I got the shirt", she replied.

"The Trooper's my favorite too. It actually got me to read Tennyson. Who says metal makes you stupid?", he cracked, as they both laughed.

Chapter 37

"Remember, we got the interview with Metal Hammer", said Andrew.

"I know. Man, I'd never thought I'd be interviewed by them, I love that magazine", sighed Catriona.

"Yeah, and I read that old interview with Metallica, you were in it. Did you really wear an Anthrax t-shirt and throw the goat?", teased Dave.

Catriona blushed guiltily. "Yeah, I got pictures. The memories are a bit hazy, but I do remember Anthrax. Scott Ian and my uncles babysat me while Mom and Dad went out on a date. I do recall watching My Little Pony and then Nightmare on Elm Street, it was Uncle James' idea", she giggled.

"I understand. When my nieces and nephews were small, I had to watch crap like that. My kids used to watch the same shit", he said wistfully.

"C'mon, you guys. The dudes from Metal Hammer are in the conference room", said Alexi.

He raised an eyebrow when he saw them together. It struck him as odd that they were always together, going out to clubs and sightseeing all together, like a big family. I know Dave is Andrew's uncle, but him and Catriona are really close. I know she's not related to him, I hope Dave doesn't steal his girlfriend, he mused.

The reporter and photographers from Metal Hammer were waiting for them in the conference room. The writer was a young man dressed in baggy green camouflage pants and a Slayer t-shirt, brown hair falling past his shoulders. His goatee was neatly trimmed, intelligent gray eyes peeking out from behind his glasses.

He stood up when he saw them, shaking their hands. "Hello, I am John Reynolds. I am going to interview you for next month's Metal Hammer, you will be on the front cover. Any questions you don't want to be asked?", he asked.

"Nothing too personal. I don't want everyone in England to know about our sex lives. Other than that, fire away. Oh, and be polite to Kitty, this is her first British interview", said Dave.

"Miss Burton, I will try not to make you uncomfortable. We try not to embarrass our female interviewees", he said politely.

"Thank you, sir", she replied graciously.

The reporter on his tape recorder, as he began to speak...

Does Metal Hammer ever talk about sex lives? I never saw the magazine, so I don't know if it's common to talk about that or not in magazines that focus on metal. I know the trashy stuff like US focuses on sex!

Wow. That was a cool chapter.

Dudes waiting in the conference room- that's one official sounding interview.

I'm glad they try not to embarass any female interviewees. That is very very very considerate of them. :dance

This kicks ass!!!! :horns:

Chapter 38

The annual heavy metal festival, Gigantour, is playing tonight at Brixton Academy. The traveling festival, the brainchild of Dave Mustaine of Megadeth, has always showcased some of the most talented and innovative young bands today. This year's lineup is no different, showcasing Megadeth as the headliners, along with Finnish shredders Children of Bodom, American heavy metal stalwarts Lamb of God, and the symphonic metal act, Beren's Dream, fronted by Mustaine's nephew, Andrew Mikhailovich.

Metal Hammer sat down with Dave Mustaine, Randy Blythe of Lamb of God, Alexi Laiho of Children of Bodom, and Andrew and Catriona Burton of Berens' Dream in the conference room of the London Hyatt at Notting Hill. We discussed touring, music, and why the Silmarillion is better than Lord of the Rings

Metal Hammer- I know this is a cliche' question, but how do you feel about playing London?

Dave- I've played London so many times, I lost count. I don't remember much about the first time we played here, I do know that we played some shitty club in Camden Town, me and Junior got really wasted after that.

Alexi- I love playing London, you English are crazy for metal, and Strongbow rules.

Randy- I agree with Wildchild. That Strongbow is strong as fuck, too bad you can't buy that in the States.

Andrew- I've been to London on holiday, I saw Nightwish here on the Wishmaster tour. My favorite sights are the Imperial War Museum and the British Museum. In fact, we went there yesterday.

Catriona- Yeah, me Dave, Alexi and Andrew all went. I have to say it was quite interesting, but my brother would have liked it better.

MH- Good to see that. So are you listening to anything new, any good young bands?

Dave- Most new music sucks now, it's mostly this emo shit where some dude in more eyeliner than Poison is whining about his girlfriend and how his uncle sodomized him when he was twelve. Just do us a favor and die already, you piece of shit. I do have to say, though, the new Dragonforce rules. Their guitarist may play faster than me, and that's saying something.

Alexi- I just bought Far Beyond Driven by Pantera again, I keep losing my copy. I'm a motherfucking huge Pantera fan, it's great music to get fucked up to. Dimebag, rest in peace, dude.

Randy- Ditto, Dimebag was the man.

Andrew- I love the new Nightwish, Dark Passion Play. I didn't know if they could replace Tarja, but Annette is a great singer. And Tuomas has written some great songs, they have not slowed down one bit.

Catriona- Me too. I'm a huge Nightwish fan, my favorites are Century Child and Angels Fall First. And I love the new HIM, Venus Doom. I thought Dark Light was too slick, but this was more raw, more heavy.

MH- Interesting, Miss Burton. What is it like being on tour with a group of men, being the only woman?

Catriona (laughs)- Oh, it's nothing. I have quite a few uncles, so being around guys is nothing. And I got Andrew here, if anyone tries anything, they'll have to answer to him.

Andrew- of course, kiska.

MH- Very interesting. What do you look forward to in Britain?

Dave- Seeing some museums, when I toured back in the eightees, I was too drunk or stoned to see anything. If I had my kids here, I'd take them to Alton Towers, they love that stuff.

Alexi and Randy- Get fucked up.

Andrew- I cannot wait to see Tolkein's grave at Oxford. I'm a huge Tolken fan, whenever I was in England, I never got a chance to see his grave.

Catriona- Ditto, me and Andrew are Tolkein freaks, in fact, that's why we hooked up in the first place.

Andrew- Yes, and she has read the Silmarillion. That is better than Lord of the Rings because it explains how Middle Earth came to be. And it separates the real fans from the poseurs.

Catriona- Yeah, before the movies came out, it wasn't cool it admit you read the books. My Mom's a big fan, that's why my middle name is Galadriel.

MH- Very good. Thank you all for agreeing to be interviewed. And I do hope that Gigantour is a success.

Dave- Thanks, dude. To all my droogies and she-wolves, see you at the show.
