Aww, thanks girls Ashley, Davetriona, I like it In this chapter, this is an article by Kerrang and an interviewChapter 43 Catriona walked offstage when the song was over. She tried to keep the grin from spreading on her face, but a tiny giggle escaped her mouth. "You look particularly happy, nyet? We have an interview with Kerrang", said Andrew. "Who else is coming?", she asked, as he led her towards the greenroom. "It is just you and me, kiska. My uncle says he will meet us back at the hotel", he replied, opening the door and leading her inside. A young man in tracksuit bottoms and a Korn t-shirt sat on the couch. He rose to greet them, extending his hand. "Hello, I am Simon Robinson and I will be interviewing you, Mr. Mikhailovich and Miss Burton. Before we start, are there any questions you don't want us to ask?", he inquired. "Nyet, but do not ask us about our sex lives. That is no one else's business", joked Andrew. "I see", he replied, taking out the tape recorder: The Saga of Beren's Dream Beren's Dream is one of the rising stars of the American metal scene. Fronted by the lovely and talented Catriona Burton and guitarist/singer/songwriter Andrew Mikhailovich, the quintet was formed in 2002 in San Francisco. Andrew met bassist Robin Gregory, drummer Jake Piedmont and keyboardist Kurt Cockburn through an ad in the local newspaper. Inspired by Tolkien, mythology and the symphonic sounds of Nightwish and Within Temptation, the group added singer Tanya Roberts. They developed a cult following in the Bay Area, playing gigs all along the coast of California. However, just as they were planning to sign a deal with local indie Narcissus Records, Tanya quit the band. Her husband, a middle-aged producer based in Los Angeles, had her quit the band and is grooming her to be the next pop sensation. Undaunted, the group soldiered on, looking for a new lead singer. They found her in the person of Catriona Burton. Miss Burton already has a touch of the rock star in her, which comes from her family. Her father was the late great Cliff Burton of Metallica, the bass virtuoso whose tragic death in a bus crash in Sweden shocked the metal world. Andrew is no slouch either in the metal family sweepstakes. His uncle is the legendary, volatile frontman of Megadeth, Dave Mustaine. Certainly, Andrew has been compared to his illustrious uncle in terms of guitar playing; when his fingers fly over the strings and his black hair surrounds his face, he resembles a younger, brunette version of Mr. Mustaine. We are here in the greenroom at the Brixton Academy at Gigantour, where Beren's Dream are one of the acts on the bill. Kerrang talked to Andrew and Catriona about touring, Tolkien, and having famous relatives. Kerrang- I know this is the cliche' question, but how is the tour so far? Andrew-I know, Metal Hammer asked us the same question. We can't say much because this is only the first date, but so far, so good. The crowd tonight was great, very enthusiastic. Catriona- I agree with Andrew, we got to see the Imperial War Museum with Dave and Alexi. I have to say it was quite interesting, but my brother would have liked it better. Kerrang- Andrew, you do come from an unusual background. Tell us more about it. Andrew- My mother is Dave Mustaine's sister and my father is a Russian diplomat based in St. Petersburg. I was born there and lived there until I was eighteen. Heavy metal is enormously popular in Russia, and Eastern Europe in general. Catriona- Very true. My mother's family is Polish and Scottish, Polish people can be real metal heads as well. Kerrang- What sort of music inspired you? Andrew- Megadeth, of course, my mother has all her brother's albums. (laughs). I love metal generally, but I didn't like that nu metal garbage. It is a bunch of noise with some dude growling over it. It is rubbish. But I do love Nightwish, their music is so beautiful. And they are from Karelia, my family is originally from there. Catriona- Of course I listen to Metallica, I do remember Mom and I going on the Ozzy tour and I kept asking Dad to play Seek and Destroy. And I'm a huge Nightwish fan too. My favorite album of theirs are Century Child and my favorite song is Ghost Love Score. Kerrang- Excellent taste, Miss Burton. Did having famous relatives affect you in any way? Andrew- Not really. Most of my friends knew who my uncle was, but they were more impressed that my father was a diplomat. In the states, I don't like to trumpet it, it is in bad taste. My uncle deserves his privacy. Catriona- A lot of people are unaware that my dad was married and had kids. They think of him as that crazy dude from Cliff 'Em All, smoking pot and drinking. Which is cool, I remember my dad smoking funny cigarettes. (laughs). But I don't like to brag that the guys in Metallica are my uncles, like Andrew said, it's in bad taste. Kerrang- Miss Burton, how does your family feel about you being in a band with a Mustaine? Catriona- First of all, Andrew is only half Mustaine. (everyone laughs). And two, I'm a grownup. Andrew's a great guy and the band is great. They were upset that Mom didn't tell them, but they've gotten over it. Kerrang- Good to know, Miss Burton. Any final words? Andrew- I hope you British fans will come on down to Gigantour. The bands are awesome this year, and we look forward to seeing you. |

Tomorrow, we're going down the shore to visit my cousins, so I may not be able to update Here's some chapters for tonight And this is Tolkien's grave: Tolkien's GraveChapter 44 "All right everyone, let's roll", announced Dave. "I know, uncle. We have the show in Birmingham tomorrow night. And you did promise us we were going to see Tolkien's grave", said Andrew. "You keep on reminding me, kid. Okay, but don't be too long. I want to get to Birmingham before dark", he warned. "Here goes Andrew with his Lord of the Rings fetish. I'm surprised you haven't hooked up with Liv Tyler yet", teased Robin. "Da, I prefer redheads over brunettes. Opposites attract", he joked. "When the tour is over, we're going to Helsinki with Children of Bodom, and then I want to go to St. Petersburg to visit my family", said Andrew. "Awesome, Helsinki's a great city, it's gorgeous. I've never been to St. Petersburg before, is it safe?", asked Catriona. Andrew pretended to glare. "You have insulted my country, kiska. Just kidding. No, it is very safe, I will show you everything. And you will meet my parents and my sisters, Tamara and Maria", he replied. "Yeah, I can't wait to see Michelle and Dmitri again. Just stick with us kid, you're gonna have a great time", joked Dave, as the bus took off. An hour later, the bus approached the outside of Oxford. The outer suburbs were a bland mix of modern concrete and glass buildings, a contrast to the medieval college town. "I know, many English cities look like crap. Birmingham is ugly, and Glasgow is even uglier. No offense to the British, but their design sense sucks", said Dave. "All right, hurry up", grumbled the driver, as parked outside the cemetery. Andrew and Catriona quickly got off the bus. It was a pleasant spring day, but the blue sky was partially obscured by clouds, the blue peeking out from behind the gray. They found his grave easily enough, it had a bouquet of white lillies on top of the gray marble. Tolkien and his wife's graves lay side by side, inseparable even in death. "It is beautiful", she murmured. "Da, I know. Beren is with his Luthien", he whispered. Andrew reached into his pocket and took out a piece of paper. He unfurled it to reveal a picture of Minas Tirith, the gleaming white towers shining under the hot sun of Gondor. "My sister Maria drew it, she told me to place it on his grave. Let us go back to the bus, kiska", he said, leading her back towards the bus. |

I have some time, so here's an update Chapter 45 The bus arrived in Birmingham several hours later. The suburbs of the city were uninspiring, to say the least. Massive gray concrete and glass monoliths stood to the side of the road, the ugly buildings reaching to the sky. Garbage was visible through the overgrown grass, the loud thump of rap music penetrating the bus. "What the hell is this?", asked Catriona, making a face. "Those are tower blocks, housing projects. I remember when we toured back in the eighties, Junior and I tried to buy some drugs in one of those. Some skinheads saw us and tried to beat us up, luckily we got the hell out of that place. Just be careful, some skinheads and chavs are violent as hell", warned Dave. The city itself wasn't much better than the ugly suburbs. It was all glass and concrete, the road bumpy under the wheels of the bus. "I know, Birmingham is ugly as hell. And the place were Ozzy was born, forget it. That place still looks like it went through the Blitz", said Dave. The bus parked outside of a glass and concrete hotel in the city center. "Tomorrow, we check out the venue. It's ugly, but the British have the worst sense of design", said Dave. Everyone got off the bus and quickly checked into the hotel. "Don't tell me you are tired, kiska", teased Andrew. "Of course not. But I do want to go out later. You know any good clubs?", she asked. "Da, there's a good goth club I know, the owner is a Russian guy who went to school with me. It is called Amaranths in Bloom, you want to go?", he asked. "Sounds good. But first, it's been since I had pirogies. Do you think there's a good Polish restaurant here?", she asked. "I'll ask the concierge and I will ask my uncle if he wants to come along", he said, picking up his mobile and dialing his number. "No, he wants to stay here tonight, but he said not to come in too late", said Andrew, turning off the phone. They both went downstairs to the lobby. It was done in a minimalist design, all beige walls and rugs, stainless steel and glass furniture, abstract art on the walls. The clerk behind the desk smiled at them. He was a young man in a white buttoned down shirt and khakis, his brown hair cut short. "How may I help you?", he asked, speaking with a neutral British accent. "Yes, we would like to know of any good Polish restaurants?", she asked. The clerk's smile faltered for a bit, but then resumed. "Oh yes. Let me take a look", he said, typing something into the computer. He handed them a printout, smiling at them. "Here you go, and may I call a taxi for you", he asked in a sweet voice. "Sure dude", she replied dubiously. What's his problem?, she wondered. "The taxi will be here shortly. And why do you want to go to a Polish restaurant? Their food is fattening, are you Polish?", he asked, a hint of scorn in his voice. "Listen asshole, my mother is Polish and it's not like British food is any better", she snarled. Andrew led her outside to the front of the hotel. "I understand, kiska. That clerk was being an idiot. I will tell my uncle not to stay here anymore", he said. Just then, the taxi arrived. "Kiska, your chariot awaits", he said gallantly, leading her inside the taxi. |

Chapter 46 After dinner, they arrived at the club, Amaranths in Bloom. The club was located in a nondescript brick building. A small line formed on the sidewalk outside, a burly doorman guarding the entrance. The doorman looked up, smiling when he saw Andrew. "Oi, you can come right in. Sergei is expecting you", he said. Andrew smiled, tipping him a fiver as they entered the club. Inside, it was almost totally dark with a few tiny lights. The walls were black, painted with the shadow of trees in purple. Above the trees, the sky was painted with shades of blue ranging from the darkest midnight blue at the top of the a paler bluish-lavender at the bottom. Tiny stars twinkled on the ceiling, illuminating the scene below. On the dance floor, the patrons grooved to loud, throbbing techno music, heavy on the bass. Most of the people were goths, with a few punks thrown in. They were all clad in black and other dark colors, their pale skin providing a contrast. Catriona looked around curiously. She was glad that Andrew insisted on the leather miniskirt and corset top. Her auburn hair hung loose, her red lips and dark eyeliner accentuating the planes of her face. Andrew put an arm around her waist, leading her over to a table. He wore pressed black slacks and a blood-red silk shirt, his black hair reaching past his collar and his green eyes rimmed with eyeliner. A waitress in a French maid's outfit came over to their table. The outfit was made of black vinyl and the top exposed her large, very white breasts, her dark hair hidden under a lace cap. She smiled at them, revealing a set of fangs. "How can I help you?", she asked, speaking with a Russian accent. "One bottle of hunter's vodka. And may I please talk to Sergei?", he asked. "Da, I will see", she said. "Damn, this like something out an Anne Rice novel", said Catriona. "I know. I'd knew you'd like it. Sergei and I went to the same school together, his father is also a diplomat. He is not Mafia, you have nothing to fear, kiska", he murmured. The girl appeared several minutes later, along with another man. He was tall and muscular, dressed in black leather pants and a black silk shirt. His hair was cropped short, his brown eyes looking out of a strong face. "Zdravtvuyte, Andrew. Kak dela?", he asked. "Khoroso, spasibo. Sergei, this is my girlfriend, Catriona Burton. Catriona, this is my friend Sergei Lemnolov", he said. Sergei took a seat and shook her hand. "Ochen priyatna, Miss Burton. Andrew, she is a beauty. And I've heard your album, it is wonderful. Natasha, my girlfriend, is particularly fond of your music", he said, speaking with a heavy Russian accent. The girl poured them each a shot of vodka and left discreetly. "So you are on tour in the UK?", asked Sergei, taking a sip of his vodka. "Da, we played a show in London yesterday and we were even interviewed by Metal Hammer and Kerrang", said Andrew, a hint of pride in his voice. "I do hope you enjoy your stay, if you want anything, just ask", said Sergei. He finished his vodka and got up from his chair, clapping him on the back, shaking their hands and walking back to his office. |
