Ugh- I can't imagine a 16 hours flight. That's the thing that's a dealbreaker for me as far as travel- the actual GETTING there.

LOVED this chapter so much- the descriptions were amazing. Perfect writing!

I wonder if Shane is going to visit Nat in her room? :wink

Chapter 90

After dinner, Torben took them on a tour of the mansion. "Over here is the portrait room, here we have portraits of our ancestors", he said.

The portrait room was a small room with a pale gray carpet. On the walls were paintings of Ulrich ancestors and their spouses, all of them looking quite stern and forbidding.

"These portraits date back to the 17th century, that's when the manor was built", said Lars.

Shane and Natalya looked at the portraits, marveling at how many there were. It seemed as though every generation of Ulrichs had a portrait.

"Who is this?", she asked, pointing to a portrait. It showed a beautiful, elegant blond woman in a rich, dark green velvet gown, her dress trimmed with ermine. A necklace of diamonds glittered around her slender neck, her eyes as green as her gown.

"That is Anastasia Ulrich, the wife of Hans Ulrich, he lived back in the 18th century. She was the daughter of a wealthy Russian merchant in Estonia, we had a trading house there. With their marriage, they were able to combine their businesses into one larger one", said Torben.

He continued to show them the portraits, talking at length about each ancestor. At the very end of the hall were two portraits of Torben, one with Ulrika, Lars' mother and one with Mariska. In both, he wore an elegant black tuxedo, a calm expression on his face. Mariska wore a deep blue velvet gown, her dark hair in a bun at the back of her head, encased in a jeweled net.

"Lars, when you inherit the manor, you will get your portrait painted here. And when are you getting married?", he chided.

Lars blushed guiltily. "I'm in between girlfriends, Dad", he mumbled.

"I would like to be a grandfather sometime this century. And you need an heir for the title, or else the title and the manor revert back to the country of Denmark", he admonished.

"How did you get the manor in the first place?", asked Shane.

"Our ancestor Leif Ulrich was a soldier during the Great Northern War with Sweden. He saved the king, Frederik IV, from attack, shielding the king with his body to protect him from an enemy blow. In gratitude, the king gave him this land and our title. I am the Baron of of Rungsted, and this is the Barony of Rungsted. I am the current baron, and when I die, Lars becomes the baron. The title will revert back to the government if there are no heirs", said Torben, giving his son a look.

Shane felt some sympathy for Lars. He's an adult, and his old man wants him to have an heir. Bummer, he thought.

Avery had told him that back in the eighties, Lars was deeply in love with her friend Elinor Lindstrom. During the recording of the Black Album, Elinor had dumped him after she'd caught him with several groupies and doing cocaine.

No one had been able to find her, not in Uppsala or with her mother's family in Gothenburg. Uncle Lars fucked up big time, but I do hope he can find Elinor again, he's too old to be fucking around with groupies, he mused.

I wondered what had happened to Elinor too. I can't blame her for dumping him though. Doing cocaine and shit is not cool.
I always thought that maybe Avery and Lars would hook up. :) Then Kitty could rule the empire.

This story rocks! Can't wait for more. :horns2

This is the part of Copenhagen they're in: Indre By

Chapter 91

"You kids, I am going to s how you around, get your cameras out", said Lars.

They were gathered at Indre By in Copenhagen near the palaces and administrative buildings of the Danish government. It was a pleasant, old-fashioned part of the city, all cobblestone streets and medieval brick buildings. Camera-toting tourists snapped pictures of the buildings, seagulls scooping up crumbs from the streets. The briny scent of the harbor hung over them, as boats bobbed up and down on the water.

Shane and Natalya had decided to tour the city, and Lars volunteered to be their guide. Torben and Mariska were still asleep when they left, leaving them to explore the city.

Lars was in his element, as they walked around Indre By and the harbor, pointing out the landmarks. It was obvious he loved his city, the pride coming through in his voice.

No one paid much attention to them, as they didn't look too different from the native Danes. Shane wore jeans and a Motorhead shirt, his auburn hair loose past his shoulders. Natalya wore a pink blouse and a denim skirt with sandals, while Lars wore a vintage Diamond Head shirt and jeans.

"Denmark has a queen, right?", she asked.

"Yeah, Queen Margarethe. She's not here in Copenhagen, thought, the royal family is at their summer home in Jutland. If she was here, I'd take you to see the changing of the guards, they have one here just like in London, but there aren't as many tourists", said Lars.

They spent the morning along the harbor, the sea breeze providing a pleasant coolness on the warm summer's day. Natalya posed next to the Little Mermaid statue, as Shane took a picture.

"The movie sucked, but I gotta admit, you're hotter than Ariel", joked Shane.

"Very funny. Besides, they did not do the movie right, the Little Mermaid is not supposed to have happy ending", she said.

"Yeah, I know. They fucked up Hans Christian Andersen, as a Dane, I take it personally. Then again, they don't do crap right at Disney", said Lars, rolling his eyes.

"Hey Uncle Lars, I wanna see the Carlsberg brewery", said Shane eagerly.

"Of course, my boy. What do you say, Natalya?", he asked.

"That sounds good, Mr. Ulrich. Do they have free beer?", she asked slyly.

"Shane, keep this girl. Of course, the first one is free, but you have to pay for the others", said Lars.

They took a bus to the Carlsberg Brewery and waited outside. The massive gates were adorned with four elephants, two on each side. There was a crowd forming outside, mostly camera-toting tourists and regular Danish people from the suburbs.

The gates opened and Lars led them inside the visitor's center. He led them around as the displays were in Danish, he translated them. It was surprisingly interesting and they hung on every word, fascinated.

"Now let's get our free beer", said Lars. They were ushered into the cavernous beer hall in the basement of the visitor's center. There was an enormous wooden cask with a tap and trays of mugs and a table spread with food: open-faced sandwiches, pickles, cheeses, and numerous seafood dishes.

"The first beer is free, but you have to pay for the other ones. And the food is free, all you can eat", he chuckled.

The three of them piled up their plates with food and got their beer. Shane took a sip of his, savoring the rich taste of the beer. Man, there's nothing like beer fresh from the brewery,he thought, as they began to eat.

They continued eating as the pretty blond waitress refilled their mugs. "Carlsberg tastes better from the brewery, eh?", chuckled Shane, taking a bite of his herring.

"Tak, I think Papa will like this a lot", giggled Natalya, starting on her third mug of beer.

"Shane, you got yourself some woman there", joked Lars.

"Keep your hands off her, Uncle Lars", he admonished, drinking his fourth mug of beer.

Loved that chapter!!!! :horns:  It rocked pretty damn hard. Lars's comment about Disney was funny. I like Disney though, old school Disney, before they started making those creeping looking computer generated pixar films. I saw Toy Story and was like "this sucks." I liked The Little Mermaid  even if Disney changed the ending. Some of the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales were a bit morose for little kids. I read this one once about this old, corpulent, king dude who marries his daughter. Disgusting.

Anywho, I liked that chapter. Lars is a hoot. I want to see the Carlsburg brewery.

rock on!!! :horns:

Since my stepfather took my brother to the movies, I got the computer to myself :nanner: I know, Ashley, some of Andersen's stories are pretty dark, but so is Grimm's Fairytales, I have an edition with the original stories, there's Cinderella and Snow White, stuff like that, but they are much more gruesome than the ones we're used to :o I'm surprised they're considered kids stories

The brewery part was inspired by something my brother told me. If you didn't know, my brother Erik is in the Navy, stationed in Yokosuka. He's a big drinker of Sapporo beer and he likes to go to their brewery in the city of Sapporo in Hokkaido. He said the brewery tour is cool, but then there's a facility like a beer garden, you pay for the beer but the food is all you can eat Japanese and Korean food :drool And the beer has just been brewed. Hmm, that makes me hungry :drool

Chapter 92

"Wow, we had fun, lalka", sighed Shane, flopping down on the bed.

Natalya giggled, sitting down next to him. "Tak, we saw a lot today. Shane, I am not a peasant, but Copenhagen is so big. San Francisco is so big, but I like Copenhagen better, the people are more friendly and it is not so dirty", she said.

"Yeah, I can imagine San Francisco can freak you out. It wasn't such a good idea to take you to the Castro, I didn't know all the gays would freak you out. The Haight's cool, though, but I'm guessing they don't have many hippies in Poland", he replied.

"Nie, Shane. But Copenhagen is lovely. Are the other cities here like that?", she asked.

"Yeah, Oslo and Stockholm rule. I've been there with Metallica, the nightlife is awesome, but the scenery is Norway is fantastic. You gotta see the fjords and the north. The fjords are better than what you see in photos, the water is so blue and the mountains so green. The north is like the moon, all tundra and rocks, and the sun doesn't go down for 24 hours", he said.

Her eyes widened in delight. "Shane, that sounds wonderful. Can we see the Midnight Sun?", she asked.

"Anything you want, lalka. And I don't wanna see my grandpa anytime soon, Mom and Uncle Lars say we have as much time as possible. I wanna take you to northern Norway to see the Midnight Sun, and to Stockholm. That is one gorgeous city, it's like Venice", he said dreamily.

Shane got up from the bed and took a bag out of his pocket. Inside was some weed they had purchased in a coffee shop in Christiania and rolling papers.

"Uncle Lars says Danish weed is really good. The Danish government doesn't give a shit as long as you don't smoke in public, but they're more strict in Norway and Sweden", he said, rolling a joint.

Shane finished and put it to his lips, lighting the tip. He inhaled the pungent smoke and handed her the joint.

Natalya put the joint to her lips and inhaled, feeling the smoke enter her system. She exhaled a cloud of smoke and passed him the joint.

They continued smoking the joint, feeling the warmth and relaxation course through them. Natalya looked at the drapes of the room, imagining them to be dragons in her state. She began to giggle, the laughter becoming louder and more uncontrollable.

Shane joined in her laughter, their giggled probably audible to everyone in the house. "Man, what was so funny?", he laughed.

"I forgot, nie wein", she giggled.

"Yeah, I don't know either. One of these days, Natalya, I am going to have my way with you. But the chase is better than the catch", he giggled, rolling another joint.

I like how Shane has his supply of weed with him. That's cool that he Danish government doesn't give a shit.
I don't think that I could get used to the midnight sun though. I don't know how I would sleep with it being light out, even with the drapes shut. We'd have to put up black out curtains for me

That must have been some weed if Natalya was seeing dragons. I think Shane spiked it with some acid     The naughty minx of a lad

This is fun. I can't wait to read about their next adventure!

This is the town where they are going: Helsingor

Chapter 93

"Kids, since this is your last day in Copenhagen, we ought to get out of the city and do something cultural", said Lars.

"I understand, we do have to catch a train tomorrow. And I heard that part of Jutland is wonderful", said Natalya.

"Yeah, I saw that in a book once. From there, we go onto Oslo and the rest of Norway. I don't want to see that asshole anytime soon, we got plenty of time, lalka", said Shane.

Lars, Torben, Mariska, Shane and Natalya were in Torben's enormous black Lincoln Navigator on their way to Helsingor. It was supposedly the site of Hamlet's castle, and it had good views across the Oresund to Sweden.

That sounds cool, maybe we can see some ghosts, thought Shane, smiling at the idea.

The car sped through the Zealand countryside, Diamond Head blaring from the speakers. It was lovely late spring day, the belt of green trees concealing the view of the Oresund. Occasionally, a flash of blue would peak out from behind the green, the sun glinting off the surface. On the other side of the road, farmers rode tractors or checked on their crops, the bleat of sheep penetrating even the heavy walls and loud music inside the car.

Lars and Torben were conversing loudly in Danish, trying to be heard over the music. Shane rolled his eyes as Natalya smiled knowingly. She unconsciously snuggled against him, her hair tickling his face. Her lips were barely an inch from his as he held his breath.

"Come on, kids. We're here", said Lars, an amused gleam in his eyes. Shane hastily moved away, as Natalya turned deep red.

"For shame, Uncle Lars. You embarrassed her", he chided, as she smiled gratefully at him.

"Come on kids, let's go see Hamlet's castle", said Torben, parking the Lincoln in a parking lot downtown.

They walked out of the garage and into the sunlight. It was only a few minutes walk from the modern part to medieval section of the town. Half-timbered houses made of stone, wood and thatch stood on the side of the street, the cobblestones hard under their feet. The houses were mostly for display, but a few sold fudge, souvenirs, ice cream and clothes. The street was crowded with tourists, loud Danish and Swedish voices filling the air.

Natalya's eyes in delight when she saw the display in the window of a candy shop. Chocolates of every description were displayed, ranging from the palest white chocolate to the darkest, in all shapes and sizes. Brilliantly colored lollipops and gummies gleamed in the light, sitting next to a real gingerbread house.

"Wow, badass", said Shane.

"You kids get some candy, but don't eat too much, there is a good seafood restaurant here, we are going there later", said Mariska.

Shane led her inside, the scent of chocolate lingering in the air. A giant display case held fudge and chocolates of every conceivable type, the variety making their heads spin.

"I know, you got a sweet tooth, lalka", he chuckled.

"Godmorgen. Hvordan ma jeg hjelp sier?", asked the elderly lady behind the counter.

"I will have the Rocky Road fudge", said Natalya.

"And I will have the peanut butter", said Shane.

The old lady nodded and got their fudge, as Shane landed her the money. Natalya bit into her fudge, her blue eyes widening in delight. Shane smiled at her, taking a bite of his own fudge. "I know, you like it, lalka. I bet it's not as sweet as you", he murmured, a gleam in his eyes.
