Even if it does make a scene, I think that Shane should kick his grand daddy's ass. I'd pay good money to see that.

This is Ostersund Ostersund

Chapter 135

They arrived in Ostersund the following afternoon. Their journey from Arctic northern Sweden to the south was pleasant and uneventful, the trip leisurely and relaxing. The terrain had changed from mountains and tundra to green forests and sparkling blue lakes, tidy little towns scattered between the forests.

Shane grabbed their bags as they got off the train. The station was right next to the enormous Lake Storsjon, the placid blue waters crowded with swimmers and sailors in their white-sailed boats.

"We're staying at the Algen Hotel, we're going to see my grandfather tomorrow. We're going to have some time to ourselves tonight, in preparation for tomorrow", he laughed grimly.

They quickly checked into their room at the hotel, Natalya flopping down on the bed. "Let's rest up for a bit, I'm too nervous now. I need to relax" he said, joining her on the bed.

Natalya stroked his hair and kissed his lips. "Relax, Shane. I do hope all goes well tomorrow. Do you have his address?", she asked.

"Yeah, he lives at 704 Tullgatan Street. I looked on a map on Google, the street itself is not far from here but it's out towards the edge of town, in the suburbs. I just hope it all goes well, I don't wanna have to kick an old man's ass", he growled.

"You will not kick an old man's ass, Shane. Your mother is a gracious lady and has taught you better. Now let us relax so we can get something to eat", she chided.

"You're right, baby doll", he said, kissing her cheek and closing his eyes.

Several hours later, they found themselves seated at a table at Captain Cook's, an Australian themed pub in downtown Ostersund. It was an enormous place with two large rooms, a bar/restaurant and a club part where a loud AC/DC tribute act was playing Whole Lotta Rosie. The walls were hung with stuffed koala bears and platypus, neon beer signs casting their glow. It was incongruous, looking as though it belonged in Sydney, not rural Sweden.

The pretty blond waitress in tight leather pants and a Foster's t-shirt served them two large pints of Boddington's, the rich golden ale foaming in the heavy glass mug.

"What would you like, mates?", she asked, trying to sound Australian, but her Swedish accent made her sound almost comical.

"We'll have the cheese fries for starters, and I'll have the steak, medium rare", said Shane.

"And I will have the lamb chops with steamed vegetables", said Natalya.

Shane took a sip of his beer, his eyes sparkling in delight when he tasted the rich ale. "You wanna dance to AC/DC later, baby doll?", he teased.

Natalya took a drink of her own beer, a gleam in her blue eyes. "Tak, if we are still able to move", she chuckled.

"I like a girl with an appetite. You know, you eat just like Kitty. I remember once, we took her to Outback Steakhouse for her birthday with her boyfriend at the time, some dude named Tim. Anyway, she had an appetizer one of those big beers and a steak. You should've seen the look on his face when she ate everything, including dessert. He told her not to eat so much 'cause she was gonna get fat. She later dumped his sorry ass", he grumbled.

"Kitty is not fat at all, and she does eat a lot. But she is healthy and strong, it must be the Polish in us", she giggled.

"Of course, it's in the genes. And some of the most beautiful women in the world", he murmured, as she blushed.

The waitress arrived with their cheese fries, as they continued to eat and talk. They were on their second beers when their food arrived. Shane smiled, his blue eyes gleaming with amusement. Her plate was huge, two large perfectly grilled lamb chops and a baked potato with sour cream and chives, along with steamed vegetables and a tiny bowl of mint jelly.

"Are you sure you can eat all that?", he drawled.

"Can you eat yours, Shane? Let us see, shall we?", she retorted, an amused glint in her eyes.

Shane just winked at her as they began to eat. They continued to talk and drink, the waitress refilling their mugs a third time. As the meal progressed, he was pleasantly surprised at how daintily she ate, while eating everything. She made soft sounds of pleasure, her blue eyes sparkling with delight as she ate, her tongue running over her lower lip and purring like a kitten. That is so damn sexy, I want to hear her purr like that later, he chuckled to himself.

Natalya sank back in her chair with a beatific smile on her face. There was nothing on her plate, except for some peas and bones, as Shane looked at her with wonder in his eyes.

"I always knew you had an appetite, baby doll, but you outdid yourself", he chuckled.

"Dziekuje, Shane. But what did you expect?", she giggled.

"Bad girl. I want to hear you purr like that later", he murmured, as the waitress cleared away the plates.

"Do you still want to dance to AC/DC?", she asked, draining her mug.

"Don't mind if I do, baby doll", he replied gallantly, leading her onto the dance floor.

Hooray for "Whole Lotta Rosie." :D :dance :D

I would suppose that since she's very very tall, that Kitty would eat a lot. She'd have a bigger stomach than a small person would. But maybe not. I have a female friend who's almost 6 feet tall and she barely eats anything. I eat more than she does, actually a child eats more.

This story rocks out. I wonder how Shane has spent on food though. :D They eat a lot.

Good for Kitty for dumping that guy's ass! One of the many reasons I like my husband so much is he likes to eat as much as I do. He never ever gets on me about it. Even though I keep relatively thin from swimming, I had a boyfriend when I was younger get on me about food. Now he's married to a friend of mine and I feel so bad for her- she's spent the last 15 years having to listen to him bitch about it.

That city sounds incredible (did some research and added it to my "must visit" list)- but maybe a tiny bit cold! I'm getting way too used to Florida's heat. I wonder how warm the water is in Lake Storsjon? I'll have to look that up.

And an Australian themed pub in the middle of Sweden- random, but cool!

"The terrain had changed from mountains and tundra to green forests and sparkling blue lakes," Damn, they get to see sooo many awesome landscapes and places! This fic rocks, it kind of makes you feel as if you were travelling too, awesome ! :horns2 And Natalya is really lucky with Shane, caring about her so much!
I wonder how will the meeting with Shane's grandfather go, it's so close! I hope Shane won't have to kick anybody's ass

Chapter 136

The next morning, Shane and Natalya found themselves outside the house at 704 Tullgatan. It was in a pleasant neighborhood outside the town center, all the houses made of pastel wood with slate tiled roofs, green lawns and flowers out front.

The house was just like it's neighbors, made of pale pink wood with white shutters and a black slate roof. Red roses were in bloom outside, the red blooms filling the air with their fragrance.

Shane took a deep breath and Natalya crossed herself. "Here goes nothing, baby doll", he said, as they walked to the door.

Shane rang the doorbell, his heart pounding in fear and anticipation. An eternity passed before someone opened up. An attractive blond woman opened the door, her blue eyes regarding them curiously. She was dressed casually in a long paisley skirt and a purple blouse, her hair pulled back into a ponytail.

"God morgon. Hvordan ma jeg hyelp de?", she asked.

"Hello, ma'am. Does John Macleod live here?", he asked politely.

"Ja, he is my husband", she replied.

"Ma'am, I am his grandson, Shane Burton. I wish to speak to him", he said.

The woman's eyes widened in surprise, her mouth open like a fish's. "What? Let me get John, please wait", she said, going back into the house.

Several minutes later, an old man came to the door. He was tall and thin, his balding red hair shot with gray and his blue eyes wary behind wire-rimmed glasses, leaning on an ivory-tipped cane. The man wore a red flannel bathrobe over pajama bottoms, slippers on his feet.

Shane felt guilty for having wanted to beat him up. If this is my grandfather, he's one old dude. I can't hit him, he'll break like a twig, he thought.

"Aye, who are you?", he asked, speaking with a Scottish accent. The man peered at him closely, his eyes widening in recognition.

"You look just like your father, come in. Jenny, make us some tea", he said, leading them to the parlor.

The house was modest and cozy, decorated with a modern Scandinavian style. The parlor was dominated by a cream leather couch facing a TV, a low coffee table made of glass and pale marbled wood holding up a small porcelain sculpture depicting an elephant balancing a ball on its trunk. It was surrounded by warm pale pink walls, the floor of honey-colored wood.

"Please sit down, you look just like your father, but you have your mother's eyes. I am your grandfather, John Macleod", he said, extending his hand.

"I'm Shane Burton and this is my girlfriend, Natalya Stankowski. Dude, I don't know if I should hug you or strangle you", he cracked.

"Aye, I don't blame you. It was a terrible thing I did, disowning your mother. It was probably the worst thing I've ever done", he said, as Jenny prepared tea.

"Why'd you contact us?", asked Shane.

"I came across your sister's band, Jenny likes that sort of music. Catriona looks just like her father, but with Avery's looks. When I saw her name was Burton, I did a search and Cliff Burton was her father. I am sorry about your father, Shane", he whispered.

"I see. But why now, it's been so long", he said.

John sighed, as Jenny served their tea. "It was Krystyna's fault. She was so angry that Avery married Cliff that she wanted nothing to do with either of them, or the children.

You have to understand, Krystyna was such a proud, forceful woman. We met at Uni, she was so ambitious, so beautiful. It was love at first sight for me, she was so unlike the girls I knew on Uist. When she became pregnant, I was ecstatic, but she wanted an abortion. She was screaming that the baby would ruin her life, that she wouldn't be able to graduate Uni. Her parents made her keep the baby and we promptly got married.

After the wedding, though, Krystyna grew distant. She refused to sleep with me, or do any chores around the house. She later yelled at me and said I ruined her life and that she didn't want the baby. She was very disappointed that Avery was a girl, she wanted a son, feeling a daughter would be a nuisance.

Krystyna went back to work almost immediately after the birth, and she put the baby with her mother. She insisted I work as hard as I could, Krystyna didn't feel I should work less than her.

Shane, your mother was raised by her grandparents, more or less. When I think back to what a workaholic I was, how I let Krystyna neglect her, I weep with shame. I was very upset when Avery married your father, I thought he was a bum. I let my anger blind me, I should've been calm about the situation. I hope they were happy together", said John, tears filling his eyes.

"What happened to Krystyna?", asked Natalya.

"She died in a car accident five years ago. By this time, we had separated and were ready to divorce. I admit I felt little grief at her passing, but a weight had been lifted off my shoulders.

I quit the job I hated and cashed in my pension. I had gone to Sweden on holiday and liked it, I decided to settle here, where I met Jenny", he said, putting an arm around his wife.

"Man, Mom didn't wanna go, 'cause she thought she'd end up killing you. And Kitty just got back from a tour of Japan, she was exhausted. I volunteered to go with Natalya, we took our time. I hope Mom won't kick your ass", he chuckled.

"I do not blame her. I want to make amends, Shane. I am seventy years old, I'll not live forever. I want to know my grandchildren", said John.

"I gotcha, dude", he replied.

Well that's refreshing that the old sod wants to make amends for all the shit that he's put Avery through, but what he should do is tell Avery this to her face. Maybe since Shane knows that he's truly sorry, Avery will come over and hear it for herself. He also can't blame Krystyna for everything. He went along with it and was a dick too.

I wonder if Avery will be able to forgive her father? I can't wait to find out. :D

VERY interesting. I do think this guy bears a lot of responsibility for letting his wife, as beautiful and proud as she was, treat Avery like shit. I mean, you don't just stand by and let someone abuse a child. And it WAS emotional abuse.

I'm glad Shane can be level headed, but I think it's going to be so much tougher for Avery.

This is a great lesson- if you marry the wrong person just because you're smitten or because you're worried you won't find anyone else, you wind up throwing your life away, and maybe someone else's (in this case, Avery's childhood), too.

Chapter 137

"I wish you young people well, and say hello to your mother for me", said John.

"Sure, dude. Hopefully she won't kick your ass", said Shane, embracing him.

Shane and Natalya were standing on the platform of the train station. They were on their way south to Stockholm, where they were going to spend a few days before going back to Copenhagen and flying back to the states.

The train tooted its whistle, as the passengers boarded. It was a large comfortable train, the floor covered in a thick bluish-gray carpet and the seats upholstered in plush blue fabric.

Natalya got the seat next to the window as Shane sat next to her. The train tooted its whistle one last time as it chugged out of the station. John and Jenny waved to them, getting smaller and smaller until they finally disappeared.

"You are gonna love Stockholm, baby doll. It's one gorgeous city, it looks like Venice with all the island on the lake. The nightlife on Sodermalm is awesome, it's as crazy as anything in San Francisco. Whenever Metallica play in Stockholm, they stay at the Diplomat Hotel, that's where we're staying. It's gorgeous, but far from the clubs, I don't wanna hear a bunch of drunks at three in the morning. This is gonna be awesome", he said, his blue eyes sparkling with excitement.

"That sounds so exciting, I cannot wait", she said, her eyes wide.

Six hours later, the train approached the outskirts of Stockholm. They had traveled the length of Sweden, the forests and lakes hiding tidy little vacation houses and villages. People picking berries and hunters had waved to the train as it passed by, even swimmers in a lake waving to them.

This is one beautiful country, I bet Mom and Kitty would love it, he mused.

The train crossed a tunnel under Lake Malaren and emerged into the Central Station downtown. Shane took their bags and led them off the train. It was huge and very busy, loud announcements in Swedish coming from the loudspeakers and passengers rushing to and fro.

"We gotta take the subway, it's only a few stops", he said, confidently leading her to the subway. Unlike American subways, the T-Bana was clean and orderly. The station, T-Centralen on the red line, was immaculate, the gleaming red and silver tile floor shining from a recent polishing. The walls were adorned with colorful, yet understated paintings by local artists, depicting roses in bloom. The red, white, and pink blooms burst forth from the walls in an orgy of color, adding a touch of nature to the urban setting.

The train pulled into the station, as the passengers lined up. Unlike American subway trains, it was very clean, no graffiti or debris on the floor and the windows sparkling from a recent cleaning. The seats were upholstered in bright red vinyl, no cracks or tears in the plastic cloth. There was a ding and the doors close, the subway leaving the station.

The ride to Ostermalmstorg was brief, only ten minutes. Shane almost felt regretful that they had to get off, the ride was so pleasant. He had to smile when he saw she looked the same way.

"I know, but we're going to be using this a lot, baby doll. This is so much nicer than the BART", he said, as they got off the train.

They emerged into the sunlight, into the district of Ostermalm. It was quite beautiful, wide avenues lined with 17th and 18th century buildings in pale brick, some of them sporting coats of arms over the doors. Elegantly dressed, wealthy Stockholmers passed by, the men in suits and the women in designer outfits. Natalya felt frumpy in her denim skirt and purple t-shirt, feeling like a duck amongst swans.

"Don't worry, lalka. you are as beautiful as any of these women. Later on, I'll take if you want, you'll be the envy of every girl here", he said.

They finally arrived at the Diplomat Hotel several minutes later. It was an 18th century building, pale peach brick trimmed with white wood, the Swedish coat of arms over the entrance.

The lobby was done in peach, pale pink and creamy white, the floor of gleaming pale pink and white marble and the walls the palest peach. The white leather sofa sat near the white marble fountain, the water making a pleasant gurgling sound.

"Hvordan ma jeg hyelp de?", asked the clerk, a trim blond man in a blue blazer.

"Reservations under Burton", said Shane.

He typed something into the computer and handed them their keys. "Your room is on the fourth floor, enjoy your stay", he said politely. Shane led them upstairs to the fourth floor. The hallway was done in the same style as the lobby, all pale pink, peach and creamy white.

Their room was just as elegant, the pink a rich deep color, the color of coral. It was dominated by a large, four-poster bed with a white lace canopy, the bed itself covered by a pink comforter stuffed with feathers. The cream carpet felt plush and soft under their feet, the whole ambiance elegant and sensual.

"Moj Bog, this is a beautiful room", she murmured, removing her shoes and flopping down on the bed.

"I know, lalka. Why do you think Metallica stay here? Let's rest for a bit and get something to eat", he said, taking her into his arms and closing his eyes.

Thank you for the links!! Grogeous stuff.

That train sounds amazing. I want a clean train to ride! I have never been on a remotely clean train- the cleanest are the monorails at Disney and the one at the Atlanta airport. The MARTA system in Atlanta isn't terrible, at least not when compared to the shitty subways in NYC.

I know, Maisy, I live near NYC. The subways are horrible, they're smelly, dirty, and full of homeless people and drunks. You can't lean too close to the track 'cause some crazy guy might throw you on the tracks :o And several years ago, some crazy homeless dude was stabbing random people on the subway with dirty needles, some people contracted AIDS from that guy :o :angry Just be very careful when you get on the subway. And this is the part of Stockholm where they go: Sodermalm

Chapter 138

Natalya woke up several hours later. She smiled when she saw that Shane was still asleep, his auburn hair tickling her cheek. His eyes fluttered open, a slow smile forming on his lips. "Good evening, lalka. Are you hungry?", he asked, stroking her hair.

Natalya shivered at his touch, seeing the lustful gleam in his blue eyes. "Tak, Shane. But we must shower and get dressed, the ladies here in Stockholm are so elegant", she sighed.

"Just put on your best outfit, baby doll. You are gonna wow everyone here tonight", he said, leading her to the shower.

They emerged from the shower fifteen minutes later and got dressed. Shane wore black slacks and a buttoned-down white shirt, his auburn hair freshly combed and falling to his shoulders. Natalya was dressed in a simple royal blue sheath, her blond hair loose around her face and the faintest hint of makeup on her face.

"You look so beautiful, lalka", he murmured. Shane opened a box and took out a necklace, placing it around her throat. It was a dazzling sapphire and pearl necklace, the sapphires the color of her dress and the pearls bringing out the creaminess of her complexion.

"Oh Shane, it is so beautiful", she whispered, delicately touching the necklace.

"Thanks. I bought it when we were in Oslo, I was going to give it to you for your birthday, but I thought it'll come in handy tonight", he said.

Natalya smiled in delight and kissed him, her blue eyes sparkling. "Dziekuje, Shane", she said.

"No problem, baby doll. Follow me, my lady", he said gallantly, offering her his arm.

"Where are we going, Shane?", she asked, as they left the hotel.

"We're going to Sodermalm Island, that's where the really good clubs and restaurants are. Uncle Kirk knows this great Thai restaurant, Koh Phangan. He likes to take me and Kitty there when we're in Stockholm. Mom doesn't like Thai food, she and Uncle Lars go to this fancy Swedish place in Gamla Stan that serves moose and who knows how many types of herring. I haven't had good Thai food in months", he said longingly.

"Isn't it spicy, though?", she asked, as they entered the subway station.

"Yeah, do you mind?", he asked, buying two tokens from a machine.

"No, it means you can drink more beer", she giggled.

"Bad girl. We gotta take the red line to the Central Station, then we transfer to the green line, we get off at Skanstull", he said.

The green line train was immaculate like its cousin, crowded with young people on their way to Sodermalm for a night of partying. Most of the young people wore the latest fashions, beautiful women escorted by handsome men. The train added more passengers with each stop until it was close to bursting. However, no one seemed to mind, the excitement of the crowd becoming infectious like a virus.

Almost everyone piled off the train at Skanstull, only a few people left on board as it headed out to the suburbs. Shane took her hand and led her out of the station, past the teeming crowds of partygoers.

They emerged onto Gatgatan, one of the main streets of the island. It was lined with trendy cafes, clubs and boutiques, hip young Swedish people chatting on cell phones, window shopping and laughing at each other's jokes.

Natalya took it all in with wide eyes. The stores, the cafes, the people were far more sophisticated than any she'd encountered in San Francisco. The women were all elegant and beautiful, dressed in the latest designer outfits, their hair perfectly coiffed and their makeup perfect.

"Relax, baby doll. You are beautiful, these girls can't hold a candle to you", he said, squeezing her hand.

They arrived at the restaurant several minutes later. It was a small brick building flanked by plastic but life-like palm trees, several people reading the menu posted outside.

"Table for two", he said.

The greeter nodded and led them inside the restaurant. The main room contained a long polished bar crowded with elegant people drinking martinis, the room itself decked out to resemble a jungle. The walls were painted a dark forest green, leafy silk palm leaves hanging overhead like a canopy. There was the distant rumble of thunder coming from loudspeakers mounted on the wall behind the palm leaves, a fine mist hanging in the air.

Shane held out a chair for her before sitting down himself. The waiter handed them their menus before discreetly leaving. Natalya opened the menu and frowned when she saw the unfamiliar dishes.

"What do I order?", she asked.

"Don't worry, I'll order for you. Do you want the food spicy?", he asked.

"Tak", she replied, a gleam in her eyes.

The waiter came over to their table and smiled at them. "We'll have two beers. I will have the red curry with shrimp, and she'll have the Pad Thai, spicy", he said.

The waiter took their orders and nodded, leaving them alone. "If you like, I'll take you to a Thai restaurant when we get home. It's been a while since I've been here, there's some awesome clubs here and in Gamla Stan", he said.

"Shane, you have traveled so much, and I thought from Poland to San Francisco was far", said Natalya wistfully.

"Yeah, I know. I've been to Poland and seen Warsaw and Krakow. Very nice cities and the fans there are crazy. And the chicks there are hot, of course, I know that already", he chuckled, bringing her hand to his lips.

The waiter arrived with their food and beer. Natalya took a sip of her beer and then a bite of the food. Her eyes widened in delight when she first tried the food. "You like it, baby doll?", he chuckled, eating his own food.

Natalya sat back in her chair with a beatific smile on her face. "Moj Bog, that was good", she purred, draining her beer.

"Glad you liked it, baby doll. Now we're gonna walk it off, there's a lot of clubs here", he said, as he paid the bill and helped her from the seat.

I like it when Shane talks about Uncle Kirk and Lars. It makes me smile. :)

I think I'd starve over there. I don't like Thai food, even though I like spicy food, and I would never eat moose or herring. I guess that all that I'd eat is pastries. :drool Dude, I didn't know that about the subways in NYC. I got seperated from my hubby once on the subways there. I jumped on the wrong one and he was still reading the map and then the door closed and he wasn't on it. I was trying to go see the Statue of Liberty, but ended up in Harlem by myself instead. Fortunately, I didn't see any drunks though so it was all good. :dance

I LOVE Pad Thai. We haven't had Thai food in years, I don't think. Not since Gracie came home... hmmm we need to get some. I am not a huge fan of spicy, though- I'd much rather have vinegar/sour tastes.

Shane is so sweet to Natalya. The necklace sounded lovely.
