James sat at home in L.A watching his son’s game on ESPN—the team were losing for the first time all season and Castor sat on the injury bench with his head in his hands. James and I were curled up on the couch together enjoying a quiet Saturday night in, and I was drifting slowly to sleep with my head resting on his shoulder. His warm hand smoothed our baby and I stretched my arm out across his middle, cosying into his body even further. I had been sleeping for just a short minute before James’ phone rang. It vibrated loudly in his pocket before starting in a sharp ring.

‘Sorry!’ he hushed me back to sleep before turning the touchscreen of his iphone towards him.

‘Shit—it’s Francesca’ he apologised. I nodded, knowing not to say a word. He answered slowly, making her wait down the line for another few rings. He adjusted his voice to answer.

‘Hello?’ he said plainly.

‘Are you watching this?’ she began sadly. He knew she meant the game his son’s team were losing without him.

‘Yeah—I am’ he admitted. He cleared his throat gruffly as he always did when he felt awkward or nervous. Francesca sighed too and James though he knew what was coming.

‘He really has to marry her, or nothing good will come of this’ she began. James pinched his forehead in frustration, he disagreed.

‘Does it matter when they get married?’ he began, knowing neither his son nor his girlfriend were ready yet anyhow.

‘Of course it does, James! Pastor Robbins….’ She began, but he stopped her once more.

‘They are still so young—give them time’ James said calmly. ‘All that matters is that we have a healthy grandchild and that they are happy’ James reflected wisely.

‘Yes, but it worries me’ she continued neurotically. ‘What if Castor….?’ but she couldn’t finish her sentence.

‘What is Castor does what?’ James asked her to continue.

‘What if he leaves her because they’re not married? What if he falls in love with some other girl and marries her! Where does that leave poor Lilly?’ Francesca pleaded with James to see. James knew she didn’t want to see her growing up as a single mother. They had taken Lilly into their family as their own over the years. James too hoped his son would not do as he had done. There had been so many other women over the years that Francesca had never known about.

‘Lets just see what happens’ James suggested. His voice was calm and controlled.

‘Why are you so cool about this?’ Francesca asked in disbelief. She had noticed a definite change in his attitude these past few months, despite only seeing him once in the past eight weeks. James thought privately on the news on how he would soon be a father once more had changed him.

‘I don’t know’ he began casually. ‘I just think we let them figure this out’ he shrugged. I listened with my body resting against his, I could hear Francesca’s voice down the line. James’ voice resonated in his chest against my ear as he spoke.

‘But he’s just a boy, James!’ she pleaded. ‘He doesn’t know what he’s done yet! He has no idea how hard it is being a parent!’ she cried.

‘We can’t teach him that, Francesca’ James replied reflectively. ‘He has to learn that on his own’. His ex-wife was silent down the line for a long moment.

‘When are you coming home, James?’ she asked sadly. ‘I miss you’ she added in a small voice. His heart ached at the secret he was keeping—she had no idea he had settled in L.A with Hannah, preparing for their new baby.

‘I don’t know’ he answered honestly. I raised my head from his chest to offer him strength. I had thought he was about to confess all to her on the phone. But instead, he continued his charade.

‘It’ll be soon’ he promised vaguely. He made his excuse and ended the call. I returned my head to his beating chest and he stroked my loose blonde hair.

‘I’ll have to tell her and the girls soon’ he admitted out loud. I knew.

Castor burst through the front door, he had arrived home after the game.

‘Dad!’ he yelled. ‘The Dallas Cowboys scouts are coming back next weekend just to see me play!’ James and I smiled warmly at Castor. James had been holding the tv remote morosely in his hand expecting his son to be depressed when he returned after the team’s first loss all season.

‘Castor! That’s great!’ I left James’ body so he could embrace his son. James hugged Castor tightly with a wide grinning smile. Lilly had made it down the stairs hearing Castor was home. She watched James and Castor celebrating and smiled in question. Castor kissed her warmly in welcome.

‘Lets go upstairs, I’ll tell you everything!’ he grinned.

Well yes--obviously Francesca is gonna find out sometime soon. Hannah is 5 months pregnant and that's not gonna go down well with Francesca, considering she has no idea Hannah is even in the US and that James has been seeing her again. Nor is finding out that James has gone and bought a house in Hollywood without telling her. :o

James was back in the private box to see his son play the important semi-final game of the season. The Dallas Cowboy scouts were seated directly in front of James, they had shaken his hand eagerly and promised James and his family the chance to visit anytime they wished. James knew their style, he also knew they’d tempted Castor with $20 million as a starting contract before he was even listed as a draft player. Perhaps they were serious, James didn’t really know—but for now, all eyes were on Castor as he had the toughest game of the season to prove himself. The first quarter was a tough struggle, the opposition were fierce and desperate to advance ahead of the Trojan’s. Castor pushed his way through the line of defence the best he could. He was tackled hard, two offensive line-backers were playing dirty, but Castor didn’t care he pushed through and made the touchline. The opposition spat the dummy at Castor’s repeat touchdowns. ‘Pretty boy!’ they yelled. But even still, Castor shone and the Trojan’s were ahead by double the score at the end of the third quarter. James relaxed in his seat after a tense opening to the game. The Dallas scouts were writing numbers on a piece of paper and passing it back and forth in discussion. James eyed them from the seat behind---he wanted Castor to have a chance to impress the Raider’s scouts again. The draft announcement was only a month away now.

The game ended to the triumphant roar of the USC Trojan’s fans. They had won by a long way, thanks to Castor’s efforts. Once he was on a roll, he had not let the opposition bounce back for even a minute. James followed the scouts to the player’s lounge and Castor joined his father. James couldn’t help but give him a bear hug in front of his team-mates.

‘Thanks Dad!’ Castor blushed. James used the opportunity to speak into his son’s ear. The scouts were honing in on them.

‘They want you!’ James whispered eagerly. Castor’s eyes were wide—he’d only thought the Cowboys were stirring, he didn’t think they would make him a draft offer for real. ‘Here they come!’ James patted Castor on the back proudly. The two Texans approached the Hetfield’s through the busy player’s lounge with a bold walk. James noticed Castor’s coach was nowhere to be seen.

‘Son! Great game today, great game!’ he congratulated him with a heavy and vigorous handshake.

‘Thank you, Sir!’ Castor nervously accepted their praise. James stayed by his son’s side as his witness.

‘We’re prepared to offer you a starting salary of $22 million next fall’ they spoke as privately as they could. ‘When you turn 20 in May next year you can officially join us. We’d let you stay playing here until then’ Castor’s eyes bulged wide.

‘You let us know anytime you want to visit—and you bring your pretty lady with you too!’ the second scout winked. Castor couldn’t speak, his mouth gaped open in surprise as he shook hands. The scouts were gone before coach made the player’s lounge. It was an unofficial offer and a cheeky one at that. James patted Castor briskly on the back.

‘I’m pleased to say that your mother and I are both wrong’ he spoke warmly to his son.

‘You’ll do just fine—if they want you, then you go’ Castor couldn’t believe the words coming from his father’s mouth. He’d been certain he’d have wanted his son to play for the Oakland Raiders. ‘The Radier’s can’t beat that Castor—they don’t even pay their top players money like that!’ James tried not to raise his voice. ‘Wait for the draft next month—go and visit the team in Dallas while you’re there, talk to them more, you’ll make it kid!’ Castor’s eyes welled up at his father’s speech.

‘Oh look!’ James pointed through the crowd at his coach making a bee-line straight for them.

‘They’ve gone!’ he growled at Castor. ‘Oh well, maybe next year!’ he said angrily. Castor let him assume all deals were off. ‘You played like a star, son!’ coach punched his fist in the air.
