Once again, I defer to my avatar as my response :P
Well, perhaps Texas is a little further from California than James and Francesca would have liked, but Castor's got the best deal in history.
I hope he can make the team better, they haven't been doing so well these days

James did well not to be disappointed that he didn't get picked by the Oakland Raiders. Don't you think?

Castor and Lilly had gone home to San Rafael to see Francesca. To Castor’s surprise, his older sister Cali was home for spring break. He hadn’t seen her since their trip to Colorado to see him play. Marcella surprised her brother too—she threw her arms around him. It was the first time either of his sisters had seen Lilly with her baby bump showing. They listened to her belly and smoothed her tummy, it was the first baby of the new generation in their family. Castor couldn’t believe that he’d have a new half- brother or sister and a new baby of his own within a month of each other. After a long happy dinner with his family, Castor helped his mother in the kitchen. It had been a long time since he had been home when he had been injured. He had some new for her that he wanted to share with her first. He helped his mother clean the kitchen.

‘Mom—do you want to know the sex of the baby?’ he asked her with a secretive grin.

‘Oh Castor! Do you know already?’ she gasped. She turned to him with an elated smile.

‘Yes—we know. Do you want to wait until the baby comes or shall I tell you now?’ he teased.

‘Please tell me!’ she was so excited for her first grandchild.

‘Alright, well we’re having a boy!’ he grinned.

‘Oh, Castor!’ she hugged her son tightly for a long moment. ‘Oh that’s fantastic! Your Dad will be so pleased!’ Castor knew he would be, but he had wanted to keep the news to tell his mother first.

‘I thought I’d tell you first, Mom. I missed you in Dallas’ he admitted. Francesca set out five coffee cups slowly before she answered.

‘I really wanted to be there, Castor’ she began sadly. ‘But I couldn’t stand there on the stage next to your father with Hannah’ she shook her head and wiped her eyes.

‘I just can’t believe what he’s gone and done’ she said. Castor sighed, he had long since acknowledged that his father was in love with Hannah. He saw his dad’s relationship with Hannah as a healthy change. He hated seeing his parents unhappy with each other. He knew change was not as easy for his mother to accept.

‘Do you like her, Hannah I mean?’ Francesca asked.

‘She’s nice, yeah I do’ Castor admitted. He didn’t want to hurt his mother’s feelings, but at the same time, he wanted to relax the tension between her and James. Francesca said nothing.

‘So when are you moving to Dallas?’ she asked, changing the subject.

‘In August—a few weeks before season starts’ he explained.

‘That’s when the baby’s due!’ she realised out loud. ‘Castor! You won’t be here for the birth?’ Francesca was immediately disappointed.

‘Mom—it’s just the way it’s worked out, I’m sorry’ Castor admitted. He couldn’t help that their baby was due August 31st--the same week the new season started.
Lilly joined them in the kitchen and he kissed her warmly.

‘Lilly and I would really love you to come and stay for a few weeks after he’s born to help us out’ Francesca agreed with a happy nod. She had cried a few tears at the thought of missing the birth of her first grandchild.

‘Mom, we both really want you around to help when the baby comes’ Castor explained kindly. Francesca’s hand reached out to touch Lilly’s growing belly.

‘I’m sure Marcella wouldn’t mind a month or two in Dallas’ she smiled.

'And do you have a date set for the wedding?’ she asked eagerly. She had already inspected Lilly’s beautiful diamond engagement ring.

‘Please do it before you go to Dallas?’ she begged again.

Castor looked to Lilly with a knowing glance, their news was to break it to his mother that they would wait until after the baby was born to marry.

‘Mom, we’re thinking early next spring’ Castor admitted. ‘But we will come back home for the wedding’ he added, knowing it would please her.

‘And we’d love to get married here, in the back garden’ Lilly smiled. Francesca beamed a wide grin.

‘Yes, yes of course!’ she hugged them both happily.

‘Oh, that sounds wonderful!’ she added.

That's one way to distract Francesca: Asking her to be a live-in grandma and telling her you want the wedding at the house :biggrin

Live in grandmother for a month = Castor can try and start the new season.
Wedding at the house = can't be bothered planning the wedding themselves.
Hopefully she actually heard the part about it being next year, and not before the baby's due!

Castor and Lilly’s engagement party was at the Troubadour in downtown L.A. James still remembered it the way it had been in the early eighties when he had met Lars. It had been a proper underground club, filled with a lot of the friends he had made and still had now. James could still see Cliff with a beer in hand, entertaining Lars, Scott and Mike. They had played some of their first gigs here and James felt at home here again for the first time in over thirty years. The club could not be more different now—the photos of the musicians it had made famous hung on the walls around them. James looked around pensively and his eyes welled up. A portrait of his friend Kurt Cobain hung on the wall in front of him, Cliff’s was just a few frames down. Large framed pictures of Elton John, Bonnie Rait and Bruce Springsteen were centre on the wall. I found James in the club and slipped my arm inside his, and he turned to me with a warm smile. I offered him a pepsi and he took it with thanks.

‘I was just looking, remembering when we used to hang out here a long time ago’ James admitted. ‘Have I ever shown you a photo of Cliff?’ he asked me. I shook my head, I didn’t think he had. James led me by the hand weaving through the crowd to the far wall where Cliff’s portrait hung. I looked carefully at the man with wild messy red hair playing a red and white bass guitar on stage. His mouth roared an open chant, his jeans were tight blue flares—I thought he looked like a throwback to the 70’s. Cliff’s expression was vivacious and youthful, it was hard to imagine that he had not lived forever. I rubbed James’ back kindly; his eyes had splashed tears down his cheeks.

‘He was my best friend’ James admitted. He wiped his eyes and a hugged him tightly as best I could. James rested his hand pensively on our baby.

‘I wanted to name Castor, Cliff’ James admitted. ‘But Francesca…didn’t think we should’ he admitted heavily. He seemed to have kept that thought to himself all these years. He held me for a long moment silently, but I knew the thoughts the ran through his mind. I had never had such a close friend die, I couldn’t begin to understand what he and his friends had endured for so long.

‘You’d love the new album’ James spoke to Cliff’s image. I smiled, I’m sure every day in the studio must remind James of him. James returned Cliff’s smile.

‘I love you, Hannah’ he whispered. James turned his head to the sound of Castor’s voice. He had called for everyone’s attention from the bar.

‘Thanks everyone for coming!’ Castor began. Lilly stood proudly at his side and Castor offered her a kiss for the crowd.

‘Save the date, May 4th next year—the wedding will be in San Rafael’ Castor hesitated, he had been about to say ‘at mom and dad’s’ instead he turned to Lilly for her help.

‘We can’t wait—and there will be news in late August about the baby!’ Lilly smiled, patting her middle. Their friends cheered happily. The party resumed and Castor made his way through the crowd to James and I. He grinned as though there were a secret on his face.

‘Dad! Guess what?’ he began. He had accepted his father’s tight hug, noticing his red eyes. Castor knew the photo of Cliff had brought his father to tears. 'Dad—I just wanted to tell you, the baby is a boy!’ he smiled widely. James thought for a second he saw his own grin in his son’s broad smile.

‘That’s fantastic!’ he pulled Castor into a tight hug, and his tears fell openly this time.

‘You’ll love having a son!’ James cried. He patted Castor on the back, congratulating him. I held back my own tears at James’ happiness for his son.

‘We’ll make his middle name James, just like mine is Virgil after grandpa’ Castor offered. James nodded graciously at his son’s suggestion.

‘Go enjoy your party’ James suggested warmly, clearing the air. He didn’t want his son to see him cry anymore. Castor nodded, his football mates had arrived in a large noisy group. James turned to me in pride.

‘I was always scared that he’d go wrong, but he’s really proved himself that kid’ he admitted. I knew what James meant; I had seen Castor grow from a boy into a man too.

‘It’s funny—I see Anthony with that same determination’ James began. He turned to me sadly. ‘I know he’s not my son, but I see myself in him sometimes’ he admitted. I paused on James’ eyes, there was something I had always suspected about Anthony, but I'd never told James and never confessed it to Ray. Even Francesca had wondered. I decided not to suggest it now.

‘You’re a great father, James’ I reassured him with a loving kiss.
