Honestly, I thought he would beat his chest like a gorilla (he just strikes me as that sort). Perhaps he did that mentally when Hannah came clean about Anthony Can't wait for more! *swims around* |

Oh yes, he'll be doing plenty of that when Castor's son is born very soon! Lilly is due in less than a month.

Two days later as we arrived home, Cali and Marcella had arrived to meet their new half-sister. Cali held Chelsea with a surprising smile; she had always been unable to really accept her father’s relationship with Hannah. Her arms registered how light and soft the newborn was. Marcella noted her resemblance to her sister with a smile. ‘She’s so gorgeous!’ Marcella smiled. James agreed, smoothing her shoulder. He was pleased all his kids were here together. As yet, he hadn’t told Castor or the girls they had Anthony too as a younger half-brother. I knew still, that James had more to say on the subject, but for now he was celebrating the birth of his daughter. Cali handed Chelsea’s small body carefully to her sister, and Marcella held her in awe. Castor and Lilly watched knowing their time to meet their new baby would come very soon. He had spent time with Chelsea at the hospital in utter disbelief. James watched Lilly squeeze his hand in support. Later that night, James stole his oldest daughter for a talk on the glass balcony that overlooked the dark lacquered sea. He had built himself up to a heart-to-heart with his daughter knowing she had always disliked Hannah and would be struggling still to come to terms with her knew sister. ‘Do you have a boyfriend at the moment?’ James asked his oldest daughter casually as an awkward ice-breaker. ‘Oh Dad….’ She moaned rolling her eyes. ‘Just asking’ James said defensively. ‘Well don’t—it’s weird’ Cali retaliated. She ignored her father and kept staring out to sea. For a long moment they were silent and James did the same until finally she spoke. ‘Dad, you need to talk to mom’ she said, facing her father. James’ face was confused. He leant on the railing bearing his weight on his forearms. ‘What do you mean?’ he asked. His voice was a little concerned. ‘She’s getting really depressed. Marcella’s leaving home next year and she’ll be all on her own in our big house! Castor’s leaving for Dallas, I’m moving off campus next semester so I won’t be going home for semester break anymore’ Cali explained. ‘And you’ve left’ she added bitterly. James thought carefully on his daughter’s revelation before replying. He knew he was not completely responsible for his ex-wife’s emotional state but it would be futile to tell his opinionated daughter so. ‘Alright’ was all he could manage, wanting to leave the subject alone. He had not even directly told Francesca that Chelsea had been born. But equally, she had not contacted him. If he was honest, he was concerned to hear that Francesca was not well. He changed the subject, but it was another equally difficult topic. ‘I’m sorry I’ve not seen you much this year, Cali’ he apologised. He was thinking still how much his 19 year old had grown since he had seen her last. Although, he noted his daughter had not asked to visit him during the year either. James knew she had spent a lot of time visiting her mother back home instead of James and Hannah in L.A. He knew he had damaged his relationship with Cali when she had been the one to find out that Hannah was a prostitute. ‘You’re always welcome here, you know that don’t you?’ he offered kindly. He hoped he could repair what fissure his relationship with Hannah had caused between him and his eldest daughter. ‘I know, Dad’ she offered his chest a modest hug. She seemed to have a question on her mind as she withdrew from the hug. ‘Dad, did you ever pay Hannah for sex?’ she asked testing him. James characteristically cleared his throat defensively. ‘Cali—I’m not answering that’ he replied sternly. His refusal sealed his guilt and she continued spitefully. He saw Hannah inside and hoped she could not hear them talking. ‘Mom says you’re a bad role model’ she repeated. James knew Francesca’s opinion of him by now, he’d heard it before about Castor. He had nothing to say about that either. ‘Just don’t screw up this time, Dad’ she prophesied as she turned and left him standing on the balcony alone. It was bad enough that James felt the world on his shoulders to do the best for his new baby daughter, but he knew still he had a lot of work to do with his eldest. |

Sorry I haven't commented in a while Hope you can forgive me!!! Yay baby is born, Anothony is James' son and well Cali isn't all to happy with the situation but I guess that's to be expected. I know, that if I was in her shoes I don't think I would be happy about my father leaving my mother for another woman. At the same time though she needs to realize that if there's no chemistry between two people, it's not going to work. Well.....I guess that's James' fault lol. Still, I'm curious.....what will happen to Fran? Are Hanna and James going to get married?? What is Castor going to be like after his baby is born? I already know you know Gimmie more woman!!! |

James helped Castor and Lilly pack the car to the airport tearfully. He didn’t want his son to leave the makeshift family home in L.A, but he knew all the same that Dallas would be the home of the next major step in his life. James rattled off a list of things they would need for the baby. Lilly still had three weeks to go of her pregnancy. James reminded Castor a second and third time that he would need to watch her all the time and step up and be a father. Castor nodded, like he’d heard this all before but James knew nothing could prepare him for the fright of his first child’s birth. He almost relished the fact that no matter what he said, his son would still have to learn it for himself. Lilly spent her last hour in L.A with us holding Chelsea in disbelief. She knew her own son would be in her arms soon enough. I watched her with a kind smile. ‘You can come back and visit us anytime’ I smiled. I had enjoyed us both sharing our pregnancies together. James had driven them to the airport while I stayed behind with the kids. When he returned home, his face was streaming was tears and I held him tightly. ‘I think that was the hardest thing I’ve ever done’ he sobbed ‘watching my son leave home’. He wiped his eyes with his sleeve and I offered him Chelsea to hold. ‘Well, luckily, you’ve got another one to nurture’ I kissed. His eyes poured as he took in his new daughter’s face. He took a deep breath and collected himself, clearing his throat with a masculine growl. ‘I’m an old man!’ he told us both. I grinned, I knew he was thinking about how he would soon be a grandfather. ‘You’ll still love me even when I’m old and gray and a popa?’ he asked me teasingly. ‘It’s not gray, it’s silver and it’s sexy!’ I laughed combing his hair with my fingers. I kissed him again and this time his mouth held mine for a long moment. ‘They’ll land in Dallas in two hours’ James observed out loud checking his watch. ‘How was Lilly when they left?’ I asked. I had thought she had bonded particularly closely with Chelsea this past week. ‘She gave me a hug’ James remembered kindly. He thought carefully before he spoke. ‘I hope Castor’s over picking up girls’ he mumbled. I could see the thought that he was taking after James was worrying him; that perhaps, Francesca was right and he was a bad influence on his son. I was quiet, I wasn’t sure what else to say about Castor’s infidelity, except that it had most obviously been a mistake. ‘He’ll figure out that being a dad is important, and if he really loves Lilly he’ll step up’ I said, trying to reassure James. ‘I hope being a crappy father doesn’t run in the family’ he admitted. It was the first time I’d heard him put himself down. ‘James, you’re an amazing father!’ I scorned him. He shook his head in tears as he held Chelsea. ‘Cali hates me, Marcella will be in Boston soon so I’ll barely see her, Castor is gone….’ he trailed off as he admitted his weaknesses. I knew he was only thinking this way because he was upset about seeing off Castor. ‘James stop it, you’re being silly’ I said gently. I took Chelsea from his arms as I settled in to breastfeed. He watched me quietly with an observing smile. ‘Did you always know that Anthony was my son?’ he asked gently. He stroked Chelsea’s small head as I nursed her. ‘I thought so when I was pregnant, and when he was born and he looked like you I knew. But I didn’t want Ray to think anything else’ I admitted. James nodded, he understood that much. ‘But when we were together when he was a baby, you never told me?’ he asked sadly. I had known he would bring it up. ‘I just didn’t want to put pressure on you to leave Francesca, I wanted you to decide to do that on your own’ I explained. ‘And I wanted Ray to get better and want Anthony back in his life, and I knew you always would be there for us, even if Ray couldn’t be’ I said. ‘I’d have never let you go if I knew Anthony was my son!’ James exclaimed. ‘Hannah—I’d have never gone back to Francesca!’ he blurted out. My eyes widened in surprise. ‘I would never miss years out of Anthony’s life! He’s almost five and I’ve only been around for two years of his life!’ he raised his voice, but was careful not to be aggressive. ‘I know’ I said in a small voice. ‘That’s not your fault, James’. ‘I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed I didn’t get to be around as much as I would’ve been if I’d known’ he explained. He stood from the couch and rubbed his hands over his tired face. ‘I’m sorry Hannah, I’m tired, I don’t want to argue’ he apologised. He yawned widely and checked his watch. It was 11pm. ‘I’m gonna head to bed, are you coming?’ he asked gently in apology. He lifted Chelsea into his arms she cried a little until she settled, feeling her father's warmth. ‘You’ll be fine my darling’ he kissed her small forehead and her blue eyes searched her father’s in hope. |

While Castor had remembered everything his father had said, the reality that his son would soon be born had not sunk in. They had barely settled into their new home for three days before he started his first day of pre-season training with the Dallas Cowboys. Lilly had spent the day unpacking their things, piling Castor’s clothes and his hundreds of football shirts in drawers and feeling strangely alone in their large house. She had never been wealthy in her life, never had more than a week’s wages in her bank account, and quietly, she had never told Castor about her student loans for Berkeley and certainly never mentioned that although their new $18 million mansion in Dallas was within Castor’s means, her $80,000 student loan was far beyond hers to ever pay back. She knew even a single season of Castor’s wages would set them up for life, and that now that life was hers too. But still, her mind had not ticked over—it was impossible to do, she could barely believe it as she walked silently around the house inspecting each vacant room. It was all theirs. She had decided on a small sunny room adjacent to theirs as a nursery for their son. So far, a large wooden crib sat in the corner of the room. Castor had assembled it the day before and they had brought some baby clothes with them as a present from Francesca, but still two weeks from her due date they were not as prepared as they could be. After an exhausting morning, Lilly had spent the afternoon resting her tired body sleeping on the couch in the lounge. She woke at 6pm expecting Castor would be home, but no sound accompanied her in the large house. She searched sleepily for her phone under the cushions and checked for messages, there was one. Lilly—I’m going out with the guys tonight for a team welcome. Be back late, Castor. She had almost cried, irrationally so, but she needed him. She felt hopelessly lost and scared, having just past her 20th birthday as had he, they were both about to become young parents. She wiped her tears and stayed sleeping on the couch, wishing that she might be back in California with her own family. This was not what she expected, that Castor might never be home for them. Finally, at 2am Castor arrived home noisily on his own. He dropped his keys on the marble kitchen bench and flicked on the lights in the lounge to find Lilly awake covered in a blanket. ‘Honey! Why aren’t you in bed?’ he asked sadly. He knelt at her side for a welcoming kiss. ‘I can’t sleep without you at the moment—the baby is so restless’ she explained. She winced to sit up and held her large baby bump as she did. ‘Oh my God!’ she cried out in surprise at the sudden pain. Her face scrunched tight into a painful howl. Castor’s face dropped in fright. ‘What’s happening?’ he yelped helplessly. ‘I think the baby’s coming!’ she screamed, the pain had overtaken her more than she had expected. ‘I’ll take you to the hospital! Quick, let’s get in the car!’ Castor wailed. Lilly shook her head, thinking of being crammed into Castor’s red Ferrari. ‘No, I’d rather the Doctor came here’ she said. She had already decided that she wanted a home birth. ‘Here?’ Castor asked in amazement. ‘Yes’ she groaned, her contractions took over her. ‘I told you already—I have doctor here already’ she explained. Castor had heard her, but he hadn’t imagined she wouldn’t want to go to the hospital, but he didn’t want to argue with her now. ‘Alright’ he settled next to her on the couch kneeling, holding her hand as tightly as he could. She handed him her phone and he called. It had all overtaken him, a doctor, two nurses and a midwife had arrived less than 20 minutes later. Lilly waited calmly in the bath as Castor paced the bathroom anxiously. He had tried calling his Dad over and over but it was late in California and he wasn’t answering. Lilly sat in the bath until the Doctor edged out to tell Castor she was ready. He felt pale and dizzy in disbelief—he couldn’t look, he couldn’t think, all he could hear were her echoing screams in the bathroom, until a short crying yelp of his son’s first breath had joined in. The midwife wrapped the baby boy tightly in a warm gray blanket and passed him to Castor. His eyes ran wet at the sight of his son: his angelic face, his small delicate features, his bright blue eyes that flicked open to greet his father and the hazardous mop of blonde hair that characterised all the Hetfield boys. Castor laughed: his own son had the cowlick he had himself that he had always hated. The nurses had helped Lilly to the bedroom and Castor joined her with their son, carrying him preciously. She relaxed calmly as the doctor observed her for an hour longer. ‘See—isn’t this better than being in a hospital?’ she smiled. They both appreciated the calm of being at home. Castor nodded, Lilly had let him hold his son on his own for the past hour, she was exhausted. ‘Do you want to hold him now?’ Castor smiled. She nodded, sitting up, beginning to recover from her ordeal. She took her son into her arms with a gulp, her eyes ran tears too and she shared her first loving glance of her son with Castor. He kissed his fiancé, he was so proud of her—so proud of his new family. It might’ve all happened quickly, but he was pleased now that it had. ‘He waited for you to come home!' she grinned. 'I was born at home too’ she explained to Castor with a smile. He was still utterly shell-shocked and could barely speak. Now that the Doctor had left, their midwife stayed on with them and their new baby through the night. It was already 5am. Castor saw the rising sunlight peeking through the curtains. ‘How about Neil James Hetfield?’ he breathed in suggestion. ‘I like the name Neil’ Lilly smiled warmly. Castor couldn’t help but kiss his beautiful wife-to-be, over and over; she looked so attractive to him. ‘Are you gonna call your mom?’ Lilly whispered. Castor nodded. ‘Yes, in the morning—I just want this moment for us’ he breathed lovingly as he held Lilly’s body in his arms as she cradled their new born son. |

James had called Castor back at 7am, thinking that his five missed calls at 3am meant that he was now a grandfather. And James was right—he beamed as he heard Castor’s jubilant voice down the phone. ‘He was born at home at 4:02am; 10 pounds 4 ounces’ Castor repeated proudly. ‘We called him Neil James Hetfield’ he told his father. ‘Neil! The first Hetfield born in Texas!’ James cheered. ‘Your blue eyes?’ James asked, ‘Or does he have Lilly’s brown?’ ‘Mine: blue eyes blonde hair and cowlick!’ Castor laughed. ‘A good Hetfield boy!’ James cheered. ‘So when can your mom and I visit?’ James asked eagerly. At the same time he didn’t want to impose on his son. ‘I haven’t called Mom yet—but I will soon’ Castor yawned. ‘I’ve not slept all night’ he admitted. James thought he sensed hesistation in his son’s voice. ‘Your mom will be over the moon, just call her’ James suggested kindly. Castor was quiet. ‘Mom said he wouldn’t be loved by God if we weren’t married when he was born’ Castor gulped. James growled and cleared his throat. ‘Well I don’t believe that’s true’ James said in an annoyed tone. ‘But I’m sure she’ll want to come out and see you too’ James added. ‘Yeah—I said she could stay for a while when the baby arrived’ Castor explained. ‘Alright—well, do you want me to tell her?’ James offered. ‘The jet’s here, we can fly out tonight if you want us there that soon?’ ‘That would be great, Dad—please tell mom for me’ he added nervously. That afternoon James arrived alone in San Rafael after a quick flight. He drove straight back to his former home, he had not yet called his ex-wife to tell her the news, instead he arrived revving the engine noisily down the driveway, parking haphazardly in his own driveway and walking briskly up the steps and opening the door. He stood in the foyer and called out for her. ‘Francesca?’ he half-yelled. ‘Jesus, James you could’ve called!’ she came quickly down the stairs in fright. James thought for a moment that she might’ve had company. He eyed her suspiciously as she folded her arms across her chest. ‘Do you want to go to Dallas?’ James offered. He wanted her to guess why he was here. ‘Dallas? They’ve had the baby!’ her face turned bright in surprise. ‘Let me pack—I’ll go and stay with them for a while!’ she returned back up the stairs leaving James waiting downstairs like a visitor in his own house. ‘Marcella’s not here’ she explained. ‘She’s in Seattle this weekend with…never mind’ she finished. James’ eyebrow raised a little, he couldn’t imagine who Marcella might be with. He let the thought go for now. He wandered into the lounge and sat down on his old brown leather sofa while he waited for her to pack. He looked around, seeing that many of his things were gone, presumably packed. She had rearranged their remaining furniture, his large recliner was no longer in its crown position in front of the tv, her favourite footstool was there instead. The place looked otherwise undisturbed, he supposed she didn’t make much mess on her own with only Marcella. James wondered again about his youngest daughter—he knew Marcella was learning Italian, was competing in the summer athletics meet, and learning the cello in her last year of school. She had already got early admission to Harvard, but still, she was adding to her extra-curriculars. James gulped, he couldn’t face the thought that she might have a boyfriend. No, he couldn’t even think it, not his little girl. Finally, Francesca ran down the stairs with two large bags packed full. ‘Ready?’ James asked, his voice was casual to her even though he was excited. The flight there was only three hours, and neither of them could relax. They sat opposite each other across a table in the same seats where they had sat many times before as a couple. She had been quiet for a long while before she spoke. ‘You didn’t bring Hannah? she queried bitterly. ‘Chelsea is only a week old’ James explained in a brief voice. She nodded, she didn’t want to talk about his child with another woman. ‘Nice that it’s a girl, then it’s one of each’ she tried to warm the conversation with a meek smile. ‘Castor still wants a brother’ Francesca trailed off. James wondered whether to tell her about Anthony, he had not yet told the kids. ‘Anthony is my son’ James revealed. If he was honest, he wanted to shock her. Her eyes turned suspiciously wide. ‘That’s funny--Hannah told me that he was Ray’s son’ she said indignantly. ‘When?’ James questioned. ‘At Castor’s last match of the season at USC’ she explained. ‘Why did she tell you that?’ James asked in confusion. ‘I asked her if he was your son, she said he wasn’t’ Francesca finished triumphantly. James paused again. ‘Well, he is. I know he is’ he finished, although now he wasn’t so sure. ‘I always thought Anthony was a Hetfield’ Francesca added. ‘He’s not the least bit like Ray’. James agreed. ‘I haven’t told the kids that he’s their brother yet’ James explained. Francesca nodded and looked out the airplane window with a sigh. ‘Why didn’t Castor call me and tell me the baby was here?’ she asked sadly. James thought she had quickly wiped away a tear. ‘He’s terrified you’ll not bless the baby’ he said honestly. ‘I never said that!’ Francesca complained. James wanted to tell her angrily that she had, but instead, he let it go. Finally, they were there, driving from the airport through the suburbs to Castor’s new house, neither of them had yet visited. Even in the darkness of night, James couldn’t help but be impressed by his son’s new home. Francesca apparently didn’t see it at all, she only made for the front door eagerly and made inside to see her son. ‘Castor!’ she called out. James had followed her as she had run up the stairs. On the second floor, she followed the sound of a baby’s cries and found Lilly holding her new grandson—another Hetfield boy, loud and brazen just like Castor had been. ‘Oh Castor! He’s so much like you!’ she cried. Her son got up from Lilly’s bedside to greet his mother. She buried her face into his shoulder proudly, shielding her tears from him. James smiled at Castor as he hugged his mother over her shoulder. He had stood in the doorway, and joined them in the bedroom; his eyes finding the baby boy’s small face in joy. He too, recognised how much his grandson was like Castor had been as a baby. ‘Oh he’s beautiful!’ Francesca cried. Lilly handed her new son to Francesca to hold and she sat beside them both as James joined her. His hand brushed the baby’s small head, just like he had his own baby daughter a week earlier. ‘So he came early!’ Francesca said in surprise. ‘Yes—nearly two whole weeks early!’ Lilly exclaimed. ‘But he looks perfect!’ Francesca smiled happily. ‘I always thought Connor would be a pretty name’ Francesca said blissfully. James’ eyes widened and his face scrunched up in disgust. ‘We’ve named him Neil, Mom’ Castor announced a little firmly. ‘Oh you’ve named him already?’ Francesca’s face was surprised at her son. ‘Yes!’ Castor said indignantly. James made to take his grandson from his ex-wife’s arms and Francesca reluctantly let him up. James held the baby boy, feeling the weight of his small body and feeling triumphant that his son had done so well. He had been success, he had lived to see his grandson born and his own son was now, so very successful. James thought tearfully of his own father for a minute, and then again, of Anthony of missing out on his birth. He felt sadness knowing that his grandson would grow up in Texas where he would seldom see him. But nothing made him prouder to know that another Hetfield boy was now part of the family. His eyes wet with tears in pride. |
