Exactly, and Castor's only 19. Can you imagine a 19 yr old James knowing what to do with a baby?

Yeah, Francesca didn't care that James and Hannah were busy.

Dallas, TX--Castor and Lilly's Ranch.

‘I need to talk to Francesca today’ James admitted thoughtfully, although the fact pained him. He dressed after his morning shower, and pulled on his jeans as we prepared to head downstairs for breakfast.

‘She and I need to talk about what happens with the house back in San Rafael when Marcella leaves for Harvard. Francesca said she’ll move out and I want to sell the place afterwards’ James announced. We’d already discussed it, and I’d suggested he keep the house for his children’s memories, but it seemed he had disagreed.

‘Alright’ I accepted, remembering my dad’s warning from years ago that Francesca would always be in his life. I knew, I warmed my expression and nodded to let him know I understood. I knew they needed to have the tough conversation that lay ahead where they would finally separate amicably.

‘Where are you gonna go to talk? I asked gently.

‘I think we’ll stay here, maybe take a walk outside down to the lake, I don’t want to take her out somewhere like a restaurant and give her the wrong impression’ he explained. I sat on the end of the bed and thought on his words for a minute. He paused to offer me his commitment that was written on his face. I smiled back lovingly, I was so pleased we had reunited after eight years of knowing each other.

‘James, do you think she still wants… something… with you?’ I asked carefully. I couldn’t bring myself to say the word ‘relationship’. He looked up from buckling his heavy brown leather belt in his blue denim jeans.

‘I think she’s past wanting me to come back, but she’s not let go yet either’ he confessed thinking of her creeping into his bed while he slept the last time he had visited Castor here in Texas. It had alarmed him then that she still thought he might sleep with her if she tried. ‘But I need to make that even clearer to her, she’s become depressed Cali tells me’ he explained. I watched him as he pulled on his gray t-shirt over his muscular frame. I nodded, I wanted things to be clear between us and Francesca too. I wasn’t surprised to hear she was ill, she was living mostly alone with just Marcella in their large family home.

‘It’s alright, I promise’ he stepped forward to take me into a warm hug, holding my concerned face to his chest and kissed my head gently. It didn’t surprise me that Francesca was acting oddly while I was here, I was sure seeing me with James and our new baby was hard for her to process. I spoke my thoughts into his chest.

‘I think she’s let go of you James, but she doesn’t accept us as a couple. She probably never will, since I was the one you cheated on her with’ I said pensively. James nodded, agreeing wordlessly. He checked his watch.

‘I should get on with this then’ he declared solemnly ‘she knows we need to talk too’.

James and Francesca departed for a walk outside after breakfast. I sat watching them protectively in Castor’s lounge that overlooked the fields beyond and down to the lake that bordered his property with a State Forest. I watched James take long slow strides as he spoke with his ex-wife through the tall amber grass. The Texas air was hot and dry at this time of year. I bounced Chelsea on my knee checking James and Francesca’s figures in the distance until their outlines sunk over the hill and were obscured from sight. Marcella sat with us, a book in her hands watching me watching her parents with a sigh.

‘Mom will be okay’ Marcella said quietly. I turned to her with a smile. Marcella was the only one who still lived at home with her now. ‘She just needs to move on’ she observed.

‘It’s a very hard thing to do, especially when James is still a father to the three of you’ I observed kindly. Marcella nodded, accepting my wisdom as fact.

‘So Anthony is our half-brother?’ she smiled. It seemed Castor had passed on the news.

‘Yes, he is honey’ I smiled. Marcella nodded happily now, but I knew that many years ago the thought had hurt her very much.

‘Four years ago, when I saw pictures of you and Anthony with Dad I was so relieved when I first found out that he was Ray’s son, but now that I know he is my brother, it’s better this way’ she smiled. ‘We’re connected to the new phase in Dad’s life. If we weren’t related to Anthony and Chelsea it would be weird’ she explained. I nodded, I understood what she meant.
Anthony stood from the floor where he played to climb onto the couch next to his older sister. Marcella smiled at his growing expression.

‘I wish Cali was here, she hasn’t met Neil yet’ she sighed. ‘She’s falling out with Dad a bit’ she admitted. Cali’s distance from us this past year hadn’t surprised me, she was the oldest turning 21 next year, and had begun her own life away from home. ‘I think Cali wants not to be a Hetfield the most’ Marcella admitted out loud. Her confession surprised me, but I knew his kids had found the family’s fame difficult to grow up with.

‘Do you feel that too?’ I asked carefully. Marcella looked sad to admit it.

‘Only sometimes, when people recognise me or only talk to me because of Metallica’ she sighed.

‘Don’t feel bad, that’s easy to understand’ I smiled kindly. It made a little more sense to me now why Cali had put distance between her and her father this past year. She hesitated her next statement with a breath, but continued with a grin.

‘I met this guy, Marco, and he doesn’t know a thing about Metallica!’ she grinned happily. She had switched into a bright, gossiping energy. ‘He’s Italian-American and lives in Seattle, I’ve been back to visit him a few times after we met at science camp’ she said quickly. Her 17 year old face had taken on a dreamy expression. I remembered that she had been away from home and not flown to Texas with James and Francesca when Neil had first been born.

‘I haven’t told Dad yet’ she added quickly, begging me to keep quiet. ‘He’s my first boyfriend, I think he’d flip out!’ she said dramatically. I grinned back, I was enjoying my unexpected heart-to-heart with Marcella. I remembered how upset James had been years ago when Cali had lost her virginity to her first serious boyfriend. And now, although my mind was half set on James and Francesca’s conversation about our families' future, I wondered about Marcella and whether she needed her father’s guidance now more than ever.

James and Francesca had talked carefully without either raising their voices as they took slow thoughtful strides through the grassy field. They descended the steep hill to the lake and sat together on the stony edge. Francesca sobbed quietly as James spoke as calmly as he could, relaying his thoughts about selling their marital home next fall. He hated that his words hurt her and when he made her cry. He couldn’t help but reach out and smooth her back gently in consolidation with his warm hand. She let her crying face roll to his shoulder and his chin rested on the top of her head.

‘So what do you think you’ll do when you move out? Do you have any ideas?’ James prompted her to think about her future without him.

‘I don’t know yet’ she admitted. ‘I could stay in the Bay Area or I could go back to Colorado, I’m not sure. I’ll have to see’ she mumbled sadly.

‘You could stay in the Bay still, Cali isn’t far away at Stanford’ James reminded her kindly, but apparently she didn’t need reminding, and her eyes splashed tears again.

‘I used to have all four of you at home, and now very soon I’ll be alone!’ she cried in amazement. James thought he had struck the reason for her depression.

‘Is there anything I can do?’ he asked feebly, knowing full well their empty home was mostly his fault.

‘Moving somewhere smaller will help’ she admitted.

‘When you can, try and meet people, try to move on’ James suggested honestly although he realised only five months after he had left it was hardly helpful to say so. He realised now more than ever that he had been a jerk, not coming home for nearly eight months before admitting he was back with Hannah. They had not remarried or managed to rekindle their relationship, but still she felt as though she had dibs on him. They weren’t even sleeping together, and he hadn’t slept in the same bed as her under their same roof for some time. In his mind, he was a free agent he was just ashamed to admit he was leaving her and they would be split all over again.

‘When are you going to get the rest of your stuff?’ she asked, turning over a small blue pebble and admiring it’s smooth cold exterior in her hand. A lot of his guitars, clothes and favourite pieces of furniture were still in their house.

‘Whenever you’re happy for me to go back and get it’ he said amicably, although really, he had been putting it off.

‘I’ve been thinking…’ Francesca began taking a deep breath and turning to face James. She stood to brush the silt from her trousers from sitting on the sandy stones. ‘I don’t need all the money that I got from the divorce, I want the kids to have it. I want Cali to live somewhere nice next year when she moves off-campus, and I want Marcella to have a place in Boston later on too so she doesn’t feel so far from home on the East coast’ Francesca admitted. James nodded, he hadn’t thought of that.

‘So I want to give you back the $340 million I got’ Francesca explained. ‘I only want enough to find a new place and live, the rest is yours and for the kids, James’ she explained. At first he cleared his throat angrily, he was insulted that she didn’t want his money, but then he realised it was his money that was making her feel this way, that was stopping her from letting go.

‘I don’t want you struggling, not able to live or start a new life’ James insisted. ‘I’ll leave you at least $8 million’ he assured her, but Francesca shook her head.

‘No James, I mean it’ she said again throwing the stone from her hand into the lake. James watched it make a resounding plopping sound in the distance. He stood to try his hand at throwing another. He found he enjoyed it, it was cathartic to throw stones while they argued.

‘Are you finally going to marry Hannah?’ she asked angrily. Now that she was getting her negative energy out she let her voice display her chagrin.

‘Chelsea’s only a month old, one step at a time’ James replied evasively.

‘You and I, we’re too old to take things slowly’ Francesca pointed out morosely. ‘Just marry her. You see James, I see now the mistake I made ten years ago in staying with you when you started cheating. I knew you were unhappy, I knew things weren’t going well for us, but I was more afraid of starting over than of losing you and getting divorced. Isn’t that silly?’ she asked them both out loud rhetorically in exasperation.

‘I should’ve let it go! I should’ve let you go then!’ she yelled as tears streamed down her face. She threw an especially large rock into the water and it made a large splash that wet them both. James let her yell, he knew she needed to get things out. She stopped to wipe her eyes on her sleeve with a deep sob.

James rested his hands on both her shoulders and let her cry for a few minutes more, before letting her turn and face her body into his chest where he held her tightly for a long while. She lifted her face to see his soft blue eyes closely for the last time. He blinked, holding back his own tears, knowing too that this would be the end. After this, to their adult children they would only be parents living apart. They would never again live under the same roof. She tried desperately for one last kiss, but James turned his lips away from hers in rejection. Reading his reluctance for a warm conclusion, she broke from his arms and made her way across the stones, back up the hill the long way to the house through the tall golden grass. James watched her blonde hair shine in the sun as she walked away, blending in with the landscape that framed her, and that had for so long, framed them.

Well.....I'm glad Fran and James are putting their past behind them and moving on. I really want to see Hannah and James move on together but I want Fran to be happy too. I just hope thats how you've planned it :biggrin

I hope Castor has learned his lesson in the whole cheating thing. He needs to open his eyes and live from his father's mistakes. I'm not looking forward to James' reaction to Marcella having a boyfriend. I don't think this will end well.

Can't wait for more!!!

More today! Including a father/daughter meltdown. Poor Marcella, you're right, James isn't gonna take it well.

I think once their old house is sold and Francesca has moved on things will be in the clear at last for James and Hannah.

Well, I'm glad things will be clear for at least them. I have been wondering if Fran and Ray will hook up? I know you won't reveal anything which is good LOL, but I wonder if they will? And I wonder how this will affect James if it affects him at all?

Can't wait to see James' reaction to Marcella having a boytoy :biggrin

Castor has told his dad that Ray calls Francesca a lot which surprised him. :wink And you're right, I won't tell you, but the answer is coming up real soon!
