Two days until Christmas, we readied the house for our first Christmas at home. I knew that James had hoped he might see his children himself, that they might’ve visited us here, but Francesca had taken up Castor’s home as hers for now. It infuriated James, he still held her accountable for not feeling he could spend more time with his grandson. He loved his new young family, but still, he lamented his eldest three children growing up and leaving home. It had been a harder transition to make than he expected. And still on a daily basis, he thought about having a drink. Thankfully, there wasn’t any alcohol in the house, no mini-bars or private waiters to tempt him, and it was more a matter of shaking the thought rather than avoiding the fridge. He had taken to untangling a large box of Christmas lights as he wrestled with his thoughts. I hung decorations on the tree with Anthony. ‘Fuck!’ he swore, throwing the piled mess of green cords to the ground. I looked up from hanging decorations with a knowing grin. I’d given him the worst task. ‘They’re new and they’re still fucking tangled as shit!’ he moaned. ‘Do we really need Christmas lights?’ he muttered. He paused, his eyes splashing fast tears. I noticed in surprise and joined him to smooth his back kindly. His mind remembered Francesca’s way of twirling the Christmas lights around their bannister back home. She’d done the same in Argentina, he loved coming home to them—it was what made Christmas for him. There was some childhood essence left in him that longed for it, but it lacked the surprise when he had to do it himself. Francesca had a way of keeping them from tangling and he wished he knew how she did it. ‘Don’t worry about it, we’ll untangle them later’ I suggested. When he looked up, I saw his face had cleared of tears. ‘Sorry Hannah, I just think I’m tired’ he excused. I nodded, Christmas had a way of doing it to the best of us. ‘I can get Dad to help, if you want to sleep or take a walk or something?’ I suggested. I was beginning to wonder if this was more than tour lag, if this wasn’t him becoming depressed. ‘That’s a good idea, I’ll go for a walk’ he nodded. I watched him take his phone with him as he took leave down the steps of our garden to the beachfront. He strolled along the wet sand leaving slow, pensive footprints, wading a short distance into the breaking waves. He spent nearly an hour on the phone as I observed him from the tall glass balcony. Twice now, I had wondered about calling Lars to tell him my concerns, but I didn’t know what it would achieve, whether it would help my husband. I knew he hadn’t been drinking, his eyes and mind seemed clear to me. But still, Castor and his new grandson Neil worried him to the point of failure. When he returned inside to the bedroom, it was dark. He looped his arms around me, standing behind me as I washed my face in the bathroom mirror. He nuzzled my neck with his warm lips and I smiled back at him in the mirror’s reflection. ‘Talk to Castor?’ I asked. I turned to face him and his hands settled around my waist. ‘Yeah’ he nodded. ‘Gonna go and visit for New Years, that sound okay?’ I smiled, I knew it was exactly what James wanted. ‘Francesca’s gonna be there still’ he explained with a gulp. I sighed a little, it was so tense being around her in the same house. ‘I suppose we just treat her as family. Get on with it. You need to see your grandson and Castor needs you’ I reminded James. He knew, he nodded. I tidied his messy windswept hair with my fingers. He leaned in and kissed my throat lovingly. ‘Darling are you in the mood tonight?’ he asked, his voice making a low teasing groan. I nodded, holding his face in both hands as he kissed me. His hands smoothed down my body, curling my thighs around his middle. He lifted me onto the bathroom vanity behind us. ‘I have an idea!’ he whispered. His head turned to see Chelsea lying awake in her cot beside our bed. I knew he didn’t want our daughter to see. ‘Here?’ he asked eagerly. ‘Yeah, sure!’ I grinned, wrapping my arms around his neck. As soon as I had given him permission, his body switched into a frenzy to undress me. He lifted my singlet over my head, breathing eagerly to see my nude chest. I helped slide his cotton shorts down his legs and he curled my thighs around his hips. He held me tight to his body on the edge of the vanity, and tugged his cock in my warm hand for a minute, watching his face crease in pleasure to my touch. He took his cock from my hand, pausing to push carefully into me. I let out a happy gasp as his chin slipped over my shoulder. I held his broad back feeling his muscles clench tight as he slid in and out of me. His voice started a fast pattern of short moans as I breathed hard into his ear. He caught himself short, calling out in a heady burst. He had come already in under a minute. ‘Oh shit!’ he gasped happily. He withdrew, holding himself in surprise, using his hand for friction to conjure the last of it. ‘Sorry!’ he apologised with a satisfied laugh. I shook my head happily, I didn’t mind at all. ‘That was great!’ he kissed, thanking me with a greedy smile. |

Our first Christmas day today as a family of four was utterly surreal. James had woken with a festive cheer that I had not witnessed from him before. He was as jubilant as I had ever seen him, invigorated by his children and their happiness as Anthony ripped open his presents happily. Chelsea was still too young to understand, but still, James showered her in gifts as though she did. We sat on the lounge floor in Christmas morning, as James paused to lift a large gold box from underneath the tree. He smiled at me nervously, his face breaking a wide grin as he handed it to me. He kissed me softly as he did. ‘Merry Christmas, Hannah’ he whispered. We both turned to see Anthony’s ecstatic face as he tore open toy after toy. I tugged the gold ribbon loose from a large ornamental bow and lifted the lid on the box. Inside, a pair of white leather Louboutin heels with a trademark red sole looked back at me. I gasped in astonishment lifting the left shoe from the box and placing it on my flattened hand like an ornament. ‘James! They’re beauuutiful!’ I breathed. He looked pleased with himself, he flattered my smile with an even larger grin. ‘For the wedding?’ he suggested. I nodded, although I hadn’t yet thought what to wear. James’ iphone rang in his pocket and he answered warmly. ‘Hello Marcella, Merry Christmas!’ he began. ‘I have all of your gifts here, I’ll bring them with me when we visit next week for the new year’ he promised. He paused as Marcella handed the phone to her older sister. ‘Hello Cali!’ he smiled warmly, but he had changed his tone of voice. He was more reflective with his oldest daughter. James listened to her voice, smiling pensively. ‘And how’s your nephew?’ James grinned, knowing it was the first time since the fall semester that Cali had travelled to Texas to meet Neil. ‘He’s adorable!’ he heard her say down the line. She handed the phone to her brother and James changed his voice again. ‘Hey Castor!’ he said brightly, his voice was strong and masculine with his son. ‘Dad! Lilly got me a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon!’ he relayed excitedly. ‘Wow!’ James remarked in his fatherly tone. ‘How is she?’ James asked. I heard part of Castor’s voice in reply down the line, James nodded, replying in between Castor’s explanation. ‘Wanna talk to Mom?’ Castor asked. ‘Err, alright’ James agreed, his voice was weaker and lacked his earlier enthusiasm. ‘Merry Christmas James’ Francesca started. ‘You too’ he replied flatly. I couldn’t hear Francesca’s voice at all down the line. I pieced the conversation together from James’ replies. ‘Yes, we’re all coming. Be there on the 29th’ James explained. He paused for a long while, pretending to listen to his ex-wife. Their discussion was one-way as she talked long and fast at him. He rolled in eyes in apology. ‘Let’s talk about the wedding plan stuff when we get there, okay?’ he finished. I made a small laugh as I held Chelsea in my arms. He hung up from his call with an exasperated look on his face. ‘It’s sounds a little chaotic over there. She’s organising a royal wedding’ James joked, although I suspected that really it was not far from it. ‘Let her, if it makes her happy’ I said. ‘I’m not big on ceremonies’ James grumbled. I knew, our own wedding had been simple and private, the complete opposite to Castor and Lilly’s planned event. ‘But we’re having a big New Year’s Eve party at Castor's—his team mates are coming!’ James laughed. I couldn’t imagine it. I stood and opened the doors to the balcony. The cool sea air from the beach blew straight in. ‘How cold is it out, shall we take a walk along the beach?’ James suggested. ‘It’s alright, not too bad’ I smiled. He stood behind me, wrapping his strong arms around my middle. He spoke into my ear in a whisper. ‘Don’t let me forget, I have another present for you….but not until tonight…’ he teased. I turned to face him, trying to read the naughty appeal in his eyes. ‘Tell me!’ I kissed, hoping to squeeze it from him. ‘Later!’ he withheld, turning to leave, patting my bottom with his warm hand. |
