PART FOUR.

I was suddenly glad I was still holding James' hand right then, for Rob pointed out something that should have been glaringly obvious, particularly to me ....

"WHERE'S KIRK!!!!" I yelled into the sudden shocked silence. "WHAT THE BLOODY HELL'S HAPPENED TO KIRK???????"

"He's gone, Shannyn ... !!!" Lars said quietly, large green eyes turned even larger in his obvious horror.

"Yes, thank you, Lars, I can see that, but where has he gone?" I asked, nearly reaching out to shake the drummer in my sudden agitation.

Lars only shook his head at me, but didn't say anything more.

"I am sure he could not have gone far, madam ... not in such a short time .. " John the butler intoned dramatically into the silence. "Maybe we should split up and search for him ... "

"Good idea!" James said, looking down on me with worried eyes, as though he was looking to me for permission.

I nodded curtly, too agitated at that moment to do any more than that at the moment.

It was decided between us that we split up - Lars with John, Rob with me, while James offered to search alone. The candles were distributed, and we split, heading deeper into the darkened house.

Rob stuck close to me, as I trooped diligently through the darkened and spooky corridors, hearing the storm still raging outside, rain lashing against every window we passed, with lightning adding extra, albeit brief illumination, to the meager candle light I held.

"D'you think we'll find him, Shannyn?" Rob asked me, in a quiet aside, as we trooped down another corrdior that looked spookily similar to the one we'd just left.

If we weren't careful, we'd be the ones who were lost, as well as Kirk.

"For my sake I hope so, Rob!" I said, grimly. "You guys are my responsibility, after all. It's my job to look after you, all of you ... "

My voice trailed off amidst the crack of thunder that boomed overhead but Rob still picked up on my hesitancy anyway.

"There's more to it than just your job, isn't there? I bet if it was, say, me or James, or Lars, you wouldn't be half so worried..." he asked me, and I could hear the smile in his voice, even though I couldn't see it properly on his face, in the guttering light of the candle's flame.

I didn't answer him, because despite the teeming rain and the thunder anfd the sounds of my own heart beating painfully loud in ny ears out of sheer fright, I had heard a noise behind us, that Rob obviously hadn't picked up on.

"Holy flying monkey crap,m Rob, but did you just hear that?" I asked him, turning round too sharply, almost blowing the candle out with the force of my own movement.

"Shannyn, honestly, I really expected better of you - you're a grown woman!!! There's no need to try and distract me just because you're too embarrassed to admit you like Kirk in more than just the professional ... " Rob chattered, sounding like he was really enjoying himself now.

"ROB!! SHUT UP!!!! For someone who was so scared just a few moments ago, you're sure making uop for it now!!!" I hissed. "There's somebody behind us!!! I heard footsteps .... !!!"

"Maybe it's Kirk!! Hey, Kirk!!! KIRK-Y!!!!!! We know it's you, dude!!!" Rob yelled into the silence.

"ROB!! Will you pipe down, dammit!! Unless Kirk has suddenly grown four feet and scuttles when he walks, then I don't think that's him ... !!!" I hissed, clapping a hand over Rob's mouth in an attempt to get him to quieten down.

His eyes grew wide as he heard the noises too. He nodded at me to show me he wasn't about to start screaming his head off again, and I withdrew my hand, and true to his word, or rather nod, he didn't speak in a voice louder than a whisper.

"What d'you think it is?? A rat? Wouldn't surprise me if this place did have rats. Goddamn place seems to have everything else ... !" he hissed at me.

"It sounded bigger than a damn rat, Rob..." I said, uncertainly, trying to peer into the darkness, but failing to see much beyonfd the weak light given off by the candle.

"Maybe we should just carry on searching, Shannyn! That thing hasn't hurt us yet, and I doubt it will make a move now. Maybe it is just curious as to what we are ... " he said to me.

I didn't like the thought of that thing - whatever it was - still following us, if we didn't what it was or it's intentions towards us, but what Rob had said made some sort of sense. It hadn't made a move towards us yet, so there was a good chance we might be safe from it.

I nodded, but didn't say much, other than - "Come on. We have a guitarist to find ... "

I moved off then, Rob a comforting presence beside me as we travelled deeper into the house, not knowing if where we were headed would even lead us to where Kirk had gotten to. If we didn't find him, I only hoped one of the others would.

I had a very bad feeling about this situation indeed, and my concerns for Kirk were only half of it. I had a feeling that something bad was afoot, and Kirk's disppearance was only the beginning of it for us.

In time, we came to the end of the corridor, with another corridor stretchig out in both directions either side of us. I had no idea which way would be best to go, swivelling my candle from left to right while I tried to decide. Either way was a slikely as the other ...

"Rob, which way d'you think is best?" I hissed to the bassist.

I didn't get an answer.

"Rob?" I asked, angling the candle to the place where I knw he'd last been bside me.

Rob was no longer there, nor was he behind me ...

Rob, like Kirk before him, had disappeared, leab=ving me clue as to his whereabouts either, leavin me all alone in an unfamiliar house, seperated from everyone else, with no way of alerting them should anything go wrong.

And there was that thing still out there in the darkness, moving closer .... closer ... closer still, and I still had no idea as to what it was or what it wanted .....

Thank you guys - I'm glad you're still enjoying this .. I would apologize for all the cliffhangers I keep leaving you with, but I can't, because I'M EVIL, I TELL YOU, EVIL!!!!! I can't help it!!!

Anyway, here be the next part ....

PART (um) FIVE

"HELLO? WHO'S THERE?" I shrieked into the darkness.

There was no answer, merely the sounds of the storm still raging outside. My breath came in ragged gasps, wheezing into the silence inside the corridor, as I waved the candle further and further into the darkness, trying to see what it was that was there with me.

"ROB? That better be you there, Rob!!!" I howled. "Kirk? JAMES!!!!!!! Lars, where are ya? SOMEBODY? ANYBODY?"

It seemed as though I was all alone in the corridor, all alone in the world or so it seemed right then, even more so a few seconds later when a freak gust of wind snakied through the air, brushing my cheek and snuffing the candle as though it had never been alight.

"JESUS CHRIST!!! WHO DID THAT?" I yelled, heart pounding in my chest at the thought of being trapped in a dark place with an unknown ... thing ... out there, that may or may not mean me harm ....

I felt something soft and furry brush against my leg and I flinched back with a scream of horror as hot breath huffed onto my hand, and a wet nose brushed my fingers.

I backed away from the thing, but I had a feeling that it had already gone, passed on its way as though no longer interested in me ...

I bumped into something soft and far taller than me, and I screamed loudly into the silence, until strong hands took hold of my arms and a familiar voice quietened me down.

"Shannyn, it's me!! What are you doing here screaming your head off in the dark? What's happened? Where's the others?" came the voice that I recognized despite my terror as belonging to -

"Kirk? Thank God!!! Where were you?? We were looking for you!!!" I said, all but throwing my arms around him in the darkness.

I felt one arm going round me, as Kirk cleared his throat.

"I stumbled in the darkness, and fell through what felt like a trap door in the wall. I got lost and ended up here to find you screaming here alone in the dark!! What happened?" Kirk asked again, and I flinched away at the sudden brightness of Kirk's lighter flaring near to my face.

He gave me a quick smile of apology, all dimples in the guttering light as he relit the candle I had managed to keep a hold of by some miracle.

"There was something here ... with me ... something furry. I felt it brush my leg. I didn't get a good look at it - the candle had already gone out by then...and I didn't imagine it, before you say anything ... I felt it's breath on my hand, felt it's cold wet nose ... " I said, before shuddering in disgust at the memory.

Kirk looked down on me, looking more concerned than disbelieving right then.

"I don't doubt you felt something, Shannyn, but where are the others? WHy aren't they here with you?" he asked. "Someone should be here with you!"

"Rob was ... but he's gone!! He disappeared ... " I told him, looking up at Kirk in the weak light. "Just like you did ... !!"

"KIRK!! Thank God!! Shannyn, where did you find him? We've been looking all over for the pair of you!" came James' voice, from down the corridor as several pairs of heavy footsteps thundered through the darkness towards us.

James had brough flashlights, along with John the butler and Lars. All were looking quite concerned, but they didn't have Rob with them.

"Hang on ... there's just the two of you? Where's focking Rob, heh?" Lars asked, suspiciously.

"Gone ... dunno where ... !" I told him, feeling guilty because I was the one who was supposed to know, being with him at the time.

"We'd best go search for him. And no, we're not splitting up this time. Can't have no more strange disppaearances in the dark ... " James muttered darkly.

As we searched for the missing Rob, Kirk explained once again where he'd been, but I couldn't help but notice something he kept doing as he was talking.

He kept sniffing, something that Kirk was not in the habit of doing ordinarily, and I noticed he was not just sniffing aimlessly.

Once I got the chance to say something to him in a quiet aside, I did so, saying to him - "Kirk, may I ask you something?"

"Yes, of course, Shannyn. You can ask anything you want of me!" he said, looking down with the faintest glimmer of amusement in his deep brown eyes.

"Kirk, why do you keep sniffing me? You've been doing it a lot since you came back from being lost, and I certainly haven't noticed you doing that before ... "

My voice trailed off as I realized how ridiculous that sounded, but Kirk thankfully didn't laugh.

"Your perfume, Shannyn. I just thought it smelt nice. I haven't noticed you wearing it before ... " he said, softly.

"My ... what, Kirk? I haven't put any on in a week!!!" I told him, in genuine surprise.

Kirk looked down on me then, genuine confusion on his face, but he didn't get the chance to reply, for Lars was yelling furhter down the corridor at us.

"GUYS!!! COME QUICKLY!!! I FOUND ROB!!! AND HE NEEDS HELP!!!" he was yelling, fear in his voice ......

dun - dun - DUNNNNN!!!!

Another cliff hanger there!!!!

What's hapened to Rob?

And why does Kirk keep sniffing Shannyn??

What's going to happen next???

There's only one way to find out!!!!

Stay Tuned!!!!

PART SIX!!!

"Rob? Talk to me Rob? What happened??" I asked, leaning over the bassist with great concern, as I slapped his face gently in an attempt to bring the barely conscious man around.

"Mom?" Rob asked, staring blearily up at me.

"No, Rob, I ain't your momma, I'm Shannyn!! Can you tell me what happened?" I asked him.

"Shannyn? I was saving your ass, that's what I was doing!!!!" Rob told me, suddenly becoming more animated as full realization suddenly settled in.

"What do you mean? Saving my - from what?" I asked, looking up into James' face, as he knelt down beside me.

I couldn't mistake the obvious alarm, concern and fear on the vocalist's face, emotions which ran deep in me. The bassist on the floor looked to be in pretty bad shape - he had wounds running deep into his side, which still were bleeding out now as we talked, and I didn't want the guy to die.

"Not on my watch you're not, sonny," I muttered to myself, before I even realized I was going to speak aloud.

"What was that?" James asked me, leaning in close to me, to catch what I'd said.

"Nothing James. Just muttering indiscriminately," I said to him, before clearing my throat and addressing Rob again.

"Rob, sweetheart, what happened? Why did you save my ass? I mean, how ... !!!" I asked Rob. "And please don't try and get up ... I don't think you can take it!!"

This last said as Rob struggled in his attempt to sit, but James and Lars pushed him back down gently.

"There was something there, Shannyn. I was drawing it off, distracting it from you, because he wanted to harm you, or so I thought. I didn't think it would work so successfully ... It was a thing ... a large thing ... something like a large wolf or a small bear ... " and Rob coughed weakly. "I'm not gonna die, am I?"

"Not on Shannyn's watch, you ain't!!" Kirk suddenly spoke from somewhere behind us.

I turned and in the weak and guttering lights of the candles surrounding us like so many fireflies on the ground, and took in the sight of Kirk leaning casually against the far wall, looking as though he didn't have a care in the world, but I could see right through him. I always could. He was struggling with something deep within him - I could always read him a lot easier than the others could, which baffled everyone else to the point of exclusion at times. I always called Kirk my open book but right now, I found it hard to read him. He'd changed indefineably and I found that change to be nore appealing somehow.

Which left me no choice but to ask - "How the hell could you have heard what I said when you're all the way over there, Kirk? When James couldn't even hear and he's sitting right next to me?"

Kirk merely shrugged, and said nothing.

"Kirk?? That Kirk there? You found him?" Rob asked.

"Rather he found me ... !" I said, slowly.

Something was wrong, but I just didn't know what yet. I filed the confusing emotions away in the back of my mind, ready to be analyzed when I had more time and brainpower to deal with it.

There was something about Kirk ....

"If you'll let me get into Master Rob, please, Madam, I shall tend to him," came John's sonorous voice from the shadows.

"Take good care of him, won't you, John," I said, sternly.

"Of course, madam. Why should I not? It is not as if I have not had enough practice!" John told me, calmly and without the trace of sarcasm his words might have implied.

Uhhh. Not something else I couldn't explain.

I decided to keep my mouth shut until after John had tended to Rob, because Rob was more important right now than some half baked questions over what exactly John had meant.

I went to stand by Kirk, irrevocably drawn to his side once again, when all others, I noticed did not. Lars looked distinctly uneasy now in Kirk's presence, as though he picked up the shift in Kirk's presence too. Only James looked oblivious to it, yet still he stood with Lars, watching over Rob like some guardian angel. The sight made me smile. These guys really were like a band of brothers. I only hoped that I could be counted as a surrogate sister to them.

I felt rather than saw Kirk watching me in the darkness but he said nothing. Neither did I, as I felt there was nothing to say while Rob was in trouble. I found the attention flattering but somewhat distracting also.

"There. All patched up and ready to go. I suggest you go rest until dinner, Master Rob. By then, I have a feeling you will feel greatly improved," and the butler chuckled almost ominously in a way I didn't like.

Lars must have also picked up on this, for he asked - "Say, butler dude, how comes you know so much about medical stuff, huh? Amd what aen't you telling us about Rob's state?"

"I used to be in the medical corps in the British Army, sir. I saw plenty of war wounds on the field. And I assure you I know as much as you do about Master Rob's state!" John told him.

The statement itself sounded plausible enough but it seemed loaded with too many possibilities and implications for my liking.

It seemed as if Lars was prepared to accept that - either because he truly believed it, or because he couldn't be bothered to pursue the issue.

"Now, if you please, I would advise you go back to your rooms, just until dinner time, upon which I shall call you. Try tp get some rest until then, by which time Master Jake should be back from running his little errand!" John told us, sounding smug in the gloom.

Jake!!!

In all the excitement, I had all but forgotten the record producer and the reason as to why we were even here in this mansion.

Kirk must have picked up on the sudden tension coursing through me, for he leant into me and said - "You'd forgotten the real reason we were even here, didn;t you?"

"Yes. Some P.A. I am!!!" I murmured back to him.

Kirk huffed out a surprised laugh at that before leaning away, and I missed his warnth in the suddenly too chill air of the mansion.

"Best do as John says, guys. Get some shut eye for a time, if you can. I need you rested for tomorrow," Lars said in a quiet aside to us on the way past to where John was presumably showing him his room.

"Don't worry, James will stay with Rob," Kirk said, pre-empting my next question, mere seconds before James sad - "Don't worry, I'll stay with Rob til then! Come on, big fella, let's get ya settled!"

James helped Rob get to his feet carefully, helping the slihghtly smaller bassist along the corridor.

I exchanged a look with Kirk and as one, we fell into step behind James and Rob. Neither of us said a word, still, but I still had too many questions to ask him.

One of which was - what happened to you, while you were seperated from us, while you were alone, in the dark somewhere ... ????

There seemed more to it than Kirk was saying, and I was determined to find out what it was ....

Little did I know, that all my questions and more would be answered, sooner rather than later ......

dun - dun - DUNNNNN!!!!

And what revelations will Shannyn discover before too long.

And just what is up with Kirk???

Watch this space to find out ....

No longer will you be in suspense, for here is the next part. There will be answers for you, I promise ..... :horns: :wink :horns2

PART SEVEN.

I was the last to be shown to my room, feeling lost at finding myself in such large surroundings. Even the largest hotel room hadn't been so large nor as lavish as this one seemingly was. Not that I could really fully appreciate the grandeur, for I was only getting a small peek at what the room must look like. The candle nor the lightning did it full justice.

All I knew was that I felt ike I was dwarfed by the room, the four poster bed, the almost gothic fireplace across from me, the large balcony doors opening onto the night, the storm, the world outside. I surpressed a shiver for a reason I could not determine, as though I felt like something bad had either happened here, or would happen very soon.

I tried to put the feeling out of my mind, feeling comforted by the thought of Kirk being in the room next door. He'd already made me promise to call for him should I need assistance, although I'd thought at the time of how I really hoped I wouldn't need to. I had the sudden urge just to call for him anyway, but decided just to let him rest. He needed the rest before dinner as much as I did.

I huffed out a laugh at my own school girl fright, wondering why, at 35 years old, I was so frightened of being alone, in unfamiliar surroundings, in the middle of the worst storm of the decade, ij the dark ....

"Shannyn Jackman, STOP IT!!!" I ordered myself. "That's not the way your mother raised you!!!"

I unpacked what belongings I had with me, into the bedside cabinet, reminding myself of all that was still left outside in the car. I would have to wait until dinner to ask John about it. I could not bring myself to leave the room, to wander the halls and corridors alone to find him.

When that was done, I settled down on the bed to read for a while, at least until dinner, now that I had the chance. With my lifestyle as it stood now, I had no time left anymore seemingly just to read....

Before I knew it, I was stirring from a doze, not knowing what had awoken me, just knowing that something had. I hadn't even been aware that I even had been asleep until I'd awoken ....

And then came the sudden feeling that I was being watched, that I was no longer alone in the room, like I'd originally thought I was.

I looked around the room, searching desperately for someone else there with me, not immediately finding anyone ....

And then I did ....

By the balcony doors that I'd noticed upon my entry into the room, stood a figure backlit by bursts of lightning. The darkness obscured the face, but still I knew who it was, by the height, the build, the the length of the curly hair ...

"KIRK!!! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING IN MY ROOM???" I yelled in relief when I saw it was only Kirk.

Not that I'd ever considered him to be "only" Kirk before ....

He didn't say anything, just continued staring across the room at me, watching me ....

"Kirk? You alright??? You're not in trouble or anything are you?" I asked him, sitting up fully, to swing my legs off the side of the bed, but I didn't immediately stand.

Something about Kirk's sudden appearance and the way he was just standing there looking at me, made my legs feel as though they would betray me should I stand.

"Kirk?" I asked again, not liking the way my voice had started to shake.

"Shannyn, shh!!! Do not be afraid!! There is nothing to be afraid of from me ... " Kirk said, in a soft voice.

2I know that, Kirk. You're .... Kirk ...! You wouldn't hurt me, would you????" I asked.

"I'd rather die than let anyone get to you, Shannyn. In fact I have ... " Kirk said.

"WHAT???? What are you talking about, Kirk?? You're not dead!!!" I said, wondering if maybe I was still asleep and dreaming all this.

Kirk remained silent, moving forward in an eerie manner. Something was odd about the way he was moving towards me. It wasn't his normal walk, his easy stride. It was almost as though the guitarist was .... floating .... yes, floating towards me ...

I stared dumbstruck at him, unable to move or to scream or to do absolutely anything at all, as I watched Kirk float closer and closer towards me. He stopped in front of, towering over me as I stared unspeaking, unmoving into his calm face. He reached out with one hand, laying it on my cheek and without thinking, I smiled, leaning into his touch before I knew it.

"Do you trust me, Shannyn?" he asked, softly.

Without thinking, I replied - "With my life, if necessary ... !"

It was surprisingly easy how the words came to my lips, and even more so considering that I truly meant every word ....

"Good .... !" Kirk murmured, before he leant down, to kiss me on the forehead.

I shivered slightly at his touch ... his lips were so cold ....

I had the sudden urge to touch his face, then, and shivered again at the coldness I foud there, a coldness that I could have sworn had not been there when we stood together in the corridor merely an hour beforehand.

"Kirk, you're so cold ... !" I said, in awe, wondering why I wasn't more terrified than I should be.

Perhaps the whole scenario was just too bizarre to take in. Or maybe I was still under the impression I was dreaming.

"Stand up, Shannyn, so that I can look at you better," he said to me, and I obeyed, without even thinking, surprised at how my legs now withstood my weight without a trace of fear.

Of course, Kirk had been standing so close to me when I was sitting, so the act of standing brought me even closer to him, close enough for me to see his eyes.

"OH, JESUS!!! OH JESUS GOD!!!" I burst out with in sudden horror.

His eyes, which once were a shade of deeopest brown, now were a sickly glowing red, catching eerily in the glow of the candle beside me, turning him into some kind of monster ....

"Shhh, Shannyn, it will all be fine ... This won't hurt, I swear ... !!!" he told me, pressing a finger to my lips to quieten any further words I might have for him, or for others ...

When he was sure I was not going to scream for help, he removed his quietening hand, and I stared up into his face, his eyes ...

"What are you?" I asked him, in wonder, as I reached up to touch his face again, this time without the flinch I'd felt before at the coldness.

Now it was his turn to lean into my touch, a slight smile on his lips, ad I saw then exactly what kind of monster Kirk now was.

The guy had fangs. I'd seen fangs when he'd smiled, and I closed my eyes in sudden sadness.

"You're a vampire, aren't you?" I asked him. "You didn't get lost earlier, did you? You were taken .... !"

Kirk's initial silence confirmed what I'd thought. I tried to imagine what it must have been like for him, to be taken against your will into the unknowing and uncaring darkness, to be turned into some kind of monster by some blood sucking lunatic, seperated from the rest of us, who were oblivious to his plight, his real plight ....

As if sensing what I was thinking, he spoke the words I needed to hear ...

"It didn't hurt, not as much as you would think ... !" Kirk told me. "It went ... peacefully ... !"

There was something else, I could tell. My open book was open once again. I could read what Kirk was going to say in his face before he even said it and I wasn't sure what my answer would be, not immediately.

Not until he voiced his question, then I knew ....

"Be with me, Shannyn. Let me turn you ... Be like me, then we can be together forever .... !!!" he said ......

dun - dun - DUUNNNN!!!

What will Shannyn say??

Will she let Kirk turn her into a Vampire, too???

Would YOU??????
