PART SEVENTEEN.

He opened his mouth as though to say more, but a pair of hands appeared out of the red and misty gloom behind him, grabbing him firmly by the shoulders, and dragging him off into the gloom before I could reach out and stop it.

"KIRK!!" I screamed, but he was gone.

I turned to James then, eyes wide, staring, but seeing nothing.

"James we gotta save Kirk!" I said, blinking back to reality with a pained grimace.

"I know, hun, I know. You're the vampire, you track him down!! You can sniff him out, with that nose of yours! I'm afraid I can't smell anything bar the smell of toilets!" James said, trying to give me a humourous smile, but the smile just turned humorless.

It was obvious that I wasn't the only one affected by all of this and I guess it was just plain arrogance or ignorance to think otherwise.

I closed my eyes, trying to trace the voice inside Kirk's head that I always heard now, but I drew a stramnge blank. Wherever Kirk was, his voice was silent.

"Jeez!" I murmured, thinking Kirk, where are you???

There was no answer, and there was no denying the anguish I felt at the silence.

It just felt like someone had come up to me and chewed my leg off before I could prevent them from doing it. I felt powerless, before I started using my nose like James had suggested I do. I closed everything else off, but the sense of smell, seeking out James, first as he was the closest, the Rob - there was no mistaking that distinctive werewolf scent - then Lars - I really ought to tell him to give up the garlic - then .... Kirk!!! i could smell Kirk there, with Rob, with Lars, with whoever held them all captive.

"I found them, James!" I said to James, without opening my eyes.

"You have??? Take me to them!!!" James said, quietly, anxiously.

I didn't need a second bidding, just took him in the general direction of where their scents were coming from. The smell that James had oh so eloquently called the scent of toilets was getting stronger, the further we headed into the underground caverns, mixed in with the scents of rotting fish and eggs.

"Jeez, but this smell is getting really bad!" James said, gagging in the reddened gloom behind me.

"This smell is deafening on the nose for me!!!!" I told him, crinkling my nose against the smell, instead trying to concentrate only on Kirk, Lars and Rob. "Sometimes it's not easy being a vampire!"

"Tell me something, Shannyn! What's it like drinking blood?" James suddenly asked.

"Kinda nice, actually, James! I miss eating chocolate though!" I said, with a sudden smile over my shoulder at the vocalist.

"Chocolate .... Tell me something else ... Have you ever ... you know .... wanted to drink my blood? Or Lars'? Seeing as we're the only humans left out of the five of us?" he asked.

"Yours, yes. Lars, maybe. Yours just smells stronger for some reason ... !" I admitted slowly.

"How close have I come to death tonight?" James said, sounding horrified.

"Close enough several times. And you're walking alongside Death itself ... !" I said, thinking of what I'd like to do to whoever had taken Kirk from me.

"You'll get him back, Shannyn!" James said, quietly, as though he knew where my thoughts were leading.

"I know. I'll make sure of that!" I vowed, in determination.

James didn't say anything more to that, merely followed me in silence, until I motioned for him to stop, at the entrance to yet another cavern. I closed my eyes against the strength of the smell here, and the light itself was an abomination to the eyes, it was so bright. I could hear Rob whimpering somewhere, so painfully, I almost cried. Lars was shouting angrily at someone - to just let them focking go!!! - while there was silence from Kirk. I knew he was still there, because I could smell him stronger here now, a mixture of Old Spice and chocolate and just plain Kirky-ness.

"What the hell is that noise?" James hissed into my ear.

I shook my head at him, before saying, slowly, in confusion - "I don't know ... !"

This new noise was like no other I'd ever heard before, like a kind of roaring and screeching noise, which kind of put me in mind of dozens of voices, all sounding like that little girl from The Exorcist ....

My eyes widened when I heard the unmistakeable sounds of the Hellhounds snarling somewhere in that cavern and I knew that there was at least one thing there that could be influenced to be on my side, should anything go wrong in there. Of course, there really was no question of not going in there ....

And then I heard something else that I recognised ....

A voice that belonged to someone I had met all to recently ...

"Jeez, James, that's .... !!!" I said, turning to James, with wide eyes, meeting James' horrified glare as he too recognised the speaker....

dun - dun - DUNNNN!!!

Who does the voice belong to??

And why do they want Rob, Lars and Kirk so much???

And where is all the noise coming from, and wy does it sound so much like Linda Blair???

What is the meaning behind all of this????

To find out the answers to all of these questions and many more, stay tuned to find out!!!!

PART EIGHTEEN.

"Jeez, James, that's .... !!!" I said, turning to James, with wide eyes, meeting James' horrified glare as he too recognised the speaker....

"That's Jake!!!" James hissed, eyes growing wider in his recognition.

Although I couldn't make out the words in their entirety, over the horrific noise in the cavern beyond, I still heard snatches of conversation, the tone, the timbre of his voice to recognise Jake's distinctive Texas accent. I felt a wave of anger that this man had Kirk there, and Rob and Lars, had taken them from us and for what? We didn't know.

"Can you see what's going on in there?" James asked me urgently, as he tried unsuccessfully to lean round me. Lean out too far and the big fella would be spotted for sure. Being smaller, and more inconspicuous, and swifet on my feet being something more than human, I peered round the corner, to see all that was to be seen.

The first thing I saw was the great gash in the floor, a chasm that seemed to go down further than it should have - a TARDIS of a hole, if you will. It seemed bigger on the inside than the outside. Out of this hole issued the light, that deep red light that seemed of hell itself, the smell presumably also was coming from the hole, as was the noise. Ranged around the edge of the hole, were my new friends the Hellhounds, whose mouths were agape in ready snarls, leering up at Rob and Lars, but were typically ignoring Kirk.

Which led me to examine the states of Lars and Rob next. They were tied, to make shift alters, wearing nthing bar their trousers, gashes on their bodies. I noticed Rob's wounds were worse than Lars' more pronounced and I wondered at that, I really did.

Then I looked for Kirk. He was not with Rob and Lars - he was kept in a seperate place from them, strapped to what looked almost like a damn cross.

"Someone's been watching too much Until It sleeps!!!" I murmured quietly to myself, remembering once again one of Metallica's videos, one of my personal favourites, actually.

I thought once again of he devils on the video, of the goat, of the strange snake-women, which gave me a curious insight as to what might possibly be going on here.

I pulled back instantly when it seemed as though Jake was about to look up and over at us, bumping into James, knocking him a little unsteady on his feet with the force of the collision, and my greater vampiric strength.

"What happened? What did you see?" James asked me curiously, looking down on me, with an uncertain gaze.

2It looks to me like some kind of devil worship, James!" I said, slowly. "I think he - Jake - is trying to open the gates of Hell. Looks like he's almost succeeded. The light and the noise is coming from a huge gash in the ground .... Lars and Rob are laying bleeding on what looks like make shift alters, while Kirk is tied to a cross ... !" I hesitated wondering whether I really should go further.

James immediately picked up on my hesitancy, and asked the inevitable.

"What is it? What else did you see, that you aren't telling me, or don't want to tell me?" he asked. "And don't try to bull-shit me, Shannyn. Now is not the time for that!"

I swallowed, finding it suddenly hard to tell him what else I'd seen, for it could only mean one thing for us.

"There was an empty table there, James. I think that is for you. There was also a vacant cross. I think I am destined to be hung on that cross!" I said, with some difficulty, unable to meet James all too horrified gaze.

"My God ... !" he breathed.

"I don't think God comes into it, James. Quite the opposite, in fact, I'd say!" I said.

"What the hell is all this about? I mean really? Why does he need Lars? Rob? Kirk? Us? Was this all a set up from the beggining, because it sure seems like it to me now, from what you've just said!" Jams said, in undisguised horror.

I couldn't answer him with any coherency, simply because I didn't know. I could only guess, same as he was.

"So what are we going to do, Shannyn?" James asked me, turning to me for once for good ideas.

Usually it was him being the sensible one - the man with the plan, but now it looked as though this time it was up to me to bail us all out of this mess.

"I don't know, James," I said, sadly.

And I didn't - I really didn't.

"You're the supernatural being here, Shannyn! I thought you'd be able to come up with something - this is more your area than mine!"James said.

"James, dude, I'm a vampire, I'm not Batman! I'm a creature of evil - apparently - not a superhero! I don't know what I'm supposed to do here!" I said, feeling woefully short of ideas right then. "I only wish I did!"

"Think of Kirk, Shannyn! He needs you!" James urged, which really didn't help.

I realize that James was trying to spur me onto coming up with a suitable plan of action, but I really couldn't. In fact, James pointing out the obvious urgency of the situation only heightened my sense of uselessness right then. It made me even more aware of just how much was riding on this, on me coming up with a plan of action.

I had to satisfy myself momentarily with another peer around the corner, trying to ee if visuals would help my stalled brain into some kind of an idea warehouse.

Once again, I saw the hole, wider now, the light stronger, the smell stronger, the noises louder. I saw once again, Rob and Lars laying too still for my liking, as was Kirk, which scared me more than all the rest of it did - and that scared me plenty.

Then I took in the sight of the Hellhounds, and that was when the first seeds of an idea started formming in my head. Hellhounds. I could control those, couldn't I? The mistress of the dead could control the guardians of the dead ...

I was so engrossed with staring at the Hellhounds, that I didn't realize my obvious mistake until it was too late ...

dun - dun - DUNNNN!!!

What is Shannyn's obvious mistake?

And what is her idea?

Will she get to put it into action?

Will YOU be there to find out??

Anyway here's the next update!!! Hoping you like this one!!!

PART NINETEEN.

I was so engrossed with staring at the Hellhounds, that I didn't realize my obvious mistake until it was too late ...

A hand I thought initially belonged to James fell on my shoulder, and I half turned to stare into the strange dead eyes of John the butler.

"John - ! What are you doing down here?" I asked him, as James stepped forward, looking uncertain as to whether he should be defending me or not.

"I've been wondering where you are, madam!" John replied, which really was no reply at all. "And you, Master Hetfield! Your assistance is required. Please, come with me!"

"Where are you taking us, exactly?" I asked, pulling backwards, from John's grip, stalling for time for an all too brief moment.

"Do not ask questions of me, Miss Jackman, just come along with me. Your very presence is required, yours more so than Master Hetfield's!" John said, loftily, reaching out to take the much taller vocalist quite firmly by the arm.

"Alright, I'm coming, I'm not a little boy!" James said, with some degree of annoyance.

"To me, you are, sir!" John replied coolly, before walking us calmly out into the main cavern, closer to the gash in the floor.

I couldn't resist peering down into it out of sheer curiosity as we passed, wondering if this really was the gates to Hell, what it really looked like down there.

I got a dizzying sensation of things being much higher than they really were. I saw flames licking constantly at pillars of red rock and I saw shapes down there - figures slinking and darting sround down there, whipping tails as they passed each other. From their throats came the sounds of growls and mutters and moans - the very noises that had been such an assault on the ears for the past ten minutes or so. I looked to James, wondering if he was seeing what I was seeing, but I noticed he was fastidiously looking the other way. Seemingly he had no interest in seeing exactly what was in Hell, or maybe he just could live without the horrors.

I think out of the two of us, he was perhaps the smarter man, but then again, I was a monster on Earth myself.

"Ahh, John, looks like you've finally found the remainder of our party guests for the night!!! Well done!!! This ritual cannot be completed without them!!!" Jake said, sounding pleased once he'd caught sight of us.

He came forward then, to take James from John, who didn't go without a struggle. Even James was not a match for Jake, a much smaller and slighter man than James himself. John kept hold of me, but I wasn't struggling. I thought with my greater strength I could easily break free, but I thought the exercise pointless and devoid of hope. Where could I go once I had broken free? I wasn't sure. I still had an ace up my sleeve with the power I held over the Hellhounds. It was merely a matter of biding my time until the most opportune moment to unleash them on Jake, maybe John.

It didn't seem long before James was tied to the remaining empty alter, alongside Rob and Lars who cast scared eyes over the tall vocalist, who looked just as scared as they were right then.

After ensuring James was secure, Jake came forward to relieve John of my presence, taking me past the feet of Kirk as he hung upon the cross above me. A single tear slid form my eye when I saw how still he was, how silent his mind thoughts were, and I turned to Jake, angrily, saying as I did so - "What have you done to him, you bastard?"

"Merely ensured he didn't give me a problem. He was being a very naughty boy indeed!" Jake told me with a smug smile, which didn't really give me a proper answer at all. "Please don't make me take equal measures with you, my darling!"

I spat at him then, but he didn't even flinch, merely ignored me as though I hadn't even done anything.

"John! Please assist me with the young woman if you will!" Jake called over his shoulder to the butler, who came forward more obediently than a dog would.

John grabbed my other arm, steadying me, as I tried to struggle free, and I resorted to kicking out with both feet, trying to dislodge the pair of them.

"Spirited young lady, isn't she?" John asked, with a smile, even though he was obviously winded, from where my foot had connected with his stomach.

"More spirited than I gave her credit for, indeed!" Jake agreed.

I used the brief exchange between them to call up every last vestige of vampiric strength I had to break free of them, dashing forward in the hopes of trying to free Kirk from where he hung so still, so lifeless on the cross.

I didn't get so far as that, for the next thing I knew, I felt a terrible burning all over me, and I screamed, falling to the ground, and into unconsciousness along the way ....

dun - dun - DUNNN!!

Yup.

Another cliff hanger I'm afraid.

Stay tuned to find out what happens to Shannyn ....

Time for another update, where we find out what happens to poor old Shannyn and the 'Tallica boys!!!

PART TWENTY!!!

:nanner:

I used the brief exchange between them to call up every last vestige of vampiric strength I had to break free of them, dashing forward in the hopes of trying to free Kirk from where he hung so still, so lifeless on the cross.

I didn't get so far as that, for the next thing I knew, I felt a terrible burning all over me, and I screamed, falling to the ground, and into unconsciousness along the way ....

The next thing I knew was coming into full awareness again, but I wasn't sure of how much time had passed since I'd fallen into that dark and cold abyss of unconsciousness. I could still feel that curious burning all over me, and all that I could think of was acid.

"Ah, seems like our little female friend is awake once again. Didn't take you long to recover, my dear," came John's voice from somewhere near my feet. "Seems like you are, indeed stronger than we gave you you credit for. Just what we were looking for in fact!"

I coughed hoarsely, before attempting to speak to the snidy butler.

"What did you throw on me just now? Acid?" I asked him, not likuing the sounds of how scratchy and hoarse my own voice was to my own ears.

It almost didn't sound like me talking, but I knew that it was, due to the fact of how much it actually pained me to talk.

"No, my dear, that was just Holy Water!" John said, patronisingly.

I closed my eyes, letting my head droop forward once again, swallowing against the painful dry throat I had acquired, as full realization slowly filtered back to me.

"Holy Water ... !" I repeated, slowly.

Seemed like at least some of the old myths about vampires were true, then. Holy Water affected me as much as it ever had, say, Count Dracula and the like, and I wondered how badly daylight and crosses affected me. But, then again, I was hanging from a cross, and I did not notice any ill effects. Then again, my back, my wrists and ankles were pressed quite firmly into wood, not metal, like the traditional vampire repellants all seemed to be, so maybe I was saved from the torture of that, at least for now.

I looked to Kirk, then, glad to finally see some signs of life in him at last - a vague sense of movement in one leg, and fluttering of eyelashes as he started to breathe again. Not that he needed to breathe, being technically dead, but, again, it was through sheer force of habit left over from the humanity days, that kept his chest rising in breath.

"Thank God!" I muttered quietly to myself, thankful that if nothing else went right tonight, at least I was safe in the knowledge that I had not lost Kirk to the whims of these evil people.

I looked once again over to Jake, then diverted my attention back to John, still att my feet, but looking at Kirk also, watching him stir back into life.

"You are an evil person, John!" I pronounced to his otherwise distracted head.

He turned to look up at me, before saying - "Who, me? Coming from a vampire, that is a bit rich, do you not think so?"

"No, I do not think so, sir!!! At least if I kill, I do so to stay alive, if alive is the proper word for my existence, but to you, killing is for what? What are you killing in the name of, exactly??? Not for the survival of your own existence, surely! What have you got to gain from killing James or Rob, or Lars, or even us vampires, if kill us you can? What do you stand to gain? ANd why???" I asked him, genuinely wanting to know.

There was also the thought in the back of my head that if I kept the guys talking, at least for a while longer, then I could forestall the inevitable deaths of James, Rob and Lars, at least until Kirk and I got up to our full strength again, to do some proper damage.

"Domination, mon cher, domination!!! Jake wants to open the gates to Hell itself, to commune with the Debil, to gain power over all the known world for himself. Think of the power such a position would hold, think of the money, the freedom, the sheer power!!! Nothing would stand in our way, nothing would limit us to what we could od, once we have the very Devil on our side!!! What are the lives of five people to us, when we have so much to gain afterwards?" John asked me, the light from the gates of Hell breaking in his eyes, making him look positively demonic already to me right then, without the aid of selling his soul to the Devil.]

"Oh how corny, how predictable, how convenienent to you that you have a gateway to Hell right under the very mansion you own!!!2 I said, with an arch roll of my eyes. "Next you will be telling me that a guy called Zuul lives in yuor damn refridgeratoor!"

"I beg your pardon?" John asked, in genuine confusion.

"Have you never seen Ghostbusters, John?" came Kirk's tired voice. "Zuul was a demon who appeared on occasion in Sigourney Weaver's fridge!"

John frowned, before saying - "How delightful! I can say without any degree of shame at all, that I have never had the dubious pleasure of ever watching that film, if film it is!"

He then looked to Kirk, before saying - "Pitiful creatures, the pair of you! You are such an abomination upon Earth, yet look at you!! Supposed higher up the evolutionary ladder than mere humans, more advanced, yet look at you now!! Hung upon the cross like defenceless little humans!!"

There was something about the way he said the word humans that made it sound like the gravest of insults, and I suppose, in a way it kind of was. I did not like to be reminded of what I once was, and neither did I like to be reminded of the fact that I was still subject to the whims of others, even now.

There was something in him, now, that I was only seeing for the first time now, maybe something in the way that he was standing, the way he held himself, that reminded me so much of the way Kirk held himself now that he was changed into a vampire. There was that certain other-wordly elegance that being a preternatural being gave you, only Kikr carried it off so much better - mainly because there had been an element of said elegance in him already as a human.

I groaned, then hung my head once again, as the pieces of the puzzle slowly started to sink into place.

"It's you, isn't it?? When we first arrived here, Rob claimed to have seen a tall man standing by the gates, in the rain - that was you, wasn't it? And when the lights went out with the force of the thunderstorm, then Kirk went missing - you'd hidden him hadn't you? To turn him yourself? What kind of an abominatiuon are you?" I asked him.

"No worse than you my dear, no worse than you!" John reminded me. "You are but a blight on the face of the Earth, just like me - a joke in the eye of God! He who does not even recognize our very existence, any more!"

"Enough with the preaching, already, John! Do not compare us with the likes of you!!! Vampires we may be now, but do not make the mistake of calling us abominations!! Neither of us are prepared to kill for personal gain - we merely kill to survive!! Who is the abomination now, huh?" Kirk pointed out, calmly, his eyes burning with more anger than his words currently did.

"Maybe so, but that will not matter much to you for too much longer. The time has almost come upon us to open the very gates to Hell itself, and take on the power and the might and everything else the Devil himself sees fit to bestow upon us!" Joh said, drawing himself up to his full height, which seemed puny from the greater height and advantage of where I hung on the cross.

"Tell me something else, befrore you invite Lucifer out to dine, can you tell us why us? Why did you need Metallica??? Why did you need to turn Kirk and I into vampires, Rob into a werewolf, but to leave Lars and James as mere humans? I just do not understand!!" I said, eyes flickering, wavering slightly to the Hellhounds, who were getting more and more restless with each passing moment now.

I could see Jake behind John, administering some kind of salve to the bodies of Rob, Lars and James, who all looked as though none of them werr finding the experience particlarly comfortable, nor comforting.

"We needed sacrifices to open the gates to Hell - one human, two vampires, one werewolf and one hero!" John said. "Jake found a particular rite for the opening of the gates to hell in an old fifteenth century text. Of course, I still remember when it first came out!!!"

At Kirk's startled exclamation, John gave a triumphant look.

"Yes, I really have been around that long!" Jake himself is but a mere babe in arms compared to me, yet still he is even older thatn you, Shannyn!" he said.

"How old is he? He looks no older than 35, I'd say!" I commented.

"Let's just say he is at least 500 years old," John said smugly.

"Vampire?" Kirk asked.

"Werewolf!" John corrected, without even looking to Kirk at all.

Another piece of the puzzle firmly in place then. I remembered once again, the feeling of something furry brushing past me in a darkened corridor right before Rob went missing, right before he got mauled by an unknown beast at the time, right before he turned into a werewolf.

"Ohhh, God!" I groaned. "So all of this really was a set up, wasn't it? You really did have all this planned out right from the beginning, didn't you? Didn't you? There was no plans to record an album! You just needed us all here to prey on us one by one, until we fitted into the scheme of things - your scheme of things, I might add! Why opick on us? Why not pick on someone else - some bums off the street?"

"Whom no one would miss?? Hardly. That would defeat the object, would it not??? We have tried that before, and the Gates refused to open. We needed someone who wielded enough power of their own, already, who had the adulation and love of many. There is nothing so powerful as love, power, respect in this world, so to sacrifice that to gain greater power, greater respect, greater adulation, is but a fair trade do you not think?" John told me, calmly.

I did not answer his question, and neither did Kirk. Although there was something in what he'd said that prompted me to asl something else. Actually there were a few things he'd said, but I could only ask one thing at a time.

"You have tried this before?" I asked.

"And it failed every time. I have a feeling this time we will be more successful. We have never had such powerful subjects as you before," John said.

"There was something else you mentioned earlier," Kirk said, and I felt him in my head, picking up on something else I'd noticed in John's earlier soliloquy.

"Yes, Kirk?" John asked, almost pleasanly.

"You said you needed one hero as a sacrifice. Who is the hero?" asked Kirk, and I caught a fleeting glimpse of first James, then Lars in Kirk's mind.

It had to be one of them, but which one???

John opened his mouth to reply, but a shudder from deep within the Earth forestalled any comment he might have made, any reply he might have had for the Vampiric guitarist, and the butler's eyes grew wide and excited at some new prospect.

"The time ha come to unleash Hell on Earth!!! Finally, this Earth shall be ours!!!" he crowed, before practically running to Jake's side, more sprightly than I would have imagined such an old guy to be. But then, I forgot, he was old, but then again he wasn't a guy, was he? He was a vaampire, just like Kirk, Just like me. In fact, he'd made Kirk, and had, by default made me. I felt grateful to be a vampire but not that grateful. Not if I still had to lose my life ...

dun - dun - DUNNNN!!!!

What will happen to our friendly Vampires???

And who is the hero that John was speaking of??

Stay tuned to find out!!!
