I love the Load and Reload covers. When I found out much later WHAT it was, I thought it was slightly disturbing, but not something to like them less.
I love the colours and the general abstract image. You know, it's not something obvious like a car or something.

And maybe not related to this topic: But do you people also get the image of the album cover in your head when you listen to a song? Or atleast associate it with the dominating colour? When I hear a Black Album song for example, I think of the black colour. When I hear a KEA song, I think of red. This goes for any music out there that I know the album cover of.

I know exactly what you mean and I love it when that happens. To me, that means they were smart with choosing the album cover. Load and ReLoad are orange, and Ride the Lightning is various shades of blue. The only ones that don't do this much are Sad But True and All Nightmare Long, which aren't the same "color" as the album. To me, both of those songs are red.

Sad But True is Orange for me. All nightmare long hasn't got any color. It has got a white picture with black ghosts in it. Dunno where it comes from, thats just what I see when I listen to it. :P

There's one strange thing about Death Magnetic - everytime I hear the song from it, I feel the smell of the album! When I got it it just smelled so differently, and now when I'm listening to DM (especially Unforgiven III) I always feel that smell... I find it very interesting how I momorized something like that....

Ah a smell.. now thats interesting! What smell is it? Can you relate it to any smell we know? :)

No it's not something I could say it's bad or it's good! It's just different... I don't know...

But interesting.... I mean there's a questrion: why do I always remember that!? And why is that happening very intensivly while listening to Unforgiven II??

Ok - now I'm over reacting..

Oh but you ARE right its pretty unusual.. Maybe you have some experiences including that smell that, when you listen to The unforgiven III, you automatically and unconciously think of that experience? :P

At first when I found out what it was on the cover I was grossed out and a bit bewildered by it,but now i'm fine with it now and I find to be an pretty interesting and fascinating concept. :P

So What do you think and does anybody know why they chose this artwork to cover the albums?

Load
The cover of the album is original artwork entitled "Semen and Blood III." It is one of three photographic studies by Andres Serrano created in 1990 by mingling the artist's own semen and bovine blood between two sheets of Plexiglas.
Reload
The cover of the album is original artwork depicting urine and blood. It is one of three photographic studies by Andres Serrano created in 1990 by mingling the artist's own urine and bovine blood between two sheets of Plexiglas.

I found out about the semen from Behind the Music. Yeah, I wouldn't say that it fits the Metallica mold but I think that's just fine.
I didn't know about the artist though until I read this thread. It kind of clears things up for me. I always thought, hmm, so how do you approach someone about using their semen for a cover? :dance But now I get it--it was the artist's OWN semen. Load off my mind. *bad pun intended*

At first I thought Load was somekinda lava lamp and Re-load was fire. When I found out what they really were, I wasn't exactly disgusted but I thought "wow I would've never ever guess that!" I think its pretty cool that Andres Serrano took things that would normally make people cringe or get grossed out and turned them into something very aesthetically appealing.

As for associating the album with things, with the Loads, even if I'm thinking of people those colors are integrated in there somehow. Except Memory is green and blue but I think thats cuz of the video haha. But I hardly ever think of the same thing everytime I hear a song or album. However, Of Wolf and Man is black mixed with a cold blue-gray I think because of "chill in the air cold as steel tonight." I love that line, not really sure why But it always sticks with me.

I never thought of a smell for an album but I think thats pretty cool! haha :horns2
