I really like it. Its alot closer to their old stuff then anything. Now there are people out there that will disagree but compared to Load, Reload, St. Anger...when they were just trying out new things, Death Magnetic has actually come closer to the old stuff which is cool.

I didn't like the fact that it's so loud compared to the other albums cos when i've got tallica on shuffle on my ipod it practically deafens me when anything on DM comes on. For me, it's a 'grower' (lol), I immediately loved My Apocalypse, but the other tracks took a few listens. But now, i'm really loving it. |

I have to agree with Raquel (Funky Monk) when it comes to my rough view on this album. After 6 months, I haven't really been able to get into the album as much as I'd hoped for. While the band certainly captured some brilliant moments, like The Day that Never comes, All Nightmare Long and Cyanide for me, there are also many spots on the album that don't cut it for me. As with St Anger, most of the songs seem to be unnescesary long. I have this feeling the worst with End of the Line and Broken, Beat & Scarred. It gets to the point of annoyance with me and that's why those songs are my least favorite on this album. Still, pretty much all songs do have great parts or riffs in them, it's just that with some songs they are a rarity. I'm also disappointed with the sound they've chosen with this album. The drum sound is very dry. It's nothing compared to the more lively sound of the 90s albums (when the drums sounded like they were in a large room. Hell, even AJFA sounded more lively!). Also the guitar sound is not a sound that makes me wanna have it too. All the 90s albums have a guitar sound that is to die for, but this sounds pretty much like some cheap digital amp system, instead of all the high end stuff they have in their possession. Does Rob even have any credits on this album? I've heard what Rob is capable of as a bass player. He seems to be playing really below his standard on this album and I had expected more epic basslines. Maybe the band is to blame for not using his stuff...who knows.. Great that the solos are back! Kirks solos in That Was Just Your Life and The Day are my faves I think. The solo in My Apocalypse starts off great, but the ending bugs me to tears. So out of place! It would have been a lot nicer if he ended that one with some fast run. In some of his other solos I also felt that it was kinda out of place. And a very honest closing: I think I could've lived without this album. Like I said earlier: The songwriting seems to be kinda all over the place and on some moments I really feel like they made this album just because WE demanded them to. Like they really had to push themselves a lot to come up with something. Where are the awesome songstructures of the 90s, that flowed so naturally? I mean admit it: There's no brilliant song like Sandman, that will conquer the worlds hit playlists for years. On the old albums, they tried really hard to write and sound as mature and adult people. Especially with AJFA, Black Album and Load. With St Anger and DM, it sounds like they wanna stay kids and aim for MTV. It's just the lyrics, the sound and their style that makes me feel that way. Kinda weird! |

I totally agree with this statement. Though I really enjoyed the album I felt that it was to planned out like they were trying too hard to come with their older sound.like they structured it too much. |

I agree. I like the album and like the fact that old school Metallica is (kinda) back but to make good music you don't have to repite yourself. They can still have their agressive style and still be make something new and fresh you know. |

Exactly my thought! Sadly, nobody knows the reason for that, and it's not only with Metallica. |

I liked it when it came out, and i still it today, its still a great record, though i do still wince on occasion when hearing a certain drumtrack (very reminicent of St Anger IMO, minus the trash-can sound :P) |

It is incredible how time helps you to modify your point of view. I say taht cuz when I first heard DM I was all excited, like OMG, THEY'RE BACK!!. But now, with a colder heart, I can say that only 3 songs from the album really got me, and they are: That was just your life (I loved it since the first time I heard it on radio), The day that never comes (Sounds great, old style that we all love and enjoy...) and "My apocalypse" (That song is soooo strong!). The first time I heard "Cyanide" I liked it, specially lyrics, and "all nightmare long" but these days those songs don't catch me anymore (if you know what I mean) I can still say that "Broken, Beat and scarred" and "End of the line" are like it must feel to smoke a carton box flapside. No flavor for me. Unforgiven 3 (That doesn't deserve to be part of the saga), and the other songs, I appreciate that you can hear some solos around, but they feel just OK, just filling some track space. First time I heard album I thought (Pretty excited, kinda fangirl style ) That album is so "them", is perfect! Now I think it ain't perfect, but at least it isn't "St. Anger", and it means that they're still rockin' (and that's always good news )(I hope I won't offend anyone, cuz most of times I post something, someone feels it like if it was personal and feels quite hurt, and that's not what I mean OK? ) |

Thank you very much for being that comprensive. I wrote that at the end of my post, cuz It has happened to me that I express what I really think about something that Metallica or any of the guys has done, and I try to make it very polite and nice, and out of nowhere there's some fangirl bashing upon cuz she loves everything they do, no matter what they do, without expressing a judgement with criteria upon it, and cuz of that they think that one hates them, and they're missing all the point. I hope I don't get in trouble... |

I love Death Magnetic Its one of the most brilliant albums I've ever had the pleasure to listen :horns2 I like all the songs At first I didn't really liked Unforgiven III because of the intro...but now after listening to the song a lot and really thinking about the lyrics its an amazing song Well at first my favorite song was My Apocalypse. Now I'm not really sure between My Apocalypse and All Nightmare Long. Maybe I got more into All Nightmare Long after the kick ass video I listen to DM everyday I really love it and its for sure on my mp3 :horns2

Girlie, I totally know how you feel, lol. I've had that experience of many a band's message board (thankfully, not this one). For example, I was on the Avenged Sevenfold board and I critisized the band's cover of "Paranoid" (Yes, THAT "Paranoid"), saying that it really sucked and they didn't even capture the essence of the song, I also stated that they're a horrible cover band and shouldn't even try and cover the songs they have (if you listen to their rendition of "Walk"--yes, THAT "Walk"!--you'll totally know what I mean)...immediately, I had like 50 fangirls flipping out on me and questioning whether I was a true fan or not. Just because you don't like EVERY SINGLE THING they put out doesn't mean you're not a true fan...on the contrary, a true fan knows when their favorite band fails miserably, and calls them out on it. For example, Max and other people on the board really didn't like the sound quality on the album, and they made that clear. A couple of us got a bit angry cause we thought they were being ungrateful...but in reality, it really did show how much they actually care. They wouldnt feel so strongly about this issue if they didn't feel so strongly about the band, ya know what I mean? But keep in mind, pointing out their flaws should always be kept in moderation, cause if you do it too much you're just pissy and never satisfied. XD As for my general opinion on the album (I forgot to add this to my first post), there are certain songs that I don't think are as perfectly amazing as I thought they were--I think everyone on here can agree that that's attributed to all the buzz about it being released--but for the most part, I think it's a really great album as a whole...the songs flow together quite well and you can tell they put in a moderate effort, despite some people feeling like they're trying to hard to sound like they used to. For me, this is the return of the Mighty Hetfield, the one that ruled the stages even during the St. Anger tour, on actual recorded material. This is the return of the awesome Mr. Hammett, showing everyone how it's done even after all these years. The return of Lars, being the same aggressive Danish fuck he's always been, and the debut of Rob, who really just proves his worth whenever he's playing. I think it's a welcome return to true form--the Metallica that only WE the fans know and love, one which they can grow as artists from, its a solid stepping stone for what may come in the future. And the fact that it was a good album, it's definitely a good sign for what they have up their sleeves. |
