The free tickets that we got were for ALL THE WAY up in the arena, far away from everything. We spent the 2 first bands up there, but saw some seats were empty way down in the first ring! So for Metallica we went down and we were able to stay there! :biggrin This gave us the opportunity to watch them from much closer and take better pics. So we illegally got ourselves better places. :cool

A huge letdown: The sound was awfull. :( I had expected Metallica to have better sound than the support acts but this was not the case. The sound was loud and hissy to the ears, so good thing I had earplugs with me...however, with earplugs all bass frequencies were overpowering. On songs with double bass drumming (Overkill) I couldn't hear any solos for example.

The setlist was not what I had expected. Of course Dyers Eve was a big surprise, but due to the bad sound, you could only hear a huge cloud of thunder and the basic chords. The most awesome songs to me were King Nothing and Sad but True. It really got me going.
Too bad that they didn't do Battery (2nd time seeing them, both times no Battery while I really hoped for it). Also no Wherever I May Roam, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Whiplash, Creeping Death, All Nightmare Long (really had expected this one) or another cool DM track like Cyanide.
In gerenal: not enough KEA and RTL songs.

I think it's really cool that they did Overkill especially because I'm really into that one lately. But even though I couldn't hear much detail of it, I still like the fact that it was there. The Judas Kiss was another surprise, but this one also got really wrecked by the bad sound. :(

Still it's cool that I saw them, but if the tickets hadn't been for free, I would have been pissed.

Enough bullshit, the PICS! I really like how some came out pretty awesome!

Awesome pics !! :horns2
I'm sorry about the bad sound. I really hope that's not happening in Helsinki. I'm also gonna take earplugs there, but mainly because of the warm up bands. I'm not a fan of each one of them and I'm afraid I'm gonna be in agony before Metallica gets on the stage. :ugh:
You had very good seats eventually. :)
Did you had any trouble bringing a camera there? Or did you use a cell phone cam?
About the setlist... I loved the fact that there was three Justice songs. I really would like to hear them too. I've always loved "...And Justice For All " live. I just listened today St. Petersburgh concert from last year and "Justice For All" sounded awesome!! :cool :horns2

Oh you were in a hotel... I had to drive 300 km back home. I was in bed at 3:33 after 3,5 hours of driving.

@ Sanne: also a big part in the sound being bad is because the arena is like on big reverb generator. When soundchecking Lars' drums. Every hit echoed through the arena like a motherfucker.
I think I'm gonna avoid big indoor concerts from now on because this is not the first time I have a bad experience with indoor concerts.
Last year at Pinkpop festival it sounded so much better (even when I was farther away from the stage).

The camera was no problem at all! :D
I'm not a fan of either support band either, luckily they don't play really long. The first one was like 30-40 minutes and the 2nd was about an hour I think.

for me it would have been like 600km. so i thought staying at a hotel would be the better choice.

did you also go to the hard rock cafe in cologne?

The sound in Ahoy was surprisingly good, I'm curious to hear what it will be like in 5 weeks at Sonisphere. And I agree with Kimmi, you were damn lucky with 3 AJFA songs, I only got One :td:

I just read on a site they were there for some signing and stuff. I didn't know anything about this yesterday, neither did we know there was a hard rock cafe at all. We just wanted to play safe and stay in the area of the arena, even though were 3 hours early.

Great to know... I'm not gonna bring a camera there, only my cell phone and I'm not gonna take pics. I may try (depends if I can see anything else than little characters in distance from 17th row) to get a few but it's my first Met concert so I wanna concentrate on the music. :)
But if I'm lucky and win the m&g... I just have to buy a better camera... :P
Good to know those other bands are not playing that long. I guess I'll survive with my earplugs...

Whoa dude, this is so awesome :horns2 Thanks for sharing (it's so awesome when you read about the show and see the pics right away, it kinda feels like I've been there myself) :) I'm glad for you, too bad the sound was messed up, but for me person who has never seen Tallica live it would sound great anyway :P

Awesome pics! I can't believe you watched Dyers Eve live, I SO MUCH ENVY YOU!!! Dyers Eve...man...*shakes head* And I'd love to see King Nothing too!

The sound last year in Sofia sucked absolutely the same way you described and the gig was at a stadium! People who were far away from the stage said it was brilliant, I was front row and I was going to get an ear bleed from The Sword's bass, the people around me too, so the security guards gave all of us cotton (no one had earplugs with them). Metallica's sound was even worse - we could hear only bass and drums and the sound on the whole was low, even lower than The Sword's one!! On Fade to Black I had to stop screaming completely only to hear Kirk's end solo :ugh:
