Ok, I want to make a few covers with just me on vocals, and the software I have is Audacity.

How can I convert the files correctly and where to upload them to?

I'm technonlicilly illiterate, help please...

I thought you could record them automatically 'into' Audacity.

I don't know how you want to record stuff? With what kind of thing? Mic? MP3-player?

Well most software lets you choose what kind of file type you want when saving the recording. I've never used Audacity though.

I can't find any info on file formats for MySpace-tracks...

Your pc mic records wav-files, I guess.

I think mp3 and wma are the most common file formats for audio, and I suppose MySpace will support those file formats.

-->ALWAYS SAVE YOUR TRACK WITH SEPERATE LAYERS<--
Then you'll always have the original file to convert from, and you can always edit if you want.

I don't know about other free software avaible, I mostly stick with things I know/read about in a pc-magazine. I'm not that fond of unknown software.
I've installed a trial-version of Adobe Audition, but the trial ends in 30 days.

About Vista: I have no idea. You got Movie Maker, but that's for video's rather than audio.

I use Cool Edit Pro for my recordings. It has tons of features I don't even know about. But it does multitracking and EQ'ing of the tracks so I'm alright.

I got a pirated version though. Downloaded with torrent.

If you record yourself singing through Audacity, you can save your recording as WAV afterwards.
If you want to safe it as a MP3, you'll have to download an additional thing first to be able to do so.
I think you should visit the website of Audacity (if there's an existing one, that is) and check it out.
I tend to use Audacity for simple voice recordings and export them as WAV and it works perfectly fine with me.
The audio quality is also pretty good.
