So recently, I've been finding myself stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to playing my guitar. I've been particularly busy between work and college, and generally feel so tired when I get home, it's rather difficult to muster up the motivation to learn to play. Of course, there's that old biscuit that tends to lean towards "a real musician shouldn't need a reason to practice" - well, other than the idea of self improvement. Sadly, I'm not one of these people. I need a massive kick up the arse before I make the move to pick up my guitar and learn something, and even then, I only tend to learn what I've been given. So my fellow musicians, I ask of you, what do YOU use to motivate yourself? How does it work? Discuss! |

Well, I remember Kirk saying that it is good to learn to play some other music styles when you are kinda stuck with guitar playing. He recommended Jazz. Also, don't do shit you don't want to do. If you are bored with whatever you were playing, then so be it. Explore new stuff. I was never the practising kind myself. When I just started I did some, but I just think it's boring. When I first started, all I wanted to do was learn that one riff or song that I liked so much. Only in the last couple of years I've been attracted to making my own music. And now, I see it's becoming my primary goal now. So instead of wanting to be in a Metallica cover band, I now wanna have a band and play my own stuff and just use some covers as live filler. It's funny how things changed, and sometimes I long back to the days that I was worshipping all that is Metallica and Megadeth, but I just don't feel like playing all of their stuff anymore. I can't play all of their songs, but I don't even want to anymore. I don't have the patience to learn someone else's song note for note anymore. It's all good. Just find something to enjoy. And maybe you'll never find it, and you'll be one of those musicians that once played an instrument but grew out of it. You might even be picking it up after 10 years of not touching it.

I realize I'm a bit late but who gives a fuck, I feel like sharing my thoughts. If you don't like doing it, then give it a break, your fingers might start to miss it, and you might feel more motivated than ever. It worked for me with piano. You dont even need to practice 24/7, practice whenever you're in the mood. Music is a tool, so use that tool when it's needed. Like I said, if you don't for a while then wait, 'cause you might crave it later. I just listen to guitarists/drummers/pianists/bassists/insert instrument-ist here that are a million times better than me so that I can think "I'm gonna play extra hard tonight, 'cause I wanna be better than them!!" It's that or I don't play my instrument until a certain point so it can all just spill out. Like I might stop playing guitar for a week (it doesn't seem that long but that's like a year for me!!) and then I'll pick it up the next week and knock myself for as long as possible that day. It works, dude.... |
