Somewhere in 934...

I.

Our convoy of seven people traveled for a week and now we were crossing the border of our land, stepping into very dangerous territory, the land of looters and outsiders who prayed on travelers. No man's land, Gods help us. I shivered at the thought and pulled the the hood of my cape deeper, covering my hair and face. You never know who's watching...

Yesterday me and Meg changed into man's clothing for security reasons, since a small party of armed man would look less attractive to robbers. I looked down at my legs, covered in leather pants, the money bag was visibly heavy, and pulled my cape, covering myself completely. I always liked man's clothes, it was so much more comfortable and useful than dresses. My father didn't mind me dressing in pants. He treated me more like a boy, trained me in sword fighting and hunting. My mother died soon after me and my brother were born, and there weren't many women around to teach me how to be a girl.

I spent more time in the company of soldiers than in the comfort of the castle. My brother on the other hand didn't like trips, horseback rides, or fights, he was more interested in manipulating people into doing what he wanted using lies and deception. He surrounded himself with people loyal to him and who shared his interested, and rarely left the comfort of castle. He didn't show interest in warfare political or economical decisions, despite all father's attempts. Father had finally gave up and concentrated on me, who was soaking up his knowledge like a sponge. But, it wasn't matter what I had learned, or how good I was at anything, my brother was a first born and had all the rights to the crown. And he was waiting for it impatiently.

Dark days started after our father died in a hunting accident. My always lethargic twin managed to move fast and before our father's body was buried he took complete control of the army. He killed and replaced commanders loyal to me and my father with his own people, making sure I had no support to overthrow him. My own home became a prison, my brother's people were following me everywhere, making sure I wasn't conspiring with someone. All I had left was five of my personal guards, and Meghan, my Lady in waiting by title, and my best friend since I could ever remember.

In the two years of my sibling's ruling, our land slid into poverty. Everything that my father worked so hard to achieve for his people perished at the hands of his son. Nicolas partying and foolish war plans tripled taxes and our people were struggling to keep their farms. I felt bad, and tried to reason with him, but he wasn't listening. Instead he found a way to get rid of me, making an agreement with one of the Kings and giving him my hand in marriage.

I agreed to this in hope of coming back. I needed an army and this was my chance, the only one I could see. The only problem was, my husband to be had a cruel reputation and the last thing I wanted was to bring a rain of blood over my country. Was I doing the right thing? I had to help my people in honor of my father... as much as I didn't want to marry someone I had never met... someone much older than me... someone with another wife..

I sighed and tried to shake the heavy thoughts out of my mind. Meg was riding beside me, her face covered from me with the deep hood of her cape. She felt my gaze and turned to give me an encouraging smile. I smiled back and looked ahead of me.

Suddenly the road fell out of focus, everything around me changed, weird shapes, bright colors, strange noises, strange smells... someone was talking right next to me... I felt lightheaded and weak. I tried to cling to my horse, but my body refused to move as someone was holding it in the iron grip. Blood rushed away from my head... my vision cleared and Meg's face appeared at my side and I noticed that even she looked different somehow, but it all was back to normal in seconds. Meg's words had finally reached my petrified mind.

“Alex? What's wrong?” Her face became more focused and I felt that whatever it was had passed.

“I... I don't know... I think... I'm fine... I think I'm just tired...” I looked around making sure everything was back to normal. No marks, nothing is out of the place... and looks like I was the only one witnessing it... weird... I felt chills slowly creeping down my spine and gripped tighter to the harness.

“I feel better now...”

“You look pale... we need find a safe place to camp for the night.” Meg kicked her horse, riding ahead and closing in to Vlad, the head of our guards. He looked back at me and gave her a quick nod, giving orders to his solders. Two went forward, sending their horses into gallop.

Soon they came back with a news that there is a suitable small area just inside the forest, not too far from the main road, but completely hidden from the view. Camp was set up before darkness came over the land and after a quick dinner we settled for the night.

I couldn't stop thinking about what had happened to me earlier though, I couldn't find any reasonable explanation for it. No one saw it... no one felt it... I was the only one. One thing I was sure in, whatever I saw wasn't from this world. With that thought I slowly drifted into dreams.

---

Loud noise, terrifying bright round eyes moving fast toward me, Meg's face with wide open eyes on my left, her mouth is open releasing scream of horror that drowned in blood chilling roar of the monster. I couldn't take my eyes off the approaching beast, completely paralyzed with fear. Another loud roar burst through air around me...my hand was desperately searching for my sword, which I had laid by me before going to sleep, but it wasn't there...

“Alex!...Wake up!” Meg was shaking me by my shoulders. “Come on! Wake up!”

Finally my hand gripped the handle of the familiar cold metal and I raised it in front of me, opening my eyes to the silent darkness around me. Quiet summer night, the moon shyly peaking from behind the clouds, and fire hungry crackling on the wood. No monster...

“Oh...thank Gods...it was a just a dream..” I lowered my sword.

“You scared me! What did you see?” Meg was sitting by me looking very concerned.

“I...I don't know... it was... a monster... I've never seen anything like it... it has huge glowing eyes .. brighter than the moon.. it was roaring so loud!” My body felt hot and stiff, and I rubbed my face, trying to get the horrible image out of my head. I would give anything for a dip in the cold water... it's always helps me to clear my head.

“Meg... Do you mind if we sneak to that lake we saw not far from here? Maybe if we go for a swim, it will help me to forget my nightmare...”

Meg looked at me and smiled. “And it will take all this dust from the road off!”

We quietly left our camp without anyone noticing, while the soldier on guard was looking in the direction of the road. We sneaked deep into the forest to a small lake hidden by tall trees. The water was sparkling in the moonlight, looking so inviting. We quickly slid out of our clothes and stepped into the cold and refreshing waters. Dirt and dust from the long travel was washed off and now the water didn't seems so cold as at first.

I lowered my head and let the water cover my ears, no sounds, just stars in the sky and in the lake all around me, for the first time since my father's death I felt at peace. For a moment I forgot about all my worries, letting thoughts about the uncertain future dissolve into the water. I wish I could stay here forever, just melt into nature... just be this cold lake...

I felt Meg tugging on my arm and I raised my head from the water. Distant noise of swords slamming together, screams of death, I looked at Meg reading my thoughts in her eyes. Our camp was under attack. We picked up our clothes and hid by the roots of the big tree, trying to dress. But by the time we were ready it all became silent. We clung to a tree and waited for a long time, hoping for the best, but nothing happened. No sounds, just dark forest, sky full of stars... no movement, no one was looking for us... We slowly made our way back to the camp, hiding from every shadow and came upon the horrid picture. Our soldiers were dead, horses and luggage was gone. We were alone. Two young women in a barbarian land.

"Alex...what are we going to do now?" Meg looked at me with wide eyes.

"I don't know... I just don't know..." I was as scared as she was. ”One thing for sure, I'm not going back, I guess we can try to go as planned...” There was no where else to go, my brother was probably celebrating, the whole kingdom was his. No turning back...

II.

In the morning we found a few of our horses that were wondering around and had somehow escaped the capture. I had my money with me on my belt and we were wearing man's clothes, all of it wasn't so bad... if we were lucky enough we just may make it to our destination.

All the next day, Meg and I traveled following the main road through the forest, hiding in the trees from every person we saw. Darkness was closing in on us and we sighed in relief when we came to a small town. We decided to stay at the tavern for the night, since we were both too hungry and too tired to do otherwise. We couldn't even think of a night outside without guards. We made sure our appearance points out on the young knights, a little dirt on the face and hidden long locks, capes big enough to swallow our forms. We gave each other one last look and walked through the door.

There were a few men at the bar and only two at the tables. They all turned to look at the newcomers and after finding nothing of interest, quickly returned to their business. We breathed out and chose a far away table, trying not to draw any attention. The next small party of customers drew more interest and we had time to look around.

“Don't forget that we're playing men, so our voices should be as low as possible.” I whispered to Meg.

“We hardly look like men, more like young boys...” She lowered her head to me.

We ordered drinks and food, relived that the waiter didn't notice anything suspicious and hardly even looked at us. We felt much more comfortable and turned our attention to our food, being hungry all day made everything taste so good.

After finishing with my meal, I took a closer look at the people in the tavern. One of the men on the other side of the room caught my eyes. He was sitting alone, his eyes were slightly closed, looking asleep, but he wasn't. I saw him catch the waiter's hand in mid air when he tried to grab the pint off the table.

He had black curly hair and was dressed in simple middle class clothes, but there was something about him that drew my attention. Suddenly, he opened his eyes and looked right at me, I quickly looked away, pulling my head deeper in my shoulders and turning my attention to my drink, taking a big sip. The burning liquid hit my mouth and throat, and I immediately spat it out.

“That is so strong!” The words flew out of my mouth without the thought. What ever was in my cup was definitely not water! The air around me felt silent, and every man in the tavern turned our way. I froze in place, wishing I was invisible. We're so dead.....

The man I had been looking at earlier quickly got up from his table and walked towards us, shaking his head.

"I thought I told you two to get my room ready, and you're here having a drink!? You lazy boys! Get back to work, I don't pay you to party!" He grabbed my arm and pulled me to him, whispering.

"This is no place for young girls... go with me on that, unless you want to give these guys a chance to realize who you really are." He started walking to the stairs, pulling me behind, I turned and saw Meg following us. Both were too scared to protest. Stranger opened one of the rooms and let us in, closing the door after making sure no one had followed us.

“Do you have any idea what would've happened in there if those men knew?” He made himself comfortable on the chair.

“Thank you sir...” Meg's voice sounded shaky.

“My name is Kirk, you don't have to be afraid of me, I love helping damsels in distress.” His face lit with beautiful smile. “So what's your story?”

Meg and I looked at each other, something in the open face of that man made us trust him, or maybe it was just our desperation and his willingness to help. I gave Meg a nod and she stepped forward.

“This is Lady Alexia of Chersones, and my name is Meghan, or just Meg.”

Kirk stood up and quickly lowered to one knee. “My Ladies... forgive me for my behavior... I didn't realize...”

“Please, your fast thinking saved us, there is nothing to apologize for, we should be thanking you!” I didn't let him finish, motioned for him to get up. “We will tell you all, and you can decide if you're willing to help us, not for free of course.”

We sat down on the bed and Meg started our story. I didn't interrupt her, hearing what happened to us made me question if I made the right decision. I brought death to five solders, now I'm putting in danger Meg's life, all in the hope of taking my land back... is it too high of the price?

Meg finished our story, and our new friend got up from the chair. “I would be honored to help you Ladies... and if you don't mind, I have a friend I'd like to join us.”

R@quel, thank you so much for changing title so quickly!

And thank you all for your warm comments!

Now I can continue.

Just want to say that I'm not abandoning my other story. I'll write both at same time, hoping that my imagination can handle it...
