I love how he takes care of her. He's just so tender and caring it hurts, it's just too cute for words.

I can't wait to find more as this story will develop.

This story actually makes me wish that James was my dad. He is absolutely, positively, delightfully adorable and endearing! And I really like Olivia. She has got some spunk!

Thanks everyone. Your replies absolutely made my day. :D The next update is one of a two-parter. I'll try to get the other chapter up tomorrow.

*********************

James put the truck in park and grabbed his sunglasses from the passenger seat. The parking lot was already filling up, even though he was a good half hour early. Olivia had begged him not to come, but he'd ignored her request and even invited Lars along to watch the game with him. Lars had then invited Kirk, who in turn invited Jason, and before he knew it, a full Metallica contingent was heading to Olivia's first soccer game.

"Hey, buddy," Lars called, walking over to James. "You pumped? Jacked? Ready to yell at the other team if they score on our girl?"

James shoved his hands in his pockets. "She said I'm not allowed to yell." He nodded towards Jason and Kirk. "What time did you guys get here?"

"Couple minutes ago. We shoulda brought beer. I thought maybe there would be some, but...there's not."

James grinned. "It's a soccer game, not a bar."

"Exactly," Lars smirked. "That's why we shoulda brought some."

They made their way down to the bleachers and found a couple of available rows in the back. James wanted to be as inconspicuous as possible, and hoped nobody recognized them. This was supposed to be about Olivia and her team, not him and the band. He sat between Kirk and Lars, and scanned the field through his sunglasses, trying to find Olivia in the sea of girls warming up.

"There she is," Kirk pointed. She had her uniform on, and was still wearing the warm-up hoody that had the school crest emblazoned on the back. Her hair was up in a pony tail, and she was chatting to one of her teammates, stretching one arm across her body and holding it with the other. James noted with pride that she looked much tidier than most of the other girls, with her socks pulled up tightly over her shin pads, and her sleeves at her wrists instead of pushed up to her elbows. She smiled at something the other girl said, and then pulled off her sweatshirt.

"Yeah baby! Take it off!" a boy on the lower bleachers called out, and James immediately looked around for something to throw at him.

"Down," Kirk murmured, putting a hand on James' hand, which James hadn't actually realized he'd formed into a fist. "She'll be mortified if you get tossed from the crowd."

"You gotta admit, though, she does look pretty cute," Lars chuckled, and then ducked when James reached out to smack him. "Hey! I'm just sayin'."

James watched Olivia as she jogged around the field with her teammates. She did look good. She looked healthy and happy, and 14. What the hell was wrong with people! "She's 14," he reminded Lars.

"She's almost 15," Lars shot back.

James shoved him off the bleachers.

"Ow! Dick!" Lars yelled up from the ground.

James just shot him a glare and turned back to watch Olivia. She had finally noticed he was there, and waved at him. He watched as she said something to her teammates and then started to jog over towards him. He stepped down to meet her. "Hey," he grinned, flicking her pony tail in greeting.

"Hey. You came. And you brought...everybody? With you?" She shifted her weight from foot to foot, looking around him to the crowd that was gathering.

"Not everybody. Bob couldn't make it," he told her. "They'll all be quiet, they just wanted to watch you play. And I think the tech guys wanted to see daylight," he grinned. "We don't let 'em out much."

"Okay," she nodded, looking uncertain.

"Hi, Mr. Hetfield." A little blonde appeared at Olivia's side, sliding an arm through hers. "I'm Amy. We met at Liv's sleepover, remember?"

James thought for a moment. "Yeah. Some jackass had just broken up with you. How's that going?" He mentally patted himself on the back for remembering that fact.

"Great. We're back together," she beamed, and James caught Olivia rolling her eyes at that. "Are you staying for the game? We were all gonna go out for dinner together with everybody's parents. You should totally come."

James looked to Olivia for guidance on this one, and she nodded, looking hopeful. "Yeah, that sounds good." He wasn't sure he was going to be any good at socializing with parents, but he'd give it a shot. "You guys should probably get back. Good luck," he reached out and tugged her pony tail again, and then pulled her in tight for a hug and kissed the top of her head. "Love you," he said as she headed down the grass. He said it without even thinking about it, and his eyes went huge as Olivia whipped her head around at him. He felt his face grow hot, and quickly headed back to Lars and the rest of the gang, muttering curse words under his breath.

"What's up?" Kirk asked softly when James took his seat again.

"You know that shitty feeling when you tell a chick you love her and she doesn't say it back right away and you didn't even know you were gonna say it and then you're just fucked?" James muttered all of this quietly so Lars wouldn't hear.

"Yeah..." Kirk said slowly, looking over to James. "Who... Oh wow. James. That's a big deal. What did she say?"

"Nothin'. What the fuck was she gonna say? 'I love you too, guy who isn't my dad but acts like my dad'? Jesus. I'm a fuckin' idiot. I didn't even mean to say it. It just came out. She's gonna think I'm insane."

"She's going to think you care about her. Which is pretty awesome. James, think about it. You're probably the first person to say that to her since her mom died. And there's no way she'd remember her mom saying it, she was too young. I bet she's thrilled."

"I do care about her," James mumbled.

"I know you do," Kirk patted his back, smiling.

"Don't touch me," James growled.

"Aww, nice try, you big softie," Kirk grinned, bumping James' shoulder with his own. "Now shut up and watch the game."

aaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwww *melts*

Every new chapter of this fic makes me wonder "what went wrong?", why did they end up separated years later, why did James spend years looking for her, what happened??? What will happen once the retrospective part is over?

Because this, where we are now is so unbelievably touching, so warm and honest and beautiful. The slow growing and building of their relationship of mutual trust and love is beautifully described.

This moment of James' unconscious admission of love just took my breath away.
Beautiful.

I have to say this again...I love how he's enroled in her activities and stuff like a real dad. Him being insecure because he said he lover her... That's James indeed, but he does love her, other wise he wouldn't take care of her the way he does. Now I wonder how the thing with other parents is going to be? Also...I am rather curious, because in the first chapter, if I remember it correctly, there's this weird vibe between Olivia and James, so something went wrong between them and I am just SOOOOOOOOOOOO curious to know what is it.

Thanks for being updating this again.

Everything Bo said!

Plus, the idea of James inviting Lars, who then invites Kirk who then invites Jason is just darling! It makes me melt just imagining these four bad-ass dudes going out to a school soccer game to support James' little girl. But, at the same time, I don't blame Olivia for not wanting him to go. From her perspective I can see how the Metallica boys showing up to her soccer game would be embarrassing!

I loved James' reaction to the boy shouting at her. It's such a fatherly reaction.

And, I'm really looking forward to James interacting with other parents! I hope he does well! :)

LOL. Ohhhh yeah, don't worry, it's all gonna fall apart. Just...not yet. I'm having so much fun writing 90's James as a father figure, I don't want to jump ahead too far to where things start to go wrong.

Take your time. Don't jump ahead right away. I think I am going to speak fro all of us, we don't want a sudden jump in time JUST now. :P We enjoy this soft side of James.

It was very wise to start with the aftermath, with only hints to something bad that happened, and then just jump back to the good old days. It gives a special flavor to already special moments in the past.
Kind of a sweet torture actually, you know that the sweetness won't last, but still, you want more of it. :biggrin

So yeah, more please. Thank you.

Awww I love this story a lot

James acting like a father is awesome :)

He and Olivia have a cute father-daughter like relationship, I'd kill to be James' foster kid and have Kirk, Lars, and Jason as uncles Lol
