You know, my teacher told me back then that one of the main reasons you'd get a blister on you finger was that you're playing too hard. So he advised me to just turn up the volume so I didn't have to play harder to be louder.

Could be a tip  :D

One of the benefits of having a teacher...

Yeah, but I only learned the basics there. I remember there was one song I wanted to learn and he was like "No, that's too fast."
Well fuck him, I learned it and man.. It ain't fast.

 :tu:
+1

sometimes teachers don't know what they're talking about, though. :biggrin

actually, for playing bass, you need a teacher only for the basics anyways. cos if you know them you can learn the rest pretty easy on your own.

but to all the ones of you who teach themselves: get at least an experienced bass player to teach you the techniques and make sure your fingerwork is correct, that might spare you a lot of health problems and it'll make it easier to make faster progress later on.

Tell me 'bout it. I suffered tendinitis (in my left wrist) a few years ago, and when I play electric guitar for too long, my wrist hurts like hell.
So I must do something wrong, I know it's the position my wrist is in, but I don't know how to do it right. I have to work on it.

As for bass and acoustic guitar, I never had any problems like that. And I had lessons for both.

Figures, eh?

I would just watch my brother play and pick up from there.
Does that count?

yup. that sucks for you though cos it's hard to change the position you've gotten used to by now to the correct one. good luck with that though.

Well I started playing bass two years ago, and I've been playing guitar since I was eight... so I've been playing guitar for nine years.

I used to make monthly recordings of me playing my instrument so I could compare my last recording to my newest one in effort to find differences in my playing. :P

Here's another bassist! :dance A newbie bassist. :P
I've been playing guitar for almost 5 years and I've recently took up bass! And I loooove it! :horns2

But now I have a hard time deciding when's time for bass and when for guitar since I love playing both. Oh, cruel life!

Yeah it sucks. And it sucks even more now.. My wrist started hurting like fuck again some weeks ago so I went to the doc and she said it was possibly tendinitis... again  So I had to give my left wrist some rest again.

And now I am basically keeping myself from playing guitar because otherwise I'll fuck my wrist up again.
Luckily, my bass playing techniques are much better, so I thought it'd be a good opportunity to pick up my bass again, also to build up some muscle again.

aw that sucks big time!
did you teach everything yourself or did you ever have a guitar teacher? maybe you should consult one just to show you the technique and then really focus on practicing that? i mean once your wrist recovered fully..

I've had acoustic guitar lessons and bass guitar lessons, but never electric guitar lessons. So the most frustrating thing is that I can see what I'm doing wrong but I just can't find the right way to play, if you know what I mean.

That's why I'm keeping from playing e-guitar until I can get lessons. Which will have to wait 'cause my driving lessons are expensive enough.

But until then, I can happily play bass :)
