I got totally distracted by the announcement of Loki's POV! I can't believe I'm looking forward to it, but I am!

OK, back to Lana. What a wonderful chapter this was. All the painful revelations bringing our Lana in a distraught state, but on the other hand it was necessary and it's good that she finally knows (or strongly suspects at least) who she is and who Sig is and who "the Barbarian" is. Interestingly, the ribbon mystery remains unresolved still :biggrin

I really felt for her here. First faces with the feeling of "eternal loneliness" which was really sad, then the thrill of the discovery that Sig is still alive, only to be replaced by shock of revealing that she is a Nymph and that the unpleasant past she worked hard to forget was never hers to begin with. I loved the setting, first the pile of ashes as she laments over the loss of her only friend, then the fire extinguished just as she is about to plunge into complete darkness regarding her real identity, the darkness closing down on her as she realizes that nothing is what it seems. Let us hope that future will shed some LIGHT on her story... :wink

So, I'm reading this chapter and keep thinking about what Thor's doing!!! I'm such a lost case

Sorry it took me this long to comment!

Okay, Loki's part as I promised. Sorry it's not very long... kids are driving me crazy here!

XVIII.

(Loki's POV)

I stopped by the opening of the cave and looked back, making sure no one had followed the lonely deer. The forest stood still in the morning light and I quickly changed my form back to the normal me, pushing the heavy curtain of vines aside and stepping into the darkness.

I knew this passage well, a long, narrow corridor winding left and right, following the underground river, then a drop to the lower level and another long shaft, and then... the rock wall with a hidden doorway to another realm. I always wondered how many of those hidden channels existed. So far I'd found three. One to Alfheim, the world of light elves, this one, to Svartalfheim, the home of the dark elves or mares, and hidden within it another one... the one I was planning to use today. This one was the first. I found it a long time ago, when I was a kid. I was perfecting my shape-shifting power escaping to the wilderness, I didn't want to do it in front of my brothers, fearing jokes at my failed attempts.

The first time I came here was just an accident. I found this cave and curiosity pushed me to explore it. I made my way through the tunnels and came to the dead end. I got so pissed off that after all this travel I found nothing of interest, I threw a rock at the wall... and the rock went through, sending ripples on the surface of the wall... naturally, I followed.

When I stepped into the dark world of black moss and murky waters, my father's story about the realm where nightmares come from flooded my mind. But, as I soon discovered, this place wasn't full of horrifying monsters, as I imagined it. It was gloomy, filthy, it smelled like an old, moldy cellar. The only inhabitants of this world were mares, ghostly little creatures with glowing red eyes and shadowy capes. They didn't talk, they avoided me and ran away at the first blink of even the smallest light. Without anyone bothering me I explored the area surrounding the passage and left, feeling disappointed.

My second visit to this place was a few years later, this time I marked the hidden way out and went further, hoping I find something worth of my troubles, but the scenery was the same no matter how far I walked. Same wet and foggy foul smelling swamp. The third time I came here to hide mother's necklace. I wanted to know if anyone could find it here. I thought that if Sol's rays can barely reach into this place then Heimdall's all seeing eye wouldn't be able to see it clearly either, and I was right.

On my fifth visit I went as far as I could, spending a few days in this shadowy world, and it payed off. I found something that didn't belong to this realm. My light reflected off one of the rocks, sparkling, and when I stepped closer, I felt a cold breeze. The rock was another hidden passage, this one led to Jotunheim. Back then my find scared me, stories about the war with the Ice Giants were still fresh in my mind and I even planned to tell my father about my discovery... but I wanted to explore it before it was be closed or closely guarded. I went through and found that the other end came out in the ceiling of a frozen cave. No one from Jotunheim could possibly find it, unless they knew where to look. That fact had made my day. I could travel to the enemy's world undetected by either side, so I kept it a secret, thinking that one day it could come in handy, and I was right, that day had finally came.

I pushed myself through the frost covered walls, changing my shape once again, and in the form of a white fox crossed the slippery floor of the cave, making my way to the distant opening on the north side. I wasn't planning to go to the main city, or the valley below. I had a different plan, I was looking for someone.

Someone who was very bitter about the past, someone with a thirst for power and an eye for the crown of Jotunheim. Someone who was craving revenge and was stupid enough to go against his father's peace treaty with Odin. An easily manipulated by greed puppet, who would be eager to play the role in my game. I was looking for the son of Laufey, Grundroth... and I knew exactly where I could find the diminished in power and cast off from the palace son of the Frost Giants king.

And now to make up for the previous short update, here is a long one... with James.. I mean Thor and Astrid!

(Astrid's POV)

We started our trip in the morning, and I decided to push my attraction to James deep inside, making myself think of nothing but Lana. I tried hard to work on plan how I was going to save my friend, but every time the rope in my hand jerked, tightening, my thoughts jumped back to the viking at the end of it. He was stumbling his way through rough terrain with tied up arms, following me without any complaints, and the doubt that was born when I heard his crazy story returned, tugging at my heart. My mind started to battle with the growing feeling that I was doing the wrong thing.

The heart pushed: 'You made him sleep tied up to the tree, sitting up all night! You pulled him like a dog behind you, and all this time he never fought, never tried to run, didn't say one word to offend you! It's not right, you are being too cruel!'

The mind argued: 'He was a part of that raid, he is guilty! He showed no mercy to that family, he doesn't deserved it from me!'

The heart pleaded: 'But mercy is a sign of a heart, everyone deserves a second chance.'

The mind pinned: 'No mercy for the enemy.'

The heart questioned: 'Enemy? He is not your enemy. You killed his friends, he was protecting them, just like you were protecting those farmers! You just ended up on opposite sides by chance. You know you're not the farming, wearing dresses type, you're a warrior, he's one too... a viking... '

The mind remained silent and the heart pushed forward, gripping to the weakness: 'Remember what Lana told you about vikings? Warrior's glory, raids and fighting is their life... You can't blame him for how he was raised. He doesn't know any other way, you can't blame someone for what they were born into.'

The mind stalled, sliding to a sloppy as the ground under my feet path: '...That's true... maybe you were born into the same... remember how easy it was for you to kill those men? You didn't stop, you didn't think, you just acted... you are like them, like him...”

I looked back at my prisoner and he rose up his damned sad blue eyes to mine. The heart whispered: 'This is why you feel what you feel for him... why you attracted to him... you are the same... don't fight it, you feel that it's right...'

That was too much for the mind and it snapped, shouting: 'This! This is what it's all about! You're just making excuses for him! You want to better him, so you can like him guilt free! What is wrong with you?'

I turned away and yanked the rope, trying to return to my plan to free Lana, but the path turned steeper, pulling all my attention to the surroundings. The trail turned slightly left and then came to a fork, with one wider lane going East and a narrow, almost completely hidden in the overgrowing plants track going West. I guess the easy walk is over... neither of those are going where I need... I stopped for a second and made a step forward, making my way north.

I made a few careful steps downhill, and my foot slid on the grass, making me curse and grip at a nearby tree. A tug on the rope followed a quiet swear and I looked back. James was leaning against a tree, trying to brace himself for balance. He pushed with his shoulder and slid his feet over the slope, following me. His eyes rose up to mine, and I sighed, letting go of blue eyes. I should find an easier way, it's hard to walk on this slopped part with tied arms. Where are we anyway? It looks like we're going down... to what? My ears caught the faint sound of water and my eyes fished out blue simmering between the trees. The river! We may catch that ship and all this will be over! My mind shouted with excitement, and my heart skipped and sunk. All this will be over...

Before I could catch my conflicting reaction, the crackling sound of branches followed a loud curse, making me turn, and I saw James' body propelling on the ground toward me.

“Fuck!” Was all I heard as he slid past me, unable to do anything to slow down his fast decent.

My mind raced with 'what now?' questions and the rope in my hands tightened, pulling me with it. I braced my feet on two trees as an anchor and stopping my slide as the rope dug into my hands. The heart jumped 'oh no! The rope is on his neck!' I quickly let go of it, and pushed my feet together, following my prisoner. The ground under me suddenly vanished, and my body propelled in the air, my lungs pushing out a scream.

“Son of aaaaaaahhh!!!”

The flight came to a stop, dropping my body onto pebbles and the wet fur of my cape flipped over, covering my head. My shirt slid up, pushing the belt up to my ribs, and I moaned, reaching for James' shoulder.

“Are you okay?”

“Fuck! My mouth is full of dirt!” He rolled onto his back, spitting and almost at the same time another voice shouted.

“Odin's beard! What the...?!”

I quickly turned to look where the scream came from and saw five fully armed men right beside us. Their hands quickly drew their weapons out and I jumped up, pushing the fur off my head and stepping between them and James with my sword ready. The warriors stepped back and froze in place as their widening eyes moved over my figure.

“Thor almighty, it's a woman!” One of them gasped and pushed his sword back into the scabbard, smiling.

His friends repeated that motion, but their hands stayed on the hilts. I lowered my sword and looked closer at the unexpected group in chain mail shirts.

“Out of Hel's grip, right into Fenris jaws...” The voice behind me brought their attention to James, and their expressions changed from surprised to curious.

“Hm... A viking captured by a woman?” A red bearded man smirked, but the warrior that differed from the group by a richly engraved weapon raised his hand and cut the ready to come out jokes. Must be their leader... I made a mental note and concentrated my attention on him as he spoke.

“You are coming with us, to see my Earl.”

I looked over the warriors. I can take them... there are only five of them... if I have to, I can take them... I can't move too freely, with James behind me, I have to make sure none of them can reach him... so I have to make the first move, unless...

“I have no business, nor rivalry with you as you have none with me. Let us go in peace and no blood will be shed.” I let the tip of my sword touch the ground and moved my hand from the axe that I never pulled out of my belt. The eyes of the chieftain followed my movements.

“I would like to do as you ask, but that decision is not up to me. Come with us willingly, and we can avoid unnecessary bloodshed.” The chief's eyes moved to something past me, making me turn. A dozen warriors were approaching from the other side of the shore. Swords and axes drawn and ready for action. Shit...

My grip on the handle of the sword tightened, the other hand returning to the axe. I have to move fast and then... my eyes stopped on James. He will be exposed... I can't fight them all and protect him... Shit! As if he read my thoughts, he looked at the running reinforcement and sighed, turning to me.

“Sif... I think we have no other choice but to accept this warm invitation... but on our terms. Honor is everything and above all in the eyes of Odin, who sees all.” His eye were peering into mine as if he wanted me to get his message.

Honor... our terms... Odin... right. I turned to the leader.

“We will come willingly, as guests, not prisoners. Give me your word of honor that neither of us will be harmed, or I will kill five of you before the others can reach me. Swear in front of all these people and Odin.”

The chieftain looked at my sword, then lifted his eyes to my face. I felt my heart pounding in my temples, muscles tense and ready for a hit. After a short pause that felt like an eternity he stepped forward, turning to his men.

“I'm Ulvar, and I give my word of honor, to Sif. She and her slave will be treated as guests. May Odin never send his Valkyries to take me to Valhalla, if I break my word.”

I exhaled and slowly pushed my sword into the loop of my belt. “We accept your invitation, Ulvar.”

As we followed our hosts along the shore, I had time to look around. What I thought was a river in reality was a big lake, which stretched in both directions as far as my eyes could see. The opposite side was invisible, hidden under a layer of fog in the distance, so I couldn't tell just how big the lake was. That discovery made me sigh. Walking around will take a few days or longer... my heart skipped, quickening. A few days longer! My mind snapped. A a few days longer for Lana somewhere with her captors! Heart hid, slowing down.

As we followed the warriors behind the bend of the shore I saw a long ship that was pushed into a natural narrowing of the beach. Multiple colored shields covered its sides and the bow in the form of a dragon's head towered over the beach. We were brought to the tent on board the ship, to a few men sitting by a short table.

“Earl Truvor, Sif and her slave agreed to be our guests.” Ulvar stepped closer to the one he called Earl and the rest of the warriors closed in a tight ring behind us.

Truvor was in his mid-twenties, with long dark hair that was shaved on the sides and pulled into a braid in the back. His shoulders were covered in white fur, armor enriched in golden plates.

“Guests?” His green eyes stopped on me then moved to James as Ulvar started whispering something into his ear. The eyes of the young Earl inspected me from head to toe, then returned to James, before concentrating on me.

“You don't look like a Slavic woman, nor Khazar or Maryag or Pecheneg or Avar... your sword and clothing don't carry any symbols... even your name doesn't point to your homeland... Sif... He, on the other hand...” Earl's eyes moved to James. “He's clearly a viking, the clips on his cape have Odin's Valknut... so you see, despite the word that Ulvar gave you, we have a little problem here. I hate to see one of my blood enslaved by a woman of unknown origin, who is, by the looks of it, a warrior and could be my enemy.”

“She's a viking.” I heard James' voice before I could come up with an answer. Truvor's eyebrow moved up, his eyes drifting to James and after a few seconds returning to me.

“Interesting... a slave speaks before his mistress...”

“He's not a slave, he's a free man... will be... after...” I swallowed, not sure if I should continue.

“After...?” Green eyes insisted, not leaving me a choice. I rose my chin.

“After I trade with his father. The life of this man for the life of my friend.”

“He was captured by a woman, no offense, but... not every father would accept his diminished and ashamed by this fact son. What then?” He threw a shameful look at James and returned his eyes to me.

“I will let him go and free my friend by force.”

The Earl's eyes smirked.

“You must think very highly of your skills. I heard you threatened my warriors, too.” His lips slid into a crooked smirk and the air around us filled with snorts and giggles.

“I saw her go alone against nine Berserks, and none of them are laughing anymore.” I heard James' growling voice, and lowered my eyes. Not true...

“You killed nine Berserks?” A young viking, almost a boy, gasped and I lifted my eyes to the Earl.

“No, I killed five, one was wounded, one was... knocked out... together with me by the falling roof... the others fled, probably thinking I was dead.”

“Hm... Berserks are fearless... even though they are our enemy, since they loot, plunder and kill everyone they meet, with no regards for blood. They deserve a great respect as honored warriors. So does your genuine humbleness. You are not willing to praise yourself, even when your... prisoner does.” The Earl's eyes stared in to mine and I held his gaze until his eyes moved to James.

“Knocked out Berserk... would that be him?” Truvor's eyes narrowed, and I heard the metal noise of the blades around us being half pulled out of scabbards. Oh shit... I have to come up with a story, something about how he was captured before that... or after... no he said he saw me fight, so it has to be before... My mind screeched, heart speeding up, and I was about to answer when a voice from outside of the ring of warriors cackled.

“He's not a Berserk, brother.” The warriors stepped aside, letting through a tall, smiling man with long, straight blond hair. He walked up to us and continued as his blue eyes searched over James' figure.

“No bear claw necklace... no hideous horned helmet, no skulls... Besides, you would be able to smell a Berserk a mile away. They fight like animals with no fear or mercy, they smell like them too.”

His words brought a few laughs and he lifted his hand as if to touch James' shoulder, blue eyes deepened into blues, and at that moment a raven landed on the starboard, making everyone turn their heads with its loud 'caw'. The newcomer's eyes widened, looking at the bird, then came back to James' and his hand, that was still midair on the way to my prisoner's shoulder, suddenly withdrew. He turned to me and another raven's 'caw' flew in the air. The newcomer stepped back, almost making me shiver under his penetrating gaze.

“I guess you're right as always, Helgi. So what should we do, what do you see?” Truvor broke the silence and stood up greeting the blond. Blue eyes moved away and I relaxed.

“I see honored guests... who's presence brings the protection of Odin with them. And if we treat them well, the Gods may bless our journey with success and victory. So no more questions, unless they feel like sharing.”

“We can't even find out what land raised this woman warrior? Are you sure?” The Earl eyes turned to us, then back to his brother.

“I've never been so sure in my life, brother.” Helgi looked at Truvor and lightly moved his head as if in a hidden sign. Another loud 'caw' broke the air and the Earl nodded and moved his arm in invitation to the table.

“So be it.”

The raven flew up, making a circle over the ship, before melting into the sky and I sighed. Great... now we have to stay and...

“We were just about to eat, you came just in time.” Helgi winked at us.

The warriors moved, letting in a few women with huge trays.

“Oh thank Odin, the real food!” I heard James' excited voice.

I felt a pin of guilt when Helgi's eyes turned to me and mumbled. “I had nothing but bread and water, there was no time to hunt...”

“Not a good food for a man and since you are both our guests, I hope you let your prisoner be free on this ship, it's not like he's going to try and run with all those warriors around.” He smiled.

“Oh trust me I wouldn't run even if I could.” James blue eyes smiled and I noticed Helgi's curious glance that bounced form me to my prisoner.

James raised his eyebrow, awaiting for my word and I sighed. “Fine... I guess you can untie him for now.”

Okay, so here is a day off and as promised a little update!
Hope you missed Lana.

XIX.

(Lana's POV)

The rest of the night I spent slowly making my way through the darkness, body fighting the need to rest, pushing its way through the forest, and mind fighting conflicting thoughts, both feeling lost, drained, and forsaken. I could barely see where I was going, and when I stumbled over something for the umpteenth time and fell, I finally gave up, drifting into a sleep filled with thoughts turning to nightmares.

With the rise of the sun I was back on my feet, and despite my hunger, I couldn't let myself slow down for a hunt, I wanted to catch up with Sig. She and her companion had all the answers, and I needed to know. My mind was arguing with itself, pointing to the facts and then drawing back to the story I heard from Dobrynia. Nymphs have powers, I don't, do I...? I concentrated and tried to make a little bush in front of me grow, nothing happened. I tried to heal a broken branch of a nearby tree, tried to talk to it, but it was no use.

The other part of my mind still pushed, despite the results, reassuring me that Perun himself couldn't be wrong. Maybe I just don't know how to use my powers... My hand stopped on my ribbon. There is magic with me, not mine, it was given to me, but I can make it happen. Come on, glow! Please, do something! Make me believe that I'm not just a crazy lost girl, show me your power, tell me how to wake it up! My fingers threaded through the silky fabric, waiting, hoping, but blue silk didn't change, indifferent to my plea. I let go of my braid and continued my walk disappointed with result. Closer to evening I started to doubt the whole 'nymph' thing, but my mind refused to let go of what I'd overheard by the well.

Let's start from the beginning. There is a very high possibility that Sig is really a Valkyrie, everything points to that. The huge dead field where I found her, her armor, her sword... I remembered the glowing symbol I saw on her sword. What was it? I closed my eyes, retrieving the image from my memory and another vision pushed through the glowing mark. Radda's pendant! She said it was a symbol of Odin. Okay, so Sig is a Valkyrie, that's for sure. Then... that means that viking was really Perun himself... and he said I was a Nymph... and that is impossible. I'm not... or am I missing something...

I sighed, rewinding every word of Dobrynia's story and stopped dead in my tracks, feeling a cold flash. Wait... he said he doesn't have powers... why? Could it be that my powers aren't working for the same reason? No... the ribbon worked just fine, there is no connection there. I mean really... why would a Nymph be connected to Perun? He's a supreme God, Nymphs, although divine spirits, are just demigods... like Valkyries... But he is here for Sig... a Valkyrie... I felt my head spin and griped at my temples. I am back to where I started!

All I know is that I have no powers, that's a fact. I have no memory of any other life but this. That's a... well... I do.. my dream... it did feel real.. too real... Okay, so I have one memory and I have a magic ribbon. But the ribbon is not my power... Radda gave it to me... she did say it was mine form the day I was born... how did she know? And if she did, then does she know what happened to my parents... to me...? Maybe she was waiting until I'm older...

'I wish we never moved from that village.' I sighed. No... we had to...

'I wish I'd stayed with Radda...' But... then I would've never met Sig...

'I wish I was never kidnapped, I wish we never went to that farm...' But then Sig would've never met Perun... I sighed again. It's like everything is connected, intertwined, every little thing, every move, every decision!

If I would've slept till sunrise that night, I would've never got lost in the fog and wouldn't have wandered into that burned valley.

Me and Sig could've stay longer in our cave and we would've never come to that farm at the time it was under attack...

It's all like a fine net of decisions and choices, some random, some made by us, some just pushed us to the right direction... and right now that direction is north. I climbed over the fallen trunk of a tree, pulling my dress up and the memory of Sig refusing the wear a dress floated in my mind, making me smile. She knew that part right, Radda told me that Valkyries wear man’s clothing at least when they ride on their winged steeds to bring warriors to Valhalla. A little pin dug in and turned into a unpleasant thought.

What if she remembered who she is, and went back to the God's world with Perun? No... she would rescue me... But what if she knew that I escaped and in no danger...? She would've found me to at least say goodbye. She's caring, she wouldn't just leave.... But what if she did? I mean.. she only knew me for a week... No.. no.. don't think like that. She is going north and soon you will catch up with her. I pull myself up to stand, feeling a tug, that followed by the sound of fabric ripping. My eyes flew to the middle of the skirt, staring at the half torn hem that shamelessly opened my leather-clad knees. Shit... see what happens when you are distracted and not paying attention?

After a minute of deliberation with my morality, I rip the torn part off and breathed in, making a step forward. My eyes slid to my uncovered legs as modesty pushed a hot flush to my cheeks:

'Shame on you! How will you show yourself to people like this?'

Bravery smiled, pulling my chin up: 'If Sig can do it, you can do it!' And quickly added, to calm down the blushing conscience: 'There's no one in these woods anyway, and if you see someone, you can hide.'

'I can do that.' I nodded to myself and tied the long strip of fabric to my belt. Who knows, I may need it later on.

The few more hours of walking went much faster than before with unrestrained movements, and I started to wonder why I never let Sig cut it off in the first place. The difference was amazing. No more pulling the dress up, stepping over the branches, no pushing the folds back under the belt when they fall down, nothing on the way of my legs! Somewhere deep inside, my modesty was still pocking me with pins of moral rules:

'You lost your shame! Showing off your legs like that!'

Mind pushed with the logic: 'If you are a Nymph, then human customs don't apply to you, if you are not, then you are just pushing yourself even further into being outcast, being different.'

I stopped and raised my chin, silencing all the voices at once.

“I am an outcast, always was and always will be, no length of skirt would make it not so.”

My mind pulled back, modesty crumbled, slowly diminishing back deep inside of my conscience, and I leapt over a stump, smiling to the new feeling of rebellious freedom.

Was that ribbon blue from the start, or did I notice it just now?! The ribbon is blueeeeeeee!!!!!! *jumps around* that kind of reminds me of someone's eyes, divine blue eyes... *sigh*

Where was I? Thank Gods for Lana and her musings, she connected all the dots nicely and every detail fell into place. Plus, Thor just got himself an ally and Gods know he needs one right now!

And the skirt is ripping, revealing her body, as she reveals her true self, coming to terms what she is, what she is supposed to do, heading north carrying this precious information for our amnesia stricken Astrid.

Oh and yes, she will hide if someone shows up? That must mean that someone will eventually show up... Perhaps his eyes will be blue?

Nothing but     for this amazing story now and always! Please update soon!
